ELSPA has awarded Modern Warfare 2 its highest accolade in the form of a diamond sales award.
The Xbox 360 version of the game has become just the 16th to receive the award, which is given to games selling over one million in the UK.
Modern Warfare 2 remained at the top of the all-formats chart for a third week this week, and its first week sales totalled over 1.7 million units.
While the 360 game has sold over one million since release, triggering the diamond award, the PlayStation 3 game has been given a double platinum award for sales of over 600,000.
Other games that share the diamond award include Dr Kawashima's Brain Training, New Super Mario Bros, Wii Play, Mario Kart Wii and Halo 3, as well as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on Xbox 360.

Not (un)lucky enough to attend the man-filled E3 expo in Los Angeles next year? Well according to an online survey all the games, sounds and huge ankle blisters of the annual event will soon be making their way to Xbox Live (well, maybe not the last one)
The online survery asks you to imagine "that interactive, online versions of E3, BlizzCon, GamesCon, ComicCon and every other major video game convention were made available through Xbox Live."
The questionnaire explains that the "Virtual Video Game Convention Service" would be free on Xbox Live and let players party up with mates and walk around a virtual show floor using their Avatar.
Booths from all the major gaming companies would be included, it says, and participants could check out videos, trailers, developer interviews and even game demos and betas if they were available. Keynote addresses would also be streamed live.
Now, all MS has left to do is find a way to teleport booth babes, free lanyards and copious amounts of beer into your living room and the E3 experience is nearly complete.

Though the BBC iPlayer is already available on the Wii and PS3 overseas, it seems a disagreement between the television corporation and Microsoft will keep the platform off of the Xbox 360 for the time being. According to a recent Telegraph article, sources close to the BBC's Future Media and Technology department claim that Microsoft's desire to make the iPlayer a Gold Subscriber-exclusive feature is "incompatible with the BBC's public service remit."
An unnamed BBC representative reportedly explained, "this does not fit with the BBC's model and Microsoft will not budge at the moment. It is really frustrating for those involved on the BBC side who want to make sure iPlayer is rolled out on as many popular entertainment platforms as possible." We've contacted Microsoft to hear the other half of the story.

Though [Will] is more of a PC guy, he needed a Mac to run the software he needed for his line of work (Final Cut). Making the best of an unfortunate situation, he constructed this hackintosh inside the case of Microsoft’s original gaming console – the Xbox. [Will] did a good job at documenting the build.
[Paul], who seems a bit more fond of Apple’s technology, still felt as though his hardware could use an overhaul. So he gutted his G4 Cube and dropped in an Intel Atom 330 based system to get his ultimate HTPC. To make controlling the 1 TB beast more fun, he hooked up a Wiimote through DarwiinRemote.

According to Microsoft, nearly two million Xbox Live users logged into Facebook through the console's new built-in social media applications. Based on a vague estimate provided by Microsoft, it appears that around ten percent of all Xbox Live Gold accounts used the application within its first week of availability; however, it's possible many of those users only logged in to see the new feature in action.
Microsoft also stated the addition of Last.fm -- a music streaming service currently only available for US and UK gamers -- prompted nearly one million new profile activations. In its first week, Last.fm users streamed "more than 120 million minutes" of music to their Xbox 360 consoles. If we've learned one thing from these numbers, it's that people love to click on shiny new boxes.

Studio head talks of “doing something different” with standard fight controls
Rare studio head Mark Betteridge has strongly indicated that a new Killer Instinct game could be developed for Natal.
Betteridge told Multiformat games magazine Games TM that the studio wants to break new ground if it is to develop a new Killer Instinct title.
“Street Fighter IV looked great and they’ve done a great job, and I’m a big fan of those products, but with KI we want to do something different rather than go back into that arena,” he said.
“It’s about timing, and it’s about the opportunity creatively and gameplay-wise that it would offer… I think it’s about doing something different than with a conventional controller.”
George Andreas, head of design at Rare, went on to amplify Betteridge’s suggestions, after claiming that the studio would focus on making a Killer Instinct game for “the masses”.
Rumours of a new Killer Instinct project have floated for over ten years. No such projects have materialised.

Stellar sales of Modern Warfare 2 have helped Activision to nudge its Call of Duty franchise through the USD 3 billion revenues mark, the publisher has announced.
According to a statement released today, the six titles in the series have now sold over 55 million units between them, with the latest instalment smashing entertainment launch records and taking USD 550 million in its first five days on sale.
The data, based on estimates from The NPD Group, GfK Chart-Track and internal information has made it one of the "greatest entertainment franchises of all time," said Activision Blizzard CEO Robert Kotick.
"If you consider the number of hours our audiences are engaged in playing Call of Duty games, it is likely to be one of the most viewed of all entertainment experiences in modern history," he added.

The forthcoming Project Natal motion control technology could replace the television remote control in the future, automatically scheduling content according to the people in a room, according to comments made by Xbox Live general manager Marc Whitten.
Speaking at the Streaming Media West show, as reported by Yahoo! Tech, Whitten described the increasing number of video applications - which includes Netflix in the US and Sky Player in the UK - on the Xbox 360 as the "biggest surprise" of his job.
Whitten also predicted that the increasing range and number of sources for video content required a new, easier to use controller than the traditional remote control - and that Project Natal was well placed to take over this role.
"With the flick of my wrist I can change a channel," Whitten said. "With the power of my voice I can start a movie."
"I don't believe we are currently in the golden age of the television or the golden age of the game console or the golden age of the Internet; frankly, five years from now I don't know that you'll be able to tell the difference between those worlds," Whitten added.
With the number of channels and content sources constantly increasing Whitten also suggested that in the future content would be organised according to brands and/or the user - with additional content being suggested automatically.
"The context is not 1 billion channels, but one," Whitten said. "One channel, with what I want, when I want it."

Xbox 360 games could soon include a new system to give you tips and guides submitted by other gamers when you get stuck according to a Microsoft patent. Will Microsoft’s system for cheats, prosper?
A patent for an Xbox 360 hint system submitted by Andre Vrignaud, Microsoft’s Director of Games Platform Strategy, revealed the plan to help gamers through tricky spots. If you find yourself stuck the game will pull up a list of hints and tips from a database.
Developers would be able to create guides to include in games but the interesting part is that users would also be able to submit their own handy hints.
The Wiki-style Xbox 360 hint system would allow players to capture screenshots and short video clips as well as adding annotations and audio commentary.
To ensure that hints and tips from the game’s producers get the most attention, the system would give them a star rating and weight them higher than user-created content.
The patent suggests the service could be included as part of Xbox Live but doesn’t mention whether it would be free or just available to Xbox Live Gold Members.
The question is: how popular would the Xbox 360 hint system be? Games like Halo 3: ODST or Modern Warfare 2 are likely to get lots of hints, tips and guides but less well known titles could end up with sparse support.

The return of Cody and Guy to Street Fighter isn't the only Final Fight news this week. Capcom has announced Final Fight Double Impact for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network, featuring not just the arcade version of the Metro City brawler, but Magic Sword as well!
Final Fight Double Impact, as the collection is titled, will feature optional graphical filters and a visual mode that makes the games appear as if they're being played on an arcade machine. Most importantly, both games will have drop-in online co-op. Capcom hasn't priced the collection yet, but there's no way the company will charge more than we've already put into Magic Sword machines over the years.

As cool as walking around wearing an Optimus Prime helmet may be, in certain places it'd likely get you shot. So Microsoft has slapped a load of Transformers-themed props into the Xbox Avatar closet today, so you can do it in the safety of the virtual world.
You're now able to give your little man a robotic head with Megatron, Optimus Prime and Bumblebee helmets - based on the new-school versions in the Michael Bay films, not the traditional cartoons unfortunately. You'll also find a selection of Autobot and Transformers t-shirts, and a tee donning the Transformers logo, if you're boring.
Tees cost 80 MS Points, the helmets are 240. Happy shopping...

News via http://www.eurasia.nu/index.php
source: xbox-scene.com] There's been a discussion thread on our forums about a way to 'uncripple' your harddrive AFTER you got banned. As you know Microsoft decided to 'remove' some HDD features (like play games from HDD, etc) when your console gets banned. Microsoft does this by modifying data in the secdata.bin on the NAND (that's why write-lock the NAND was a way to prevent HDD-crippling). But people found out the NAND has an older (backup?) copy of secdata.bin stored on the NAND as well. Now the hack consists of copying the old version of secdata.bin on the location of the new/current secdata.bin. Both secdata.bin are tagged with a date stamp so you can easily find out which one is the new and old one. As your console is already banned, it does not really matter if MS can detect this or not. Thwack wrote a good tutorial for this on our forums.

Crackdown 2 developer Ruffian Games has said that its relationship with Microsoft and the Xbox 360 controller "is a big reason for sticking with the 360", but that it doesn't think of itself "as exclusively 360 for the rest of time".
Talking with Square Go on the subject of Ruffian developing multiplatform titles in the future, Crackdown 2's producer James Cope said:
"We've been working with Microsoft for a long time so we have a lot of experience with the 360 but not so much with the PS3.
"We don't think of ourselves as exclusively 360 for the rest of time. As a company we have to keep things open and think about how to survive without Microsoft sometime in the future but that doesn't mean we're set in our ways.
"We're happy with the situation at the moment. We don't contain ourselves in any way. We want to make great games and we want to make great games on any console."
Creative Director Billy Thomson then added:
"And I prefer the 360 controller which is a big reason for sticking with the 360."
It's an off the cuff comment, of course, but we're certainly not going to disagree with Billy's taste in control pad. Do you?
Crackdown 2 launches exclusively on Xbox 360 next year.

First digital expansion for latest Call of Duty expected to arrive some time this spring
As well as rapidly easing past the half-billion dollar revenue milestone just days after its global release earlier this month, Broadpoint AmTech analyst Ben Schachter has predicted that Activision could generate as much as $140m in revenue from its upcoming Modern Warfare 2 digital content.
Furthermore, Infinity Ward’s community man Robert Bowling has confirmed via Twitter that the first of that DLC should be with us in the spring.
“Call of Duty DLC can be a solid contributor for Activision,” Schachter told IndustryGamers. “As with the last two COD titles, the game itself should maintain its $60 launch price until the next iteration, but Activision will also benefit significantly from the high-margin DLC potential enabled by the packaged product's success.
“We estimate that Activision will generate at least $100m-$140m in gross revenue from Call of Duty DLC in 2010. After paying the platform holders an estimated 30 per cent, this should generate roughly $59m-$85m.”
If true, this would be a remarkable step up from the digital success Activision enjoyed with last year’s Call of Duty: World at War, which made an estimated $45m from its post-release digital content.

Microsoft has patented a new invite system for Xbox Live which could be used for "viral" gaming similar to Facebook applications, but exclusively on the Xbox 360.
As reported by Siliconera the new patent was registered by director of platform development Gary Hall, previously head of casual developer Carbonated Games.
The concepts are all based around the current party system, with the most basic simply allowing invited friends to invite their own friends, whether they are known to the original party creator or not.
Other examples though describe a travel diary in which each user can fill in an entry and pass it on to their own friends, creating a pyramid scheme style distribution model. Another simple idea involves a "tug of war" where two players attempt to invite more friends than the other to their side.
More game-like variants are based on common party games, such as an icebreaker concept where players write down facts about themselves and others have to guess who they describe. If they guess incorrectly the fact can then be passed on to additional friends.
Additional examples include searching for a common link between otherwise unconnected friends and a variation of board game Taboo where players must guess a phrase one word at a time.
The patent is the second this week to give insight into Microsoft's ongoing plans for Xbox Live, with an earlier submission describing a GameFAQs style user-created help system. As with any patent though there is no indication as to when the concepts described will be implemented, if at all.

Reports have been rolling across the Gamesmen Media Desk, as of the last four days, from our small community and their friends lists. Reports about what, you say? The dreaded Red Ring of Death, of course. If the numbers multiply on a percentage basis, it would seem that Xbox360’s could very well be dropping like flies. Again. What game was spooling and spinning as these unfortunate circumstances occurred? Modern Warfare 2.
It doesn’t appear to be every model Xbox360- at least not the newer SKU’s. According to the gamers we spoke to, it has been those systems that are two(2) years or older(Pro Bundle and below). The newer Elite units with optimized cooling are seemingly unaffected.
So, one must ask, is the newest installment in the Call of Duty franchise too taxing for undercooled Xbox360’s? Modern Warfare 2 is indeed visually stunning. Could Infinity Ward have pushed the graphical envelope of Microsoft’s original platform specs? The two may very well NOT be linked, but questions are beginning to stack. It is completely possible that systems are dying at the same rate as prior, but it is happening shortly after the best-selling video game in history was released to the public. Then again, these people could have Prestiged four or five times in two weeks as well.
So the question goes out to you, mass gaming public: Is this an isolated incident or could there be truth to these limited findings?

Nintendo isn't the only platform-holder working on an in-game guide system. A Microsoft patent turned up by Siliconera (via GameSpot) outlines a "User-Powered Always Available Contextual Game Help" system for a games console.
However, the system - patented back in February 2008 - seems somewhat different from Nintendo's Super Guide, which made its first appearance in New Super Mario Bros. Wii last week. The Super Guide features a recorded playthrough of a given level, created by developers, which the player can jump into at any point.
Microsoft's answer is a database of help entries. When players get stuck, they can ask the game for help and it will automatically analyse the current context of the challenge, using a tagging system, and return a list of appropriate entries.
GameSpot suggests the guide would be installed on the console, whereas Siliconera reckons it would be available through Xbox Live, and the tips and guides would be submitted by other players.
According to Siliconera, the community-driven, FAQ-style approach would allow for the capture and annotation of screenshots and video clips by guide authors - even adding audio commentary if they wish. Entries would be rated by other players, and developers would naturally be able to contribute their own guides to be ranked above user-written pieces.

Activision UK has announced it will donate a "life changing" amount of money to the charity War Child in a Modern Warfare 2 online event to be held in December.
The publisher is asking that as many gamers as possible play MW2 on XBL on the weekend of December 5 and 6. The higher the number of unique, UK located users recorded, the more money the publisher says it will donate to the War Child charity.
People interested in taking part in the charity gaming session are invited to become a fan of the event's Facebook page and to add the Game For Good app to their wall and invite others. Event details and results will also be posted in the event's Twitter feed.
