Update: Xbox Live's Major Nelson now says it's all fixed. "The issues around accessing Xbox Live Marketplace content are now resolved," he just posted.
Original story: Xbox Live Marketplace is having some problems in light of Tuesday's maintenance.
"Users may experience difficulties when attempting to use Marketplace and/or making purchases," according to the Xbox status page (just in case you didn't believe the first paragraph).
"We are aware of the problem and working to resolve the technical issues. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience."
Major Nelson added: "I want to let you know that the Live engineers are actively engaged and working on getting this resolved as soon as possible."
He also said that problems are confined to Marketplace, so the majority of the shouting teenagers questioning your sexuality should be unaffected.

Developer Plybrains wants to resurrect 1980s phenomena Madballs on Xbox Live Arcade.
Madballs were baseball-sized, grotesque monster-heads made out of what might as well have been marshmallows. We had a few. Did they squirt water? I can't remember.
The game, Madballs in... Babo: Invasion, arrives this summer and shoves Oculus Orbus and Cyclops into an arena for a fight. They were popular characters and they will have special powers like ramming and spins and slashes and that sort of thing.
There's multiplayer for up to 16 people and, interestingly, the option to import Xbox Live Avatars for some arena-based shooter combat. Maps can be made by players, too.
Presumably more characters will be added if the clumsily named game proves successful.

Activision Blizzard has briefed its advertising agency TBWA to make the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 the "biggest entertainment launch of all time".
The publisher wants the Infinity Ward-developed title to eclipse previous records set by games such as Grand Theft Auto IV, which sold 3.6 million units on its first day with a retail value of USD 310 million.
"We believe the idea that TBWA presented to us delivers on that goal," said Brad Jakeman, chief creative officer of Activision, speaking to Ad Age.
"What we liked most about the TBWA campaign is that it's an idea that's big enough to be articulated in lots of different kind of media. That is always the acid test for a great idea."
While the campaign is currently under wraps, it's expected to incorporate TV, print, outdoor, social and online media.
"The strategic objective is not to just run advertising on day one and say, 'Go to a retailer and buy the game,' but it is to really start building a movement and start broadening the audience for beyond a core gamer audience," added Jakeman.
Earlier in the week, analyst Mike Hickey predicted that Modern Warfare 2 can sell over 11 million units the fiscal year, pulling in USD 803 million for Activision.
"We estimate the combined Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 installed base for US and Europe has grown 125 per cent and 200 per cent, respectively since Modern Warfare's November '07 release, ushering in a remarkably larger market opportunity for Modern Warfare 2," said Hickey.

Microsoft is preparing its Xbox 360 games-on-demand service for launch, and has already rebranded its Originals service on Xbox.com.
All the Original titles currently on offer for download on the Xbox Live Marketplace are now featured as part of the new Games on Demand service, and as before are available to download direct to Xbox 360 consoles.
Microsoft revealed at E3 that it will launch a games-on-demand service for older Xbox 360 titles, including BioShock, Assassin's Creed, Crackdown, LEGO Star Wars and Sonic the Hedgehog.
As well as helping to curb the lucrative second hand market, it also pre-empts any plans to release new titles over the service day-and-date with retail, although Microsoft has so far been at pains to suggest that will not be happening in the near future.
"It's not going to be new games," said Shane Kim in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz recently. "We did it with Xbox Originals and now we're expanding that to Xbox 360 games for the first time.
"They're bigger and more complex and there's a whole bunch of business related issues that we have to work out there if we wanted to start going day-and-date with new releases."
Although the company's big E3 showing was all about Project Natal, the games-on-demand service is considered by some to be a more significant development for the business, with analyst Michael Pachter stating; "This year's show is 'packaged goods are going away'.
"Half of all gaming purchases ten years from now are going to be digital. You can see it coming for the first time ever, the console manufacturers are behind it."
The service is due to go live in August with 30 titles at launch, and Microsoft is promising new releases every week, with consumers also able to buy titles for the first time using credit cards rather than Microsoft Points.

Strauss Zelnick, chairman of Take-Two Interactive, has revealed that the company is hoping for sales of its forthcoming BioShock 2 title to hit 5 million.
That would represent a 67 per cent increase on the original game's 3 million units, and could be enough to give the company a boost in a non-Grand Theft Auto release year.
"We have enough hits," he told Venturebeat. "We have an unmatched hit ratio. BioShock is a great example. It won 50 game-of-the-year awards in 2007. We announced it sold around 3 million units.
"I'd like to see a title like that sell 5 million units. That would make the difference for us. If you have four or five titles that are significantly successful, that will meaningfully change our profitability."
But he was adamant that the publisher didn't face the prospect of struggling to break-even in the 'off' years.
"Thank god we don’t have that problem," he said. "We have control on our overhead. We are seeing pressure on development spending like everyone else. We have 1600 full-time developers in 15 studios.
"We don't have the breakeven problem that you described. That would be pretty risky. That means everyone has to have a hit or you don't break even. We don't have that problem."
BioShock 2: Sea of Dreams is currently slated for release in the Autumn of this year. The Take-Two share price meanwhile was up over 5 per cent to USD 7.90 at the close of the markets yesterday.

If the words Day of the Tentacle, Grim Fandango and Full Throttle bring pangs of joy to your heart of hearts, you'll want to hear this -- several LucasArts higher-ups have stated the desire to bring more of their catalog of classic adventure titles back to life, provided that people show interest in purchasing them. For starters, you could drop a few bucks on the upcoming XBLA and PC remake of The Secret of Monkey Island as a good faith offering.
This sentiment was mentioned to Australian news outlet WAToday by LucasArts community manager Brooks Brown, who said, "if this sells, there's no one at this company who doesn't want to do these games." One fan of the company's beloved point-and-clickers is LucasArts CEO Darrell Rodriguez, who spoke with Joystiq on the possibility of more classic revamps just before E3, and explained that he "couldn't do anything but release more of these titles" if sales for Monkey Island and desire from the gaming populous were strong.
Long story short, if you don't buy Monkey Island, and they don't re-release Grim Fandango because of your non-purchase, we're going to find you and punch you repeatedly in your most delicate places

Additional 256MB creeps into Xbox 360’s innards as Japser gets a makeover
With the Jasper iteration of the Xbox 360’s innards now well and truly out in the market, it transpires that Microsoft has now sneaked a bit of extra memory onto the motherboard’s architecture.
When the Japser iteration of the Xbox 360 (identifiable by the 150w power rating on the box’s serial number) first arrived in late 2008 it came with 256MB of on-board memory.
Rumours of a memory upgrade to 512MB first emerged earlier in the week, and now Microsoft has confirmed to Eurogamer that 512MB is now the internal 360 standard.
“We want to offer consumers a bit more memory at the same low price so they can enjoy more experiences on Xbox Live,” a spokesperson stated.
“The Xbox 360 system software uses some of the included 512MB memory – less storage will be available to users. Additional storage may be needed for game saves, Xbox Live Arcade games, content downloads, personal file storage, and additional enhanced functionality.

It appears the "Games on Demand" section has replaced "Xbox Originals" on Xbox.com marketplace. We're not exactly sure if this is a rebranding of Xbox Originals, but the title of the section would imply that all downloadable games -- which will include Xbox 360 titles in August -- will reside in this section. However, if you click on the "Xbox 360 Games" on the left navigation bar, there's a clearly marked "Full Game" download section, which is currently empty. Also, Xbox Live Arcade titles have a separate section as well.
Perhaps the downloadable Xbox 360 games will reside in two locations on Xbox.com? We've contacted Microsoft for clarification and we'll update as soon as we hear back.

Here's a batch of Ashes Cricket 2009 screenshots, to coincide with news that English batsman Kevin Pietersen will be the "face" of the game.
Pietersen joins Ricky Ponting, Shane Warne and Sir Ian Botham in Ashes Cricket 2009's player line-up.
"I am delighted to be involved with the official game of the Ashes," said 'KP' (like the peanuts). "The game looks fantastic and I'm sure both England and Australia fans are going to relish the opportunity to take part in a virtual Ashes series. Representing your country in the Ashes is a huge honour and I can't wait for it to start."
Codies promises to "build on the heritage" of its classic Brian Lara series with "great batting, bowling and fielding gameplay and authenticity".
It's out for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and PC in August.

While the brief maintenance-related outage didn't result in new updates for Xbox Live or Zune, Xbox.com's MyXbox page got a nice little aesthetic overhaul. The new design gives your avatar more prominence as well as offering faster access to stats.
The new, much sleeker MyXbox page offers quicker access to achievements, recently viewed friends, recently played games, and the like, through a nice highlighted menu. Basically, it's looking more and more like the Xbox's Dashboard, which we're sure is intentional. Go check it out if you're an Xbox Live user.

Eurogamer sat down with Richard Parr and Alex Fry of Criterion Games about the evolution of the technology behind Burnout Paradise, and how they engineered a complex, open world across multiple platforms. "Criterion's method of exacting the most performance from the new architecture isn't so much about threading as such, it's all about parallelization. Rather than lump different game aspects onto different threads (where massive latencies can build as each processor waits for the other to finish its work), game code is highly optimized to make use of what processors are available at any given moment on whatever target hardware, and by choosing the all-important balance points, the experience is like-for-like on all platforms. High-level management code that is unique to each platform then processes the game code according to the hardware that is available." The first part of their Q&A session has also been posted.

Xbox Live has just successfully completed an entire day of downtime. Unfortunately, the current uptime isn't quite as successful, with missing games, failing downloads, and unredeemable code issues abounding.
Microsoft flipped Xbox Live's on switch late last night, and while the snazzy new look of the Xbox.com website distracted many of us for a spell, various technical issues have been becoming more and more apparent as the day drags on. For starters, last week's Sega Vintage Collection 2 seems to have disappeared from the Xbox Live Marketplace altogether, and those games that are still available, including the three new releases, seem to be available for purchase but unavailable for download. I tried to download Magic: The Gathering myself, and was greeted by the screen you see here.
Another rampant issue seems to be the failure of pre-order codes for the Xbox 360 version of Ghostbusters. While owners of the PlayStation 3 version are reporting successful redemption, 360 owners aren't able to get their hands on their early-adapter bonus swag.
We've reached out to Microsoft for a status update on the issues, and are eagerly awaiting some sort of response. In the meantime, the Xbox.com support page has been updated with the following message:
Users may experience difficulties when attempting to use Marketplace and/or making purchases. We are aware of the problem and working to resolve the technical issues. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience.
At least we know they are aware of the problem. I'm just hoping they fix things soon, as I am starting to feel the shakes of pre-emptive Magic withdrawal.

Remedy Entertainment, the developer of the hit game series Max Payne, announced today that it has licensed Umbra Software's rendering optimization middleware for their highly anticipated new title Alan Wake.
"Umbra gave a significant boost in rendering performance on the Xbox360, and at the same time made our content creation faster. With Umbra's culling technology, Remedy's team can add more details to Alan Wake's world and concentrate on the cool visuals while minimizing tedious work such as adding portals," said Remedy Entertainment's Development Director Markus M?ki.
Umbra is a GPU accelerated rendering optimization middleware available for PC, Xbox360 and PS3. Umbra has two major application areas: it increases frame rate dramatically, and makes the content pipeline faster and more effective.
"It's been a pleasure working with Remedy on Alan Wake," said Marko Nurro, Umbra Software's CEO. "Remedy is one of the most innovative and technically competent studios in the world. Their games just rock, simple as that."

Dream Arcades invites gamers to kick some butt without being tied down while playing fighting games such as Street Fighter IV, and the upcoming King of Fighters XII. The Dream Stick, is made with real arcade parts and will be available on June 30 for $159, just in time for the release of Street Fighter IV for PC (adaptor required for PC) .
Dream Stick pre-orders begin today at a special discounted price of $129.
"Dream Arcades has finally given hardcore fighting game fans the ultimate fight stick that they've been looking for simply by eliminating the need for fighting players to have to compromise between corded Japanese style fight sticks and wireless game pads." Says Ryan M., Street Fighter fan and Tournament Player. "Dream Arcades Dream Stick is unquestionably a much finer arcade stick than others due to its sturdy construction, arcade authentic controls, and wireless functionality that features no noticeable lag."
The Dream Stick is made to make it easy for hardcore gamers to modify the stick by customizing joysticks and buttons. The Dream Stick bridges the gap between the hardcore tournament market and the home gamers who just want a great stick to play with their friends.
"The Dream Stick is the perfect way for us to bring the arcade experience into the home, at a lower price point and a smaller footprint," says Michael Ware, founder of Dream Arcades. "Nothing compares to a real arcade controller for playing arcade games and because there's no wires it's simple to use."
Dream Arcades is the only home arcade manufacturer with a complete line of products from personal arcade joysticks, arcade kits (just add your own computer system or game console), complete arcades (just plug in and play). Since 2002, the company has had one goal – to deliver the ultimate home arcade experience to gamers everywhere.

This fall, an Xbox 360 game will have the word "gay" in its title. But will 360 gamers be able to call themselves gay by then?
During an E3 interview with Microsoft's corporate vice president of Xbox Live software and services, John Schappert, I posed a question that I'd been sent by a reader:
How did the company reconcile the fall offering of a game called "Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony" with the fact that Microsoft still doesn't let gamers mention their sexual orientation in their Xbox Live profiles or use the term gay in their Gamertag?
"I think the two are very separate issues," Schappert responded. "That said, [Xbox Live head of standards enforcement] Stephen [Toulouse] continues to work with our team and we continue to look for ways for people to personally express themselves and you can look for more features coming to Xbox Live, but nothing to announce right now. They're working on some of that stuff and the community has been very involved. We try to walk the fine line where we do the right thing to allow people to express themselves but not have it be taken overboard.
In February, following the allegations by a gamer that she was banned from Xbox Live because she identified herself as a lesbian Toulouse told me that his team is working on a solution. The team wants "to provide the capability for our users to express relationship preference or gender without a way for it to be misused." I had suggested letting people mark a checkbox or use a pull-down tab to denote their sexual orientation. He said that kind of idea was on the table but that he could not detail the company's plans.
At E3, I pressed Schappert on whether the fall release of the "Grand Theft Auto" episode was a de facto deadline to get this all sorted out, as to avoid a double standard. He reiterated his reply that the game and the Xbox Live standards are two different issues. And it's not as if games haven't already allowed players to be gay or witness gay relationships, as seen in Fable II or Mass Effect.
Letting a gamer identify their sexual orientation on Xbox Live is still in the works. Schappert concluded: "I can say that we are working on that issue."

Activision may be considering a subscription-based multiplayer option for the Call of Duty series.
The service would be "in addition" to features the series offers today, according to a mysterious survey drudged up by Destructoid. In other words: you wouldn't lose, only gain.
The paid-for service "may" offer early access to content like map packs and betas; increase character customisation options; add enhanced statistic-tracking and community features; include exclusive in-game modes and challenges; and open a suite of team-management services for competitive play.
Examples given are persistent attributes that carry over from game to game, War Rooms to meet and plan in and exclusive tournaments and leagues.
These will be paid for monthly, quarterly or yearly, or included with Special Edition versions of the game at retail. The survey asks, "How likely are you to purchase or subscribe to this online service when the next Call of Duty game comes out?"
Activision told Eurogamer it does not comment on rumour and speculation.
But it's not the first time Activision has mulled over the idea of a more ambitious online approach for Call of Duty - a series that has an already popular and robust multiplayer segment.
"When you think about other properties that we own and control like Call of Duty, and what would be the natural evolution of a property like Call of Duty into a massively multiplayer environment, and how do you monetise that, the same rules apply," said Kotick in March 2008, leaking learning from talks with Blizzard while the pair discussed mergers.
Modern Warfare 2, the sixth Call of Duty game, is developed by Infinity Ward and due out 10th November for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. We stuffed the gamepages below with tons of E3 content. Go check. Now, soldier!

Realtime Worlds CEO, David Jones, has told GamesIndustry.biz that he's excited to see how Microsoft and Sony have responded to the motion-control challenge, but warned that while the former's much-talked about Project Natal system was "cool", it may not be as appropriate for core gamers as it would for a more mainstream audience.
Jones, talking ahead of his keynote appearances at GameHorizon and Develop this year, went on to explain that if it was to appeal to that sector, it would "absolutely need the right kind of killer software" to do so.
"Obviously hats off to Nintendo for having done all that, but it's interesting to see how Sony, and Microsoft especially, are trying to broaden their demographics," he said. "It's kind of exciting.
"My own personal opinion is that Natal is cool, although having nothing physical is going to be kind of strange for core gamers. It's just going to absolutely need the right kind of killer software. There's this talk that core games can adopt this stuff, but I don't think so. Core games are really about having something physical in your hands.
He went on to say that, as a designer of games for the core market, having that physical item was important, and he therefore leant more towards the Sony motion-control solution.
"I think that's why I like Sony's technology a little bit better in a way, having the wireless controller in your hand, with very high precision. I thought that was an interesting and good step for core gamers as well - but complete body-tracking? For me it'll have to be about that killer app that just could not have been done in any other way, apart from with that controller. That's going to be a challenge, and I'll be interested to see what that is."

CryTek's newest, shiniest piece of tech is CryEngine 3, which will be put to use in the upcoming PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Crysis 2. While the first footage of the console versions looks remarkably similar to what you'd get from a PC, a closer examination reveals how top-end gaming PCs are still capable of rendering better graphics with CryEngine 2. According to tehdaza on YouTube, "CryEngine 3 running on console hardware is about the same as CryEngine 2 running on 'medium' settings." The look of the console versions can be recreated on the PC by using low textures, high shaders and object geometry and medium on all other settings.
You can check out the video after the break. In it, you'll be able to compare the draw distance of the two engines and see the change in physics, texture work and more.
