A new record has been set for the number of Xbox Live users online at one time.
"We just hit a new Xbox Live record: Over TWO MILLION people connected to the service at once," wrote Major Nelson on his Twitter page.
Shacknews pointed out that the release of Modern Warfare 2 might have had something to do with it, as nearly a million people were playing the game on Live yesterday.

European Xbox boss Chris Lewis has said Microsoft is "unapologetic" about banning a huge number of gamers from Xbox Live for modifying their consoles.
"If it's clear someone is downloading pirated copies or have modified their Xbox in some way that will allow them to download games that they haven't purchased legitimately and yes we lock that account down and we're unapologetic about that," he told Sky News.
Although Microsoft has refused to say how many people have been banned, reports, such as this one from the BBC, have suggested it could be anything between 600,000 and a million accounts.
The platform holder simply said the move affected a "small percentage" of the more than 20 million people who use Xbox Live, and added that it only banned consoles, not accounts, so it is possible to recover an account to a replacement console.
"All consumers should know that piracy is illegal, and that modifying their Xbox 360 console to play pirated discs, violates the Xbox Live terms of use, will void their warranty and result in a ban from Xbox Live," Microsoft said last week when it first warned of the upcoming mass banning.

Ubisoft's Xbox Live-like community toolset, UPlay, is set to launch next week alongside priority release Assassin's Creed II, according to the publisher's CEO Yves Guillemot.
The system, first announced at E3 this year, will encourage gamers to play Ubisoft titles, as the more they play, the more rewards they'll be in-line for.
"We are creating the equivalent of an Xbox Live system, but for Ubisoft games, where when you play you will be able to have a kind of mileage system - that you have for planes or hotels," he explained.
"The more you play, the more free goods you will be able to have. You will be able to gain competencies and points that will allow you to be part of the Ubisoft community.
"That will be launched with Assassin's Creed II and is just the beginning, but all our games will use this system, and that will allow us to get a lot closer to our customers."
The move is part of the company's three-pronged approach to increasing its market share from 6 per cent to 10 per cent, the CEO detailed, speaking at the BMO Capital Markets Digital Entertainment Conference earlier this week.

Microsoft has confirmed that the Xbox 360 has sold over 10 million units in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region.
The news comes as Microsoft prepares a new dashboard update, which will add Twitter, Facebook, Last.fm and streaming HD movies to the Xbox Live service from November 17.
"European consumers are very discerning and demand a connected entertainment experience," said Chris Lewis, vice president Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft Europe. "That’s why we focused on providing content that is right and relevant for them and entertainment beyond just gaming to movies, music and social networking.
"We have delivered on this promise and next week will bring real innovation into the living room through instant streaming high definition movies, connecting with friends on Facebook and Twitter and a personalised music channel. Together, this represents a real shift in the way people are entertained every day," he added.
According to Microsoft, the Xbox 360 is the only home console to achieve year-on-year growth across the EMEA region.
"Xbox 360 continues to pull ahead of the competition when it comes to delivering on a complete home entertainment experience and we think that Xbox Live currently is about 12 to 18 months ahead of its main rival PlayStation Network when it comes to offering service and content beyond traditional games," said Martin Olausson, director of Digital Media Research at Strategy Analytics.
"By introducing innovative new services and content such as Natal, instant streaming of full 1080P HD video, and integrating social media features such as Twitter and Facebook, Xbox will likely attract a wider audience than its rivals and is in a great position to maximize sales in the next few years."

Microsoft has released a statement in reaction to the NPD Group's US videogame industry sales results for the month of October, boasting that its Xbox 360 console is the hardware leader in year-over-year unit sales growth.
According to the statement, the 250,000 Xbox 360 units sold in October contributed to a 7 per cent increase in year-over-year sales for the January through October period.
"Xbox 360 remains the only console showing year-to-date growth, and consumers spent USD 289 million on Xbox 360 hardware, software and accessories in October, more than any other platform."
Microsoft also revealed that over 2 million users were simultaneously logged on to its Xbox Live service during the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which is a new record for the service.
The company is also claiming that third-party software for the Xbox 360 - led by NBA 2K10, Borderlands, FIFA Soccer 10, and Brutal Legend - generated USD 151 million for the month, more than any other system.

Sitting on Time Magazine's 50 Best Inventions of 2009 amongst notables like the world's first AIDS vaccine (still in trials) and meat farms seems like an awkward place for Microsoft's Project Natal. But that's exactly where it resides, paired with glowing praise for its boundary-breaking implications.
"Since time immemorial ... one barrier that has stood between gamers and total Tron-like immersion in their video games has been the controller," the piece posits, going on to say that Natal will break that barrier by allowing the player one-to-one access between the game and the game's controls. "You move your hand, and the Master Chief (or whoever) moves his hand. It's that simple. And that cool." Though we're excited for the many prospects Project Natal seems to offer, we're a bit more intrigued by teleportation.

November 12th, 2009, 21:25 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft's ban hammer may have whacked as many as one million Xbox 360 owners following a new wave of cracking down on modified consoles.
That figure comes from InformationWeek who reports on the bans that effectively lock out consoles, not just Xbox Live gamertags, from playing games online.
Microsoft spokesperson Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb warned Xbox 360 owners of the banning plan earlier this month, saying that Microsoft was "actively banning consoles from Xbox LIVE that have been modified to play pirated games."
"Our commitment to combat piracy and support safer and more secure gameplay for the more than 20 million members of our Xbox LIVE community remains a top priority," read a statement issued by the company at the time. "All consumers should know that piracy is illegal, and that modifying their Xbox 360 console to play pirated discs, violates the Xbox LIVE terms of use, will void their warranty and result in a ban from Xbox LIVE.
"The health of the video game business depends on customers paying for the genuine products and services they receive from manufacturers, retailers, and the third parties that support them."
These bannings, which were preceded by similar actions alongside the release of Halo 3 ODST, hit prior to the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
When reached for comment, a Microsoft spokesperson issued the following statement.
"While we don't comment on specific numbers, we have taken action against consoles that have been modified and were used to play pirated game discs. In line with our commitment to combat piracy, and support safer and more secure gameplay for the more than 20 million members of our Xbox LIVE community, we are banning these modded consoles from Xbox LIVE."

Craig Fairbrass, who voices Ghost in some cheap little shooter that came out this week we can't remember the name of, has hinted that he may be called upon to supply dialogue for new content.
Chatting with Eurogamer on the camo carpet at the Modern Warfare 2 (ah!) launch premiere in Leicester Square on Monday night, the hulking British actor, who played Gaz in the original MW, revealed how excited his kids were about his character featuring in a DC Comics series, adding: "They're talking to me about other little spin-offs. I'm just really, really pleased and happy to be a part of it."
Pressed on whether there were more game roles on the horizon, he teased: "They're talking to me about doing some other little bits for this. It's lovely being in Los Angeles being part of this. It's amazing."
On the reaction to the controversial "No Russian" airport scene in the game, he said: "You can understand that. At the end of the day it is a game, for adults not for children, so as long as you're responsible and do the right thing."
Meanwhile, fellow British actor Billy Murray, who reprises his role as Captain Price in the sequel, was dismayed to learn of UK politicians debating the game's content in Parliament. He told us: "They should be arguing about other things, looking after our country and getting us out of Iraq, shouldn't they?"

Social media update to arrive on Xbox Live next Tuesday
Microsoft has confirmed that Twitter and Facebook integration will be coming to Xbox Live on November 17th.
The update was announced at E3 and brings popular social media such as Twitter, Facebook and Last FM to the Xbox 360 Dashboard.
The release date was confirmed to Fast Company, who spoke to Xbox Live’s general manager Marc Whitten, who said these additions are “turning Xbox and Live into this rich media portal that continuously surfaces the most engaging things to do in the living room”.
He added: “We look at things like Facebook and Twitter as amazing social experiences, but also entertainment. We didn’t want to copy and paste from the PC.”

November 12th, 2009, 18:11 Posted By: wraggster
Chart-Track director Dorian Bloch has told GamesIndustry.biz that UK retailers "have been at the forefront of data capture for decades," and that he's confident that yesterday's 1.23 million Modern Warfare 2 sales numbers are accurate.
He was responding to Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter, who cast doubts that the numbers were correct, suggesting Chart-Track had counted pre-orders before they had passed from retailer to consumer.
"UK retailers have been at the forefront of electronic data capture for decades, which in turn allows us to capture daily sales from 99 per cent of retailers on our panel," said Bloch. "That's over 6000 retail outlets plus all the etailers - currently 25 different store fronts."
Bloch detailed that pre-orders are only counted as they physically change hands on the High Street, or in the case of online sales – as they are shipped from warehouse to consumer.
"Every retailer on our panel supplies Electronic Point of Sale data. In the specific case of pre-orders through retailers with High Street stores, we can and do pick these up sometimes months before a product actually launches and these are set up by the retailer to report as a specific retailer code. When the product goes live we begin to track sales on the actual barcode for that product, along with the actual selling price for every single transaction."
"In the specific case of online retailers and pre-orders, the moment they ship a product it registers as a sale in the daily transaction files we are sent. Online retailers have to ship the product in advance in order to hit the street date, so we will pick up actual sales (shipped to the customer) prior to the day one release. These are re-dated to day one."
Bloch added that he expects Chart-Track will update the day one figures next week, at the same time ELSPA publishes full-week sales for the game.

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter is doubtful that Chart-Track's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 sales figures are correct, and that the game did not sell 1.23 million units on its first day.
He was speaking following estimates that the game sold seven million units worldwide on day one – a number arrived at by Broadpoint AMTech analyst Ben Schachter, who used the Chart-Track figures to extrapolate global sales numbers.
"Seven million is therefore a very reasonable estimate, if we accept that the UK figure is accurate. My guess is that it’s not," Pachter told VG247.
"I don’t know how anyone could aggregate UK sales that fast. I’d say it’s far more likely that the game sold no more than 5 million on day one (my bias is 4 million), and that it won’t hit 7 million until the end of the weekend," he said.
"However, you can’t argue with 'facts' such as Chart-Track reports of first day sales. I have a feeling that the figure includes all pre-orders, but not necessarily those units actually picked up on day one."
GfK Chart-Track and ELSPA announced the UK sales figures yesterday, stating that the game grossed around GBP 47 million on its first day on sale, beating the previous day-one record holder GTAIV, which sold an estimated 631,000 units and grossed GBP 27.2 million.

Kotaku has fielded many complaints from PlayStation 3 users that their version of Modern Warfare 2 has been ridden with bugs. Trophies weren't registering. Friends couldn't be invited. Word from Infinity Ward is that a new patch corrects some problems.
From the Twitter feed of IW creative strategist Robert Bowling:
PS3 Status: Patch successful. Trophy Unlocks on PS3 now available in Single Player & Spec Ops. Adding more servers to meet MP demand.
We've got requests in to IW and Activision for more details about bugs PS3 gamers have been reporting. Let us know if the latest patch fixes things.

It took us a tick to get our Zune HD loaded up with those new 3D games that were released this morning, but we thought you might want to check out a quick hands-on. That Tegra chip is no joke -- the graphics in PGR: Ferrari Edition are easily on par with the PSP and quite possibly better, with intricate textures, high-quality reflections, and smooth framerates. The other games aren't nearly as intense, but they're just as smooth. Best of all? They're free -- although you will have to look at a Zune ad while they load. Not the worst tradeoff in the world, but we'd love to see what paid app developers could do if Microsoft would open this beast up. Check the video after the break.

The BBC reports that Microsoft has disconnected approximately 600,000 Xbox users from Xbox Live because the devices they are using have been modified, either with software or with new chips, to play pirated games. 'Microsoft confirmed that it had banned a "small percentage" of the 20 million Xbox Live users worldwide. Microsoft said that modifying an Xbox 360 console 'violates' the service's 'terms of use' and would result in a player being disconnected.
