Microsoft's Chris Lewis suggests it wants to be first to show football, movies and more
Microsoft believes that securing exclusive televised content can be the next step in Xbox 360’s growing domination of UK living rooms.
The firm signed a partnership deal with Pay-TV broadcaster Canal Plus in France last week – in a similar agreement to that reached with BSkyB last month in the UK.
Both deals will see Xbox 360 ‘mirror’ certain broadcasts from both channels.
But European Xbox boss Chris Lewis told MCV this week that the firm is keen to eventually acquire exclusive rights to a major broadcast– which could be movies, TV shows or football games.
When asked if Xbox could ever bid for exclusive televised content, Lewis told MCV:
“Now that would be very cool, wouldn’t it? We’ve shown our focus on getting people to think about Xbox 360 as a destination vehicle in the home. We’re fixated on it. We want to offer the kind of entertainment experiences that are both unique and exclusive.
“People are very demanding in what they consume. I’ve got nothing specific to announce, but Xbox 360 increasingly will be the place consumers go to get their entertainment.
He added: “Football’s something of a religion in Europe, and we’re undoubtedly aware of people’s desire to access live Premiership and Champions League football – which are both available to us through our Sky deal.
“Exclusivity is a part of that. There’s nothing specific we have to say right now, but you can be sure we’re focusing on the right partnerships to give that sort of exclusivity. That’s what our consumers are going to want from us.”

Infinity Ward's Community Manager, Robert Bowling, recently twittered what is believed to be the final boxart for Modern Warfare 2. (pictured below)
"Just recieved the first Modern Warfare 2 boxes straight off the press. "Shit just got real," he wrote.
What's worth noting here is that "Call of Duty" is now back on the box. The title was previously removed and the game was to simply be called Modern Warfare 2.
This move should come as no surprise to fans. A survey conducted last month suggested Activision could be losing a large chunk of the game's brand awareness by dropping the "Call of Duty" title from the series.
We here at the office are a little skeptical about how final this design is, though, considering the game is still far away from its November release date.
We reached out to Activision to confirm whether or not this is indeed the final packaging. We'll update you when we know.

Game Observer conducted an interview with Ashley Cheng, Production Director at Bethesda. He answered questions about the Gamebryo engine, why they prefer it over other engines and the advantages it presented while making Fallout 3. Cheng also talks a bit about what inspired their designers while making Fallout 3 and what is in store for the PS3. Apparently, much of the team has read Cormac McCarthy's The Road, which inspired the look and story of Fallout 3. Bethesda, according to Cheng, will never create a game like Final Fantasy because the Gamebryo engine is better at handling 'open ended worlds ripe for exploration.'"
Meanwhile, Bethesda's Jeff Gardiner spoke recently about the game's fifth and final DLC release, Mothership Zeta, which finds players aboard an alien spaceship in orbit. He said, "The player will have a handful of tasty alien technologies to play with. There are new fire arms and melee weapons, which will comprise the most powerful weaponry in the game."

Codemasters will offer a post-release demo of FUEL for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 today.
The PC version will be available from the FUEL website at 2pm BST (UK time). The console versions may not pop up until later.
The demo opens Ocean Rush career event and Blitz Challenge. The former is a race for seven people and the latter is a race for one person and their clock.
Console versions will also have online play for two weeks from launch, either on the Tsunami Reef course with up to 15 others or on the Ocean Rush career event.
FUEL is set in a post-apocalyptic future where racers risk life and limb to win fuel, ironically. The game came out in early June but unfortunately we weren't massive fans.

Electronic Arts has doubled the server capacity for the online title Battlefield 1943 less than 24 hours into its release.
The game released on Xbox 360 yesterday, but with servers quickly reaching capacity some users were unable to play the multiplayer-only title, forcing developer DICE to scramble to meet demand.
"Good news, the game is incredibly successful beyond even my expectations. We have reached server capacity, but the bad news about this now some people can't join unless someone leaves," admitted Greg Van Dyke, of DICE, on the official forums.
After adding more servers, particularly in Europe, DICE said it hoped to double the capacity for users, ahead of its release on Sony's PSN service later today.
"We are working to increase our server capacity to almost double what it is currently. This will be complete today West Coast time."
The title costs GBP 9.99 on PlayStation 3 and 1200 MS points (GBP 10.20) on Xbox Live.

Red Faction and UFC publisher THQ has told GamesIndustry.biz that it intends to support Sony's PlayStation 3 wand and Microsoft's Project Natal on day one of release.
Dropping hints that Drawn to Life – the title already in development for Wii – could be one of its first releases, Bilson said that publishers are most likely to release versions of existing franchises and family friendly games to keep costs low initially, rather than risk new IP on unproven technology.
"We'll be there at launch with some very friendly titles for the first audience who will adopt that stuff, which is families," said Bilson in an exclusive interview published today.
"The technology is really excellent, for both Xbox 360 and PS3, so now it's all about the creative versus the business model. What's the installed base like and how much can I spend against those? Of course at first you'll see games that cost less money, but as the installed base grows we'll do more robust stuff."
Bilson said that the company will avoid simply porting titles across to the different motion control systems, and consumers are well aware of attempts by publishers to release quick shovelware on the new systems.
"We're not going to just port stuff over, each one of those platforms needs a lot of design love," he offered.
"The same way we would treat Drawn to Life on Wii, we would treat similar games on those systems. It's about how can we best use Project Natal and how can we best use the Sony controller. We have this stuff at the studios, we've had it for a while."
He added: "But I don't want to just splay stuff across because people will only play it once and not bother again. It's got to be a great Natal game, or a great Sony game, or a great Wii game. Consumers are smart, they won't be fooled by that."

It’s the last stop. The final destination. The BIG SHOW. It’s where dreams born in backyards are finally realized. Where the fences are FARTHER. The grandstands are LARGER. And the spotlight is BRIGHTER. It’s where thieves run FASTER, pitchers throw HARDER and the sluggers go DEEPER. Where the bats are BIGGER, the spikes are SHARPER and the comebacks are harder to swallow. It’s where home runs are RUTHIAN and fastballs CATCH FIRE. It’s where a monster lurks in left. Where bombers terrorize the night. And where the confines aren’t always so friendly. It’s THE BIGS. And come July, everything about them is about to get BIGGER.

An inside source close to Joystiq has informed us LucasArts is bringing a brand new game (imagine that!) to XBLA, coinciding with the company's focus on downloadable releases as of late. Dubbed Lucidity, this title is described as a kind of side-scrolling adventure ... with a twist. Instead of controlling the main character, Sofi, in the traditional manner, players instead place certain objects in her path as she independently navigates the gameworld. As she runs into these objects, she will use them to tackle whatever obstacle is in her way.
The game will definitely have a fantasy element to it, as it supposedly takes place inside of Sofi's head while she's looking for her grandmother. Let's just hope there's no big bad wolf waiting at grandma's to gobble her up, though.

Battlefield 1943 is available today for purchase and play on Xbox Live Arcade, and the quote-laden launch trailer is here to compel you.
This is the UK launch trailer for DICE's big thing in a small package Battlefield release, but luckily for those of us in the U.S. they included a quote that lists the game at $15, so we don't get confused by the pound price tag at the end of the video.
As for the game itself, I've yet to try it out, but DICE has done good by me so far, with a few notable exceptions, so I am willing to give the old killing my teammates while trying to figure out airplane controls a go again. And don't worry PlayStation 3 owners! You'll get your chance tomorrow. Sony just really likes Thursdays.

EA has announced two free updates for Fight Night Round 4, due to arrive later this summer.
The first, penned for early August, adds a new gym, gameplay option sliders and new equipment. There's an alternate version of Sugar Ray Leonard for Xbox 360 owners, too. Wonder what EA has done to him.
Following in September will be the asked-for option to switch to face-button controls for punches. Currently, right thumbstick gestures control punches - a mechanic introduced successfully in Fight Night Round 3.
Fight Night Round 4 was released just weeks ago at the end of June. And praise be given, for EA has made another sturdy brawler with a better arsenal and glitzier sheen than ever before.

After tipping us off last week, Korean developer Bluside has sent over the first shots for the Xbox 360 version of Kingdom Under Fire II. Game's currently scheduled in for the second half of 2010 with DLC to follow.
According to PR person Moon Kim (who should be in the game with an awesome name like that), KUFII won't be a sequel to Circle of Doom. Instead it'll be "staying true to the action RTS tradition of the series that began with The Crusaders and Heroes."
If you ever played Circle of Doom, you'll know that's a good thing. First shots below. Let's hope the final game runs okay with all those units on screen.

The simultaneous release of "psychological thriller" Alan Wake on PC is beginning to look in doubt, as developer Remedy confirms its "focusing all our efforts" on development of the Xbox 360 version of the game.
Speaking in a post on the game's official forums, a Remedy spokesperson said it will be "making comments in regards to the PC at a later in time."
Wake was originally announced for Xbox 360 and PC and has even been demoed on Windows in the past. With Microsoft not exactly hot on PC gaming at the moment, the mouse and keyboard community is expectedly concerned.
"I'm a PC gamer at heart (have a Core i7, Radeon 4890, 5.1 audio setup at home) so I do appreciate your concerns," the Remedy spokesperson added.
We've asked Microsoft for comment. Alan Wake will be release on Xbox 360 at least in "spring 2010".

Gear Live found a roundabout, but clever, way of streaming Zune tracks onto your iPhone. Why would you do that? Because Zune Pass gets you a basically unlimited amount of songs, and they don't play natively on the iPhone.
What you do is set up Orb on a Windows machine to transcode, on the fly, your already downloaded Zune songs. This way you can listen to your music (your entire music library, not just 16GB or 32GB worth) wherever you have an internet connection. It works over 3G as well as Wi-Fi, but EDGE is a little too slow for full-quality music.

If Johnny Chung Lee says something, we're inclined to believe him, and not just because we're almost certain he's a wizard. So when he says that Microsoft's body-tracking Project Natal will "almost certainly" spawn new genres, we're inclined to nod our heads in agreement.
"Natal provides a very different set of input capabilities than your typical game pad," he told 360 Magazine. "To really take advantage of those capabilities, new kinds of experiences will have to be explored."
Wait, is "NAMBLA sim" a genre?

With all the talk of fancy open-ended environments, playable flashbacks and new cooperative modes, we'd almost forgotten about ODST's offering of new Halo 3 maps! When it launches later this year, Bungie's latest entry in the epic space hoop saga will include a Halo 3 multiplayer disc, which will contain three new maps (in addition to all the ones you've come to love and die repeatedly in).
Be sure to take a look at "Heretic" (the return of Halo 2's "Midship" arena), "Citadel" and "Longshore" in the gallery below. We've found that staring intently at them while bobbing back in forth in our seats provides a good, albeit imperfect, approximation of actual gameplay. We're just missing the cybernetic crotch thrusting toward us in regular intervals.
