Fallout 3's Mothership Zeta is ready to teach the Capital Wasteland a lesson with a new perk and weapons. We'd previously received a communique about new weaponry, but Bethesda's Fallout 3 content guy, Jeff Gardiner, tells MTV that there's even more stuff to wrap an itchy trigger finger around.
Beyond the Alien Atomizer and Drone Cannon, there will also be a new rifle, the Alien Disintegrator, and the Cryo Grenade, which will freeze the enemy in its tracks. There's also the new perk, Xenotech Expert, which increases the damage of alien weapons. Hopefully, Zeta will also have plans to teach the wanderer how to make more ammo for these weapons once he's back on terra firma and searching the wastes.

John Carmack has been discussing the advantages and disadvantages of PlayStation 3 versus Xbox 360 development, stating that while games don't require as much compression on Blu-ray, less "sweat equity" has been expended into his studio's Xbox 360 projects.
Upcoming id title Doom 4 will "almost certainly" come on three discs, Carmack told GameInformer in an interview, as reported by VG247, although the studio is working on compression methods that will enable RAGE to ship on just two, since the nature of the game doesn't suit more than that.
"We would love to set the thing up where it filled one Blu-ray disc versus three DVDs, which is about the right mix, but the game just…we can't cut it into a third like that," said Carmack.
"We can cut it into two pieces. We've got two large wastelands on there. We just couldn't make an arbitrary cut."
He doesn't foresee the same being a problem for Doom 4, however.
"Doom 4 is being set up so that it's almost certainly going to be cut up to three DVDs versus one Blu-ray. At least they've got the ability because of the way it's structured."
Storage space aside though, it's been easier for the studio to reach its current development stage on Xbox 360 than it has on PlayStation 3, Carmack revealed, although the Sony console does offer more raw performance.
"The 360 was easier to certainly to get to where we are now. More sweat equity had to be put into the PS3," said the id creative director.
"There's a little bit more theoretical raw performance on the PS3, so we've got a little bit more headroom."

DICE has promised that a handful of Battlefield 1943 weapons will return in Battlefield: Bad Company 2 early next year.
They will be a semi-automatic rifle, a sniper rifle and a sub-machine gun, according to a DICE Tweet (spotted by Joystiq). Although how and where they will be usable is unknown.
Battlefield 1943 roared onto PSN an Xbox 360 early this month atop a wave of critical acclaim - a healthy 8/10 stamp from Eurogamer included. A PC version of Battlefield 1943 is poised for September.
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 won't appear until early next year, but looks set to build on the humorous, story-focused original with aplomb.

Development costs for Ghostbusters: The Game totalled between USD 15 million and USD 20 million, according to a US newspaper.
The Fort Worth Star Telegram reported the figure, according to Kotaku, as part of a profile on Terminal Reality. Last month, actor Dan Aykroyd told If magazine the game did indeed accrue a high budget, saying: "I know they spent a lot of money on this game like USD 12 million or USD 15 million - and that’s a nice budget to do a great game."
Originally set to be published by Vivendi, the game was bought up by Atari when its publisher merged with Activision. Subsequently, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe signed a deal to publish the PlayStation SKU of the game across PAL territories. Upon its release in the UK last month, the game entered the all-formats chart at number four.

Activision Blizzard has revealed that last year's instalment in the Call of Duty shooter series - World at War - has now seen its map packs downloaded over 4 million times.
Two such packs have already been released, with the second of those prompting sales of the game to pass the 11 million mark in June, while a third is now due next month to include three multi-player maps and one Zombie map.
World at War will be followed up later this year by Modern Warfare 2, a game which Activision has touted as the "biggest entertainment launch of all time" and which one analyst believes will sell World at War's lifetime sales numbers by the end of the fiscal year.

Here's a new Red Faction: Guerrilla trailer showcasing the new Demons of the Badlands DLC pack, which is set to go live on PSN and 360 on August 13.
Badlands is set to include "a destructive single-player mission arc" that takes place in new Mars landscape outside of the original game's world. From the movie you can also assume that Marauder characters and tech will feature heavily.

Masaya Matsuura (creator of PaRappa the Rapper and Major Minor's Majestic March) says he and his posse over at NanaOn-Sha are interested in making a music game for Microsoft's Project Natal. "We are thinking about ideas," said Matsuura to Videogamer.com at the UK Develop Conference. " I think any kind of interaction with a camera will be good for music games, but the important thing will be how we can find the new breed of gameplay."
Matsuura thinks he can create something fresh -- something other than the rock genre, which he points out Guitar Hero and Rock Band cover quite well. Instead, he thinks there's room to grow for other sounds: "There is other attractive music, so please try to find another style, another interaction, another gameplay with another type of music."
Activision is breaking out with DJ Hero. So, what could Matsuura work on? Wait a minute... breaking. How about a pure break dance title? Baraver the Breakdancing Beaver? No?

While Team 17's upcoming Alien Breed renewal, Alien Breed Evolution, will be coming to XBLA, PSN and PC, VG247 has learned that the game will be arriving on XBLA a bit earlier than the other two. "It will come to PS3 and it will come to PC as well, but initially it'll be Live Arcade," Team 17's Martyn Brown said.
Why not release on all three platforms simultaneously from the get go? Brown says it has to do with Microsoft giving Team 17 a chance before anyone else would. "They showed a lot of faith in us early doors [British for "early on"] and that's kind of kept going really," Brown notes. He even goes as far as to call the relationship a "first-party publishing relationship" (which is the case for Team 17's other franchise, Worms, but not Alien Breed). Hey, Microsoft, you trying to put a ring on that finger?

Would you like to be one of the movers and shakers to get the upcoming Xbox 360 dashboard update before all the filthy, "regular" people? If so, you'll be happy to know that Major Nelson has just announced an Xbox Live Update preview program. Microsoft ran a similar program prior to the NXE, which allowed lots of gamers everywhere the chance to see all the fabulous updates early.
The new update includes plenty of cool new features, including Games on Demand Movie Parties for Netflix and Avatar Awardables, so we know you want in. To register, simply head over to Microsoft Connect, sign in with the Live ID connected to your Gamertag and then fill out the "Xbox LIVE Update Preview Sign Up" survey. The program is open to both Silver and Gold Xbox Live members, though Major Nelson notes that preference will be given to Gold members. If you make it into the program -- MS is accepting "multiple thousands" of participants -- you should be contacted in about a week.
Good luck!

July 20th, 2009, 21:20 Posted By: wraggster
It's often been said that one of the many advantages of working on console is that you have a fixed set of hardware to work with, that you can "write to the metal" and code to the "bleeding edge" of the spec. However, our sources suggest that this simply isn't an optionfor Xbox 360 developers. Microsoft doesn't allow it. Suspicions were first aroused by a tweet by EA Vancouver's Jim Hejl who revealed that addressing the Xenos GPU on 360 involves using the DirectX APIs, which in turn incurs a cost on CPU resources. Hejl later wrote in a further message that he'd written his own API for manual control of the GPU ring, incurring little or no hit to the main CPU. "Cert would hate it tho," he added mysteriously. According to other dev sources, what that actually means in real terms is that circumventing the use of the standard APIs would result in a submitted game not ever making it past Microsoft's strict certification guidelines which state that all GPU calls need to be routed through DirectX. Compare and contrast with PS3 development, where writing your own command buffers and addressing the RSX chip directly through its LibGCM interface is pretty much the standard way of talking to the hardware. So in real, practical terms, what does this actually mean? First of all, in many situations the CPU usage we're talking about here is not negligible, and in some cases could be the dividing line between a solid or an inconsistent frame rate. However, having control of your own command buffers as you do on PS3 offers up a lot more flexibility. Let's say you're rendering a forest. Chances are that most of the same trees are going to be rendered from one frame to the next, with maybe a 10 per cent variance as the view changes. With Xbox 360, you'll be calling most of the same functions with the same parameters for each frame, while DirectX translates those into command buffers and feeds them to the GPU. With the LibGCM/PS3 approach though, you could build buffers for a set amount of trees across several groups. A simple check could discern if those buffers are still relevant for the next frame, and if so, they can be re-used, whereas with DirectX (and OpenGL for that matter) they will be regenerated anew for each frame. Sounds cool eh? Well in this specific case, there are both advantages and disadvantages. First of all, it's going to require a lot of memory, and that is in short supply on any console – especially on PS3. Secondly, some might call it a somewhat "cheap" optimisation. It'll up your maximum FPS, but won't do anything for the minimum – where optimisation is needed the most. But the point is that this is just one example, and there are many cases where having the choice is a seriously useful option to have in the development toolkit. If all of this sounds pretty harsh on Microsoft, it's worth noting that there is a ton of excellent reasons for standing by this requirement. It means that the platform holder can update the system software and hardware specification and ensure that all games past, present and future will work on all iterations of the console. More than that, in the here and now, it can easily be argued that the implementation of DirectX is a key reason that the Xbox 360's tools and development environment are considered to be generally excellent. Not only that, but game makers are familiar with the standard, and code is easily portable to and from PC. A firm adherence to DirectX is also good news for gamers too: it makes the chances of full backwards compatibility on Xbox Next a far more realistic prospect...

Getting huffy about President Obama using video games as a rhetorical punching bag in speeches on personal responsibility is pointlessly argumentative. But Microsoft has responded to POTUS' latest call-out, this time of the Xbox.
In his speech to the NAACP at its 100th anniversary celebration, Obama said parents can't demand achievement in school and then "fail to support them when they get home. For our kids to excel, we must accept our own responsibilities. That means putting away the Xbox and putting our kids to bed at a reasonable hour."
It was notable to me in that, in the first African-American president's first address to the African-American community, at a gathering of that community's premier advocacy organization, the Xbox line was used in the lead paragraph by The New York Times.
Anyway, Microsoft's reply agreed with the president, in principle, and touted its console's parental controls.
We agree with President Obama that it's a time for families to work together so that kids use media in ways that are safe, healthy and balanced. Xbox 360 is the only console gaming system that has a timer feature allowing parents to set time limits for their kids, as well as parent controls to enable parents to set limits on what their kids are playing and watching.
As long as Obama isn't specifically saying the Xbox 360 rots your mind or programs little Johnny to kill grandma, Microsoft has to love the attention. At least from a brand-extension point of view. After all, It's the president using their brand name, and doing so in a way that makes it synonymous with video gaming. Pretty powerful endorsement, albeit backhanded.

The first Microsoft retail stores will be ready to launch this fall, and boy, we can't wait to have a place where we can directly drop off our busted Xbox 360 and say, "You best fix this red-blinking demon box of manufacturing ineptitude!" We knew these brick-and-mortar shill shacks were coming back in February, but CNET is reporting that the first stores will open this fall, with some locations being opened right next to Apple stores.
Bless them, we wish Microsoft the best against Apple. We're totally going to spend one day counting the number of people bringing in a defective RRoD or E74 unit to be replaced.

This weekend the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation is hosting a talk about homophobia online and in games and Xbox Live's head of policy and enforcement will be on hand to hear what they have to say.
Stephen Toulouse is going top the talk at Electronic Arts as his team works to find a solution to Microsoft's current position on mentioning one's sexual orientation in a Gamertag or profile on Live. Right now it's not allowed, but Toulouse says that will change once they figure out the best way to implement that change.
"The overall policy we have today is that the expression of sexual orientation in a Gamertag or text field is not allowed," he told Kotaku today. "That doesn't matter what the orientation is."
Toulouse said the team felt that the policy was even handed in its treatment of the issue, but have since learned that some consider it unfair.
"We recognize that the policy is not just, that some communities feel like they are being targeted," he said. "Our challenge is how do that. We are working on that now."
When looking into the issue Toulouse's team found that 98 percent of the uses of the word "gay" on Live was pejorative.
The team is working now with GLAAD to best figure out how to resolve the issue in a way that allows people to identify themselves without allowing for something that could amount to hate speech.
"I don't know what shape or form it will take," Toulouse said, "but yes we will go back and figure out how to make it work."

July 18th, 2009, 23:00 Posted By: wraggster
It's official! Gears of War 2 developer Epic Games has confirmed via its forums that the "All Fronts" DLC set to release on July 28 was available on Xbox Live Marketplace by accident early this morning (or: late last night, for you owl-types). According to a posting on the company's forums, "The 'All Fronts' DLC was leaked for 800 MS points last night around 1AM (US Central). When users attempted to download it, they received an error message."
Interestingly, a number of folks have not only been able to download it but also play the new content. The forum member continues, writing, "Those who bought them right away are playing them RIGHT NOW -- if you attempt to download them now you will receive an error message ... those [of] you [who] received the first error before Microsoft was alerted can redownload them fine."
These statements appear to be confirmed by the flood of excited responses of people playing the game, as well as by statements from Epic's Community Manager "Flak," who explains, "This was a bug or mistake. The DLC is still scheduled for release on the 28th for 1,600 Microsoft points (All Fronts) and 1,200 Microsoft points (Dark Corners)." Unsurprisingly, Epic asks forums users not to upload any video or screenshots of the accidentally released DLC -- so, ya know, you'll probably be seeing it everywhere by noon today ...
Update: Microsoft has officially responded to the situation and released this statement:
"Earlier this morning, the "Gears of War 2: All Fronts Collection" Game Add-on was briefly made available on Xbox Live for 800 Microsoft Points. The content has since been removed and will launch on Tuesday, July 28th worldwide as planned, together with the "Dark Corners" Game Add-on. Pricing will remain as originally intended (1600 and 1200 Microsoft Points for "All Fronts Collection" and "Dark Corners," respectively). The small, lucky group of Xbox Live members who were able to download the content during the short window it was available will be able to retain the content for the price at which it was purchased as well as keep all related Achievements. There won't be any penalties for those who purchased this content early. Think of it as a lucky treat for those with quick reflexes!"
There you have it, folks! Enjoy!
