The head of Microsoft has said the company is preparing for video games to grow beyond the current traditional industry.
But he notes that the platform holder's strength is still in high-end gaming experiences.
During an earnings call following its most recent financial results, CEO Satya Nadella was asked how gaming fits into the company's overall plans in the coming years.
"We are in gaming because of what we believe are going to be the secular changes in the gaming addressable market for us," he said, according to a transcript on Seeking Alpha.
"Going forward, we think that any endpoint can in fact be a great endpoint for high-end games which is where our structural position is."
Nadella pointed to the success of Game Pass and the "supporting mechanism" that help it grow, such as game streaming and the Xbox Live social network.
Earlier in the call, he noted that Xbox Live's monthly active users rose to a record 65 million in the last quarter, "with the highest number of mobile and PC users to date."

Xbox Game Pass is the first time that the subscription model has made economic sense for game developers, according to Playdead and Jumpship co-founder Dino Patti.
Speaking on a panel hosted by GamesIndustry.biz at Gamelab 2019, Patti touched on a subject that often gets lost amid the noise around Microsoft's first-party studio acquisitions. While Double Fine, Obsidian, inXile and the rest will be making content for Game Pass, third-party studios face a different reality.
"With subscription models, there are two angles: the consumer angle and the developer angle," said Dino Patti, who departed Playdead in 2016, and has since co-founded both Jumpship and Coherence. "Consumers want as many games as possible, as cheaply as possible... But the developer needs to look at what [the deal] gives them.""With Game Pass, Microsoft is doing it correctly for the developers"
Dino Patti
Microsoft's first-party studios will be judged by a certain set of metrics, of course, but for third-party studios to be involved with Game Pass, the deal has to make sense upfront. In that respect, Patti said, previous subscription services like OnLive and Gaikai fell short even despite the technical limitations of streaming. Game Pass is not a streaming service, but from Patti's point-of-view Microsoft has got the most important aspect right.
"For me -- and I might be a bit biased -- but I think the way the business is with Game Pass is the first time subscription is what could be considered fair for developers," he added. "All other business models that have been suggested with subscriptions have never worked out, because they didn't know what developers actually need.
"With Game Pass, Microsoft is doing it correctly, I feel, for the developers."
According to Paradox Interactive's Fredrik Wester -- another panellist at Gamelab 2019 -- a common mistake that many people make is to compare Game Pass to services like Spotify and Netflix, as if they are "the same thing with the same business model."

Gears of War 5 has ditched loot boxes and the season pass, developer The Coalition has announced.
DLC maps are free for matchmaking and private play, according to a post on the Gears5 website.
You earn content via the new Tour of Duty system, and all store purchases are direct, so there's no RNG.
Tour of Duty is a seasonal progression system that involves Daily Challenges and Medals. These let you rank up and earn customisation content, such as character skins.
"The path to each piece of content earnable is clear - you will know what you need to do to earn each specific customisation item," reads the post.
There is no premium, pay-only content for Tour of Duty, the post clarifies.
There are Supply Drops in the game, which you get just for playing. Supply Drops are a random item drop from a pool of content called Supply. If you get a duplicate card, it's automatically turned into Scrap, which in turn is spent on crafting Supply items you don't have or upgrading character skills. You cannot buy Supply Drops and Supply Drop content with real-world money.
What you can buy with real-world money is customisation content, via the premium in-game currency called Iron. You can earn some Iron through each Tour of Duty to spend in the Store. But everything in the Store is direct purchase. No Gear Packs, as in previous entries in the series, and "no randomness".
"We are committed to ensuring we preserve a fair competitive environment across our modes, so there will be no items in the store that provide a competitive advantage for real-money purchasers, i.e. no pay to win."
But! You can spend real-world money on what's called Boost, which provides "accelerated progression for a period of real-world time" such as a day or a week. Boost gives you double multiplayer XP, double character XP for Escape and Horde modes, and double speed Supply Drop progression.
This all sounds welcome if you're interested in getting Gears 5 when it comes out in September. The XP Boost sounds a little worrying, and the suggestion is you'll be able to pay to get Supply Drops quicker. But a The Coalition rep stepped in on reddit to say "supply is based on time... so not boostable".

Though Xbox is holding a firm line on further details surrounding Project Scarlett beyond its official announcement yesterday, Xbox head Phil Spencer today confirmed a commitment to backward compatibility of some kind.
Speaking on Inside Xbox, Spencer called Xbox One "the most compatible console I've ever had," stating he wanted compatibility to be a feature of Project Scarlett as well.
"When we thought about our design for Project Scarlett, we definitely wanted to make sure that we were compatible across all the generations. Not just with the games, but with the accessories, obviously Xbox Live will continue and you are who you are across the whole ecosystem.
"It's really us respecting the purchases our players have made on our platform. Some of these games people bought a decade ago in our digital ecosystem, and you're going to turn on Project Scarlett and the entitlement is going to be there, you can go download the game and play. And as gaming goes from all-physical to a combination of physical and digital, I think us respecting the purchase people have made at no charge allowing them to continue playing their games - and in many cases those games play the best and look the best on the new generation which frankly isn't easy to do - is just something I wanted to continue to do with Project Scarlett."
Spencer did not offer further specifics as to how this would work, though per his quote it sounds that Xbox Live will carry over onto Project Scarlett and users will be able to bring their game libraries with them.
In the most ideal realization of this idea, this would mean users could bring games from the original Xbox all the way up to Project Scarlett, as Xbox One currently allows for a selection of Xbox 360 and original Xbox games to work on its current console, either via digital purchases on Xbox Live or (in the case of physical editions of older games) by downloading a compatible version of the title upon insertion of a game disc. It is not clear if Project Scarlett will allow full libraries to be playable, or if Spencer is referring only to select titles from any given console.

Microsoft has announced there will be no more games added to the backwards compatible catalogue for Xbox One.
In a blog post listing the final titles coming to the initiative, the platform holder explained it is now "setting our sights on what's next for the future of compatibility" -- i.e. concentrating on its next-generation console, codenamed Project Scarlett.
"Four years later, compatibility remains a priority for Xbox, for our community and for developers and their games, and preserving the art form of video games is part of our DNA," the company wrote.
The post also reiterated the goal stated by Xbox boss Phil Spencer during an E3 episode of Inside Xbox last night, where he declared he wanted Project Scarlett to be able to play all four generations of Xbox games.
Since Microsoft first announced backwards compatibility for Xbox One at E3 2015, it has made over 600 original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles playable on its current console. Over half of all Xbox users have made use of this functionality.
The final wave of backwards compatible games includes the earliest Splinter Cell titles -- making the entire franchise now playable on Xbox One -- as well as Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy, and Unreal Championship 2. It is also making the digital version of Xbox 360 RPG Too Human available for free.

It was always destined to be Xbox's E3.
Unimpeded by its biggest competitor for the first time in its history, Microsoft could have shown up with just a smattering of new announcements and still have claimed E3 for its own. The fact that it did so with a showcase crammed with games, new hardware, new services, two new studios and a Keanu Reeves, spoke to the fact that Xbox is taking no chances.
There was one thing that united all of Microsoft's E3 reveals -- from Halo Infinite to Project Scarlett, and Project xCloud to Gears 5 -- and that was Game Pass. The subscription service was the one constant throughout Xbox's E3 conference. Over half of the 60 games on show will be debuting in Game Pass, and Microsoft's studio expansion and acquisition strategy is almost entirely influenced by this business model.
Double Fine is the latest high-profile company to join the Xbox family of in-house developers, and its objective (alongside its 14 sister studios) is to create games that can be used to attract and retain Game Pass customers.
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, head of Xbox Phil Spencer admits that the spending spree is by no means over. The strategy will be familiar to anyone who has followed the Netflix story. The TV streaming platform reportedly spent between $12 and $13 billion on content last year, and that number is expected to rise this year. "It's not every year that we'll add seven new studios, but I do think us looking at specific targets that we need is important"
"They're growing their business," Spencer notes. "I think they've done a very good job of investing into where they see the business is going. For us as Microsoft, it is one of the things about having the support of the company behind us. Satya Nadella, our CEO, and Amy Hood our CFO, and our board, see gaming as an important growth category. You can look at our P&L of our company; we're not spending $12 billion on video games today, but as the subscriptions grow and reach more customers, I do think it's important for us to continue to invest in content. It's not every year that we'll add seven new studios, but I do think us looking at specific targets that we need is important."
There is no acquisition quota for Spencer and his team to hit. Instead, the aim is to find developers that can add something different for Game Pass.

Ahead of Microsoft's E3 2019 press conference, an official website has gone live launching Xbox Game Pass for PC in open beta, which will cost $5/month (£4) for a limited time.
This is half the current cost of the subscription service on Xbox consoles, and it won't stay this way. Those who have subscribed will receive a 30-day notice before the price reverts to the console cost of $10/month.
Xbox announced the PC version of the service last month, revealing it as similar to the console service but with a more "curated" selection. In addition, new games from Microsoft's internal studios will be released on Xbox Game Pass for PC on their release days.
Games listed as coming to Xbox Game Pass PC at launch include Forza Horizon 4, Hello Neighbor, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, Sea of Thieves, State of Decay 2, We Happy Few, and Ark: Survival Evolved. Gears 5, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, and Ori and the Will of the Wisps will also come to the service.
The service is live now and at a further discount of $1 for the first month.

June 10th, 2019, 21:06 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft has unveiled its next generation Xbox console at E3 2019, which is still under the long rumoured codename "Project Scarlett."
Project Scarlett was introduced by Phil Spencer as part of a packed Xbox E3 press briefing, which showcased the company's growing strength as a first-party publisher.
"We hear you," Spencer said. "A console should be designed and built and optimised for one thing, and one thing only: gaming."
The new hardware was created by the same team as the one that built the Xbox One X, members of which discussed their goals in a short video. The console will be capable of 120fps frame-rates and 8K resolution, thanks to a custom AMD chip that is four times faster than the Xbox One X.
The team also emphasised the importance of its SSD (solid-state drive), which will drastically reduce load times. It's worth noting that Sony has made similar claims about the architecture of its new PlayStation console.
Rumours that the Xbox E3 briefing would feature new hardware started to emerge long before the event began. Twitter users noticed a message hidden in Microsoft's countdown to E3 promotional video, which when decoded pointed to the colour "Scarlet" -- Scarlett has been rumoured to be the codename for the next Xbox for almost a year.

Xbox's games streaming efforts will ramp up this October with a preview version of both Project xCloud and a new feature that will allow owners to stream games from their own consoles.
During the platform holder's E3 press conference, Xbox boss Phil Spencer announced the new console streaming feature which will turn each Xbox One into "your own personal and free xCloud server."
While he didn't go into further detail, it sounds akin to PlayStation's Remote Play feature, which allows users to stream content playing from their own console to other devices such as smartphones and tablets.

While there was only one major acquisition announced during Xbox's E3 2019 press conference, Microsoft has one more new studio up its sleeve.
In a blog post shared after the show, Microsoft snuck in that it has created a brand new studio for Age of Empires headed by Microsoft veteran Shannon Loftis.
The news follows last night's announcement of Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, which updates the classic strategy game with 4K visuals and a brand new campaign, The Last Khans. It will launch this autumn.
"We are committing more resources and dedicated leadership to the Age of Empires franchise to ensure that its legacy on PC continues in service of the passionate community of faithful fans," the platform holder wrote.

There will be no new Forza Motorsport title this year, the series' developer has confirmed.
The franchise has been an annual pillar of Microsoft's line-up since 2011's Forza Motorsport 4, after which the Motorsport titles alternated every year with Playground Games' Forza Horizon series.
But the expected Forza Motorsport 8 was nowhere to be seen at last night's Xbox E3 press conference and Turn 10 Studios confirmed to IGN that it won't be announced any time soon.
"As of right now, [the next] Motorsport itself is actually in concept," creative director Dan Greenawalt told the site. "It's just something we're currently building."
Greenawalt observed that his studio has been supporting Forza Motorsport 7 "for longer than we ever have before", with updates and new content added as recently as last month -- almost two years after the game's launch.
The developer has also been focusing on growing the community around the game, with Greenawalt adding that while Turn 10 is starting to focus on its next project, it is "doing it all very, very differently."
"We're taking this fan-first, player-first approach where we're bringing players in in different capacities to have them help us ideate on what we build next, and prototype new ideas and new thoughts."
Spin-off series Forza Horizon has also been shifting towards a community focus, with Forza Horizon 4 marking the first time the series has been run as a live service, updating every four weeks -- although, as Playground recently told us, this is being achieved without crunch.
It's also more than likely that an extra year's breathing room will allow Turn 10 to spend more time getting Forza Motorsport 8 ready for Xbox's next generation console -- codenamed Project Scarlet -- which is due by Christmas 2020.

With no Sony to compete with for attention at its E3 2019 press conference, Microsoft could have easily walked into its annual Xbox event, thrown a few games out, and called it a day with few people disappointed.
Instead, the company stepped in with a flurry of game trailers (admittedly light on gameplay or 2019 releases), news about Project xCloud, and most interesting of all, details on its next-gen console codenamed Project Scarlett. It was a busy, rapid-fire hour and a half stuffed with world premieres and new announcements, and Xbox Game Pass availability of some kind touted for everything shown.
The crowning moment of Xbox's E3 2019 press event was its announcement of details surrounding its elusive Project Scarlett, which is incidentally what it's still referring to its next-gen console as for the time being.
It did confirm that the console is in the works for a release of Holiday 2020, where it will launch alongside Halo Infinite. The console is allegedly four times more powerful than the Xbox One X, and is made by the same team that worked on last year "most powerful console."
Broken down, Microsoft claims that means framerates up to 120fps, 8K, next-gen ray tracing, variable refresh rate support, and an SSD being used as "virtual RAM." For the processor, Microsoft has partnered with AMD to co-engineer a brand new piece of technology. And as Phil Spencer put it onstage, Project Scarlett will be a console that is "100% focused on games.
Though that's all we know at the moment about Project Scarlett, it does seem likely that it ends up having some kind of close relationship with Microsoft's endeavors into cloud gaming, which it also offered more details on during the presentation.

The next Xbox console will still have a physical disc drive, says Xbox head Phil Spencer.
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Spencer reiterated the company's goal of giving players choice with all its services, and that extends to the new Project Scarlett machine.
He adds that he believes digital has certain advantages, but the firm is not about to force gamers down the 'all-digital' route.
"Yeah [physical discs are part of our future]," he says.
"We know, because we see it, that more and more players are buying digital. We think the experience in certain instances, specifically if I am away from my console and everything is on my hard-drive with the entitlements are all there, there are some scenarios that are easy. But we know that people still have discs.
"So even when we put out things like the Xbox One S All-Digital edition, we are very clear with the name because I am not trying to confuse anybody, that if you are somebody that has a library of discs, or that's the way you want to acquire the content, then you should buy the Xbox One S, not the Xbox One S All-Digital... which is why we put it in the name, and yes I know it says SAD.
"I want to be very descriptive, because I am not trying to confuse anybody about what the options are. I want to give people choice, and right now physical is a choice that millions of people love."

Microsoft has committed to launching the PC versions of all Xbox Game Studios titles on multiple storefronts, including Steam.
In its second big announcement for PC gamers today, Microsoft said that forthcoming Xbox Games Studios titles Gears 5 and Age of Empires I, II & III: Definitive Editions will be released on Steam, and not just the Windows Store.
This will be part of a wider change at the company, which will result in all Xbox Game Studios titles launching on multiple PC stores on the same day
"We know millions of PC gamers trust Steam as a great source to buy PC games and we've heard the feedback that PC gamers would like choice," Xbox head Phil Spencer said in a blog post.
"We also know that there are other stores on PC, and we are working to enable more choice in which store you can find our Xbox Game Studios titles in the future."
Spencer referenced Steam in his blog post, but did not mention the Epic Games Store, which has made great strides in gaining a foothold in a market Valve has dominated for so long. However, Spencer stressed that, "we believe you should have choice in where you buy your PC games."
