Team 17 studio director Martyn Brown has revealed that the total cost of developing the company's forthcoming Xbox Live Arcade trilogy of Alien Breed titles will hit around USD 2.5 million.
The company, which has enjoyed success in self-publishing with Worms and Worms 2 - both of which are currently sitting in the top ten of the XBLA chart - has employed a team of about 30 people over a period of "around 14-15 months," Brown told a packed Evolve session at this year's Develop Conference.
"It makes it one of the most expensive digital titles to-date," he admitted of the game, which will be released in three parts beginning in around October and feature around 15 hours of gameplay in total.
The title, a re-imagining of the classic Amiga game, was first shown to an audience at GameHorizon in Newcastle last month, and has been generating substantial with online audiences since then.
The first of a two-part interview with Martyn Brown, in which he discusses the difficulties facing new teams wanting to publish titles on digital platforms, will be available tomorrow.

While even bigwigs can fudge release numbers from time to time, the word "imminently" just carries a certain aura. Speaking with The Telegraph, executive producer of MSN Peter Bale confessed that Microsoft was "looking at launching a music streaming service imminently." As in, maybe before the dawn of August. Bale added that it would be "a similar principle to Spotify," but the outfit is still examining exactly how the business model would work. It's expected that the service would let users stream tunes for free so long as they listen to ads every half hour or so, but for those with too little time and too many jams, there could be a paid option that strips the plugs. What's unclear now, however, is exactly how this initiative will tie-in with the company's Xbox 360 and Zune. There's no doubt that Microsoft is aiming to make the former an all-encompassing multimedia box, but we're sure it'd rather not convolute things with Zune Pass all the same.

It never stops: 3D Realms has released a handful of new Duke Nukem Forever images on its Facebook, despite the fact it's now dead in the water.
All sorts of lawsuit wrangling is going on the moment, with publisher Take-Two fighting to get an Xbox 360 version of the game released by another developer, and even revelations that there's another, non-DNF in the works.
We've got a feeling this won't be the last of this.

A Microsoft patent has revealed a camera system for an unnamed third-person shooter, possibly in development for the Xbox 360 Natal.
The filing, spotted by Skoar, describes 'exploring' and combat camera mechanics and even makes mention of Xbox 1 game Brute Force.
It reads: "In a third-person shooter video game, the viewing perspective is smoothly transitioned between an 'explorer' viewpoint and a 'ready' viewpoint as game conditions change. In the 'explorer' viewpoint, scenes are depicted from a camera positioned behind and removed from a character.
"The explorer viewpoint offers a wide angle of view of the surrounding combat area, enabling the game player to scout the terrain. In the 'ready' viewpoint, scenes are depicted from the camera as it is repositioned close to the character. The ready viewpoint provides a narrower angle of view to facilitate better aiming when the character is engaged in armed combat. The transition between the explorer and ready viewpoints tracks a non-linear path.
"A technique for controlling camera viewpoints in a third-person shooter video game is described. Scenes are depicted from a camera positioned behind and removed from a character that is being controlled by a player. As conditions change during the game, the camera is moved smoothly along a non-linear path between an 'explorer' viewpoint and a 'ready' viewpoint.
"In the 'explorer' viewpoint, the camera is farther removed from the character to provide a wider angle of view of the battle terrain as the character moves about. In the "ready" viewpoint, the camera resides just behind the character to facilitate better aiming when the character is engaged in combat.
"Selection of a camera viewpoint and timely movement between the two viewpoints are controlled to facilitate a more intimate feel with the character and to avoid having obstacles obscure vision of the character and/or reticle used to sight targets."
Make of that what you will.

Prestige Edition to include real set of night vision goggles; original COD heading to XBL and PSN
Forget postcards, leather cases and flimsy plastic figures – Infinity Ward has showed everyone else how Collector’s Editions should be done with the revelation that the Prestige Edition of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will include a set of real night vision goggles.
Described as ‘fully-functioning’, the goggles are also joined with a more regular assortment of trinkets – namely an art book, steel case and sculpted head model.
Also included is a code to download the original Call of Duty on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network – the first time the previously PC-only release has appeared on consoles.
The game is out in November, but there’s no price yet for the Prestige Pack.

Microsoft to launch Spotify rival later this month, hints to Xbox 360 service
Microsoft has revealed it will be launching a music streaming service this month that could appear on Xbox 360.
The company claims the service should be ready by the end of July and will be akin to Spotify, allowing users to stream music for free or purchase downloadable tracks.
Speaking to The Telegraph, MSN’s executive producer Peter Bale hinted that this new initiative may be linked to Xbox 360, but did not offer any details on how it would work.
“Music is an important area for Microsoft,” said Bale. “We are looking at launching a music streaming service imminently. It will be a similar principle to Spotify, but we are still examining how the business model will work.
“We are looking at how other similar businesses have structured their business models and trying to figure out what will work best for both consumer and Microsoft.”
A Microsoft-owned music streaming service complements the platform holder’s strategy to make the Xbox 360 the leading “entertainment hub” in consumers’ homes. The company recently announced a similar initiative at E3 when it unveiled a new partnership with Last.FM.

News via XS
We received exclusive pictures of an Xbox 360 development kit with 1GB of RAM (as opposed to the 512MB found into retail consoles and dev kits until now). It was already rumoured/announced a while ago that new development kits would get 1GB of RAM to give developers more flexibility and use all the power of retail Xbox360s while still running debug tools. Today we offer you the first pictures of this 'new' device.
While most might expect the extra RAM would just be higher capacity chips on the motherboard, it's not. The extra 512MB comes in the new sidecar. The sidecar is the addon device for dev kits you've probably seen before used for dvd emulation and pix ports.
What you can see on the pictures below is just the 512MB-addon taken from inside the new devkit sidecar and modified/wired to be connected as standalone to a dev kit without the rest of the sidecar.
The dev kit itself is an XNA prototype with jasper-based motherboard and because it has been modified to work with the 512MB-addon without the rest of the sidecar we'll dub it 'Frankie the 1GB XNA'

Xbox Live's "Deal of the Week" has been pretty solid lately as evidenced by its latest offering: Ikaruga for a paltry 400 ($5)!
The polarity flipping shmup is considered to be the thinking man's entry into the "blast everything" genre. This is about as good as an arcade deal gets, and with the prices of this year's "Summer of Arcade," we'll take all the savings we're granted

The launch of Battlefield 1943, while problematic in terms of server performance, has still proven hugely popular with gamers, with over 5 million kills having taken place in its first day online.
The game, the latest in the shooter franchise from EA DICE, was originally launched on July 8 but demand for online games crippled the servers just 24 hours into the title's life.
But following the introduction of additional servers the game's performance increased, allowing more games to be played.
According to DICE's Gordon Van Dyke almost 30 years of gameplay had already been completed by midday on Sunday July 12 - inside of four days online - on the Xbox 360 platform alone.
The title, also available on the PlayStation Network, costs GBP 9.99 for the PlayStation 3 and 1200 MS points (GBP 10.20) on Xbox Live.

We'll admit, that cheap-o Virtual On mod we peeked earlier this year was pretty stellar, but those obsessed with the anime-themed title are likely tired of using a hacked up Xbox 360 gamepad in order to advance from stage to stage. If you've found yourself in that increasingly narrow niche, HORI has a fine piece you should feast your eyes upon. The refreshed TwinStick EX was designed specifically for Microsoft's latest console and to be used specially with Virtual On. The result? A ¥30,000 ($325) joystick that you'll probably never quite justify the purchase of to your significant other. Get your pre-orders in early; we get the feeling these are bound to sell out.

An anonymous reader writes
"Chris Wilson reviews Kodu, the new XBox game that he calls 'Logo on Steroids.' The game allows you to build a world and program every object in it with an in-house graphical language, making the game a primitive example of 'reactive state machines' in a 'multi-agent concurrent system.' It sounds like what we call 'application specific integrated circuits' in engineering, where every line of code runs in parallel.

Clamoring for even the tiniest morsel of Zune HD news? This might just do the trick. Xbox 360 Program Manager "Fitret" has posted on Twitter a pic of his new Tegra-infused portable that happens to show a glimpse of the marketplace section, specifically an artist sub-menu for The Hold Steady. Like we said it isn't much, but it is a mighty attractive design, and certainly a menu we haven't played with yet. Now how about a firm release date and price, eh Steve?

UK regional Xbox director Neil Thompson feels parents still fail to grasp that modern consoles aren't "toys." Thompson, who is also a member of ELSPA, explained to MCV that "every responsible member of the video game industry" needs to play an active role in keeping the education process "front of mind." He is speaking specifically about letting parents know that each console has content filters and other specialized tools for them.
So, sit down this weekend with a clueless parent (obviously, that wouldn't be a parent who reads this site) and educate them on responsible console ownership with children. Or, if you'd like to be more passive aggressive, send them the link to the ESRB's resource page on how to set up parental features.

You're more likely to see Xbox Live and PSN get a sequel of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All Stars than a port of the original, says a Capcom producer.
That's because "the game is optimized for the Wii system, especially the graphics features," Capcom's Ryota Niitsuma told VideoGamer.com. "So if we were to port it to PS3 or Xbox 360 we would have to make the game from scratch, and in that case we might as well just make a sequel of the series on those consoles rather than porting it."
Note: That does not confirm either that a sequel is being made, or that anything in the franchise is being made for XBLA or PSN. Niitsuma's just sayin'. "Currently, no," is the answer to "will TvC be released on 360 or PS3." But, "We would like to see the reaction of the western market when we release the game on Wii."
Ah, yes, so that places 360 and PS3 gamers in the position of needing Wii gamers - to shell out in large numbers once Tatsunoko vs. Capcom releases in the winter. At least, those who have any hope of seeing this game on their console down the line.
Capcom: No plans for Tatsunoko vs. Capcom XBLA/PSN port

Microsoft has refused to rule out the introduction of a pay-to-play model in the future for 1 Vs 100, the massively multiplayer online quiz game for Xbox 360 which launched in the UK today.
The game is currently free-to-play for all Xbox Live Gold subscribers for the duration of the first season, where gamers can compete in scheduled live shows and win real prizes.
"Our beta season is to see the interest in the game and the success of the game," Xbox Live marketing manager Tania Chee told GamesIndustry.biz, speaking in London yesterday at an event to mark the game's launch.
"In the beta season 1 it will be free for our Gold subscribers; moving forwards we have nothing to announce at this time. We ultimately hope it will be a resounding success so we can move forward into future seasons."
Asked whether Microsoft was specifically looking at introducing a subscription model, Chee said: "I don't know what's going to happen to be honest. It's a test for us to prove the platform will be a success."
1 Vs 100 is adapted from Endemol's successful TV format, and a live show will run on Xbox Live for the duration of the season every Friday and Saturday from 7:30pm-9:30pm BST. The UK version is hosted by James McCourt, with the first show airing this evening.
Yesterday's UK press launch, where invited journalists took part in a live game, was hosted by broadcaster Pat Sharp and the twins Martina and Melanie Grant, who became famous in the '90s as the faces – and hair - of ITV children's game show Fun House.

Successful Wii Fit rival EA Sports Active is seemingly in the early stages of being ported from Nintendo’s machine to both Xbox 360 and PS3 thanks to the recent unveiling of both Microsoft’s Project Natal and Sony’s Motion Controller Prototype.
“Both companies are obviously great partners and they've shared their plans with us well in advance so it was no surprise to us,” Peter Moore told IndustryGamers.
“You could fully comprehend the excitement of sports when thinking about these technologies.
“Both companies came to us, asking 'what are your ideas for this?'.
"Anything where you're moving around in sports, and particularly the fitness element of what we're doing certainly ties well into what both Sony and Microsoft are trying to do now in taking a little bit of the action that Nintendo's clearly had for themselves so far.
“I think there's already a lot of learnings we have right now with our Wii products and certainly there's stuff with EA Sports Active that we could apply to both platforms. Fitness is a huge play for us and will continue to be a huge play for us, and this just makes the opportunity bigger, to say the least.”
