As we previously reported, Sega and Hori are teaming up for the Virtual On player's dream peripheral. In Japan, the two firms will make available a specially designed Twin Sticks device for the Xbox Live Arcade version of Virtual On Oratorio Tangram. Over the weekend, they provided a first look at the device.
For those who are unfamiliar, Twin Sticks is the name given to the controller configuration that's used with the Virtual On series. In the arcade version, players control their mechs with two levers. As anyone who's actually piloted a mech will tell you, this is the most realistic control method, as it allows you to easily keep an eye on your opponent while freely moving about in all directions.
Home versions of the Virtual On games have offered control schemes adapted to standard controllers, but in the past Sega has usually also released a special Twin Sticks device to mimic the arcade version's controls. This was unlikely for the XLA version of the game, as a special peripheral for a download-only title is pretty much unheard of.
Sure enough, the announcement of the Xbox 360 peripheral, formally known as Twin Sticks EX, came with a catch. The device will be sold for 30,000 yen, or around $300 US. That's about the same price as a fully equipped Xbox 360 console over there. Furthermore, the device is pre-order only, and if Hori does not get enough pre-orders, it will cancel production.
So what will your $300 get you?
Sega and Hori note that the device uses lever parts from arcade parts maker Sanwa Denshi along with technology that Hori has used for its Real Arcade series of arcade sticks.
The device is wired, and probably can't be used for most other Xbox 360 games, but at the very least it has a headset jack so players can chat with friends while they play.
Assuming the device goes into production (those in Japan can support the cause by place a pre-order through the Hori Store site), buyers will get their sticks on November 12.
Would you pay $300 for a special Twin Sticks peripheral? Not that anything like this has a chance of coming out in America, but let us know what you think in the comments section.

The new Bionic Commando sold a mere 27,000 units during its first month of sale in the US this May, reports Gamasutra. Well, its "first month" might be stretching it (like a grapple arm) a bit. The title went on sale May 19, which means it was at retail for the Xbox 360 and PS3 for a little under two weeks. Although, even with that caveat, those sales figures still aren't good for the modestly reviewed title, which had plenty of promotion.
Terminator Salvation, also developed by (the allegedly downsized) Grin and released around the same time as BC, sold 43,000 units with exceptionally poor reviews. To really put things in perspective, Bionic Commando Rearmed -- the high-def remake of the classic game -- sold 130,000 copies during its first week late last year.

June 15th, 2009, 17:22 Posted By: wraggster
Newly appointed creative director of Microsoft Europe, Peter Molyneux, has said that he wants to help internal studios – including Banjo creators Rare – regain a sense of identity within the company.
Molyneux was speaking following his promotion to a role which will see him liaise with all internal and external developers and help them focus on creative and innovative output.
"Actually one of the things I really want to do is help Rare have more of an identity," said Molyneux in an exclusive interview published today. "And make sure the people at Rare are seen more within the industry."
Although one of Microsoft Game Studios most expensive and well-known development teams, Rare has yet to establish a breakout hit for the company in the same league as Bungie's Halo or Lionhead's Fable. The closest the team has come is Viva Piñata, but a number of titles including Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts and Perfect Dark Zero have failed to spark with consumers and achieve significant sales numbers.
And unlike Lionhead or Bungie before it separated from Microsoft, the company is still considered secretive and lacking a public profile.
"I was totally blown away from the amount of talent that there is at Rare, but it's just that they come from a background where Nintendo required them to be this very, very secretive company," offered Molyneux. "I just want to give them the confidence to tell the world what they're doing. I hope you're going to see more from Rare and I want to help them get well known," he added.
However, Molyneux said that what his new position won't involve is interfering with the creative process and watering down a studio's own distinctive style - "you'll definitely still recognise a Rare game," he said.

Not only will Modern Warfare 2 be the biggest game of 2009, but it'll sell 11 million copies this year alone.
That's according to predictions made by industry analyst, Mike Hickey, who says that Infinity Ward's sequel will make Activision $803 million in 2009. Happy days.
"It's possible that the game could be one of the largest entertainment releases of all time," noted the Janco Partners analyst.
"If you assume similar channel unit sales velocity as GTA IV, the game could potentially sell through 7.8 million units globally with an estimated retail value of more than $569 million in the first week.
"Continuing the same channel logic, it's possible the game could sell through to consumers' 4.6 million units globally with an estimated retail value of more than $338 million in the first day."
Last week Activision CEO Mike Griffith said he expects Modern Warfare 2 to be the best-selling Call Of Duty game to date.

FFXIII producer Yoshinori Kitase has admitted that work on the 360 version of the game didn't start until after the PS3 playable demo was released - in April.
"Up to the trial demo version that was released [in April] in Japan, [FFXIII] was PS3-only in terms of development," Kitase said.
"The Xbox 360 version is definitely following after the PS3 version, but [we] were finally able to come to a point in the PS3 development where some of the staff could take their hands off and start programming the 360 version," he went on to tell Giant Bomb.
Sounds like they need to pull their fingers out.

Burnout Paradise developer Criterion reckons that developers who talk about maxing out the potential of a games console are being a bit silly.
"That's proof that you're not the best," technical director Richard Parr told Eurogamer's Digital Foundry channel. "It means you're out of ideas."
"You always find new ways to do things, the constraints lift. Not just with a new console generation but with every game you do," senior engineer Alex Fry added. "Whether it's a sequel or whether it's a new game, you learn to do things differently... better. The constraints go away because you learn. While it's nice to say you've maxed something out, there's not really any point."
Fry and Parr were speaking to Digital Foundry for today's Burnout Paradise tech retrospective, which explores the origins and processes behind one of the current generation's most respectable game engines.
Fry and Parr explain how the team set about constructing a world that performs equally well on PS3, Xbox 360 and latterly PC despite the difficulties experienced by their colleagues at other studios.

Microsoft has confirmed the inclusion of notorious and prestigious endurance race 24 Hours of Le Mans in Forza Motorsport 3.
This is the real-life event where drivers race over the course of an entire day, taking frequent stops at Welcome Inns up and down the M1.
Le Mans circuits Le Sarthe and Bugatti will be included, as will the 24 Hours of Le Mans multi-class racing mode.
Microsoft also announced an enormous garage of over 100 cars for Forza Motorsport 3, which launches exclusively on Xbox 360 this October.
Developer Turn 10 revved the Forza Motorsport 3 engine loud and proud at E3 this year, promising "the best simulator on any console". Yamauchi! That's bold.

We'd be careful about putting too much stock into an admittedly far off rumor, but the gang at 1UP claim they've heard from those in the know that Microsoft's set to release a new Xbox console in Fall 2010, and that current media darling Project Natal is "the cornerstone" of that evolution. Specs-wise, it's suggested we're looking at only a marginal boost analogous to Nintendo's GameCube-to-Wii transition -- place your bets on how long it'll take to "max out" this time -- as well as a rebranding (Xbox Natal, anyone?) aimed at attracting the highly coveted, more mainstream / casual audience, before Mario and the crew catch a second wind with the oft-rumored Wii HD. There's nothing unbelievable about these whispers, but again, Fall 2010 is quite a ways off and anything can happen in the meantime. First unveiling will allegedly be the 2010 Game Developers Conference in early March, so your best bet for now is to hold tight and keep a close eye on who gets a primetime slot among that event's keynote speeches.

There appears to possibly be a new firmware/hardware revision for the LiteOn drive that was originally posted on these German forums. It is being discussed on our forums
here
So far, it is just speculation at this point. It appears the user is claiming the key's are coming back all 00's. We are unsure if it is user error, or a new protection. Any users with this revision please email iriez at xbins dot org with any information. If it truely is new protection, we will need to get our hands on it! Donors will be taken care of!

Kotaku is reporting that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-shelled has received a release date of July 22, and will be a timed exclusive for the Xbox 360. Since we're not in the business of just believing everything we read, we decided to contact Ubisoft for some clarification.
Our rep at Ubisoft indeed did confirm the release date and the timed exclusivity on Xbox Live Arcade, which is likely to tick off a few PS3 owners out there. We'd suggest copious amounts of Infamous and, if you're lucky enough, the Uncharted 2 beta to get you through these tough times.

Hey, did you know Ubisoft is still releasing DLC for HAWX? We know, we're as surprised as you are! And apparently this latest pack, "Supremacy," is even pricier than usual at $9.99. But don't worry, it's a greatest hits package, with all of the planes released for the game so far lumped into one big chunk.
After the break, we've got a collection of letters, numbers and acronyms that apparently represent some of the planes you'll find if you download "Supremacy." For the rest of us? We've got pictures

Capcom's Japanese site for Lost Planet 2 has been updated with estimated release periods for both the Xbox 360 and newly-announced PlayStation 3 versions. The Xbox 360 version is listed as coming out this winter, but the PlayStation 3 version has an undetermined date. It appears, then, that Lost Planet 2 will be a timed exclusive for the 360, at least in Japan. Unless Capcom's unnanounced PS3 release window turns out the same as the 360 release window.
Unofficial sources (by which we mean gamestop.com) show the same North American release date, February 23, for both versions, but that could be a placeholder. We're currently inquiring with both Capcom and Microsoft to determine the timing of the North American releases.
We're more apt to believe, by the way, that the delay in Japan is due to starting the PS3 version later, and not due to any agreements -- because why on earth would Capcom agree to make something Xbox 360 exclusive in Japan for any period of time?

Microsoft's Shane Kim has said that Project Natal is designed to target the "60 per cent of households where a videogame console doesn't exist", rather than current casual gamers "or even PS2 people who haven't upgraded".
Speaking to Kotaku, Kim, who handles Microsoft's long-term console strategy, reiterated the E3 mantra that any controller is a barrier to entry for the sort of people the platform holder is trying to entice.
He also said that the arrival of the company's ambitious motion control system will be comparable to the arrival of the console itself in 2005.
That means making sure that there are really good games there from day one. "That's similar to how you would think of the launch of a new console. It's got to have a great launch line-up," he said. "That's the same thing here."
On the off chance you've been away for a couple of weeks, hello! And you can find out what all this Natal nonsense is about by reading the announcement report, our hands-on, and interviews with Peter Molyneux, engineer Alex Kipman and executive John Schappert.
Our main concern with Natal is: how do you throw the controller against the wall if you're not holding one?

Microsoft has defended the decision to charge top whack for Halo 3: ODST, despite Bungie originally promising a cheaper price to offset a short story campaign.
"At the time of those statements, the overall scope of Halo 3: ODST was not yet finalised, and since then the project has grown increasingly more ambitious. We believe this standalone experience is much more than just an expansion," Microsoft told Joystiq.
"Halo 3: ODST provides a new campaign from the point of view of an entirely new character. Combine that with three new multiplayer maps, the entirely new cooperative mode called Firefight, and the complete Halo 3 multiplayer collection on a standalone disc, we feel this is a good value and tremendous addition to the Halo franchise."
We've asked Bungie for comment.
Halo 3: ODST arrives on 22nd September exclusively for Xbox 360. Bungie was on hand at E3 to show the game, demonstrating an early portion of the campaign on-stage at Microsoft's platform holder keynote address.
There, Bungie and Microsoft also revealed Halo: Reach, a top-secret first-person shooter project for release during autumn 2010.

Digital delivery of games and gaming content is the inevitable future. But how prevalent is it in the present? The NPD Group estimate that, as it stands, digital downloads on a console are doing...OK.
The retail tracking firm reckon that, of all Xbox Live "Gold" subscribers, 18% of them "regularly download from Xbox Live Arcade". When it comes to the PlayStation Network, things aren't quite as big, as only an estimated 10% of account holders "regularly buy digitally from Sony's PlayStation Network".
It's important to note that this survey isn't counting somebody who bought a single copy of Street Fighter II over XBLA and left it at that. It's tracking those who buy, and buy often.

THQ's latest action title, Red Faction: Guerilla, is likely to face stiff competition from Activison's Prototype, with immediate price cuts on the title also an indication of poor sales.
That's according to Cowen's Doug Creutz, who has lowered full year sales estimates for the title from 670,000 units to 500,000.
"Although the 360 SKU of Red Faction: Guerilla remains in the top 10 sellers at both Amazon.com and Gamestop.com, we note that at Amazon the title is already garnering a USD 7.50 discount," wrote Creutz in his latest note to investors.
"The PS3 SKU has fallen off the map at both sites. Activision Blizzard’s recent release Prototype is tracking far better on both the 360 and PS3, and we believe that title could be impacting Red Faction sales."
Red Faction Guerilla entered the UK charts at number three this week, and follows impressive sales of the publishers UFC 2009 Undisputed title in the US and the UK.
However, Creutz doesn't see any more strong releases from the publisher until 2010 and regardless of UFC success has left its rating of THQ shares as 'neutral'.
"With UFC’s successful debut in the rearview mirror, and Red Faction apparently not gaining traction, THQ’s next important release will be Darksiders in January 2010, for which we continue to have cautious expectations. THQ has a very light holiday release slate, with no major releases aside from its annual WWE title," he added.
