After a few attempts to cool rising speculation surrounding a new Xbox 360 SKU, Microsoft has turned to its CEO, Steve Ballmer – the very individual who provoked the rumours – to adequately close the debate.
Last week the idiosyncratic Microsoft boss reportedly claimed that a ‘new’ Xbox 360 is due to arrive in 2010 along with the release of Project Natal. Microsoft representatives have since cast doubt on such a plan, but – visibly – such comments were not definitive enough to settle the growing rumours.
With Microsoft unable to dissolve the buzz, the company’s CEO has released a statement to IGN:
“There is no news in my comments. Things are as reported after E3. Sorry.”
Ballmer confirmed that his comments last week were more accidental and unintended than they appeared. “I confused the issue with my poorly chosen words,” he said.
Project Natal remains without an official launch date.

t's not news that the media you buy for both Kindle and Zune are protected by DRM. Readers are sending in stories of some of the ramifications of that fact. First, Absentminded-Artist notes an account at Gear Diary recounting what an Amazon rep told one user about download limits on Kindle books.
"One facet of the Kindle's DRM has reared an ugly head: download limitations. Upgraded your iPhone recently? Bought a new Kindle? You may not be able to reload your entire library. There's an unadvertised flag: 'You mean when you go to buy the book it doesn't say "this book can be downloaded this number of times" even though that limitation is there?' To which [the rep] replied, 'No, I'm very sorry it doesn't.'"
Next, reader Rjak writes
"DRM is a bad idea, poorly implemented. One of the many many valid reasons to drop Zune and it's marketplace is the DRM validation error you see below. The vast majority of the music I had purchased last year is completely gone. There's no refund, the music doesn't exist on the service anymore, the files are just garbage now. Here's the error (screen capture): 'This item is no longer available at Zune Marketplace. Because of this, you can no longer play it or sync it with your Zune. There might be another iteration of it available in Zune Marketplace.

It appears as though Microsoft's plans for an August launch of its Games on Demand service is popping up a bit early. Why just this morning, we spotted a listing for the already confirmed Mass Effect (sporting its snazzy new Platinum Hits packaging) in our Xbox.com Marketplace RSS feed. Unsurprisingly, the listing has been removed from the website itself, though RSS feeds won't allow for editing after something has been published.
As 360sync.com rightfully points out, game manuals will be provided virtually through the Xbox.com Marketplace website according to the listing, so you've got that going for ya (which is nice). We're not sure when these puppies are showin' up on XBL for sure, but from the looks of things, we'd say sooner rather than later. For a video tour of the upcoming Games on Demand service, hit the break

You can stop wondering what exactly is powering the new Zune HD. On the official Zune Insider podcast, host Matt Akers confirmed the rumors: yep, it's rocking a Tegra. No surprise, that announcement came with a heap of praise for NVIDIA's chip, so much so it's almost painful to listen. "So sick, so much better battery life, graphics acceleration. This thing is like a mini laptop in your hand, right, it's so awesome." We'll have to see about that for ourselves (in September, maybe?), but we are indeed encouraged by the news.

Garou: Mark of the Wolves comes out on Xbox Live Arcade this summer. Garou was announced with a slew of other SNK developed XBLA games like The King of Fighters: Sky Stage, which doesn’t even have a release date.
Metal Slug 7 was previously announced as an Xbox Live Arcade game, but it was missing from the list. So, I inquired about it. Robert Macchiaverna, Acquisitions Manager at Ignition Entertainment, explained “It is still happening, but I believe that’s scheduled to be a 2010 title.” Ignition published Metal Slug 7 on the DS (pictured) in North America and has a close relationship with SNK. “Ultimate Match ['98] is coming out this year, but Metal Slug is not,” Macchiaverna continued.
Just one more year. Maybe a two-thirds of year until co-op Slug Gigant action.

Now that the third-party playing field is supposedly "level," Microsoft looks to be making a play for the advantage, as Ubisoft continues to insist that Splinter Cell Conviction is "a true Microsoft exclusive title." We've heard this before, of course, but this time it's with more *ahem* conviction, as an Ubisoft UK Forum Manager declares there are "no plans to have Splinter Cell Conviction on other [console] platforms." The sentiment echoes the long drama surrounding Metal Gear Solid 4's exclusivity, and we have to imagine doubts about Conviction's exclusivity won't go down quietly, either.
Just as Metal Gear Solid has been associated with PlayStation (though not always exclusive to Sony platforms), Ubisoft calls Splinter Cell and Microsoft "historically linked," explaining that Conviction's exclusivity is based, in part, on "a 'link of heart.'" Aw, that's sweet -- and so is the check that Microsoft must have cut.

We've heard a number of rumors claiming Mr. Clifford B. was preparing to eschew his chainsawgun-heavy namesake in favor of one more spooky. However, these rumors were recently crushed between Bleszinski's manly, well-maintained jaws during an interview with OXM, in which he explains he's "not making a horror game next," because, well, "Gears is very much near and dear" to him.
While news that Bleszinski's next project won't contain ammo conservation or purposefully poor lighting may seem like the biggest news to come out of the interview, the real sizzler arises three questions later, when Bleszinski proudly admits, "I'm a giant douchebag." (No, we're not making that up. Promise!)

EA DICE producer Gordon Van Dyke has said a trial version of Battlefield 1943 will be offered to compensate for the lack of a public beta - an inevitability on Xbox Live Arcade, but not always so on PlayStation Network. So that's good news.
"No beta, but we have a trial version that lets you confirm what you already thought - that this game is the best USD 15 I will ever spend!" Van Dyke told Eurogamer readers during a Live Text Q&A.
He wouldn't budge on the "summer" date for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network versions of Battlefield 1943, but the overseeing PR announced that the PC version will arrive later, in September.
Battlefield 1943 re-imagines Battlefield 1942, and trims the classes and maps down to three to promote accessibility. A fourth map, Coral Sea, will be unlocked after a combined 43 million kills by XBLA players for that version and PSN players for that. Van Dyke reckons this will take about two weeks. The PR, however, reminded us that this is in your hands.
There are no "concrete plans" for future content, producer Patrick Liu added, and the unlockable nature of Coral Sea was a "spontaneous" idea.
Battlefield 1943, unlike the expansive key instalments in the series, will tend towards arcade and cartoon-style action over realism. Suicide jeeps laden with explosives can be jimmied into choke points, for example, and pilots can drop bombs on other planes. Snipers can even pick off targets while parachuting, before plunging a knife into someone upon landing.
Squads can be created both before a game and during, and simple attack/defend orders given. Voice chat between squads is supported but, in Battlefield 1943, clans are not.
EA DICE is also working on Battlefield 3, but wouldn't offer any further details.
Battlefield 1943 costs 1200 Microsoft Points (GBP 10.20 / EUR 14.40) from Xbox Live Arcade, and USD 15 (GBP 9) from the PlayStation Store - although the actual pound-price is likely to be higher.

June 19th, 2009, 21:08 Posted By: wraggster
Capcom has announced that it plans to update the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade versions of Bionic Commando Rearmed in response to feedback.
Judging by the change-list, said feedback mostly consisted of "where are the sodding Trophies" and "this is too hard you unimaginable bastards".
According to the Capcom Unity blog, Trophies will be added on PSN, and Easy and Normal difficulty levels have been rejigged quite a bit.
Now when you die, for example, you respawn at the last solid ground you stood on, or at the last checkpoint. "Say it with me now.... 'Unlimited Lives'," says the blog.
You'll also be able to reel out your grapple arm line if you latch onto something and realise the line is too short, and if you swing into a wall you no longer bounce off it and fall to your death - you just bounce and then reel in.
There are also a couple of bug-fixes, and Capcom's quick to note that the Hard and Super Hard difficulty levels remain untouched.
There's no word on an update for the PC version, or indeed when the above patch will be released, but the Capcom Unity wording suggests a free "title update" rather than a premium downloadable content pack.

June 19th, 2009, 21:06 Posted By: wraggster
Capcom has announced that Monumental Games' new MotoGP title is called MotoGP 09/10. Bit presumptuous.
It's due out next March on PS3 and Xbox 360 and features all the bikes, riders and tracks from the 2009 championship, with the promise of free data updates as the 2010 championship unfolds.
The Career mode is going to have races, obviously, but also management elements, so you can hire and fire engineers, team managers and press officers.
Beyond that Capcom is promising three other gameplay modes, one of which, Arcade, sets challenges along the way that encourage players to earn and steal points from one another. Capcom's press release also mentions "rewards" for riding style as well as race wins.
"Historically MotoGP videogames have been released toward the end of the GP season, but with this latest addition to the series we wanted MotoGP and racing fans to have the most up to date content as soon as possible," said Capcom's Michael Pattison.
Screenshots and videos were not immediately available but they'll probably have lots of leather and cogs in them and go vrrrrneeeerrrrroooooommmmm, if not wake you up at 8am on Saturday.

June 19th, 2009, 20:55 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft's Steve Ballmer has suggested that a new Xbox 360 will be released in 2010, implying it will incorporate the Project Natal technology as standard.
However, gaming execs at Microsoft were quick to react to Ballmer's statements, indicating that not all senior staff are on message at the company.
Speaking at the Executive's Club of Chicago, Ballmer said the console will have a "natural interface" and built-in camera with the ability to recognise movement and voice, according to TG Daily.
While clearly talking about the Project Natal technology, it's the first time – despite industry speculation – that Microsoft has indicated the motion tech will be built-in to Xbox 360 hardware.
Xbox Live's Larry Hyrb was quick to play down the suggestions by Ballmer, writing on his blog: "As the Xbox team stated at E3 two weeks ago, we are not even halfway through the current console generation lifecycle and believe Xbox 360 will be the entertainment center in the home for long into the next decade.
"Project Natal will be an important part of this platform, but we have not confirmed a launch date at this time."
Earlier this week Aaron Greenberg also dismissed rumours of a hardware redesign in 2010, stating that "Natal will run on Xbox 360 so no new console investment will be necessary."
Shane Kim told GamesIndustry.biz that Project Natal would not launch this year, and no release window has yet been set, whether as a stand alone peripheral, bundled with the 360 or built in to new hardware.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer spoke at the Executive's Club of Chicago today, informing attendees that a new Xbox 360 will arrive in 2010, one equipped with a "natural interface" and built-in camera. Sound familiar?
Either Ballmer has been reading 1UP, who recently ran a rumor that Microsoft would be re-launching the Xbox 360 next year with its Project Natal tech built into the device, or he's the CEO of Microsoft for chrissakes.
According to TG Daily's recount of Ballmer's talk, in which he discussed "the role of innovation in changing economic times," the executive made mention of the new Xbox 360 configuration, one that Microsoft hasn't exactly denied.
It makes a great deal of sense to bundle the tech with the stock Xbox 360, as peripheral support for the Natal-powered version of the box would ensure greater support. And Microsoft's Shane Kim recently told Kotaku that the size of the launch of Natal would be on par with a new generation console launch.
Clearly, Microsoft also has designs on launching a version of its motion and depth-sensing camera as a peripheral, so current Xbox 360 owners don't have to upgrade to an all new box. 1UP's story on the "Xbox Natal" indicated that the device would also see a hardware spec boost, but it appears Ballmer didn't drop details on that.

June 18th, 2009, 22:07 Posted By: wraggster
It’s been revealed today, in a not unprecedented move from the High Street and online retailer, that Argos has slashed the retail price of Xbox 360 storage devices, most notably the Xbox 360’s 120GB Hard-Disk Drive (HDD) accessory. Previously retailing for the already competitive price of £87.99, Argos has today lowered their price to only £67.99.
Unsurprisingly, the reduction in price appears to be going down well amongst consumers, as when Electronic Theatre contacted a dozen Argos stores it was discovered that each had remaining stock, but only a single unit. However, it was also brought to our attention that the Xbox 360 Guitar Controller that originally came bundled with Guitar Hero II was available at the extremely low price of £9.99.
Electronic Theatre contacted several High Street and online retailers to ask whether they intend to follow suit. While a handful respectfully declined to comment and a few others stated they had a similar reduction planned, but were not currently willing to discuss their future promotions, Curry’s willing suggested that although the product isn’t offered at a competitive price either online or in-store, they would be willing to honour their “Price Promise” promotion, under which consumers would not only receive the product at the same price as a High Street competitor, but also receive a further 10% price reduction, upon providing proof of the competitor’s lower retail price. This promotion is also available for seven days after initial purchase, so anyone having purchased an Xbox 360 120GB HDD for more than £67.99 from Curry’s in the past few days would be wise to head back to the store.
Argos famously slashed the price of the GameCube soon after launch to only £79.99, which saw sales skyrocket past the PlayStation2 – at that time the sales leader for the console generation – and the company decide to u-turn on its decision to no longer stock the console. This move was, however, a force of Nintendo’s hand for an official price reduction, which undoubtedly damaged the system’s reputation early in its life cycle.
With the news today that Microsoft has upped the memory capacity on-board Xbox 360 Arcade consoles in the US and Japan coupled with today’s High Street retail reduction, a significant drop in consumer cost for videogame memory could well been on the way. Electronic Theatre will keep you updated.

Third-party wireless guitar controllers for the Xbox 360 have been disappointingly hard to come by to date, but Logitech has now come to the rescue with a new Guitar Hero-licensed controller that's similar to its PS3 and PS2 offerings, with the exception of being orange, and Xbox 360-compatible. Otherwise, you can expect the same wood neck, rosewood fingerboard, and metal frets as before, along with a touch-sensitive slider on the neck, strum bar and fret buttons that are "virtually silent," and a promised range of 30 feet. Unfortunately, the guitar also packs the same hefty $199 price tag as its PS3 counterpart, but if that's not too big a deterrent, you can look forward to picking up one of these up in August. Head on past the break for a quick video overview.

No, Xbox Live Silver members, that's not a massive typo you're seeing on the dashboard's Spotlight channel. Microsoft really is offering one month of Gold membership for $1 to US users. Of course, it's a "limited-time offer" -- and when that month's up, you'll be automatically charged for the next 11 months of membership (which you can opt out of). The last time MS offered a deal on Gold membership was back in March, where Silver users were offered one year of the good stuff for $39.99, $10 off the regular price.
