The top-performing Xbox Live Arcade games have been revealed in a talk at GameFest by platform manager Mark Coates, following on from a lecture by Chris Satchell, who spoke about some of the latest Xbox Live numbers.
According to a report on Gamasutra, Microsoft is predicting 45 million downloads and over 100 games on XBLA by the end of 2007, with a 156 per cent return on those published so far.
What's more interesting are the statistics on which titles have been performing the best so far this year, with TMNT 1989 Arcade gathering the most users, followed by Worms and UNO.
Jewel Quest wins out on average session length, while UNO has been played for the most minutes overall.
Across the financial year running from June 2006 to July 2007 Streetfighter II HF is top of both the volume and revenue lists, with UNO and TMNT following up on volume, and Worms and Doom runners-up for revenue.
One particularly interesting statistic revealed was that the first two months after a game's release only accounted for 35 per cent of its revenue on average, something very different to most full release titles.
Finally, the average user apparently has 23 people on their friends list, although there's no information on whether or not all of those would be considered active.

Well it appears that despite all of our wishing, hoping, and positive-thinking exercises, Microsoft has failed to deliver on a small dream of ours, namely, 65nm chips for the new HDMI-rocking Xbox 360 Premiums. Despite signs pointing otherwise, new photos show that this batch of systems continue to carry the Zephyr motherboard layout, which uses the older, hotter 90nm chips, though the boys in Redmond have addressed the heat issue a little bit with the addition of a second "daughter" heatsink attached to the CPU by heatpipe. The new 65nm "Falcon" boards -- which chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) confirmed are in production -- are still on their way according to the rumor mill, slated for release sometime this Fall. Interestingly, Microsoft and TSMC have just laid plans to produce the Xbox's graphics-memory subsystem using the chip manufacturer's 90nm embedded DRAM spec. We won't speculate on when we'll start seeing that addition appear, however.

They may have had to wait a bit longer, but Australian gamers can now save a considerable chunk of change on a new Xbox 360 just like the rest of us, with the Core model now even able to boast the same price tag as the Wii. That puts it at A$399.95 (down from A$429), while the 20GB Xbox 360 Pro drops all the way from A$649 to A$579.95 (or $486US at the current exchange rate). According to Gamespot, Xbox regional director for Australia and New Zealand David McLean also confirmed that the HDMI-equipped Xboxes would be making their way down under as well, as would the Elite and Halo 3 Special Edition varieties of Xboxen, although he's apparently not quite ready to get specific about prices or release dates for those just yet.

EA debuted its "Command & Conquer TV: Battlecast" today, and they helped to make up for its unsettling hosts and production values with a fairly important announcement for Tiberium fiends: The first expansion to Command & Conquer 3 will be called Kane's Wrath, and will appear in early 2008.
The campaign will follow Kane's rise back to power after the second Tiberium War, played partially through a "Global Domination" meta-game, described as "Risk on steroids." New units, upgrades and powers for each of the factions are also included. The expansion will launch simultaneously on Xbox 360 and PC, but console owners will also be receiving a new radial interface in the expansion (as seen above).

Microsoft confirmed at Gamefest 2007 that developers working on server-based MMOs for Xbox 360 are allowed to request use of the hard drive. This is one of those "duh," but not explicitly ever stated things. Microsoft will bend the rules for these HDD required games on a "case-by-case" basis, but now with more ground rules compared to the Final Fantasy XI days.
The way it will work is developers will have to say how much space they expect their game to take and it will have to be explicitly stated on the box. Even if they don't think they're going to require all the space in the beginning, they're supposed to give the expected upper limit they'll need. As Ian Lewis, software design engineer at Microsoft said, "Feel free to require 30GB for your game; that's just going to make your potential audience a lot smaller."
Microsoft says designers can get around the console space issues by offering up lower resolution models and textures, make areas off-limits and stream assets from their server. Silver Xbox Live users will not be required to purchase a gold membership, however everyone will have to pay for the MMO's subscription fee separately from the Live membership. An MMO with a separate subscription fee still sounds like a tough sell on a console, but for the right game, anything is possible.

The target for the new game is USD 155 million, which would smash the box office record of USD 151 million held by Spider-Man 3.
Comments were made by Microsoft marketing boss Chris Di Cesare, who was convinced the film-like approach to marketing would help make the new game an order of magnitude more successful than Halo 2.
"When we opened to USD 125 million [last time], that really caught a lot of people's attention. It showed that videogames were no longer that thing that kids play in their basement," Chris Di Cesare told Variety. "We're confident we can do better."
And although he realises the comparison isn't entirely fair - as games cost considerably more than a ticket to the cinema - the numbers involved are simply too big to be ignored.
"I recognize it's not apples to apples. But it's big business any way you cut it," continued Di Cesare.
Halo 3 recently broke over one million pre-orders in the US, prompting many observers to say they would be unsurprised if one-day sales climbed as high as USD 170 million.
The marketing push to launch has called on help from some of America's biggest brands, with Pontiac, Burger King, Mountain Dew, 7-Eleven and Comcast all offering various forms of cross-branding.
Halo 3 is due for release in Europe on 26th September, a day later than in the US.

At Gamefest 2007, the annual Microsoft Game Technology Conference, MS today announced winners of its Dream-Build-Play game development contest.
Tied for first place were David Flook of Ontario, Canada, and James Silva of New York with their respective games: “Blazing Birds,” an action-packed, robotic sports game modeled after the game of badminton, and “The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai,” a highly stylized game of mayhem and revenge. For their accomplishments, Flook and Silva were offered publishing contracts with Xbox LIVE Arcade, $10,000 each and several other prizes.
"The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai"
"Blazing Birds"
Steve Olofsson of Sweden and Daniel McGuire of the United Kingdom received honors as runners-up for their games: “Gravitron Ultra” and “Yo Ho Kablammo!” respectively. Because of the amazing creativity demonstrated by these top four winners, the Xbox LIVE Arcade team also extended invitations to publish on Xbox LIVE Arcade to Olofsson and McGuire, along with $5,000 and other prizes.
A total of 16 others were recognized with third-place honors. More than 4,500 members of the gaming community from more than 100 countries enrolled in the Dream-Build-Play challenge. Final results have been posted on the Dream-Build-Play Web site

Starbreeze's Xbox 360 and PS3 Riddick 'remake' Assault on Dark Athena has slipped and will miss its planned 2007 release. Publisher, Sierra, told us that the title has now been moved to 2008.
A Sierra spokesperson was unable to give a reason for the delay, however we reckon it may have something to do with the minor ruckus that erupted over Dark Athena's content - i.e. the fact that a good portion of the content consists of the original title Escape from Butcher Bay - when the game was first announced in May.
It could well be that Sierra and Starbreeze have taken the moans to heart and are now planning additional new content beyond the Dark Athena expansion with its new story and new gameplay features, and multiplayer. But we'll have to wait and see.

Despite the ugly legal battle between Silicon Knights and Unreal Engine 3 studio Epic Games, Too Human publisher Microsoft says there's no change to its current release plans.
In an e-mail statement to CVG sister site (but just as manly) Next-Gen.biz, MS said, "regarding development of Too Human, we are still on track for a 2008 release date, as we announced most recently at E3 2007."
Then again, it's rather easy to say a game is "on track" when it doesn't have a confirmed release date, isn't it? The "2008" release window gives Epic and SK about a year and half to sort out their licensing row.
The ruckus kicked off last month when Silicon Knights served Epic with a lawsuit, claiming it was "mislead" over how complete Unreal Engine 3 code actually was. According to Silicon Knights it was forced to re-write parts of Too Human's game engine, pushing the release back significantly.
Epic has since filled a countersuit, accusing the Too Human dev of among other things, breach of contract.
We're hoping Too Human's in better shape the next time we see it, because after all this ruckus it'd be a terrible shame if it turned out to be pants. As always, we recommend keeping the popcorn at arm's reach.

Microsoft has remained quiet on rumours that another Halo 3 beta test is currently getting under way.
Word spread after keen-eyed Live gamers spotted others playing something called Halo 3 Epsilon, supposedly later confirmed as a new build of the title by an unhelpfully anonymous email.
According to the mysterious note, Epsilon will let you battle across six multiplayer maps, play custom games, enjoy a single co-operative campaign level, use the Forge feature and get to tinker with the full Saved Film functionality.
Unfortunately it looks as though this will be a closed affair for a select few, but with the game a little over a month away, we can quite happily wait.
Halo 3 recently became the fastest-selling pre-ordered game ever, soaring past the huge one million mark last Thursday.

There's a couple of developments in Xbox land today, one official and one decidedly less so. On the latter front are some rumored new Xbox 360 bundles that French website Gamick.fr claims to have caught sight of on a Microsoft marketing site. As you can see above, the bundle (in this case for the Elite model) supposedly includes Forza 2 and Marvel Ulitmate Alliance for "free." A Premium bundle with the same games was also spotted, but there's no indication of one for the Core model. According to Gamick, the only other information about the bundles is that they were labeled as "Holiday Value Bundles." In more official Xbox news, attendees at Microsoft's Gamefest 2007 got a chance to check out Torpex Games' "Schizoid," which is the first Xbox Live Arcade game to be created with XNA Game Studio (it'll be available later this year). What's more, Microsoft also announced that the top four winners of its XNA-centered Dream-Build-Play contest will be able to have their games published on Xbox Live, although there doesn't appear to be any word on exactly when they'll be available.
