Its offering might not yet be quite broad enough to rival some of the more established players in the market, but Microsoft’s MP3player/iPodKiller/portableXbox multimedia device Zune has taken its first tentative steps into the games market with the arrival of a number of 3D games on its digital storefront.
Live and free to download right now are Project Gotham Racing: Ferrari Edition, Lucky Lane Bowling, Vans Sk8: Pool Service, Piano, Checkers, and Audiosurf: Tilt.
Whilst it might seem easy to interpret the move as a strategically important one for Microsoft, the Xbox platform holder has done all it can to down-play the belief that it aspires to one day rival Apple’s vast achievements in the portable games space.
There’s still no firm release date for the Zune HD in the UK.

Microsoft has dismissed supposedly leaked reports that Natal will launch in November 2010 for under £50 as "rumour and speculation".
Leaked details from a behind-closed-doors Microsoft tour are claimed to have revealed MS' plans to sell its hands-free motion sensing camera for under £50 with 14 launch titles available from day one.
"Publisher sources" say the low price point is to encourage "impulse buying", with one saying it could even cost as little as £30. MS is said to be readying 5million units for the release, along with plans for hardware bundles.
A Microsoft rep has told CVG: "Microsoft does not comment on rumour or speculation," following the MCV report earlier today.

Microsoft has confirmed the new Xbox 360 wireless adapter will launch in the UK on November 20 priced at GBP 59.99.
The company confirmed the UK release details to Eurogamer following the news the adapter would go on sale in the US this week for USD 99.99.
Microsoft's new 360 adapter comes with a dual-antenna which supports 802.11a/b/g standards, as well as the new, faster 802/11n necessary for the streaming of 1080p videos via the impending Zune Marketplace.

Microsoft has banned a number of Xbox Live accounts from the online service in a bid to prevent the owners of modded consoles using the service.
The platform holder warned last week it would be suspending access to Xbox Live for anybody who had modified their console in order to play pirated discs, although the action won't prevent people from playing games offline.
Although the company declined to release specific numbers, some reports have placed the amount of accounts banned at 600,000 of the 20 million-plus total.
"We have taken action against a small percentage of consoles have been modified to play pirated game discs," Microsoft told GamesIndustry.biz today. "In line with our commitment to combat piracy and support safer and more secure gameplay for the more than 20 million members of our Xbox Live community, we are suspending these modded consoles from Xbox Live."

Microsoft's motion control technology Project Natal is likely to launch with 14 games on day one, with the peripheral selling at below GBP 50 (USD 83 / EUR 55).
That's according to a report by retail site MCV, which claims Microsoft will be shipping five million units for release. It is expected to sell as a solo peripheral and to be bundled with Xbox 360 hardware.
The motion control technology was first unveiled at E3 this year, with all major publishers pledging support for the system although none have detailed specific titles.
Microsoft has shown off a collection of minigames for the system, and most famously, the Milo & Kate tech demo, created by Lionhead. Fable III will also support the technology.
Project Natal is Microsoft's push to extend the lifecycle of the Xbox 360, with Shane Kim expecting the technology to revolutionise the gaming experience.
Project Natal is expected to launch in November 2010.

The Onion has the WORLD EXCLUSIVE first details of Modern Warfare 3, which developer Infinity Ward is apparently putting the "final touches on." There's so much scrumptious information in the Onion report, it's almost like the respected media source made the whole thing up.
Modern Warfare 3 will blow away its predecessor in the realism department, being the most "true to life" installment of the game ever produced. A "majority" of gameplay will have players hauling equipment, cleaning vehicles, experiencing home sickness and "filling out paperwork." Check out the full report after the break. We're so bummed we weren't invited to the reveal junket, which had journalists sleeping in the Pentagon and being briefed in "the war room" (which actually has a sign: "No Fighting Allowed!").

SEGA has unveiled the European Special Edition of Bayonetta, which launches alongside the standard PS3 and Xbox 360 games on 8th January 2010.
Unlike the glitzy Japanese Collector's Edition, we'll get just one soundtrack disc rather than five.
We'll also get a "lovely artbook", a "nice slipcase" and copy of the game, according to SEGA's Euro blurb.
Bayonetta, an action game crafted by PlatinumGames (MadWorld), has topped the Japanese chart after its first week on sale. Regional magazine Famitsu deemed the chaotic witch-based game worthy of top marks, 40/40.

Previous FPS daddy to be detailed further “in the months head”
With EA pledging to increase it focus on only its most successful IPs, the long-forgotten Medal of Honor series is set to get plenty of love in 2010, according to the publisher.
EA Games label president Frank Gibeau confirmed the news following EA’s recent financial posting, stating: “In the months ahead, you'll hear more about our plans to revitalize core IP, including the Medal of Honor franchise.”
Medal of Honor rose to prominence following the release of PC title Allied Assault. Whilst successes, such as last-gen console outing Frontline, did follow the series struggled after the majority of its core developers went on to form Infinity Ward and subsequently make the blockbuster Call of Duty series.
Medal of Honor made a next-gen comeback in 2007 with Airborne, but a luke-warm critical and commercial performance seemed to have put a temporary halt to future endeavours.

Food palaces Sainsbury's and Morrisons are the cheapest places to buy Modern Warfare 2.
The PS3 or Xbox 360 game can be yours for just £26. Well, in theory, as it's currently out of stock in Sainsbury's.
Your next best bet is either Tesco or Amazon.co.uk, where the console versions cost £32 and the PC version around 30 quid.
Failing that, then GAME and ShopTo are selling Modern Warfare 2 for £42.99/£34.99.
After those you're left with the pack: ASDA, Argos, Gamestation, Play.com, HMV, where the game sells for £44.99/£34.99.
Alternatively, you could try eBay, which is littered with dirt-cheap listings awaiting bidders.
Local store prices may differ. Please let us know if they do, as we love a bit of gossip-slash-news.

Activision's much-anticipated shooter, Modern Warfare 2, has launched in the UK following a premiere in London's Leicester Square.
The event, hosted by Vernon Kaye, took place in the Vue Cinema - a location normally reserved for the opening night of Hollywood blockbusters.
Afterwards, while a handful of people queued at nearby HMV, the publisher hosted an industry bash on Baker Street, with Dizzee Rascal taking to the stage after the countdown to midnight had passed.
The game's launch period has been beset by controversy, with some elements of the UK mainstream press focusing on one scene featuring terrorists at an airport and civilian fatalities, while a selection of retailers broke street dates to sell the game ahead of its official release.
The game is expected to be the biggest-selling title of 2009, with several other publishers pushing releases back from the traditional pre-Christmas hotspot to avoid competing with it.

After the release of the hack for Xenon, Falcon/Opus and Zephyr motherboards, today we get the Free60 JTAG/SMC XeLL Hack for Jasper (v4) motherboards with 16mb NAND chips (so NOT compatible with 256 & 512mb NAND yet)!
This NAND image will boot your Jasper Xbox360 right into XeLL, which allows you to launch linux distros or run libxenon homebrew software, as long as you never upgraded it via the normal MS upgrade procedures to kernel 849x or higher.
From the readme/nfo:
[QUOTE]
Finally the Jasper JTAG Hack is here
This is XELL (compiled 11.09.09) inserted into 6712 Jasper-Kernel.
Don't wonder about the Filesize, its correct like that. It just flashes the beginning of the NAND so your console specific data like MAC adress will stay.
Of course you should have a working backup of your NAND before you proceed.
*** NOTE ***
Only work with 16mb version, a fix may come out.

Morrisons yet to declare its price for shooter; Hints that other supermarkets could drop further
It’s already the most competitive price war the UK games industry has ever seen, but the most dramatic could yet be to follow as the High Street prepares for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to be released at midnight tonight.
Sainsbury’s is currently leading the price charge by chopping a huge £29 off the game’s £55 RRP. Asda will be selling the title for £32 and Tesco for £37.90.
However, Morrisons – a supermarket not afraid of offering games at rock bottom prices – has yet to declare its hand. Store assistants have been telling customers that the final price will be announced later tonight, with one member of staff telling MCV that “the price war may not be over yet”.
There have also been unsubstantiated claims that other chains have been telling customers that they could sell the game for less than their advertised prices thanks to Sainsbury’s aggressive move.

If you've been missing your trivia fix on Xbox Live, you should be happy to learn that Microsoft has dated the second season of its Xbox Live quiz-'em-up, 1 vs 100. Expect the game to return on November 19 at 5:00 PDT, where it'll dish out another 14 weeks' worth of questions -- and this time around, your chance to be The One or a part of The Mob will be determined by one thing: score.
Multiple-choice maniacs will be able to play the new season of 1 vs 100 on a daily basis through themed Extended Play sessions every night, including "Finish the Lyrics," "80's" night and -- yes, we're totally serious -- "Vampires." Finally, a theme night your 12-year-old sister can get behind!

November 9th, 2009, 16:52 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft has confirmed that Twitter, Facebook and Last.fm will all be limited to Xbox Live Gold users aged 18 and over for the time being.
Xbox exec Larry Hryb explained the move was to ensure online safety, but assured users that his team were currently working on an update to the Xbox 360 that will eventually allow parents to control access to the services via the console's Family Settings.
"We made this decision because as it stands now, parents aren’t able to use Family Settings to customise which of these applications their children can access. In order to offer an age-appropriate environment for everyone, we decided to turn off these applications for those Gold members under the age of 18," he said.
"We want to make sure everyone was aware, however, that the development team is working on an update that gives parents the choice of which social applications their children can access.
"This means that Xbox Live members between the ages of 13 and 17 will be able to use Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm as long as their parents approve. The team hope to roll this out several weeks after launch and I will update you on the exact date as it gets closer," detailed Hryb.

The street date and review embargo for Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 have been trampled by consumers and media clamouring to get their hands on the most-anticipated game this year.
After copies of the game began turning up early from online retailers such as The Hut, stores in the UK and the US began selling the game to those that had pre-ordered or were simply determined enough to hunt down a lenient retailer
"This past weekend, GameStop made the decision to break street date and sell reserved copies of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in select markets where other retailers had broken street date," said the retailer in a statement to Kotaku. "Our decision followed many conversations with Activision and was an effort to protect our customer base."
Infinity Ward's Rob Bowling responded that "Any store selling Modern Warfare 2 early is in violation of street date. There are no 'special permissions'," adding "That said, we won't punish players for it."
Determined consumers weren't going to be stopped by any street date, with online forums and social networking sites full of users claiming to buy and play copies of the game.
"Found somewhere selling MW2 surprisingly easily," tweeted Jon Hicks, editor of Official Xbox 360 Magazine in the UK. "They've sold out of Xbox 360 copies, though."
"Just bought a copy of Modern Warfare 2 from a shop with impressive disregard for official release dates," wrote The Guardian's Charlie Brooker on Twitter. "It's the PS3 version. Wanted the X360 but they'd sold out."
"Driving across town for a game that's not technically supposed to be on sale yet," offered Ben Fritz of the LA Times, although he later noted that, "Modern Warfare 2 disc has suddenly become unreadable. Punishment for buying it at a store that broke embargo?"
Bowling pointed out over the weekend that "if you bought a retail copy on PC, you can play it on 11.10.09," but that hasn't stopped console owners completing the game and posting impressions across the web.
Activision has tried to keep a tight lid on the specialist press, with journalists in the UK having to play the game in a controlled environment and reviews embargoed until 8:01am on Tuesday – despite the game launching at midnight tonight.
But full video walkthroughs of the entire single-player game have already appeared online, leaving many to question the relevance of the publisher's controlled PR and marketing approach.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 officially goes on sale tomorrow morning, with retailers such as HMV, GAME and Gamestation opening for midnight events this evening.

News via http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/...FpeyBGdGIN.php
Kushan wrote a nice little article on #FW@EFnet summarizing all kinda info we have about the current (still ongoing) Console Live Ban Wave:
[QUOTE]
- What does this mean for you and what can you do about it?
Firstly, and most obviously, you cannot connect to Xbox Live on this console any more. This means no more game updates (aka title updates), XBLA games, marketplace content, netflix/sky player and so on. There is no way around this, all online capabilities are now disabled PERMANENTLY.
In all likelihood, your gamertag has NOT BEEN BANNED. When your gamertag gets banned, Microsoft sends you an email detailing why, if you have not recieved this email then your profile should be ok, to a certain extent.
Hard Drive installs are now disabled on the banned console. This means any disk-based games you have will no longer play off of the hard drive. If you attempt to play a game, it will tell you that it was installed on a different 360 and needs to be deleted/installed again. When you delete the game and attempt to install it, you are given a message telling you that it is not supported. There is no way to fix this, that functionality is simply gone from the banned 360.
The hard drive itself is left untouched - you can place it in another 360, even an unbanned one, and it will still work just fine. You do NOT need to reformat it to regain any kind of functionality. Any installed games will need to be reinstalled for the console you want to play them on. This is normal behaviour and happens when swapping HDDs on unbanned/legit 360's.
Windows Media Centre functionality is disabled. It is still possible to stream video/music content via the video library.
Your Gamertag may be corrupted. This does not mean your gamertag has been banned, you can recover it using any live-capable 360, however ANY ACHIVEMENTS YOU HAVE EARNED SINCE BEING BANNED WILL BE LOST. Your gamertag will be corrupted EVERY SINGLE TIME it is used on a banned console. This means you cannot use your banned console to play backups offline just to get achievements - it wont work, the second you put your profile back on a good 360, it will be corrupted and all progress lost. There is no way around this.
The same applies to game saves - if you access a game save on a banned 360, it too will be corrupted when accessed on a legit/unbanned 360! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! There is no way around this, either.
Your XBLA games and DLC will still be valid, however to play them on a different 360 you will need to be signed into Xbox Live. This is normal behaviour on unbanned/legit 360's as well. They may be corrupted and have to be re-downloaded if you attempt to access them on a banned 360. You can transfer all of your downloaded content to a new 360 here: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/sy...on/default.htm however note that you can only do it once every 12 months.
So, in summary:
Your Banned 360:
* Cannot go on Xbox Live
* Cannot install games to the HDD
* Cannot use Windows Media Centre extender
* Cannot be used to get achievements from backups without corrupting your profile
You cannot do anything about this, short of buying a new 360.
There may be more functionality disabled than mentioned here, things are still being discovered.
- So what caused my ban?
There are MANY theories as to what is causing so many consoles to get banned this time, however as of yet there is nothing concrete, just a lot of circumstantial evidence and speculation. Please do not add to this, a full investigation is under-way.
c4eva, the main guy behind iXtreme, had this to say:
<+c4eva> fw itself not detectable
<+c4eva> suspect they are going hard on warez releases and incorrect use of abgx!
He also added the following:
<+c4eva> just to let you know that im looking into the current ban wave. I am currently running several brand new xboxs on live! These xboxs are in various configs. All are running ixtreme 1.61
<+c4eva> One is running original discs, another is running on xbl (no discs) , another is running a backup from my region!
<+c4eva> until tests are completed, no eta on liteon fw!
When we know more, YOU'LL no more, so please do not ask for updates!
A full transcript is available here - http://pastebin.ca/1660777
Remember, if you really want to blame someone, blame the person that decided to modify your 360 in the first place - most likey, that would be you ;

In an email exchange earlier today, Microsoft indirectly admitted that Xbox 360s are receiving an updated tamper-resistant warranty sticker. From the company:
"We continually work on the security of our devices, including updates to the tamper seal. Beyond that, we have no further comment."
They also added that Steve Ballmer has always been a huge fan of stickers, having one of the most expansive collections in the world.
