Apparently impressed by the stunning success (and $157 winning bid) of his earlier Wii64, the modder who goes by the name n8bog is back with another brute-force console hybrid, this time shoving an entire Xbox 360 into a disused PS3 case. We wouldn't say it's a perfect fit, as there's been a rather large hole cut into the front to allow access to the tray, and that HDD just laying on top of the DVD-ROM looks a bit precarious, but if you have a hankerin' for something Microsoft but prefer the look of something Sony (or just really like gratuitous neon) all this can be yours at a starting bid of just $100. Any takers?

3D artist Richard Smith – one of 140 employees of Time Splitters (and ... Haze) developer, Free Radical, laid off as the company went belly-up-for-sale – posted images from some of his modeling work on Star Wars Battlefront III on his personal blog. Or, shall we say, what could have been Star Wars Battlefront III.
The renders have since been pulled; lucky thing the internet is faster than the Millennium Falcon making the Kessel Run. As you can see, Smith was working on concepts for Han Solo (above) and a bounty hunter named Shara, who you can see in the gallery below. Two of the images carry a game logo and are dated 2007, indicating that Battlefront III had been in development for some time prior to Free Radical's demise.
Development on the game is now rumored to continue at UK-based Rebellion, which just so happens to have created Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron for PSP.

Major Nelson has made a not-so-subtle "psst!" post on his blog announcing – to a Western audience – that a demo version of From Software's Ninja Gaiden clone homage, Ninja Blade, has hit the Japanese Xbox Live Marketplace. In other words, if you have a Japanese Xbox Live account set up, make with the downloading.
Comments on the Major's post indicate that the demo is both region-free and in English ... much like the Resident Evil 5 demo that recently went up on the Japanese XBLM, only to be region-locked after Capcom realized that – shockingly – people outside of Japan really wanted to try the game.

Many companies have adjourned their regularly scheduled workdays until after the new year so they can face down 2009 with well-rested resolve. Thankfully, Bungie is not one of these companies -- they recently stuffed the proverbial stockings of numerous Halo fans with a gaggle of new concept art for their upcoming sans-Spartan shooter, Halo 3: ODST. Check out all 22 images in the gallery below -- you can get your first look at the silenced SMG, as well as some of the armor your fellow shock troops will be sporting, and as a special bonus, a truly breathtaking watercolor depiction of post-mortem teabagging.

So yeah, finding an Xbox 360 Jasper in Arcade form isn't all that difficult these days, but we certainly haven't seen a glut of Pro models shipping out with the supposedly cooler, smoother and altogether more melancholy Jasper hardware within. A lucky soul over at PDAToday has acquired one such unit, and while he may just be incredibly fortunate, we'd say it's about time you to-be Pro owners start looking out for a few telltale signs. As you can see in the closeups in the read link, there here FDOU team Pro -- which was ordered from Amazon on December 22nd -- boasts a 12.1 amp rating and the unmistakable Jasper power port. Of note, it did come bundled with a Falcon revision (175-watt) power supply just like Ben Heck's Jasper Arcade, though we suspect Microsoft is just clearing out excess inventory given that the older PSU won't damage the Jasper machines. Any others out there run into any holiday luck? Let us know!

We love a good hacker vs. hardware battle, and while Microsoft has thus far done a reasonably good job of keeping miscreants from diddling with the details of the Xbox 360's firmware, applying patches and dropping ban hammers on those who don't comply, as of this morning it seems to be losing the arms race. Team Jungle has released version 1.5 of its IXtreme firmware, allowing for (relatively) easy cracking and unlocking of Xbox 360 consoles containing LiteOn, BenQ, and Samsung DVD drives (i.e. the majority of them). That leaves only Hitachi owners out in the cold, but if that's you don't fret: your version is just a few weeks away. Happy homebrewing!

It may not be quite as elaborate as some console paint jobs, but if you're looking to add a touch of Japan to your Xbox 360, you may want to follow the lead of deviantART member Ricepuppet, who has managed to create a relatively faithful Domo-kun themed console. As you can see above, that even includes a matching controller, which we presume is still fully functional (and, apparently, twice as likely to slip out of your hands). Just don't go too nuts and decide to pair it with a Hello Kitty-themed Wii, there's no telling how they might get along.

News via aep
ShadowTJ has released a new version of his Xbox Emulator for Windows, heres the release info:
Dxbx 0.0.9 is out now!
With this special xmas release of Dxbx we want to show anyone who
is still following our progress what has been changed in Dxbx.
Not everyone has the possibility to compile the Dxbx sources from sourceforge,
so for your convenience we provide a setup too.
A lot has happened since the 0.0.7 official and the none-official 0.0.8 release.
Unlike version 0.0.7, we now provide the necessary DLL files inside the setup.
So no more searching for the dll`s on the internet.
DLL`s that are included:
Cxbxkrnl.dll - this is the original Cxbx DLL
DxbxKrnl.dll - this is the dxbx delphi ported version of Cxbxkrn.dll
When using the Cxbx.DLL, Dxbx can run up until the movie in Turok
(the main game we're trying to emulate first), but not any further, as
controls are not fully implemented yet.
When selecting loading an game's default.xbe file, Dxbx converts it
to a windows-native executable; Make sure you save that file in the
same folder as where the game's Xbe file was located.
(You could save the exe somewhere else, but this has not been tested.)
Also the DLL`s of Cxbx or Dxbx need to copied to the game folder.
Don't forget : When using Cxbx.DLL, you'll also need to make sure
that msvcrtd.dll and cklibver.dll are in your path!
About XDKTracker : A few visual improvements where made and
lots of xbox games are added to our collection.
Special thanks to N1ghtjar and Nexxus for making so much xbe dumps!
Thanks to them and others, we now have a significant list of 300+ game
dumps (among other things containing the XDK versions they are linked to).
Xiso has also lots of changes, especially speeding up to extract the Xiso format.
Happy holidays everyone.

Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi was always going to make three 360 games. Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey and action RPG Cry On. Now, according to 1UP, he'll only be releasing two.
Developer and Mistwalker collaborator (they worked on Blue Dragon DS) AQ Interactive have announced that the project - which has been missing in action for a few years anyway (it was first announced in 2005) - is now dead in the water.
A statement issued by the company says "AQI decided to cancel the project after analyzing the current market environment and forecasts for the future. We deeply apologize for troubling those who were awaiting its release".

That Combustible map pack didn't seem to ignite much passion into Gears of War 2, as the shoe-in for Best Shooter Involving a Chain Saw-infused Rifle Award remains numero quartro on the Xbox Live activity chart for last week. The game was also 4th place the week prior, and 3rd place for two consecutive weeks before that. Far from being a bad position, but it's certainly not dominating the service like its predecessor.
Staying strong at top is Halo 3, followed by the Call of Duty: World at War and CoD4, respectively. The promotional Dash of Destruction managed to take 6th place, and somehow bumped Fallout 3 from 8th to oblivion.

We've seen some pretty low tricks when it comes to giving what appears to be a gaming console to a junior, but we're pleading -- nay, insisting -- that you don't ever buy in on either of these in an attempt to pull the wool over a kiddo's eyes. Straight from a shady warehouse in China comes Rodisson Technologies' totally ridiculous Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 clones, both of which can only play 8-bit titles. The worst part, however, isn't the complete lack of effort in knocking these systems off with any level of pride; rather, it's the 10,000 item minimum order quantity. Thanks, but no thanks.

When we first read that The Boss was coming to Guitar Hero World Tour, our reaction was a resounding "!". Turns out it's the other "The Boss," Bruce Springsteen, who is also a master of CQC. Little-known fact!
Activision will be offering two free DLC tracks day-and-date with the release of the All-American rocker's new album, Working on a Dream. The classic "Born to Run" will be joined by "My Lucky Day," a single off the new release. The songs will be available for download on both PSN and XBLM from January 27 through February 4.

Ben Heck] has put the final touches on his Pelican case Xbox 360. This prototype was constructed for use by troops stationed overseas. When he announced the project in October, he already knew some of the hurdles he would face. An industrial Velcro style product is used for all component mounting so the air/water-tight seal of the case remains intact. He sanded the surface so that it would stick better. [Ben] mentions that he ended up using less Velcro than he planned on because it held so well. Not being able to cut the case meant the DVD drive had to be converted to top-loading. The tray movement limit switches have been relocated so they now respond to lid position. He regrets not being able to motorize the lid, but let it go since this is still just the first attempt. Extra copper was added to all of the heat sinks to improve cooling. This Xbox is for sale and he’d love to hear from anyone that wants to put it into production. The write-up has a ton of pictures and you can see a video of it below.

Frustrated by the constant din of his Xbox 360, [Janne Ström] took action. The original case wouldn’t have near enough room for the additional cooling that needed to be installed, so he picked up Lian Li’s XB01 case replacement. He followed the illustrated disassembly guide to get the Xbox stripped down to just its motherboard. He then began fitting his coolers of choice: two massive Noctua NH-U9D0 units originally intended for AMD Opterons. The asymmetric heat sinks are intended for applications like this where dual sockets could make other devices difficult to place. Clearly the hardest part of the installation was applying an appropriate amount of thermal compound and then slowly tightening the hold down screws to guarantee even pressure. The resultant system ended up being quieter than the first camera he attempted to record it with and the attached power supply. You can see a video of it below.

Itching for a gratis Xbox Live Arcade game? Microsoft is offering one of five titles for free, but you have to follow these three steps:- Sign up for 12 months of Xbox Live Gold between now and January 5. It must be done directly through Xbox Live, meaning you can't use that prepaid card your mom or significant other bought you as a gift.
- Decide what game you want free: Zuma, Marble Blast, Sonic the Hedgehog, Assault Heroes or 3D Ultra Minigolf. Do this step in your head.
- Download a gamer pic or theme related to the game. Only the first one counts, so make sure you didn't skip Step 2 before downloading a picture of a putter when you're hoping to nab Sonic.
See, folks? Even with digital distribution, TINSTAAFL applies: There is no such thing as a free lunch. Of course, if you were needing to upgrade or renew your subscription anyways, you might as well get something extra out of it.

Several unannounced SEGA-made games recently popped up on the Entertainment Software Rating Board's (ESRB) website. Apparently the publisher is using the Wii's Virtual Console as a sort of test bed as the listed titles have already released on Nintendo's System (not to mention the fact that they're also classic games). Now coming to Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network are Gunstar Heroes, Phantasy Star II, Comix Zone and Sonic The Hedgehog 3. There's no indication of a release date for any of the titles, but as soon as we get wind of one, we'll let you know.

A great special offer from Play asia:
The world is in chaos. After years of neglecting the environment, nature has fought back with devastating effect.
Earthquakes, floods and tornadoes have reduced the United States to a mere shadow of its former self, effectively cutting the East and West coasts off from each other.
And with division has come dissent.
Thousands died and those that survived were forced to adapt to a new way of life. In the East, the path to survival was paved with technology and cybernetic enhancement. In the West, survival of the fittest took on new meaning with stem cell research and genetic modification.
These two ideologies and ways of life lead to a division so great that war is the only course of action.
In Fracture™, take on the role of Atlantic Alliance soldier Jet Brody as he goes against the genetically enhanced Pacificans and their fanatical leader General Nathan Sheridan.
Unleash the power of terrain-deforming weapons that literally reshape the battlefield before your very eyes, and decimate your enemies with a wide array of weapons with earth-shattering effects.
Reshape the battlefield. Reshape the battle. For the sake of mankind and the future of humanity
The trend of hit region free Xbox360™ games as weekly specials continues with Fracture. The game is available at an unbeatable bargain price of US$ 11.90 only.
The maximum amount of purchase is set to 1 unit per customer. You have to get your acts together soon, as we only have a very limited supply.
