Another Microsoft rep is comparing the 2010 launch of the Project Natal peripheral to a new console release. Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft Game Studios, told MCV that Natal will be like a new launch for the Xbox 360.
"When Natal comes out it will feel like a new generation has arrived," he said, echoing comments made by Shane Kim. "I see it as like the launch of the Xbox 360 back in 2005 – there will be a launch portfolio of games to support it." Will there also be a massive shortage into the next year?
Spencer denied the rumors of an actual new hardware launch once again, saying that Microsoft intends to make sure the original 360 is a "huge return on investment" for Microsoft, developers, and owners. And if enough Microsoft staffers tell us there won't be a new console next year, we might even start to believe it.

LucasArts may be ready to drop some new downloadable content for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, as five new Xbox 360 achievements have expanded not only the possible gamerscore, but the game's character roster as well. Warning, spoilers ahead.
The five new achievements boost the Star Wars: The Force Unleashed achievement count from 1220—220 of those points added alongside the Jedi Temple Mission Pack DLC—to 1345 points. Thing is, LucasArts hasn't publicly announced that new downloadable content. But it appears it will soon.
The spoiler-filled possible new additions to The Force Unleashed are after this.
And The Quarterback is Toast - Defeat Boba Fett
Skywalker Style - Meet Jabba and defeat his pet using the pit gate
No More Lies, Old Man - Defeat Obi-Wan, before and after he becomes more powerful than you can possibly imagine
Hot Bot - Use the hot irons three times on the Gonk Power Droid
Jawa Juicer - Crush 5 Jawas by using the grinder in the Garbage Processing Room
Nice Die Hard reference, guys. And way to fulfill our Gonk Power Droid torture fantasies.
We've contacted LucasArts to get clarification on these new unannounced additions, but haven't yet heard back. That may be because the new DLC announcement was planned to be made at next week's Comic-Con Star Wars Spectacular keynote, possibly one of the "world exclusive announcements" the publisher has planned.

We feel for our UK-based gaming brothers-and-sisters-in-arms. We've seen the gaming industry putting them through the financial wringer many times in the past, but a recent report from MCV describes the cruelest economic hardships they've ever had to face -- Activision has kicked the UK price of Modern Warfare 2 up to £54.99 (close to $90), and according to the report, other publishers may plan to follow suit, raising the prices on their titles as we move into the holiday season.
The price hike is attributed to rising game development costs and the faltering strength of the pound -- still, compared to last holiday season, when titles like Prince of Persia and Far Cry 2 hit store shelves for around £40, it's a pretty sizable leap to make in just one year. However, not everyone is following Activision's example -- Electronic Arts responded to MCV's report, confirming that it would not increase the RRP of its holiday releases. We'll see which strategy pays off once the smoke from the holiday shopping season clears

Arguably the two best Xbox Live Arcade games to ever hit the system are Castle Crashers and Braid, two independent games. If rumors are to be believed, Microsoft has become quick to forget such things, as the platform holder is planning to "dramatically reduce" the amount of indie games to hit the service.
The gossip stems from the idea that Microsoft is worried about too much software cluttering up XBLA, and it's being reported that a number of major publishers have put pressure on MS to reduce the amount of competition for their own games, shutting out indie devs so that stuff like Bliss Island has a better chance to flourish.
Apparently, there are different rules for XBLA developers, depending on whether or not a major publisher backs you up. Indie devs are upset that their games are rejected for being "too similar" to other games on the service, while big publishers are allowed to "flood it with retro remakes."

Forget about watching the seemingly infinite amount of stages roll by as Lance Armstrong attempts to win his eighth yellow jersey in the world's most famous bicycle race. Do it yourself! And by yourself we mean using nothing more than your fingers and thumbs when Tour de France 2009: The Official Game comes to Xbox Live today for 800 ($10) . Who needs all that real legwork anyhow?
Cyanide Studios, the brains behind the recent Blood Bowl and the popular-in-some-other-country Cycling Manager series must have been quietly working on this in their spare time, because it caught all of us off-guard, including Xbox Live's Major Nelson. But why not release this game just before the actual Tour de France, instead of smack dab in the middle of it? We may never know.
You can play two players locally, and race up to four simultaneously on Xbox Live using one of the official teams in the current race. We just wish they would have included a drug testing minigame or something -- you know, to add some realism. Catch all the pedal-pumping power in the preview trailer right here

When we first discussed kung-fu action game Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao, we were so unnerved by the lack of any actual, on-screen tigers that we couldn't bring ourselves to report much actual info about it. Now, we've got some more details courtesy of Eurogamer, including a price (1200 MS points/$15) and a release window (sometime this August).
If you're having trouble placing Invincible Tiger, you might remember it's presented in stereoscopic 3D, if you've got a TV that works with that sort of thing ... which you probably don't. Trust us.

Team 17 studio director Martyn Brown has told GamesIndustry.biz that he believes the opportunities for new companies looking to self-publish on Micrisoft's Xbox Live Arcade platform are diminishing, and that it's those teams which already have the relationships and experience that have the best chance for success.
Team 17, which currently has two Worms titles in the XBLA top ten - with a much-anticipated re-imagining of classic Amiga game Alien Breed slated for around October - has enjoyed enough success on the platform to ignore retail completely. But while traditional publishing has closed its doors due to the high cost of entry, Brown warned that the same thing was happening with XBLA.
"I think to a great extent it's already happened," he told GamesIndustry.biz in the first part of a two-part available now. "It's difficult for any third party, start-up, whatever, to get titles onto Live because there are only so many titles appearing.
"Obviously I can't speak for Microsoft or Sony in particular, but they're kind of guided by their portfolio of content, so for anything to come out they've got to like it, got to like its appeal.
"So if people want to put stuff on those platforms they've got to put a lot of thought into the kind of titles they're preparing - you've got to give yourself the best chance. Sony tends to like the new stuff, but that's quite often not the most mass market stuff.
"If you've got something that's really techy and quirky then you're best bet to get a listen is probably Sony, whereas with Microsoft you're really going for the commercial mass market audience - which they're had a lot of success with.
"But it's very, very tricky - I know the amount of applications that get sent for Live Arcade is huge, and there's a finite door there," he added.
And he went on to explain that as a self-publisher that's worked with the platform for several years, he felt that getting content onto XBLA was "massively" harder now than it was back then.
"There just aren't that many gaps in the portfolio - if you look at the sales charts over the last 18 months, most of it's been established IP," he said. "There are a few new IPs in there, but only a few. I think that's going to be the case, really - people will see brand extensions going on there, and all the rest of it, but it's very, very tricky."

Speaking at the Develop Conference 2009, employees from Rare have been speaking about their future plans for the New Xbox Experience Avatars, which they created for Microsoft.
"We have lots of ideas for the future of Avatars," said Louise Ridgeway, head of animation at Rare. "There's going to be more clothing and more games and accessories, and a lot more new ideas using what we have created. We're very excited by thinking about how Avatars will work with Natal, too."
Ridgeway, who was joined on stage by Rare's art director Stephen Mcfarlane, spoke at a session that detailed the entire production process creating the NXE Avatars.
Mcfarlane also discussed how Rare will make use of its time spent on avatars when creating future games: "We've gone along for many years doing certain games in a certain way. Now we've learnt more about how to work to a fixed deadline, and be more streamlined. Really, Avatars have taught us to be more efficient as a studio, and that's going to help us vastly moving forward."

NaturalMotion, the animation technology company behind the euphoria engine, today announced that morpheme, the company's animation engine and graphical authoring tool, is being used in Activision Publishing, Inc.'s (Nasdaq: ATVI) upcoming Tony Hawk: RIDE, developed by Chicago-based Robomodo.
morpheme is robust animation middleware designed to give developers and animators unprecedented creative control over the look of their final in-game animation by allowing them to author and preview blends, blend trees and transition graphs in real time.

"morpheme will allow Robomodo to match that standard of realism in their character animations, recreating the exhilarating thrills and painful spills of real skateboarding to the high degree of accuracy required for such an innovative game."
Tony Hawk: RIDE is in development for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and the PLAYSTATION 3 computer entertainment system. A version for the Wii home videogame system, also utilising morpheme, is being developed by Buzz Monkey Software. Major Nelson is the voice of Xbox Live in the US and most English speaking countries. He has a lot of reach, but due to language barriers he can’t be the Xbox spokesperson for, say, Taiwan. So, Taiwan is getting their own figurehead — an Xbox Angel.
Microsoft’s Xbox division in Taiwan is holding an open casting call for the position . To join the search you have to be a loquacious female, over 18, and play an Xbox 360 for at least 360 minutes per week. Four semi-finalists will be selected by a panel of judges. Afterwards, the Xbox Angel will be chosen by the Internet on August 18.
The winner gets a role as an Xbox ambassador, which means promoting the Xbox 360 over social network services like Facebook, hosting Xbox Live events, and writing a column. On top of exposure, the Xbox Angel gets showered with gifts including an Xbox 360, three month Xbox Live subscription card, games, and a 35,000 NT stipend for three months of work (appx. $1090).
It’s too early to tell who the first Xbox Angel will be, but based on clicks “Rabby” and “Mini” are getting the most attention. “Rabby” is on the left and “Mini” is on the right.

Having spoken with several "concerned" developers, Screen Play is reporting that Microsoft have begun to "dramatically reduce" the number of independent titles they publish on Xbox Live Arcade.
It's believed that the crackdown is a response to fears that there's simply too much stuff available on the service, and that major publishers are behind the move, having been pressuring Microsoft to cut down on the number of games competing for advertising and awareness.
Independent developers are also upset at what they feel are two different sets of rules for publishers, one for indies and one for major publishers, which sees "independent games rejected for being too similar to an existing title on the service, yet major publishers were able to flood it with retro remakes".
We've contacted Microsoft for comment, and will update if we hear back from them.

July 14th, 2009, 21:09 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft's Charlie Skilbeck believes Xbox Live Community Games are "poised to break out" and that we're turning the corner toward developers making real money on the channel.
"I'm fairly sure nobody has made a million bucks yet, but I'm fairly certain it's only a matter of time," Skilbeck, a developer account manager, told a Develop Conference audience during his Community Games for Fun and Profit talk today.
"We're getting to the point now where we can see a momentum behind the platform that we think is definitely going to catapult it into proper money-making territory. We know there are multiple games that have made a profit already."
One of those games that hasn't, however, is Clover, whose maker Daniel Jones is an outspoken critic on the "financial validity" and "woeful marketing" of the Community Games - now Indie Games - service.
"Those guys," Skilbeck added, addressing Tank Strike maker Daniel Steger as well, "I understand they're upset, they've made a lot of effort and it hasn't done what they expected. But I know it has exceeded expectations for others."
Skilbeck said he felt that, like the iPhone App Store, the Indie Games channel is getting over the initial wave of "junk" and apps that come with running an "unmanaged portfolio". Quality projects are close, he said, claiming that he knows "plenty" of multi-month, multi-man projects in development right now.
"We can expect the quality bar to start rising rapidly," boasted Skilbeck. "It's definitely poised to break out."
Apparently over one million people have downloaded the XNA Game Studio tools and the graph of submissions is "rising rapidly". "It's getting real traction now," said Skilbeck, who announced that 338 games are approved for download today. And that number, he added, is likely to grow "substantially".
Skilbeck wouldn't bet on a timeframe for us to see these "commercially viable" projects from more ambitious teams, however.
Another criticism levelled at the Indie Games channel has been exposure for the games. Skilbeck isn't aware of any changes being made to the dashboard to address this, but reckons the soon-to-be-implemented community ratings will help dramatically.
"What we're going to see is the community rating feature make a big difference. We expect that to change the game completely, in terms of being able to find the gooduns. That's the problem, right? With the community ranking feature I think we're just going to suddenly see the real gooduns become really visible."
Migrating to Xbox Live Arcade is another possibility, but to do this a game must have a publisher. Going it alone is "not happening any time soon", and there are added costs to doing so. But if that is the goal, then the Indie Games channel can be used as an effective prototyping tool.
"This is an extremely cheap way to prototype ideas," said Skilbeck, who reckoned a day or two was all one would need to produce a "simple", working project. And, he added, "A really good community game will trump any CV."
Skilbeck wasn't sure about developing and selling solely for PC using XNA, and suggested focusing on Xbox 360 as early as possible in the development cycle. You'll need a premium version of the XNA Game Studio to do so, however, plus a retail Xbox 360 to play your game on. Still, the combined cost of this shouldn't be more than 200 quid.
The Game Studio recently also updated to version 3.1, adding Avatar and Xbox Live Party support - an anticipated feature Skilbeck said will arrive on Xbox 360 with the next dash update, whenever that is.
Natal, too, will eventually be supported, although Skilbeck explained there is a "lag" between feature release and XNA support - Avatars being a case in point.

Microsoft has confirmed two new titles are scheduled to hit Xbox Live Arcade tomorrow.
First up is Madballs in... Babo: Invasion, a game based on the popular Madballs toys from the eighties. You can play as your own avatar, take on up to 16 players online or enjoy four player co-op. There are five combat modes, ten levels and 21 maps. The game will cost 1200 Microsoft Points, equivalent to GBP 10.20 / EUR 14.40.
More retro fun is on the way with The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition. The classic adventure game has been given a 1080p makeover, voiceovers by the original cast, a remastered score and hot-swapping so you can switch between Special Edition and Classic modes at any time. Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana White has declared he's at war with EA Sports after the company allegedly refused a meeting to discuss making a game based on the UFC on the grounds it's "not a real sport".
THQ subsequently partnered with the US based mixed martial arts (MMA) organisation and the company's first effort, UFC Undisputed 2009, has shipped approximately two million units since its May release.
Now EA Sports is planning to release its own rival title, a move that MMA Junkie reports has angered UFC boss White.
"EA Sports told us, 'You're not a real sport,'" White said. "'We wouldn't touch this thing. We want nothing to do with this.'
"We put our asses on the line, THQ and the UFC, to make a videogame deal in the worst economy in the world," White added. "We go out there and do this thing, and it's successful, and now [expletive] EA Sports wants to do a video game. Really? That's not what you told us a year-and-a-half ago.
"You told us you'd never be in business with us. They wouldn't even take a meeting because mixed martial arts disgusted them. This wasn't a real sport. Boy, they got over that real quick, didn't they?"
White is now reportedly ready to blacklist any fighter signing their likeness over to EA from the UFC. Currently, former UFC champion Randy Couture is expected to appear in the title after a court battle with the UFC, but White says others won't be following suit
"I'm not tap-dancing around this thing or whatever," concluded White. "I'm telling you straight-up, I'm at war with them right now. That's how I look at it."
