No comment on UK situation
Microsoft has reportedly started to replenish stock of Xbox 360s in American retail channels.
Xbox 360 has been in agonisingly short supply since the console's November 22nd launch, but GameSpot reports that some of the remaining pre-orders are now being filled.
Microsoft UK declined to comment as to whether it's a situation reflected on this side of the Atlantic. "Xbox does not announce details of shipments, but I can tell you that we're on track to meet our 90 day forecast of 2.75 to 3.0 million units," a spokesperson told GamesIndustry.biz this lunchtime.
The US line is that Microsoft is "working around the clock to deliver as many Xbox 360 consoles as humanly possible".
Meanwhile, San Jose Mercury News reporter Dean Takahashi, author of Opening The Xbox and currently at work on a similar tome dealing with the creation of 360, expressed his opinion that Microsoft is "disappointed" about the lack of supply - based on his discussions with senior figures including system designer Greg Gibson and division spokesperson Molly O'Donnell.
It's an opinion widely held - even by Microsoft's competitors.
Asked whether he thought there was any truth to rumours that the shortages are deliberate, Sony's Phil Harrison told GamesIndustry.biz, "I don't believe that for a second. I think that it's clear that they're making every unit that they can - whether that is enough for demand or they can't make enough is a question you'll have to put to Microsoft. It's definitely not done on purpose, I can assure you of that."

New 360 game at Lik Sang:
Yuke's first game for the Microsoft Xbox 360, is a wrestling game under licence of Japanese federation. Wrestle Kingdom favors a "work the body" style of gameplay, where you can focus on various body parts to wear out your opponent and make him more vulnerable. There's also a "voltage" meter that builds as you perform more impressive moves. Once your meter is filled, you can hit the A and X buttons together to perform your wrestler's finishing move.

Microsoft is currently working on a new feature for Xbox 360 that will enable owners to send text messages to mobile phones and computers.
The service will be provided by MSN Messenger, the instant-messaging software. By using Xbox Live to sign into an MSN account, users can send messages to any friends online, including those using mobile phones to connect to the Messenger service.
Using the IM software will be free of charge, and you can expect to be downloading it to your Internet-ready 360 in the near future.

News from Spong:
As far as SPOnG is concerned, there are two types of hacking. A nice kind and a not so nice kind. Tinkering around with a console in order to sate your geek dreams is one thing. Getting a Commodore 64 emulator running on your Xbox and making the screen spool "I AM COOL" is a pursuit that, as long as you don't want a girlfriend, no one can really take exception to.
Though of course, there is bad hacking. Ripping games, dumping them on the Internet and rewiring hardware in order to make it play the illegally copied goods. There is something of a debate over piracy at the SPOnG office. It's wrong, illegal and you shouldn't do it. On this we are agreed. However, the claims that are made regarding the lost revenues due to copied games each year somewhat undermine this message. If Mr A has ten copied games, software publishers will have you believe that his second hand piracy has cost them ten full-price game sales. This of course rubbish. It might have cost them one sale perhaps, working on the assumption that Mr A was paying four pounds per game, some people won't buy games if they can't get them cheaply or for free. Understand? That's why the second hand and trade in businesses are booming at the moment.
Anyway, politics aside for a moment, some less than pleasant news has been filtering through to us over the past few weeks, as various message boards claim to have ripped and dumped Xbox 360 game code directly from retail discs. One group – seemingly the driving force behind undoing Xbox 360 copy protection – know as Team PI Coder, has to date released almost the entire 360 catalog and made available an extractor tool with which other users are encouraged to do likewise.
Right now, the rips are useless. When mastered to a DVD-R, the Xbox finds them unreadable. For now. You see, at this very moment, while you are reading this news piece, workshops the length and breadth of China, and other places, are working tirelessly towards a single goal – and that goal is to release a mod-chip for Microsoft's machine that will force the console to accept ripped game software.
From what we have been able to gather, the first mod-chips for the 360 will be available within a month. Speaking to us under terms of anonymity, one source close to the research and development of some well known current-generation chips said, “We've been seeing partial success from some corners [in China] though nothing that could go on sale yet.” This paints a dark picture of the console industry and the aggressive blight it suffers. “Everyone is working on a full-functioning 'do everything' chip that will take apart the 360 and let users do what they will, though we expect a first-generation bypass device that will allow back-ups within weeks. The first on the market is likely to be complex and might not be particularly good, though that's just a stopgap before real chips become available.”
There is some hope for Microsoft however, “Everyone is finding it difficult [to make the chips work correctly] as Microsoft's security is the best we've seen to date for a disc-system. It it weren't for the fact that DVD is used, it's likely that further development wouldn't have been worth anyone's time.”
Reacting to the escalation of IP aggression against its machine, Microsoft released a statement over the weekend reading, “We have made improvements on both the hardware and software side to protect Xbox 360 against piracy and modding. With Xbox 360, we had the benefit of learning from our experiences on Xbox. This allowed us to identify points of weakness that were exploited by hackers in the first generation and to eliminate those vulnerabilities in Xbox 360.”
So will the Xbox 360 escape its pursuers? Right now, it seems unlikely, and as huge resources are poured into cracking the new box, it seems a matter of when rather than if. The 360 does have its online functionality to further protect the retail unit as was released and Microsoft representatives have stated to SPOnG on several occasions that it believes it can second guess the areas it might see targeted and is proactively preparing updates.
We'll keep you updated.

December 20th, 2005, 21:42 Posted By: wraggster
At Microsoft's Tokyo Xbox summit this summer, Namco announced a new soccer game for the Xbox 360 named Love Football. Fans ready for the pitch had only a short trailer to go on, but the company has finally released its first details.
Love Football is currently scheduled for release in Japan in spring 2006. The game will include approximately 60 teams from around the world, complete with rosters featuring real athletes.
Love Football has one major difference from conventional soccer games, a feature that Namco considers as its biggest selling point. Most sports games are played from a third-person perspective, but Namco wants to give gamers the true feeling of playing soccer from an athlete's point of view. To do this, the developers of Love Football have adopted a first-person camera angle, where the gamer sees the action from the view of a single soccer player on the field.
Love Football producer Nobuhisa Mikoda explains that the new perspective gives the gamer all the experiences of competing as an on-field participant, including fighting for the ball against other players, the pressure of getting marked by multiple opponents, and getting into defensive position when someone else has the ball. Of course, the game also allows the gamer to switch to other characters on the field.
Although the feature will probably be unique to the Japanese version's release, one of Love Football's core gaming modes will be a "Japanese representative story mode." Gamers will be able pick their favorite Japanese national team member and get to experience the joy and pressure of competing on the field as an athlete in the spotlight.

December 20th, 2005, 21:41 Posted By: wraggster
In a press conference in Tokyo, Japanese game publisher AQ Interactive announced three new games for next-generation consoles, including a new Xbox 360 project by Mistwalker's Hironobu Sakaguchi.
A holding company established in October, AQ Interactive manages and publishes games for three subsidiaries: Cavia (Drakengard, Beat Down), Artoon (Blue Dragon, Yoshi Topsy-Turvy), and Feel Plus (codeveloper on Lost Odyssey). Up until now, the three developers only made games for outside companies such as Square Enix and Microsoft, but with nearly 350 developers working under the AQ Interactive banner, they are now going to publish their own titles as well.
AQ Interactive has already released Tetris: The Grandmaster Ace as one of the Japanese launch titles for the Xbox 360, and a second title, Tsuushin Taisen Mahjong: Touryuumon, is underway for a January release. The company looks to expand into the game market with more titles for the Xbox 360 as well as the PlayStation 3.
With Artoon and Feel Plus already handling Sakaguchi projects of their own, it came as little surprise that AQ Interactive's press conference included the announcement of a Cavia-developed Xbox 360 project from Sakaguchi (who is a shareholder in AQ Interactive).
Sakaguchi appeared at the conference to unveil the action role-playing game Cry On. This will be the first time that Sakaguchi has made an action RPG, and he's been given a budget of 1 billion yen (about $8.5 million) to get the project done.
Cry On takes place in a fantasy world where humanity coexists with subterranean giants freed from their rocky hibernation and used as instruments of war. Throughout the quest, the player controls a girl named Sally and her giant traveling companion, Boggle.
As for the game's title, Sakaguchi chose it for its dual connotations. He noted that tears come from overwhelming joy as well as profound sorrow, and he hopes to create a storyline that delivers such varied emotional experiences.
Cry On's characters will be designed by Kimihiko Fujisaka of the Drakengard series. Its music will be composed by Nobuo Uematsu, who's also working on Sakaguchi's Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey.
The other two AQ Interactive titles unveiled at the conference were Bullet Witch and Vamire's Rain.
Bullet Witch is the second Xbox 360 project under development by Cavia. The action adventure takes place in the exceedingly bleak near future of 2013. Civilization is on the brink of extinction after demons begin appearing on the earth, and the player wades into the fray as a witch named Alicia. Equipped with a broom-shaped gun and powerful magic, players will try to take down the demons and save mankind.
Director Take Yoichi said that Alicia's magic puts a number of catastrophic events in her control, from conspiracies of ravens to tank-tossing typhoons, and even meteor showers that turn entire levels into a sea of fire. The enemies are likewise large in scale, such as a dragon that's big enough to swallow a plane.
Bullet Witch will be heavy on action, but producer Tetsu Takahashi commented that it will also feature a deep storyline that involves Alicia's past. A brief trailer presented at the conference showed Alicia fighting against demons in a city full of skyscrapers. Bullet Witch is planned for a spring 2006 release in Japan.
Cavia isn't the only AQ Interactive label working on two next-generation titles. In addition to Blue Dragon, developer Artoon is also working on an action adventure game named Vampire's Rain, currently in development for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
Vampire's Rain puts players in the shoes of Special Forces member John Lloyd. Lloyd has been assigned by the government to track down vampires on the sly, and then wipe them out. The game takes place in low visibility due to strong rain, which will keep players from being able to easily identify vampires from ordinary people until they get uncomfortably close.
Aside from the single-player story, various modes will be offered for online play (including a cooperative mode), and players can also choose to fight as or against the bloodsuckers. Vampire's Rain is being produced by Artoon president Naoto Oshima, and is slated for release in Japan during winter 2006.

Dead or Alive 4 for the Xbox 360 is coming out later than expected...again. Online retailers are listing the game as releasing on December 28, 2005, almost a week after it was last projected to hit stores.
All is not lost for fans of the franchise's battling buxom beauties. Tecmo's Web site still shows the game as having a "Holiday 2005" release date, giving the company 12 more days to make good on its word.
DOA4 was originally scheduled to be both a North American and Japanese Xbox 360 launch title, but has since been in a holding pattern for nearly a month. Tecmo previously cited online issues as reason for the delay in Japan.
Perhaps to appease its rabid fan base, the company is offering those who preorder the game from its Web site a free Dead or Alive 4 2006 calendar, which will hopefully still be useful by the time the game does come out.

December 20th, 2005, 19:19 Posted By: wraggster
Only weeks after the launch of the Xbox 360 console, a Dutch hacker group has worked out how to "dump" the contents of game discs for the system, allowing them to be copied and examined - but as yet, there is no way to run copied games.
A group describing itself as Team PI Coder has posted details of the file system for the game discs, along with a program to extract files from them and example source code, to several sites on the Internet.
While the move is being widely reported as a major step towards cracking the Xbox 360's security and creating mod chips or "soft mod" systems, which require no physical chip and became popular on both the original Xbox and the PlayStation Portable, Microsoft is unlikely to be greatly worried by this development.
At present, there is no way to run copied games or any form of unauthorised code on the Xbox 360, and the cracking of the disc format is a relatively simple move - since the Xbox 360 merely uses a modified version of the discs used by the original Xbox, whose format is widely understood.
In fact, although several teams around the world are known to be working on breaking the security of the Xbox 360, so far little progress has been made in this regard. The original Xbox was one of the most widely hacked consoles ever, thanks to its PC-style architecture and weak security - both things that have changed on the Xbox 360.
Microsoft claims to have learned its lessons from the Xbox and has implemented far more stringent security measures in the Xbox 360 - some of which would have been impossible on the original console, due to its use of off-the-shelf components.
However, even if the Xbox 360 presents a major challenge to hackers, history suggests that it's unlikely that it will remain secure forever. Most popular consoles have been cracked and used to run homebrew and pirate content within a few months of release - with the most recent to see this treatment being Sony's PlayStation Portable, for which a wide range of unauthorised applications and games are now available, as well as pirate versions of official games.

* Edge: Now that the machine is in production and on your desk, how well does it fulfil your original vision?
* Allard: I think it's pretty much spot on. I spoke with someone who was very involved in the planning about three years ago - he came over for about five minutes to drop something off and ended up spending three hours looking at all the capabilities of the machine, and he said, "Son of a gun, if you guys didn't do 95 per cent of the original vision of the machine!" And I looked at him and said, "Well, what was the other five per cent, what did we drop?" and he said, "I don't know. I couldn't find it!"

Hideo Kojima says the only reason that Metal Gear Solid 4 is debuting on PlayStation 3 is that he likes to be first with everything, and that the last year's focus on MGS3 meant Kojima Productions didn't have any time to get to grips with Xbox 360. Actually, he says, it could quite happily work on Microsoft's system.
When asked whether MGS4 could work on 360 during a recent 1up interview, he said: "Yes, that's technically possible." It's not that he doesn't like Xbox 360, see, he just doesn't want to do things second. So he's a bit like those kids who "hate" bands because their mates found out about them first.
"Kojima Productions has this philosophy that we want to be the first in everything regarding new technology. So after we finished MGS3, the option was to work on the PS3 to try all the new things for Metal Gear Solid 4. The only reason for this is I'm the kind of person who wants to be the first person on the moon, and don't want to be asking 'what the moon was like?' from other people." (Shh, don't tell him.)
So yes. Metal Gear Solid 4 could work on Xbox 360 ("maybe some nuance or a small detail here and there might be different") and the reason for that, apparently is that "there are really no differences" between the PS3, 360 and PC, although obviously Revolution is "totally different".

Darcelf/Alg5 has released a new emulator for Xbox.
Xzx81 is an xbox port of Xz81, a zx81 emulator.
"The Sinclair ZX81 home computer, released by Sinclair Research in 1981, was the followup to the company's ZX80. The case was black, with a membrane keyboard; the machine's distinctive appearance was the work of industrial designer Rick Dickinson. Video output, as in the ZX80, was to a television set, and saving and loading programs was via an ordinary home audio tape recorder to magnetic audio tapes."
heres the info:
The screen, keyboard, tape reader and sound(!) are emulated.
The keyboard is emulated using a virtual keyboard.
The sound emulate a sound addon called Bi-Pak Zon X-81 that was using an AY chipset (much like the Atari ST, Amstrad CPC...)
To Do:
* Joystick emulation ?
* Add a menu to select some options (reset, type of sound addon ...)

Namco’s Ridge Racer 6 is the lowest selling Xbox 360 game in America selling only 9,091 units. By comparison the highest selling title, Call of Duty 2, has sold 250,730. Things couldn’t be more different in Japan. While Microsoft’s white box is about as elusive as a certain white whale in the US, they are readily available in Japan. Ridge Racer 6 is also the highest selling game title in Japan selling 29,891 units. Call of Duty 2 isn’t even in the top 3.
This only reiterates how difficult it will be for Microsoft to succeed in the Japanese market. While they have made great inroads in America, establishing themselves as a serious threat to Sony’s console hegemony, they have been unable to duplicate a fraction of that success in Japan.

Codemasters has revealed LMA Manager 2006 will be released for PC and Xbox 360 around March next year, complete with an updated database and transfer market and an enhanced match engine.
Thanks to techno-magic (or 'multi-threading' as electro boffins call it) the two new versions will be faster and prettier than the PS2 and Xbox editions already on shop shelves.
Further tweaks include HD and 720p support and a wide-screen mode for the 3D match engine.
Codemasters even boasts that "effectively three console-screens worth of information will be visible". So you'd better start widening those current-gen peepers in preparation.
LMA Manager 2006 will be released for Xbox 360 and PC in spring 2006, and is already out for PS2 and Xbox
