Speaking with ijji.com earlier today, just before we got a hands-on with upcoming MMOFPS Huxley: The Dystopia, the company confirmed to us that the game is going with the microtransaction model. Furthermore, the once announced cross-platform play between Xbox 360 and PC has been cut from the game.
Boo Won Kim told us during a presentation of ijji.com's upcoming offerings that, "At this point, yes, [Huxley is] microtransaction supported." We then asked whether or not the cross-platform component of the game -- once it's main selling point -- had been cut. Andy Wong confirmed to us the fact, though he added that that's only the case "at this point." Considering how long the game has been in development -- and the heavily twitch-movement focused gameplay -- we're putting our money on the cross-platform functionality never returning

Microsoft has promoted Lionhead boss Peter Molyneux to creative director of Microsoft Game Studios in Europe.
Molyneux will oversee the creative output of all internal studios as well as Microsoft's third-party development partners, acting in a leadership role to help ideas come to fruition as well as ensuring better communication and understanding within the group.
"The best way for us to make sure our platforms evolve in a way that enables the best creative experiences is to make sure our creative leaders are closely tied into the work that's going on with the platform team," detailed Phil Spencer, general manager of Microsoft Game Studios, speaking exclusively to GamesIndustry.biz.
"What we're asking Peter to do is a creative director role for us in Europe, overseeing all of the creative work that goes on at our studios in the UK and Europe, and the different projects that we have with external partners.
"His role there is to not only help the collaborations and to bring both the thinking from that region back to the platform and Microsoft Game Studios as different things are incubating and being worked on, but the reverse is also true, of taking global knowledge of our platform efforts and different efforts at MGS and help provide context and guidance to those teams."
Molyneux said the promotion isn't about leaving his own mark on other studio's titles, but rather helping internal and external talent realise their creative visions within the Microsoft development ecosystem.
"What you're not going to see is ten Peter Molyneux games. The value of this role is for someone like myself going in and making those little tiny lights of an idea shine as brightly as possible and ensuring everybody within the organisation clearly understands why we're making those titles, the purpose of those titles and their importance to Microsoft overall.
"All I'm going to be doing is making sure those lights are as bright as possible. People at Rare and other European studios are super, super bright and creative people and I'll learn as much about design from them as they would from me."
Molyneux said he hopes to help foster the passion of individuals, and in turn push Microsoft's talent to drop preconceived ideas about game design and strive for innovation.
"I'm definitely not going to go in and say 'this is a dumb idea' and 'this is a good idea'. I'm more about making sure they really are doing the experiences they're passionate about. Because passion is really central.
"That's probably going to involve innovation, I'm going to be pushing them more on the innovation side, especially with project Natal, and saying, 'look, don't think you've got all of your design comforts here any more, let's think of a new way of doing all that.'"
He also made it clear that he will still remain studio boss of Lionhead, and continues to work on the two titles currently in development at the studio.

E3’09: Retro full game download service moves aside as 360 equivalent prepares to launch
Microsoft has confirmed that there will be no further releases on its Xbox Originals digital download service.
The retail channel, which arrived in December 2007, offered 360 owners the chance to download full game releases from its Xbox catalogue. The platform holder told IGN that it has “finished its portfolio” for the service.
The move comes shortly after Microsoft’s E3 announcement that it is preparing an Xbox 360 full game delivery service that will allow gamers to bypass retail and download titles directly to their machines.
Xbox Originals never quite lived up to its potential. Of the 850 or so games released for Xbox, only 26 ever made it onto the UK arm of the Originals portal.
Whilst hits such as Fable, GTA: San Andreas, Jade Empire, Ninja Gaiden and Halo were a huge plus for Xbox Originals, its reception was dampened by a number of less well-received titles such as Zapper, Gauntlet, Blowout and Raze’s Hell.

E3’09: Microsoft Games Studio boss Shane Kim adds that Xbox 360 will be around until 2015
It’s not the twinning but the taking part that counts, right? Nope. How you win or lose something like E3 is hard to fathom, but the reaction to Microsoft’s conference was certainly positive – so much so that the Xbox 360 platform holder seems happy to declare victory.
“I think we won,” Microsoft Games Studios boss Shane Kim told Venturebeat. “It's not just me saying that. It's pretty universal.
“We had something very special, starting with the games portfolio. We had a lot of content for a normal E3 briefing. But Project Natal doesn't come along every year, and it is very difficult to match.”
Kim went on to explain that he believes the Xbox 360 can enjoy the same ten-year life-cycle that Sony so proudly touts for its hardware.
“We firmly believe that the Xbox 360 has a life cycle through 2015,” he stated. “Project Natal is a great innovation. It will work with every Xbox 360 sold. It’s not about pushing more pixels on the screen. It’s about how to break down barriers that stop people from playing games.”
Project Natal is not due out until mid 2010. Sony has previously stated its motion technology will be ready for spring.

E3’09: Q3 2010 release dated mooted for mysterious new Bungie title
Halo developer Bungie has stated that the recently revealed Halo Reach will not reach the market until autumn 2010, a year after the release of the next chapter in the Halo franchise – Halo ODST.
Speaking to GameSpot regarding the already touted Halo Reach beta, an unnamed Bungie staffer explained: “We don’t have an actual firm date for [the beta] yet, but I don't anticipate it being day and date with [Halo ODST].
“I can say you will need the Halo 3: ODST disc to access the beta when it does become available. I can confirm that that beta will go live sometime between the release of Halo 3: ODST on September 22nd and the release of Halo: Reach next fall.”
Literally nothing of the game is known as of yet. The obvious presumption is that it will be a prequel FPS, though Microsoft may be keen to take the brand into other genres as it did with Ensemble’s successful RTS Halo Wars.

Developer lashes out against allegations that the Xbox title was a ‘recruiting tool for terrorism’
Days after T-Enterprise told MCV that it would release its controversial Guantanamo Bay game over Xbox Live if it couldn’t find a publishing partner, the Scottish developer has cancelled the project.
Slated for release in January 2010, the title has been cancelled about a quarter of the way through development.
In a written statement, T-Enterprise Director Zarrar Chishti said that the game has been pulled due to “the extreme reaction that the game and its popular misconceptions have provoked.”
Rendition: Guantanamo would have been T-Enterprise’s first Xbox 360 title. It would have cost £250,000 to make and was based on a game engine the studio has been developing for two years. The game tasked players with breaking out of a fictional Guantanamo, where immoral biological tests were conducted on inmates.
“Unfortunately, much of the speculation regarding the game itself made by various publications and websites has been inaccurate and ill informed,” said Chishti.
“Based on a simple teaser trailer that actually revealed little of the game, many conclusions were reached that have absolutely no foundation whatsoever. It was never designed to be ‘propaganda’ or ‘a recruiting tool for terrorism’.
Neither was it designed to glamorise terrorism as has been reported.”
A former detainee in Guantanamo Bay, Moazzam Begg, had been consulted to assist with the creation of the game.
T-Enterprise had repeatedly distanced itself from the contemporaneous controversial title Six Days In Fallujah, which itself was developed apparently with advice from insurgents who mounted attacks against US forces in the Iraqi War.
“First and foremost, the main character [in Rendition: Guantanamo] was not Moazzam Begg,” read the statement. “Instead, his name was Adam. He happened to be involved in a case of mistaken identity and so was never a terrorist.”
T-Enterprise added that it is “against all forms of terrorism” and “would never seek to advocate otherwise.”
Chishti insisted that no American military personnel would have been killed within the game, as the game is a mercenary-run institution.
“We support the British and American troops that fight the war against terrorism to make the world a safer place and would not make a game that said otherwise,” said Chishti.
“Having clarified our position on terrorism, I would now like to refute all suggestions that the game was in any way linked to Al Qaeda. T-Enterprise has never had and would never have a link to Al Qaeda in any way, shape or form. Furthermore, we would certainly not facilitate a means of funding for any group that undertook terrorist activities. The game was simply designed to be an action video game that adults could enjoy.”

We had a hunch that 3DV Systems' technology -- which we actually toyed with back at CES 2008 -- had something to do with Microsoft's newly unveiled Project Natal motion tracking solution, and today details have trickled in to us confirming as much. As the story goes, 3DV Systems was initially hoping to have the ZCam in the manufacturing process by the tail end of 2008, but Microsoft swooped in and acquired the outfit just weeks after it blew minds in January. At the time, not much thought was given to the pickup; now, however, we're treated to a bona fide ZCam brochure which details the actual specifications behind the Xbox 360's newest friend. Granted, we have every reason to believe that Natal has advanced significantly from what you'll see in the gallery below, but it's still a tasty nugget of behind-the-scenes information. Of note, the former 3DV Systems VP of Business Development was quoted as saying that the target retail price of the ZCam was $100, though it still had aways to go as of early 2008.

Microsoft will be offering full retail games like Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect as downloadable games via Xbox Live Marketplace Games On Demand starting this August. They'll boot straight from your hard drive, just like installable games.
That's all great. But some games don't quite work as intended when played from the hard drive. Games like Grand Theft Auto IV and Halo 3 don't perform up to par, because they were designed to be streamed from a DVD. And Microsoft may be addressing that problem when it launches Games On Demand.
Microsoft reps said that any game planned for a Games On Demand will go through a "rigorous" QA process to make sure they work precisely as intended when played from a hard drive.
And mega blockbusters like Halo 3 and GTA IV may need to be "fixed" to become a Games On Demand, something Microsoft seems willing to do.
Oh and one other thing. Those Xbox 360 games you can buy as Games On Demand downloads will be available for purchase via the Web Marketplace, but not through Amazon.com.

It took a little doing on our part, but we've finally got a new detail for you about Halo: Reach. Are you ready for this? It's an FPS. Actually, Microsoft's John Schappert told us "Of course it's an FPS," which seemed a little cheeky from a company that recently released a Halo RTS. But who are we to judge?
So, there you go. FPS. And also ... no, that's it. But hey, it's something, right?

Microsoft announced at E3 2008 that a South Park game was coming to Xbox Live Arcade. We couldn't find it at E3 2009, but we did get an update.
"South Park actually is coming," John Schappert, Microsoft's corporate vice president of interactive entertainment LIVE, software and services said in an interview with Kotaku yesterday. "I think what you saw in our [Xbox 360 press] briefing is that there was so much rapid-fire information that we just didn't have time to cover everything."
Schappert said the game is still a Live Arcade game, that it's "a lot of fun and looks great." It will be out this year, he added, but declined to provide any gameplay details.
The game has been in development at Doublesix and has been listed on Xbox.com as a strategy game.

Microsoft has outed an Xbox Live Arcade version of motorbike game RedLynx Trials. Yes! Goal!
Dubbed Trials HD, it packs over 50 high-definition courses sporting sparkly graphical effects like explosions. Look!
Furthermore, Trials HD allows rider-customisation, has bikes to unlock and includes the crucial global and friend leaderboards to compete on and climb.
There's no date or price on the Xbox.com product page, but we'll extend our feelers and let you know what comes back.
Trials works around the simple premise of getting from the start to the end of a 2D course in the fastest time possible. But there are obstacles in the way, and the physics engine means plenty of stuntbike crashes and broken limbs, forcing players to restart from the nearest checkpoint. And restarts - faults - lower the overall score. Try again. And again. And so on.

Major Nelson just confirmed via his Twitter that Xbox Live will be receiving a care package this winter in the form of Rare's Perfect Dark. Major made no reference to price or improvements to game content, aside from mentioning that the title will run in 1080p and that fans will be able to nab it this winter. And if you are a fan of Perfect Dark, keep an eye out for a free theme releasing tomorrow on Xbox Live.

Imagine you work for a small peripheral development studio who's been working on a motion controller for the Xbox 360 for ages. Now imagine that Microsoft announces their own revolutionary motion control peripheral -- one that's supported by a bazillion dollar technology juggernaut. "Crap in a hat," you would likely proclaim. However, Performance Designed Products, creators of the long-in-development Game Trak Freedom controller, doesn't seem daunted by Microsoft's recently unveiled Project Natal tech.
During our tour of PDP's E3 booth, we had a chance to ask Senior VP of Marketing John Moore about the manufacturer's new impressive competition. According to Moore, "we met with Microsoft, and they gave us a heads-up about Natal, so we knew it was coming." Still, it's not all doom and gloom. Moore said he thinks "there is still a need and room in the market for interactive peripherals." Moreover, he claimed "there's a possibility of using our infrared controller technology and incorporating it into Microsoft's new product."
We'll have our hands-on impressions of the Game Trak Freedom, as well as its bundled software counterpart Squeeballs, within the next couple of days.

Harmonix creative director Josh Randall has revealed that downloadable content for The Beatles: Rock Band will not be available for other Rock Band games or vice versa.
The Beatles game is a standalone and separate entry in the series, he told 1UP.
We were given a Beatles: Rock Band extravaganza during the Microsoft E3 conference, comprising a fancy a trailer, a live on-stage demonstration by the Harmonix house band and special guest appearances from Yoko Ono, Olivia Harrison, Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Star.
"The game is great, the graphics are great, we were great," said Ringo, through his big silly lips.
Abbey Road will be the first album DLC for The Beatles: Rock Band, and Microsoft is offering "All You Need Is Love" on Xbox Live and donating the proceeds to charity.

THQ has given bible-based bash-'em-up Darksiders: Wrath of War a release date of 1st January 2010.
That's what a THQ E3 webcast said (according to GameSpot), even though that's not only a Thursday but also New Year's Day. A 2nd January launch might be more realistic but no less bizarre.
Our local THQ branch just confirmed the date, which was apparently given to investors. There's no further UK or European clarification.
Darksiders is a bit like God of War or Dante's Inferno or Devil May Cry, but based on the Book of Revelation instead. The apocalypse and battle of armageddon are the subject materials at hand - particularly The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, of which you play one.
He's called War and he carries a bloody great sword around to chop things up. His horse is called Ruin and he can upgrade abilities along the way.
It's up against tough competition, but Darksiders has a clearer path to success on Xbox 360, whose audience might want to keep an watchful eye out. PS3 fans can expect God of War III in March 2010, after all.

Microsoft's Shane Kim has said that the systems making up Project Natal have been in development "for a long time", and distanced the full-body motion-sensing camera from the company's acquisition of 3DV Systems.
Following the announcement at the platform holder's E3 conference on Monday, many assumed that Natal's technology and 3DV's (seen in late 2007 prior to the company's acquisition) were one and the same, but Kim told VentureBeat, "At Microsoft Research, we have had a lot of working going on for a long time."
His colleague Aaron Greenberg was even more direct. Asked whether Natal was derived from 3DV technology, he told Eurogamer: "No, we built this in house."
"None of those rumours did justice to what we were actually doing with Project Natal. People expected a controller you put in your hands," Kim said to VentureBeat. "We have done a lot of work in natural user interfaces. Voice recognition is one of them. That's why we have been able to deliver development kits for it this week."
Microsoft hasn't gone it completely alone though, as Kim admitted "it's a combination of partners and our own software", and some have theorised that acquisitions like 3DV's were designed to insure the company against similar patents. "You have to be very aware," Kim said. "We want to ensure that we have great intellectual property protection. You have to have a strong legal approach, and this is not easy stuff. It has to be all buttoned up, legally. We have had a very concerted focus on this."
Elsewhere in the interview, Kim implied that Natal was as good as a new console anyway. "We firmly believe that the Xbox 360 has a life cycle through 2015," he said when asked about future plans for Xbox.

Microsoft's upcoming games-on-demand service for Xbox Live will be updated every week, and it won't be a problem to re-download things.
Announced on Monday after the Microsoft conference, the service is starting up this August, and the platform holder said yesterday that prices would be "comparable" to retail - with USD 19.99 for LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga offered as an example.
Games can also be re-downloaded if you have to delete them to make space at some point in the future, and this will also mean that if by some miracle you need to buy a new Xbox 360 or get yours replaced, it won't be a problem to download them again either.
Other than LEGO Star Wars, games confirmed for the service so far are BioShock, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, Sonic the Hedgehog, Oblivion, Crackdown, Colin McRae DiRT and Call of Duty 2.

Tony Hawk doesn't think too much of the new Xbox 360 motion-sensing camera and will happily stick to his plastic skateboard thank you very much.
"We actually tried to get [Tony Hawk: Ride] running with a camera, but it wasn't accurate enough," Hawk told MTV Multiplayer. "Plus you can't really do ollies, grabs and flips when you're just standing on nothing."
Hawk's board peripheral has in-built accelerometers as well as sensors that judge hand and foot movement off of the deck. Players aren't required to match moves exactly, but tricks like manuals (wheelies) and 180 spins can be fully recreated in living rooms.
The Xbox 360 motion-sensing camera was unveiled during Microsoft's E3 conference and demonstrated by overseer-with-the-glasses Kudo Tsunoda. But our friend Peter Molyneux from Lionhead stole the show unveiling Milo & Kate, his top secret camera-game that has unnervingly impressive interaction with a little boy using the new Project Natal Xbox 360 tech.
