Rogue sellers are few, retail holding the line says UK boss
Activision’s UK MD Andrew Brown has contacted MCV to show his confidence and trust in retail as stores all over the country prepare to start selling Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 from Tuesday.
Any cases of early selling are being quickly and firmly dealt with by retail head offices and are accidental, insists Brown.
But he admits he cannot control the early shipping of copies by an online retailer like Zavvi when Activision has not supplied stock directly.
Above all, Activision is delighted so far with the way retail has approached such a huge release.
The scale of the launch is enormous, with some trade sources suggesting that over 1.8 million units are being initially shipped in the UK alone.
“We know how closely all of retail reads MCV, from senior buyers to store managers at the big chains and solus indie stores. So given that the release of Modern Warfare 2 is only days away now, it is really important that we get across our message of trust and belief in them,” Brown explained.
“I have to say that retail is showing a sophisticated approach to ensuring that all UK consumers get to purchase the game at the same time.”
Brown insists that Activision is working closely with High Street and online retail to ensure as orderly a marketplace as possible. But, as other publishers have experienced with major releases in the past, there will always be some variables at play.
“Certain things on a massive release like this are out of our control,” Brown continued. “A member of in-store staff within a chain can make a genuine mistake, for example, and there will be some copies coming into the UK that are not supplied by us directly or by our distribution partner Centresoft.
“But we remain absolutely confident that all supermarkets, specialist chains and independents are doing everything they can to hold the line.
“All of the retailers in the UK supplied by us or Centresoft are passionately committed to making sure that the release of Modern Warfare 2 is a very special event. There will be more midnight openings than there have been for any other game in the history of gaming in the UK.
“We want all the readers of MCV to know that we are doing our best and we are being fair. Many different retailers have invested significant resources into their promotions. We are delighted with that and supporting retail wherever we can.
“We cannot control everything and there are some things we are simply not allowed to control, but I can assure retail and consumers alike that we are doing all we can to give everyone a fair crack of the whip.”
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 arrives across all stores in the UK from Tuesday November 10th on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.

Microsoft's confirmed that upcoming Xbox 360 social network features - currently being beta tested - cannot be used by those under the age of 18.
"As some of you might be aware, those under the age of 18 are not able to access Twitter, Facebook and Last.fm in our public preview," says MS community man Major Nelson. "I want to let you know that this will remain the case when it launches to the world soon."
Apparently the platform holder made the decision because as it stands, "parents aren't able to use Family Settings to customize which of these applications their children can access.
"In order to offer an age-appropriate environment for everyone, we decided to turn off these applications for those Gold members under the age of 18," says the Major.
"As expected, this has been a hot topic with the preview users. We want to make sure everyone was aware," he added, noting that the development team is busy working on an update that gives parents the choice of which social applications their children can access.
"The team hope to roll this out several weeks after launch and I will update you on the exact date as it gets closer."

Microsoft has released an updated statement regarding the availability of the Sky Player on the Xbox 360 platform, noting that the service is now available to "100 per cent" of the platform's user base in the UK and Ireland.
The service originally launched ten days ago, but higher-than-expected demand caused it to buckle under the load, and a revised rollout was phased in a week later.
But now the company has confirmed that the TV and film content is available to everybody.
"As you may know we have been implementing a gradual rollout of the Sky Player on Xbox 360 service since our initial launch, and as of today, 100 per cent of the Xbox base can access Sky Player, and tens of thousands of new users are accessing the service daily," read the statement. "The quality of the service remains of the utmost importance to both Sky and Xbox, and as such we will run further testing over the weekend and continue to monitor the service closely."

Copies of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 have begun turning up on consumer's doormats, with both LoveFilm and The Hut sending the game out early.
And in mainland Europe High Street retailers have begun selling copies of the game in-store, with one consumer showing GamesIndustry.biz copies of the PC version of the game and a receipt as proof of purchase.
The Hut, which also despatches games for LoveFilm, admitted the blunder in a statement to GamesIndustry.biz, stating: "We are dedicated to getting products to customers on release. We use Royal Mail as our preferred courier and were advised to dispatch on Thursday for delivery on Tuesday due to the impending strike action. This was called off on Thursday evening and we have contacted Royal Mail to hold the product until Tuesday."
Images of the game along with covering notes from retailers have begun surfacing on the internet, as users post pictures and gain the kudos of playing the game early.
Activision's title isn't officially due until Tuesday November 10, with retailers opening at midnight to begin selling the game. In the UK, an official launch will take place at HMV in London, with rival retailers GAME and Gamestation also opening the majority of their outlets for eager consumers.
HMV said earlier this week that it would not be sending out early copies of the game, and today GAME told our sister site Eurogamer.net that it would honour the street date.

You can't keep a phoenix down and this Xbox 360 wireless n adapter seems to be a bird of similar feather. After discretely showing up on US retail sites and subsequently managing to drop off into internet obscurity, the 802.11n-compliant peripheral has returned to the scene via Costco's site, this time with a November 10th shipping date and a more attractive than before $88 price tag. With only five days until the 10th, will this finally be the price and date that stick? Who knows -- but at least this time we won't have to wait long to find out.

HMV has clarified that no copies of Modern Warfare 2 have been sent to customers, despite official emails stating otherwise.
"Some customers may have received an email alert suggesting that the dispatch process is under way, but the stock has not yet been sent," a spokesperson for the retailer told Eurogamer.
"Fulfilling orders will obviously be a major undertaking, and in order to implement this in a timely manner, we have had to initiate the transaction process to begin printing off address labels. This has triggered the email alert, but stock has not been shipped.
"HMV would never knowingly break a street date," the spokesperson added.
Modern Warfare 2 launches on Tuesday, November 10, although some retailers, such as ShopTo, are still awaiting stock.

It's time to turn the non-believers into believers, lol.
Assuming most people don't pay much attention to the Cxbx homepage as much as they used to, here's what sir Caustik had to say recently:
http://caustik.com/cxbx
"shogun made more progress on his Cxbx branch. The game "Panzer Dragoon ORTA" noew goes in-game, albiet without 3D. Check out shogun's new blog (here) to read more details and to keep up to date with his future progress!"
Since then, a few more updates have been added allowing further in-game progress, not playable because the frame rates are low and a handful of other bugs (sound buffer cache overflows, 2D geometry overlapping the 3D scene, garbage polygons and a missing DirectSound function call to name a few). The gfx bugs are rather heavy in-game, but the audio playback is rock solid and 90% stutter free!
There's also a Youtube video showing a greater visual of such progress.
Isn't it great to finally see a SEGA title running on Cxbx? IMO, every Xbox game with the SEGA logo was an instant classic Btw, check the blog every so often. You might be surprised by what you'll see!
Shogun.

Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb discusses the recent string of Xbox Live piracy console bannings, delivering an important caveat to those purchasing used machines in the process.
Last week Microsoft launched a string of Xbox Live console bans on Xbox 360s that had been modified to play pirated software, which naturally cause an uproar among people who have modified their Xbox 360 consoles to play pirated software. Go figure. Major Nelson explains that it's all for the sake of the community members that actively spend money on games.
As you may have read online, we've been actively banning consoles from Xbox LIVE that have been modified to play pirated games. Our commitment to combat piracy and support safer and more secure gameplay for the more than 20 million members of our Xbox LIVE community remains a top priority. All consumers should know that piracy is illegal, and that modifying their Xbox 360 console to play pirated discs, violates the Xbox LIVE terms of use, will void their warranty and result in a ban from Xbox LIVE. The health of the video game business depends on customers paying for the genuine products and services they receive from manufacturers, retailers, and the third parties that support them.
It's all common sense, really, but then the Major raises a very important point.
This would also be a good time to remind you that the warranty on an Xbox 360 console is not transferrable and if you purchase a used console that has been previously banned, you will not be able to connect to Xbox LIVE.
Since most game retailers don't check to see if a 360 can connect to Xbox Live prior to taking it in used, you very well could wind up with a system that is unable to connect to Xbox Live at all. Luckily most retailers return used consoles without much hassle. Just make sure you check your Xbox Live connection within the return period and you should be fine.

New special offer from play asia:
From the publisher: In 1931, Winston Churchill was hit by a taxi in New York. In the real world, he survived, and went on to rally the British people to fight the Nazi threat. But what if he hadn’t?
It’s from this premise that Fall Of Liberty takes it’s theme - without Churchill’s leadership, Europe and the United Kingdom have fallen to Hitler’s forces. By 1951, using crushing technical superiority, the United States is invaded and defeated by the Third Reich.
With this setting, Fall Of Liberty will be an FPS experience like no other; a game that’s both a World War 2 FPS and something different. Fighting not as a soldier, but a resistance fighter in a United States of America that’s under the rule of a foreign power.
Exclusive to next-generation platforms and PC, Fall Of Liberty breathes new life into the FPS genre.
Never take freedom for granted, fight for it! Turning Point: Fall of Liberty is our weekly special. Available for the unbeatable bargain price of US$ 14.90 only, the Asian version of the game is region free and completely in English.
