Though it's been quite some time since we last heard anything about a portable gaming device from Microsoft, corporate VP Shane Kim recently reconfirmed to Kikizo that the company is still very interested in the idea. "We're building a service in Live that will... will extend to other platforms ... no question about it," Kim told them in an interview earlier this week.
He stresses that, with development for Project Natal underway, Microsoft isn't exactly ponying up for extra resources to make portable Xbox gaming a reality. "If we chased after a mobile or handheld opportunity, we would not have the resources and ability to do things like ... Project Natal." Surprisingly, Kim even touches on the always touchy (and often not even mentioned) Live Anywhere initiative, saying, "We talked about Live Anywhere a few years ago ... Live is the connective tissue." From the sounds of things, though Microsoft may very well be thinking about the idea of a gaming handheld in the future, it's not exactly right around the corner.

Microsoft has reportedly drastically reduced the amount of indie titles it's going to allow on its Live Arcade service — but no such limits have been placed on material from major publishers. Have the publishers themselves been pushing this agenda? And what will it mean for indies? Quoting: 'More and more indie developers are being created, bucking the trend of working for the blockbuster-sized titles of many publishers and opting to control their own development and keep their IPs. This is likely becoming more and more of a concern to major publishers, who seem — especially in ZeniMax's recent purchase of id Software and EA's combination of Bioware and Mythic, as well as Warner Bros. purchase of Midway's IPs and studios — to be doing everything they can to consolidate their power and lock down all the available resources.' When questioned, Microsoft released a statement saying that they're 'a great supporter of independent game development.'

17 million of Xbox Live's 20 million active users have downloaded content through the online service, according to statistics released by Microsoft this week.
Although "content" isn't clarified, and includes videos and other non-game releases, the stat still gives an indication of the growing significance of downloadable items.
"Xbox Live data is kind of this untold phenomenon," Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg told Gamasutra in an interview hosting the data.
He added that paid downloads were up 73 per cent across the 12 months to the start of July, and said that "significantly outpaces what we saw in growth for console sales or software sales".
Microsoft has made a big play for downloadable exclusives as Xbox Live has grown, waving its chequebook around to secure downloadable Grand Theft Auto IV episodes and first dibs on Fallout 3 DLC.
At E3 it announced that the first two Modern Warfare 2 map packs would be timed exclusives on its system. It has also secured the Beatles song "All You Need Is Love" as exclusive Beatles: Rock Band DLC, with all proceeds going to charity.
Sony's competing PlayStation Network service for PS3 and PSP has 25 million registered users, the platform holder has said, and enjoys downloadable success of its own, including seven million downloads for PlayStation Home.

Activision has confirmed that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will arrive this autumn with a suggested retail price of GBP 54.99, as a weak pound and record development costs take their toll. Their toll of GBP 54.99, to be specific.
Other publishers are expected to follow suit, claims MCV. A quick look around the retail-sphere and one spies EA adopting the new pricing with Need for Speed: Shift.
"You can't continue to trade as normal when the biggest territory in Europe has seen cost of goods increase by 30 per cent due to the strengthening of the Euro. Publishers somehow need to offset this drastic increase in costs," commented THQ's publishing boss Ian Curran.
Nintendo addressed the issue in March by pushing the price of the Wii to 199.99 - a price hike of around 20 quid.
The problem comes, however, if and when the pound returns to strength. Do those already established trade prices then drop?

While the spotlight over the past few months has very much been on Microsoft's home hardware and the possibilities of Project Natal, the company hasn't forgotten about the portable online market, or on previously announced project Live Anywhere, according to Microsoft vice president Shane Kim.
"We've chosen to focus on the living room experience from a hardware standpoint, if you will, but we're building a service in Live that will extend to other platforms. No question about it," Kim revealed in an interview with Kikizo.
"For us, it's a matter of focusing on 'when', because if we chased after a mobile or handheld opportunity, we would not have the resources and ability to do things like Project Natal."
Microsoft understands, says Kim, that customers don't want "an island experience" - they want to be connected to the rest of their lives. "We talked about Live Anywhere a few years ago," the exec said. "Live is like the connective tissue."
It's something that users are starting to see now, says Kim, as the company integrates services such as Netflix, Facebook and Twitter into the Xbox Live experience.
But it is searching for the best opportunity into the portable space too, Kim confirmed, in a way that will fit with the Xbox brand.
"The question will be, how do we enter into that market? Do we do our own device, do we create our own phone? That's a question for the company itself. Do we continue to go down the Windows Mobile path which is that path that we're on today, etcetera, etcetera.
"But believe me, we understand the importance of that device in people's lives," he concluded.

Rare's head of animation, Louise Ridgeway, has claimed that the New Xbox Experience - specifically the avatars - have "changed the face" of Microsoft's gaming platform.
Speaking to VG247 at Develop this week she played up the impact that the characters - designed by Rare - have had on the accessibility of the console.
"I really think that we've kind of changed the face of the Xbox," she said. "It's gone from something that was always perceived as a hardcore gamer's console.
"I mean, I really like games. I like Resident Evil, I like Street Fighter, I like the typical boys games, but when I boot up the Xbox 360 and my daughter gets on there to play Street Fighter - she’s really good as Ken - I’m feel really proud of the fact that she can join in.
"It's just that little bit more inviting, you know, and I think it broadens it to a whole new demographic of people. It's a really great console, and there's so many great things on it to play that everybody should be involved," she added.
Rare, part of Microsoft Game Studios, is now being overseen by Lionhead founder Peter Molyneux as part of the latter's promotion announced at E3.

Microsoft has revealed that paid downloads have increased 73 per cent year-over-year for the first half of 2009, and boasts an active user base of 20 million people on Xbox Live.
The information, released in reaction to the NPD Group's official US sales results for June of 2009, also noted the year-on-year growth in Xbox 360 console sales.
As previously reported, Xbox 360 console sales clocked in at 241,000 units for June of 2009, a 20 per cent increase from the same period in 2008. Year-to-date, it remains the only home console to show growth in 2009, though Nintendo's DS portable console has also seen a sales increase.
The company also revealed that third-party software sales totaled USD 168 million in June, claiming that this figure is higher than those of the PlayStation 3 and Wii.

GamesIndustry.biz can reveal that HMV has negotiated the exclusive UK rights to sell the premium edition of the hugely-anticipated shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - the bundle which will famously include functional night vision goggles.
The game, which will be released on November 10, will see the Prestige Edition sell for GBP 119.99 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 formats, with HMV's online pre-order option available now.
"This is a fantastic limited edition exclusive for hmv.com customers for what is, undoubtedly, the game of the year," said Jonathan Hayes, HMV commercial manager. "We're absolutely delighted that we can help make such a special premium product available to fans of the Modern Warfare franchise.
"We've been working very closely with Activision to make Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 one of the biggest entertainment events of all time. With this great exclusive and the upcoming launch we hope that everybody gets to play this brilliant game."
Modern Warfare 2 is widely-tipped to be the biggest entertainment launch of this year, and HMV is planning to arrange a number of in-store events to support the launch - with details available in due course.
"We've seen significant pre-order activity around this release and heightened interest in all things Modern Warfare 2 - both in-store and online, which supports our growing conviction that this will be one of the most eagerly anticipated releases ever," said Tim Ellis, head of games, previously told GamesIndustry.biz.
As well as the goggles, which are fully functional and allow the wearer to see in absolute darkness for up to 50 feet, the Prestige Edition will also include:
A token which will allow the download to console of the original Call of Duty.
An individually-numbered and engraved collector's bust, inspired by the Captain 'Soap' MacTavish's in-game model, which will hold the goggles when not in use.
A premium, special-edition SteelBook case with custom artwork by Infinity Ward.
A hardbound art book, Behind the Lines designed by the artists at Infinity Ward, featuring the art of Modern Warfare 2.
"We're really proud to be working with Activision and Infinity Ward to bring the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - Prestige Edition to the UK market," added the retailer's senior games buyer, Toby Burton. "This product will be exclusive to HMV and represents the pinnacle of gaming special editions.
"Modern Warfare is my favourite game of the last five years, so I'm ecstatic that we've secured this true gamer's edition for HMV. What more needs to be said than: 'Night Vision Goggles'?!"

Highlight features include support for Games on Demand (coming in August), a slew of Netflix updates including the ability to browse the library and manage your queue, the long-awaited Movie Party system that allows Gold members to share a flick in a virtual theater, and a ton of other little tweaks like user ratings, avatar enhancements, friends list sorting, and a streamlined Party invite system. Independent artists will be able to use the XNA Creator's Club to produce the Rock Band note-charts for their music and sell them in game later this year. Bands will use their original song masters and generate a MIDI file that produces the game 'gems' to which players can follow along. Tracks must pass a review process with other XNA members, and then a final approval from MTV Games. Songs will be sold for between 50 cents and $3, with the artist getting a 30% cut after MTV and Microsoft take their cut. The best tracks will also make their way to the Wii and PS3 after a 30-day exclusive period.

In a new interview, BioShock creator Ken Levine has been talking about his studio's philosophy and teasing, at least abstractly, his next project, of which he says 'we had a scope and ambition in mind which is more ambitious than anything we've ever done. Even more, substantially more ambitious than BioShock.' He also commented on 2K Marin, currently working on BioShock 2, wishing them luck but making it clear that he is not majorly involved in the game: 'I'm not working on BioShock 2. I make no claim to anything on BioShock 2, and I think it's important that that's their product, and their culture. Because you can't just clone a studio

Aaron Greenberg says distraction of HD discs forced Sony to forget about core audience importance
Xbox 360 group product manager Aaron Greenberg has stated that Sony’s insistence on selling PS3 on its credentials as a Blu-ray player as much as a games console has knocked the firm off track, allowing Xbox 360 to maintain its momentum.
“We started in the inner circle, and we'll continue to deliver those core experiences – going after them first was important,” he told Gamasutra.
“I think for Sony, what in many ways kind of threw them off that strategy was what happened with the PS2 and the DVD player phenomenon. They kind of expected that to happen with the PS3 and the Blu-ray.”

The newest Xbox live update is in the process of filtering out to the masses, and it brings with it some pretty sweet features. It'll offer downloadable Games on Demand (full games!), new Netflix options and a bunch more.
Games on Demand looks pretty great; you'll be able to download full games, including manuals, and you'll have access to them forever, meaning free re-downloads in case you delete them. The new Netflix options include "movie parties" that sound sort of awkward, wherein you and a bunch of other avatars sit around and share digital popcorn (we are not making this up, see the press release below). But it'll also give you more control over your Instant Watch queue and supposedly give you smooth playback even with a finicky Internet connection. No luck yet on the Facebook, Twitter, Last.fm, or Zune video additions we were promised at E3.
A warning: This is rolling out in waves, with a select preview first. Games on Demand won't be available until early August, and even that's only in the preview. We don't have an exact date for the wide release, though it'll almost certainly be in late summer. Check out the presser below for more details.
What does this Xbox LIVE Update include?
Netflix Updates
Now you can watch movies with your friends no matter where they are and manage your queue from the comfort of your couch.
· Movie Parties – Xbox LIVE Gold members can sit together in a virtual theater with up to seven friends no matter where they are while your Avatars watch a movie, flirt or even throw popcorn at each other.
· Manage Your Queue – Browse the Netflix Instant Watch video catalogue, choose from the most popular movies and genres and add to your queue all from the comfort of your couch – no computer required.
· Enhanced Playback Experience – Enjoy a smooth viewing experience when your internet bandwidth fluctuates.
· Friends Info – Richer information is now displayed in the Friends channel and in the Guide showing what you and your friends are doing.
Avatar Marketplace
Express yourself! Deck your Avatar out with the latest clothing and props from the top brands and game franchises.
· Clothing – Download premium items, including branded apparel from your favorite fashion labels and Xbox 360 games such as "Halo."
· Props – You can now equip your avatar with animated items they can carry around and interact with.
· Awardables – The ability to earn Avatar clothing and props as rewards within games has been added. Please stay tuned for an update on supporting titles.
Games on Demand— Please note that Games on Demand will be available in the preview beginning early August.
Enjoy 24 x 7 access to a growing online library of popular full game titles on Xbox LIVE whenever you want them, in the comfort of your living room.
· Purchase Options – Browse and download a great selection of full Xbox 360 games using Microsoft Points, direct debit, or credit card.
· Game Manuals – Game manuals for Games on Demand titles can be viewed, downloaded or printed on Xbox.com.
· It's Yours Forever! – As with other Xbox LIVE content, Games on Demand titles are linked to your Xbox LIVE account, so you can delete and re-download anything you have already purchased to the same console or another console.
User Ratings
User ratings help you find games that other people think are awesome!
· Rate it – You can now rate every game on the Xbox LIVE Games Marketplace using a 5-star system.

Video Display Options
We've made it easier for you to see your entertainment in the highest resolution possible on your TV using an HDMI connection.

· Achievements Tracking – A new view inside the profile panel which includes a summary of Achievements earned across all the games played, and shows of all your completed games.

A new ESRB listing reveals that the game Command & Conquer Red Alert 3: Commander's Challenge will be heading to both the Playstation 3 and XBox 360. But wait, EA hasn't even officially announced this!
The listing describes the game as "a real-time strategy game (RTS) in which players control different factions vying for global supremacy in the wake of global war and occupation." The game also features various unit dialogue expletives, such as "hell," and "bastard" and "blood spray" when units are hit during combat.
As Shacknews points out, Commander's Challenge was originally a mode in the downloadable "Uprising" expansion released for Red Alert 3 for PC.
It's unclear whether or not this will be a full retail game or perhaps a download-only title.
When asked to comment, EA said they have "no details at this time."

Speaking with VG247 at the Develop Conference in Brighton, UK, EndWar development boss Michael de Plater said that he thinks Microsoft's Project Natal could reinvigorate the console (and PC?) RTS market. Comparing Natal's potential "power" and "precision" to menu scrolling in the film Minority Report, Plater anticipates Natal's combination of voice and gesture control to potentially be "really powerful and immersive."
During E3 2009, Ubisoft showcased the upcoming RTS RUSE on Microsoft's touch-screen-enhanced Surface table. While Plater knows the $12,000 home furnishing isn't going to be a regular household accessory, Project Natal has the potential to work with software in a similar fashion. "If the technology works -- so you could translate the interface they've already got working really well on RUSE into Natal -- it could work very, very well."
Hopefully Microsoft will reveal when Natal is hitting stores and what the device's final price will be soon and Joystiq won't have to put so much money into developing its own set of drug-addicted "precogs."

Entitled "Homophobia in Virtual Communities," a new panel, initiated by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and hosted at EA's Redwood City headquarters, will delve into methods of combating hateful language and discriminatory behavior encountered and propagated by online game players. According to Gamasutra, those contributing to the discussion this Saturday, July 18th, will include GayGamer founder Flynn de Marco, Maxis senior producer Caryl Shaw, and Stephen Toulouse, program manager and virtual bouncer for Xbox Live.
Those with clear recollections or inexplicable mastery of our terrible in-site search will recognize Toulouse as one of the voices heard in a recent debate regarding Xbox Live's GLBT policies. Unless you're under the impression that GLBT is a kind of sandwich, it may be worth your while to gain further details on the panel over at the GLAAD website.

David Rutter, producer of FIFA for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, has put his foot down, literally. He's not moving it. At least, he's not moving it to play a 75-minute soccer match in his living room. When asked about the prospect of future FIFAs incorporating motion controls by utilizing Project Natal and Sony's motion wand, Rutter told VideoGamer.com, "There are a few things we can do, definitely, but we've not really started on it yet." Those few things do not include reinventing the franchise with unintuitive hand and body motions. "If it doesn't add to the overall thing, then it's pointless. I don't want it to be just this distraction, to be quite honest."
While FIFA might be the exception in an otherwise motion-inspired EA Sports business, we're sure all the head-nodding, inbounds wrist-flicking minigames you could imagine will be considered -- or worse, ported to FIFA 11. The trick, it seems, would be to perfect the motion caption technology: "Kick from the couch in all-new Energy Saver Mode!

It seems that user-generated content has usurped co-op as the hot new "gotta have it" feature. Lego Indiana Jones has found a way to bridge the gap between the two features (impressive, considering his stubby legs), allowing two players to create levels simultaneously (a la LittleBigPlanet) in his upcoming sequel, subtitled The Adventure Continues. Good news: The feature will appear on Wii as well as 360 and PS3. Bad news: They won't be sharable on any console, which just seems silly.
Our man Jem Alexander reports from the Develop conference that you'll be able to create levels by playing, similar to what we saw in Modnation Racers during E3. We have no clue how that'll work, but we'd let Mola Ram tear our hearts out to learn more
