During tonight's Halo 5: Guardians launch festivities, Xbox boss Phil Spencer just announced that the Xbox One will receive its Windows 10-based update on November 12th. That's the one that will put a new UI on the console, as well as give everyone the ability to play certain Xbox 360 games. Some Xbox One owners in the preview program has been beta testing the new OS for a few months, and the experience has occasionally been a bit rough. Hopefully all that testing means the bugs are appropriately squished once this software rolls out wide in a couple of weeks. You can see the announcement in the videoembedded after the break, or jump to the live broadcast as the Microsoft folks count down to midnight.

Bethesda is now selling a Fallout 4-themed Xbox One controller.
The Fallout and Elder Scrolls publisher has the special edition gamepad (pictured) listed on its website. It will set consumers back $59.99 which is roughly £39.
The controller features a blue and gold colour scheme that mimics that of the Fallout series’ mascot, the Vault Boy. That character also appears on the peripheral.
In addition, the gamepad features a 3.5mm headset jack, and is wired. In addition, it can be used with PC.
The controller is set to go on ship on November 10th, the same day that Fallout 4 launches globally.

October 25th, 2015, 14:23 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft has said that combined Xbox One and Xbox 360 shipments for its fiscal Q1 were down 17 per cent year-on-year.
The company hasn’t revealed the actual sales figure, though did say the decline was mainly due to falling sales of the older Xbox 360 platform.
In the same period last year Microsoft reported Xbox sales of 2.4m units, so a 17 per cent decline – on the presumption it refers to unit sales – would point to sales this time of around 2m for the period.
In July Sony reported 3m PS4 unit sales for its Q1. At that stage global PS4 sales stood at 25.3m. The last time Microsoft revealed an Xbox One shipment number was back in November 2014, when it stood at 10m.
However, it’s certainly true that both systems are tracking well ahead of their predecessors, especially in the US. Both Xbox One and PS4 have had UK price cuts recently, in June and this week respectively.
There was big growth with Xbox Live. The service now has 39m active monthly users, up 28 per cent year-on-year and pushing Xbox Live revenues up 17 per cent. Game revenue soared 66 per cent thanks to the acquisition of Minecraft.
Microsoft’s overall revenue fell 12 per cent from $23.2bn last year to $20.4bn. Net income was up two per cent at $4.6bn. Revenues at its ‘More Personal Computing’ division, which is home to Xbox, fell from $11.2bn to $9.3bn. Operating income fell from $1.62bn to $1.56bn.
Interestingly, the company told Game Informer that it “will not be using console shipments as its primary metric for success beginning with this quarter” and that the company “is more focused on engagement, leading it to choose Xbox Live usership as its leading statistic”.

A Microsoft source has confirmed to Game Informer that the company will no longer provide sales updates for Xbox One.
The report states that the firm has stopped reporting console sale totals as of its most recent quarterly report – which explains why the usual figures were mysteriously absent from Microsoft's results earlier this week.
According to the report, Microsoft will focus on engagement data as its measuring stick and shift away from unit-to-unit comparisons with Sony's PS4 console.
The company plans to provide Xbox Live metrics in place of sales figures on all quarterly reports moving forward – such as the recent news that the online service is up 28 per cent year-over-year and has surpassed 39m users.

Is a gamepad worth $150? That's the question Microsoft is asking with theXbox One Elite controller, a revamp of its almost two-year-old paddle that shipped with the Xbox One. The company isn't targeting this as a device for the mainstream, though. Rather, the Elite is instead for highly competitive gamers -- the type that'd mod their controllers with third-party accessories for greater precision. The customization it offers comes at a steep price, costing over twice as much as the standard $60 controller.
Why should you care? Because the vanilla Xbox One controller feels like a cheap knock-off of the vaunted Xbox 360 pad that came before it. Microsoft said it spent over $100 million designing it, considering smell-o-vision and even a built-in projector for the gamepad, only to wind up with a mostly inferior clone. It has too many sharp edges, feels incredibly hollow and seems, well, cheap. Honestly, one of the biggest reasons I don't play my Xbox One much as my PlayStation 4 is because I prefer the latter's DualShock 4 controller. Keep all that in mind when you consider the following statement: I've been using the Elite controller for almost a week and I haven't wanted to put it down; this is the Xbox One gamepad we should've had from the outset.

It was a pretty good first quarter for Microsoft on the gaming front. The company revealed today that monthly active Xbox Live users increased by 28 percent over the last three months, a huge jump that now puts the active user base at 39 million. To be clear: These aren't the total amount of people on Xbox Live (which sits around 49 million), just those who are playing at least once a month. The summer break probably accounted for much of that growth, together with high-profile releases like Metal Gear Solid V and Destiny: The Taken King. Still, the gaming success wasn't enough to help Microsoft's More Personal Computing group -- which includes all of its devices -- still saw revenue fall 17 percent in Q1, mostly due to the 54 percent revenue drop in phones. And that figure isn't too surprising: Microsoft didn't really have many fresh phone offerings over the summer.

October 11th, 2015, 21:37 Posted By: wraggster
Xbox boss Phil Spencer has admitted that he doesn’t know if the Xbox One can ever catch PS4.
"You know, I don't know,” he responded when asked that exact question at the GeekWire Summit 2015, as reported by Videogamer. “You know, the length of the generation... They [Sony] have a huge lead and they have a good product."
A very forthright Spencer also discussed the impact that Xbox One’s troubled launched had at the company. Prior tohis appointment as Xbox boss last year Spencer, as head of Xbox Studios, was the public face of a string of u-turns by the company.
Strategic changes included the scrapping of Xbox One’s controversial always-on internet requirement and the need to always be connected to Kinect, changes to its indie publishing policies, a delay to the console’s European rollout and the addition of a headset to the launch SKU.
All of which Sony has been quick to take advantage of. Under Spencer, however, Microsoft has often (although not always) adopted a less corporate, more personal approach to Xbox PR. This was perfectly illustrated by Spencer’s humble E3 2014 presentation.
"One thing that probably I didn't realise as much as I should have when I started in this role was the impact that the launch had on our team here in Redmond, the Xbox team," Spencer added.
"The team in Redmond took as much of a hit as the external community did around the launch. And I sit back and I think about an [organisation] of thousands of people, you're down in the organisation and some words and some actions from executives kinda just trash all the work that you've done over the last three years, many weekends and nights, and you start to question why am I doing this?
“Why am I working so hard when a few crass comments can actually position our product more directly than any work than the team was doing? Were we building a product for us, or were we building a product for gamers? And as soon as that question came into people's minds and they looked at anything, whether it was the power of our box, our launch line-up, microtransactions, any of the features that you talked about, what you find is very quickly you lose the benefit of the doubt.”
It may come as a surprise, too, that despite all the effort – an unprecedented effort, it could be argued – that has gone into responding to the criticism, even today Microsoft has to deal with customers who have an incorrect perception of its machine.
“Have we recovered? I feel really good about the position and the product and the brand right now, but I was at the Gamestop Manager's Meeting about three weeks ago and I'm sitting with 5000 Gamestop manager's in Las Vegas and they'd come up and they still have customers that walk in the store that think that the Xbox One won't play used games,” he admitted.
“Just to be clear, Xbox One has always played used games from day one. But that perception that gets set early on, because consumers have five seconds to internalise your brand and your message and then they move on. They're not going to spend time to read what we say afterwards. Regaining that trust and the mindshare with the customer, the gamer, is incredibly difficult."

Microsoft won't officially bring its Cortana voice assistant to the Xbox One until 2016, and it's not even supposed to be available if you're using the console'sinterface preview. However, that isn't stopping you from trying it ahead of schedule. Gamers have discovered that you can access Cortana in the latest preview simply by visiting the settings menu, going up and mashing the A button multiple times. It doesn't offer the full range of Xbox commands just yet, but you can access any information that's already available in Cortana on other platforms, like your calendar. Think of this as a cheat code for the operating system -- you're getting a peek at something that most preview users won't see for weeks.

Who says big companies never listen? Based on user feedback, Microsoft hasincreased the number of people in a local Xbox One party chat from the current eight. "Garnering over 2,200 votes on Xbox Feedback, we are expanding party chat to include 12 people," said Microsoft's Major Nelson (Larry Hryb). The new feature has rolled out to all Xbox One and Windows 10 Xbox app users, though it's not something visible, as Hryb said it's "all server side." The extra comms will be especially handy during Xbox One FIFA parties when 11 separate players are on the pitch per team.

And just like that, another one of the tech industry's epic patent battles is coming to a close. Google and Microsoft have dropped all 20 (!) of the lawsuits they've filed against each other, ending their five-year dispute over everything ranging from phones (Microsoft's main gripe) to Xbox video playback (Google's gripe, and formerly Motorola's). The two will now partner both on technology as a whole and on "certain patent matters," such as building aroyalty-free video format that prevents these kinds of legal fights in the first place. The truce is no doubt a relief if you're tired of seeing endless stores about the lawsuits (guilty!), although it's not a complete shock if you've been following changes in corporate culture.

An unfinished and forgotten South Park game has been unearthed on an original Xbox debug.
The debug console, designed to run unfinished game code for testers and press demos, had a working version of the South Park game installed on it at some point.
Originally discovered by Nintendo Age forum mod qixmaster back in August, the build has now been given a thorough investigation by HappyConsoleGamer (thanks, Kotaku).
The game code is early and broken, but much of the its open world lies intact. It looks like the title was designed to be a South Park version of The Simpsons Hit 'N Run, which was itself a cartoony take on Grand Theft Auto.
Other less-complete sections showcase systems not yet built into the main game. For example, there's fighting system test room which features an area where Cartman can punch wild dogs.
The build is apparently the work of Buzz Monkey Games, a small Oregon-based studio which was later gobbled up by Zynga and rebranded as Zynga Eugene.

Microsoft is launching a Preview Program for its Windows 10 Xbox app, similar to what it has on the Xbox One console. The Xbox Beta app will let fans "provide early input on features and enhancements coming to the Xbox app on Windows 10, helping us shape the product based on fan feedback," according to Xbox Wire. That's not as exciting as previewing early games, of course, but the Windows 10 Xbox One companion app has gradually become pretty handy, especially if you're into features like online gaming, achievements and console streaming.

Microsoft has done right by Xbox 360 users lately, making their gamesbackwards-compatible on Xbox One consoles and introducing Windows 10game streaming. A new update gives users of the last-gen console cloud storage, albeit a tiny amount -- 2GB. Still, the idea is to give you enough to port your Xbox 360 game saves over to an Xbox One for any compatible titles you decide to port over. The new feature is a good sign that backwards compatibility is coming out of preview soon, so you may want to get the update and upload your game saves forthwith.
