November 17th, 2009, 16:24 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft has launched a host of new community features for the Xbox 360 platform, with Facebook, Twitter, last.fm and Zune functionality all now added to the consoles services.
The new functionality, previewed at a London event last night - at which Taio Cruz and Paloma Faith both performed - will enable users to post to Facebook and Twitter feeds, as well as listen to music via Last.fm and watch streaming 1080p HD content with Zune.
"It's the community that drives us forward, and it's the community that allows us to pioneer new ways of connecting people through the entertainment they love," said Neil Thompson, senior director of Microsoft's Entertainment Division in UK & Ireland. "Tonight we're celebrating the transformation of the TV as tomorrow everyone will be able to enjoy some truly exciting interactive entertainment experiences which continues to deliver on our vision of connected entertainment for everyone."
And Ryan Regan, CFO and head of digital, for Last.fm added: "The Last.fm and Xbox Live partnership firmly catapults the Xbox 360 into the centre of the social music revolution. With the ability to discover music and explore endless personalised stations, music fans can turn their game console into the ultimate living room entertainment centrepiece. This is another example of Last.fm working with an innovative partner to further connect listeners with their favourite music and artists."
A full list of functionality follows:
Facebook: Update your status to share the movie, game or entertainment you're enjoying, connect with friends and view their Facebook stream, status updates and photos on the big screen - as well as compare your Xbox Live and Facebook friends lists.
Twitter: Discover, post, and reply to Tweets on your Xbox 360. You can view friend profiles, trends and conversations, or search Twitter content.
Last.fm: Set up personalised radio stations with Last.fm on Xbox 360. Skip, 'ban' or 'love' songs to create your perfect mix, with built-in "Gamer Stations" featuring music selected specifically for the gaming community (available in the US and UK).
Zune: A premium high fidelity video experience with instant-on HD in 1080p and 5.1 channel surround sound for Xbox Live, with no waiting for downloads or buffering. The experience can also be shared with up to seven friends through voice chat and Avatar integration on the TV screen.
The Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm services will require users to subscribe to Xbox Live Gold membership, while all subscribers will have access to a four minute chase scene clip from forthcoming movie Avatar, directed by James Cameron.
The clip will be available from launch until November 21, and Jon Landau - producer on the film - commented: "With the fantastic high definition experience of Zune on Xbox Live we are so excited to be able to give Xbox 360 users a sneak preview of one of the exhilarating chase scenes in the movie before anyone else. The clip will only be exclusive on Xbox LIVE for five days, so don’t miss it."
The latest functionality upgrade follows shortly after the integration of Sky TV and film content onto the Microsoft platform - a launch which didn't run quite according to plan, but has now settled down.

Activision has confirmed the removal of the controversial airport scene from the Russian version of Modern Warfare 2, and said the move was its own decision.
"Other countries have formal ratings boards that we regularly work with. However, Russia does not have a formal ratings entity. As a result, we chose to block the scene after seeking the advice of local counsel," the company told Eurogamer in a statement. Modern Warfare 2 is currently only available on PC in the country.
Activision was moving to clear up reports that the game had been banned or censored by the Russian government. There are claims that the console versions of the game have been recalled from retailers so the airport scene can be removed.
"Reports that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has been banned in Russia are erroneous. Activision only released a PC version of the game in Russia which went on sale on Tuesday, 10th November," the company said.
The scene in question, titled 'No Russian', depicts Russian ultranationalist terrorists massacring civilians in an airport with the player's help.

Well, go figure. It seems like some companies see Microsoft's new and pricey Wireless N adapter for the Xbox 360 as a prime candidate for some competition. One of the first out of the gate is Mad Catz, which has just released its new Wireless-N Gaming Adapter that packs a slightly more reasonable MSRP of $80 (twenty bucks less than Mircosoft's), and should no doubt see even bigger discounts than the official Microsoft option. As you may have already guessed, however, this one is actually just a standard wireless bridge aimed at the gamer crowd, which just so happens to mean it'll also work just fine with the PlayStation 3 if you're looking to step-up to 802.11n or take advantage of the forthcoming Adhocparty service.

modrobert writes: "GodzIvan strikes again, this time with a diagram which simply write protects the NAND flash in the Xbox 360 by connecting WP to ground pin (if the flash type has different pinout, just find the datasheet to locate WP). This modification does not stop the ban from M$, but it prevents deletion of the HD installation certificates required by games which means you can still install them on the hard drive. In order to update the kernel this mod must be disabled; a simple switch solution comes to mind."

Sales of Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 have hit 1.78 million units in the UK, according to the latest data released by ELSPA/GfK-ChartTrack.
Last week first day sales in the UK were estimated at 1.23 million units, grossing revenues of approximately GBP 48 million. Units sold to date - in the game's first five days - have now been put at 1.78 million, creating revenues of GBP 67.4 million.
According to ELSPA this is the highest grossing figure for any video game launch in the UK and "amongst the biggest entertainment events in history".
"These figures tell a clear story. The video games industry is now an established part of the mainstream entertainment mix. Whilst the launch of Modern Warfare 2 has indeed been extraordinary, it is indicative of the growing popularity of video games. One in three people in the UK now play videogames regularly," said ELSPA director general Michael Rawlinson.
Combined first day sales of the game in the UK and U.S. are estimated to have generated USD 310 million for Activision.
The launch of the game has also seen Xbox Live register its greatest ever number of concurrent users, while simultaneously causing outages on PlayStation Network.

More than 2 million users have been recorded using Xbox Live at once, according to a Twitter post made by Xbox Live director of programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb.
Although Hryb did not specify when exactly the record was broken the post was made on Thursday 12 and stated, "We just hit a new #XboxLIVE record: Over TWO MILLION people connected to the service at once."
No further details were provided, but the record-breaking results were undoubtedly down to the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The previous record was 1.5 million concurrent users, attributed to the launch of the New Xbox Experience dashboard update late last year.
Infinity Ward's Rob Bowling recently claimed that the launch of Modern Warfare 2, and the subsequent increase in the number of concurrent users, had "killed" the PlayStation Network. After a break in service, servers were slowly put back online in an attempt to cope with demand.
Modern Warfare 2 has already broken sales records across the world, with 1.23 million unit sales in the first day in the UK and a total of 4.7 million for both the UK and US.
This is believed to have resulted in USD 310 million in revenues for publisher Activision.

November 15th, 2009, 21:46 Posted By: wraggster
"The topic du jour was all about TV, but this morning at NewTeeVee Live - an industry conference that explores the future of television - Xbox LIVE general manager Marc Whitten confirmed the next wave of social entertainment is coming to Xbox LIVE on November 17. Starting next week, Facebook, Twitter, Last.fm and instant on HD video from Zune will be available on Xbox 360 consoles, transforming Xbox LIVE into the largest social network connected to the TV with exclusive features custom-designed for the living room."
November 17th is the big day when Zune comes to the Xbox 360! Engadget has some great videos that they've disabled embedding on, so you'll have to go over to their site to see them. One of the interesting features is the ability to watch a movie in a shared virtual environment - meaning you can have a "movie party" and have several online friends watch the same movie at the same time, and you can emote certain things - and talk - while the movie is going on. I don't know how often I'd want to do that - probably never - but it's a neat use of technology to bridge distances between friends. The videos in the Zune video marketplace are 1080p, and support "instant on" streaming. Myself, I'm most curious to see what will happen to the selection of movies - it's always been pretty poor in Canada, and we've never had TV shows for download. If you want to get great online video in Canada, iTunes is pretty much the only game. I hope this Xbox update changes that!

Conflict currency - it's not cash, but goods or valuables that are small, easily liquidated, easily smuggled. Diamonds are the classic example. We might have to add Modern Warfare 2 to the list, after what just went down in Pennsylvania.
Cops in Meadville, Pa. say a man went into a Gamestop there at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, informed the clerk he had armed help out the door who'd start shooting if anyone called police, and so therefore start handing over the merch. I like that style. The hell with this finger-in-the-jacket-pocket shit. Just let your imaginary friend be your accomplice.
The guy made off with 100 copies of MW2, plus some other items for a total cash-and-prizes value of $6,900.
I'm not sure what surprises me the most, the ballsiness of the robber, or the fact a GameStop still had 100 copies of this 19 hours after its midnight release.
Also, please tell me the "other items" were some refurbed PS2s with balky DVD drives. Please.

A focus on turning the Xbox 360 into more than a video games console has seen its user base expand beyond the traditional gamer, Microsoft has said.
Microsoft says its reinvention of entertainment has seen a shift in where the Xbox lives in the home, with 60 per cent of Xbox consoles now integrated into the family living room. A shift has also been seen in the Xbox 360 user base: 35 per cent of Xbox customers are women and 64 per cent are over the age of 25.
Chris Lewis, vice president Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft Europe, says the imminent launch of new social networking features will only help broaden the console's appeal.
"… next week will bring real innovation into the living room through instant streaming high definition movies, connecting with friends on Facebook and Twitter and a personalised music channel. Together, this represents a real shift in the way people are entertained every day," said Lewis.
Microsoft's "reinvention of entertainment" doesn't stop there, with Project Natal expected to "create a new category of gaming and entertainment experiences through controller-free gaming that makes Xbox 360 more inclusive and relevant to an even wider audience".

News via http://team-xecuter.com/forums/showthread.php?t=51511
C4Eva announced he's working on a new firmware on IRC:
"[c4eva] new fw in dev/test - ixtreme LT (Lite Touch) - more efficient , minimal patching , all aspects of fw indistinguisable from orig, no more bans, No ETA!"
We do not have more details atm.
As far as we know the 3 'test boxes' C4Eva has running (see here) are still fine (not banned).
So there's NO ETA for the firmware yet (dont ask) but it should come out for Lite-On drives first.

The millions of Xbox Live players who were banned because of their modded Xbox 360 consoles may get a second chance with some firmware workarounds. Beware though, it's a complicated process.
First you'll need to get iXtreme LT, which'll attempt to return your console to a playable state. The catch is that you need to know your CPU code and that the instructions rely on a lot of different (free) tools.
Has anyone used this or another workaround to get their Xbox playing again?
