The Xbox One outsold Sony’s PlayStation 4 in the US last month, according to data firm NPD’s monthly games and console report.
As reported by Venture Beat, the American games market was up three per cent year-on-year, rising from $595.7m to $579.5m.
Revenue from hardware sales was down four per cent, with the overall increase in the market coming from software sales – which were up 13 per cent year-on-year. In terms of unit sales, hardware was up 12 per cent.
According to NPD, the decline in hardware sales was due to a 55 per cent dip in sales of the older formats, such as PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii.
But it was the Xbox One that was the best-selling hardware of the month, outselling the PlayStation 4.
"As the best-selling console in the U.S. in April, fans set record April sales and engagement for Xbox One last month," said Xbox VP of marketing Mike Nichols.
"Xbox One console sales in the U.S. increased 63 percent in April 2015 compared to April 2014 and Xbox Live comparisons showed the number of active global users (Xbox One and Xbox 360) grew 24 percent."
Sony also released a statement about its performance last month, reminding consumers of its overall position as market leader: “PlayStation continues to lead software sales for April 2015 and PS4 remains the cumulative sales leader in the U.S.”
And here is the software top ten for April:
1. Mortal Kombat X (Warner Bros)
2. Grand Theft Auto V (Rockstar)
