The UK government intelligence agency in charge of signals analysis and information for the country's armed forces, GCHQ (Government Communications Headquarters), is to promote various career opportunities within the organisation on Microsoft's Xbox Live service.
The campaign will be run by GCHQ's marketing agency, TMP Worldwide, and will run for six weeks targeting 18-34 year olds, according to Marketing.
GCHQ is no stranger to using videogames as a medium for getting its career opportunities message out to people, with a similar in-game campaign run in 2007 with Ubisoft's Splinter Cell title increasing traffic to its website by over 500 per cent.

Boutique law firm AbingtonIP is "investigating" what it considers the "convenient" recent Xbox Live bannings. The firm posits that the "tens of thousands" of banned Xbox Live subscribers who used modded consoles deserve recompense due to the timing of the action. The firm believes that said timing -- i.e., after Halo 3: ODST and shortly before Modern Warfare 2's releases -- was executed to net Microsoft as much money as possible out of potential Xbox Live subscribers before banning the modded devices. The class action lawsuit would attempt to obtain a refund for the prorated sums left on the banned Xbox Live subscriptions.
According to Joystiq legal columnist Mark Methenitis' analysis: "To me, this certainly sounds a lot like a cash grab directed at a company with deep pockets, but perhaps there are more facts than they are letting on." He explains that a user savvy enough to have a modded console would also know not to connect it to Live without "serious risk." Methenitis concludes, "If, in fact, Microsoft is inducing people to buy a service only to terminate them, then there's certainly a deceptive business practice concern. But this seems far more cut and dry than that."

Company issues score of new Natal-related job vacancies
A surge of new Microsoft Game Studios recruitment ads have given a clearer picture of Microsoft’s ambitions for Natal game development.
Ten days ago Develop reported that Microsoft had listed 25 job vacancies for Natal development and its Halo division, 343 Industries.
In the intervening days, Microsoft has published another 29 new job vacancies.
Fourteen of those are centred on Natal game development, with another six linked to 343 Industries. One of the new listings, however, is for a lead producer for various Epic Games properties. More on that can be found here.
Microsoft has in the past few weeks conducted secret Natal demos in order to drive development support for its 3D camera peripheral.
The move comes ahead of the planned November 2010 launch for the innovative device.

Microsoft has announced that it will hold another Xtival "online party weekender" between 27 and 29 November.
Previous Xtivals, in which gigs are streamed and Xbox Live Silver members get a rare chance to see what they are missing, have proved a big draw, with last year's one, according to Microsoft, attracting 1.5 million visitors.
Next weekend's Xtival will feature a dance stage showing footage of Tiesto on his current US tour, plus interviews with the all-conquering DJ. If you tune in, you'll also be able to download excerpts from the forthcoming Metallica live CD, a video EP from The Prodigy and classic gigs from Run DMC and ZZ Top.
The cinema stage, meanwhile, will feature a 4-minute trailer from Avatar and, as ever in an Xtival, Silver members will be able to play against Gold subscribers while the festival is on. Plus there will be freebie goodies available like winter gear for avatars and Xtival-themed backgrounds up for grabs.

Hackers have uncovered a number of secret Modern Warfare 2 gameplay modes hidden in the source code.
'Arena', 'Global Thermal Nuclear War', 'One Flag' and 'VIP' have been uncovered, all of which are unfinished and three of which contain the phrase "fix after ship", suggesting that they could eventually be destined for download content.
Raiders Game Net gives us a run down:
"Arena = Round based 1 flag gametype. Basically a flag spawns in the middle, and both teams have to capture it. It's similar to gtnw, except it's the round based (one life) version. A team wins if they capture the flag or kill everyone on the other side.
"GTNW = Global Thermal Nuclear War = Basically the "nuke" is in the middle of the map, and both teams have to try and get it and set it off. It's a respawn gametype. You have to first "capture" the nuke, similar to capturing a flag on domination. If there are more axis players inside the capture zone then allied players, then they will capture the nuke and vice versa. It doesn't speed up the capturing if more players on your team are inside the zone. Once you have 'captured' the nuke - it can only be activated if your team score is above 100. You get 1 point for every enemy you kill, and 1 point each time you "capture" the nuke. So if you go and hold the nuke point, you'll "capture" it, then if you keep control if it, you'll slowly gain more points every few seconds. The team who activates the nuke, wins. If the timelimit is reached, then the team with a higher score wins.
"
ONEFLAG = Basically round based CTF with 1 flag, so Axis defend while Allies attack. If round time limit is reached the defenders win, if flag is captured the attackers win. If defenders are all killed, attackers win, and if attackers are all killed defenders win. Basically it's like retrieval.
"VIP = Basically it's like assasination. It uses the defenders CTF flag spot as the 'extraction zone' - and picks a random vip... the vip spawns with riot shield and deagle, and also has armor vest and final stand. Once the vip reaches the extraction zone, they have to press use to call in an extraction pickup. This takes 45 seconds, and after that time, the attackers win. The defenders win if they kill the vip or if they kill everyone on the other team. Attackers win if they kill all the defenders, or extract the vip."

Microsoft's recent actions against Xbox Live users with modded consoles has led to an unexpected surge in second-hand sales of the Xbox 360.
Online sites such as Craigslist and eBay show dozens of listings for consoles variously described as "banned", "not modded" or "100% working offline". The average cost for a banned standalone console has settled at around GBP 50 (compared to a retail price of GBP 160 for a new Xbox 360 Arcade).
Earlier in the month Microsoft began a large scale attempt to ban modded consoles, many of which could be used to play pirated software, from Xbox Live. The bans remove the console's ability to go online but leave it still able to function offline.
Although Microsoft categorised the number of bans as a "small percentage" of the 20 million strong Xbox Live community, unconfirmed reports have placed the numbers as high as 600,000 or even 1 million users.

The censored version of Left 4 Dead 2 released in Australia after the country's ratings board refused it classification has been slated by users.
According to a review by IGN, the game has been "butchered" in order to remove elements such as wound detail, decapitations and dead bodies.
The resulting game is a "hollow shell of a game," according to the review, that "isn't worth the plastic the disc is printed on."
Developer Valve endured a lengthy process of submissions to get the game released in Australia, but its appeal was refused last month by the Classification Review Board.
"It was the Review Board’s opinion that there was insufficient delineation between the depiction of general zombie figures and the human figures, as opposed to the clearly fictional ‘infected’ characters," it concluded.
In Australia, the maximum age rating for a game is 15+ and games that don't meet that criteria are refused classification.

Hundreds of Xboxs have appeared on online marketplaces such as eBay and Craigslist in the wake of the mass Xbox live bans.
Over the past week Microsoft has banned nearly one million users from the online gaming service after finding that they had modified their consoles to play pirated games.
Since the ban is connected to the console rather than a gamer's online account, many modified Xboxs have appeared online being sold by banned users.
eBay has issued a warning to users on its website to be wary of buying consoles in the wake of Microsoft's move.
In a post on the website's guide section, it said: 'If you are looking to buy an Xbox 360 on eBay in the near future, ask the seller if it has been banned from Xbox Live and be sure to pay by PayPal in case they lie. If you do get a banned console, start a PayPal claim.'
Microsoft has said that all bans are permanent to the console and no affected units will be permitted back onto Xbox Live on any account.

We’re sure you’ve heard about Xbox 360s facing an other round of bans from Xbox Live last week. It seems that living in a hole, or even in Grenora, North Dakota couldn’t help you escape hearing this from every news source possible. Apparently, this has caused a slew of banned consoles to go up for sale in a buyer-beware quagmire. This is a joke in several ways; didn’t the hardware problems of the machine already make the used market risky enough? Now consumers will be even more wary, losing game sales because less people are buying used consoles.
If you have just the right kernel, and a copy of your CPU key, and a second unbanned Xbox 360, you may be able to reactivate your machine. But how many people have those things available to them? Undoubtedly an Xbox 360’s desirability is greatly diminished if Xbox Live is removed from the equation. This is something Nintendo could learn from when it comes to the Wii (no online multiplayer with New Super Mario Bros Wii?… Really?). So whether you are the one who was banned, or you decided/were tricked in to purchasing a banned console, what are you going to do with it now that online play is out of the picture?
We’ve seen the console emulating SNES games and even XBMC run with the help of Ubuntu. Leave us a comment and tell us if you are planning to just go without Xbox Live, use the machine as a desktop running Ubuntu, or spearhead the effort to repurpose this powerful (and flawed) hardware platform. Will you go out and capitalize on cheaper hardware, or have you been burnt by the grim reality of a crippled rig?

Microsoft is inviting Xbox Live Silver members to try out the newly-launched Facebook, Twitter, and Last.FM for the Xbox 360 during the upcoming Free Xbox Live Weekend.
Between the new social features, the upcoming season of 1 vs 100, and Halo Waypoint, there's a lot happening on Xbox Live that you can't participate in without an Xbox Live Gold membership. Whether you are broke, indifferent, or simply averse to paying $50 a month to play games online, you'll be able to give these new features a spin when Microsoft hosts Free Xbox Live Weekends later this month. Everyone except Europe will have full access to all Gold membership benefits from November 20th to the 23rd.
Europeans have to wait a little longer, but their weekend is longer as well, running from November 25th through the 30th.

Sony's said to be launching its PS3 motion controllers sometime early next year and, while that company isn't always the most reliable when it comes to shipping things on time, Microsoft must surely want to get its competition out sooner than later. Last we heard, though, the 360 Natal attachment wouldn't be ready to compete until next holiday season -- but would at least sell for an attractive "impulse buy" price point as low as $50. Now Microsoft's Neil Thompson (the same guy who told us Xbox2Go was a lie) is shattering your 2010 wish list already, denying last week's report and saying the company has "a lot of things" left to figure out before its release. Something tells us MS will handle this a little better than the Wireless N launch debacle.

Modern Warfare 2 has shattered entertainment sales records to become the biggest launch in history, according to Activision figures just released.
With a five-day worldwide sell through that has grossed USD 550 million, the game has beat all previous first and five-day entertainment box office, book and game records.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince held the record for the highest grossing film over five days, making USD 394 million. And Grand Theft Auto IV was previously the biggest selling game, with sales totalling USD 500 million over its first five days.
"In just five days of sell through, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has become the largest entertainment launch in history and a pop culture phenomenon," said Activision CEO Bobby Kotick.
"The title's success redefines entertainment as million of consumers have chosen to play Modern Warfare 2 at unprecedented levels rather than engage in other forms of media."
Additionally, Microsoft released Xbox Live stats for the title, revealing that more than 5.2 million multiplayer hours were notched up in its first day alone.
On the same day, 360 users also unlocked more than 11 million achievements.
Despite the game's massive success though, Activision added it remained cautious about the US and global economy going forward and that consumer spending remains a "significant concern".

via CNET UK
Sixty per cent of Xbox 360s have kicked the red-ringed bucket, compared to 16 per cent of PS3s and just 6 per cent of Wiis, according to our survey on the reliability of games consoles in the UK.
CNET UK commissioned the survey last month -- and the results don't reflect well on the Microsoft console. Some 1,128 UK-based console owners responded, of whom 562 owned Xbox 360s, 473 owned PS3s and 591 had Wiis (some owned more than one).
Of those Xbox owners who have bought their Xbox since January 2008, 34 per cent report that their Xboxes have broken -- still double the lifetime failure rate of the PS3. Microsoft introduced new components in late 2007 and early 2008, when Bill Gates boasted of the Xbox's newfound "incredible reliability". Our survey shows that while the console has improved, it's still far from reaching Gates' goal of being the "most reliable video game box out there".
Only 25 per cent of disappointed 360 owners had owned the console for more than 18 months before it broke, with 47 per cent reporting a failure inside a year. Seventy two per cent returned their Xbox to Microsoft, who extended the 360's warranty to three years after the console's problems became widely known. Fifteen per cent sought their own solution, such as repairing it themselves or giving up and throwing it under a bed. One miserable gamer reported, "I can't afford to get (the Xbox 360) fixed as it is out of warranty, so it sits in the spare room all lonely."
Many 360 owners report the console breaking more than once. Of those whose console has broken at least once, 32 per cent say it has broken twice, and 19 per cent say it has broken three times or more. One person said their 360 "was repaired six times before (being) refunded by Microsoft".
Of those who have bought a 360 in the last two years, only for it to break, 29 per cent say it has broken more than once.
This was a self-selecting survey, so it doesn't represent a random sample of console owners. It's likely that people whose consoles have had problems are more motivated to fill out the survey, but the results are still interesting when you compare the Xbox 360 to its competitors.
The console makers are not in the habit of releasing such information, so this kind of survey is the best guess we have. We think the sample size and spread of console ownership do give it some credence, however, and it tallies with the anecdotal experience of many gamers we've heard from.
The survey did not distinguish between the Xbox 360 Arcade and Elite versions, which are very similar, or the PS3 and PS3 Slim, which has only just been introduced.
A spokesman for Microsoft said, "The vast majority of Xbox 360 owners are having an outstanding experience with their Xbox 360, and they invest in our platform more than any other.
"On July 5, 2007 Microsoft acknowledged an unacceptable number of repairs and took unprecedented steps to take care of all of our customers, providing a three year extended warranty on consoles experiencing the three flashing red lights error. We have continued to make improvements to the console and make customer service a top priority should someone require repair."
Has your console broken? How did you get it fixed -- or is it pining away on top of a wardrobe? Did you receive good customer service? Tell us your experiences in the comments.

via Eurogamer
Mad Catz has told Eurogamer that its Wireless-N Gaming Adapter could not and would not be blocked by Microsoft, despite having the same functionality for a lower price.
"Let me make a couple of things very very very clear," explained Alex Verrey, Mad Catz spokesperson. "A lot of sources have been commenting that Microsoft are going to come and lock it out and stop it working or whatever. Well it doesn't work like that because it plugs into the Ethernet port of the Xbox 360 or indeed the PS3 - both consoles pick it up as a wired connection.
"There's absolutely no way that Microsoft could conceivably lock it out," he said. "They can't lock it out and nor would they want to."
Verrey made it very very very clear that this is "not a licensed Microsoft product" but said the platform holder is one of Mad Catz' treasured partners.
"Microsoft is a licensee of ours. We would never ever do anything to put Microsoft's nose out of joint as it were, and we would never look to battle against them in any way by producing a cheap knock-off product," explained Verrey.
Mad Catz' Wireless-N network adapter costs £49.99 whereas Microsoft's official Wireless-N adapter costs £59.99. The former is out now; the latter will be released on Friday 20th November.
"I'm not prepared to publicly come out and say, "Yes it's better than..." added Verrey. "It uses Wireless-N technology so they both essentially do the same thing.
"We think ours has got a series of features that you might not find on others including the official Microsoft one. Ours for instance is compatible with PS3 and other devices and ours comes with a one-meter Ethernet cable, which means you don't have to have it tethered to your machine if you want to move it around."
Verrey wouldn't comment on why no one else has done this before, and said Mad Catz tries simply to stay on the "cusp" of new technology and so has been researching this Wireless-N adaptor "for a while". "In fact, we didn't even know that Microsoft were bringing out their Wireless-N adapter at the same time," promised Verrey.
He went on to say that the Modern Warfare 2 range of Mad Catz goods had sold very well, and that there will be the brand new Street Fighter IV Round 2 Arcade FightStick here before Christmas, featuring new artwork by Udon painters.
The peripheral maker has some top secret products in development too. "We are going to be announcing some significant new products that we know are just going to blow you guys away. They're going to be announced at CES [in January]," Verrey told us.
"Can I give you guys a hint? Um... I think fighting fans are going to be happy. We've got some brand new licences that we're looking forward to talking about and that's all I'm going to say at the moment because I'm going to get myself into trouble."
It's not motion-sensing boxing gloves is it?
"Ahhh haa haa hahahaaaa," bellowed Verrey. "I'm not going to say a word, Rob - you're not going to be able to cajole that out of me!" [Get a room. - Ed]

Microsoft has distanced itself from reports last week on alleged launch details for Project Natal, claiming they "weren't accurate" and insisting there remain "a lot of things to get decided".
The comments came last night at the London launch of Microsoft's Xbox 360 autumn update, which launched today, bringing Twitter, Facebook, Last.fm and Zune Video Marketplace to Live users.
Asked if reports on pricing and shipments for its motion control technology were correct, Xbox UK boss Neil Thompson replied: "No. They weren't accurate, they were rumours. I've got nothing more to say about it."
Pressed on whether Microsoft had decided internally on pricing, he revealed: "We're still very much in the baking on Natal and there's a lot of things to get decided on it."
Reports claimed Microsoft was aiming to release the Natal camera next autumn at or below £50, with 14 games and five million units available on day one.
Speaking to Eurogamer at the same event, head of Europe Chris Lewis added: "Now you know better than to listen to that stuff! We will announce in good time."
But Lewis was keen to talk up the work going on behind the scenes. "As you can imagine, we've shared this technology with our worldwide development partners now for some time, and the pace with which they're developing the kind of experiences is just amazing," he said.
"I'm not going to be specific about what they might be, I will say however we're committed to ensure those experiences are unique, compelling and very exciting right from the outset. That has to happen and that will happen.
