As holiday 2020 approaches, Microsoft prepares for the launch of its Xbox Series X game console. The latest in next-gen news involves a new initiative that will see Xbox make monthly official announcements involving the console, including tidbits like upcoming first-party games, new Game Pass titles, improvements to Project xCloud, and more. This July, we'll be getting our first look at numerous Xbox Games Studios games, with new gameplay trailers and announcements. Later this week, Microsoft will be hosting an Inside Xbox episode, where they plan to showcase some third-party games coming to the Xbox Series X, including the recently revealed Assassins Creed: Valhalla.
So, what is in store for 2020?
This is a momentous year for Xbox, with our next-gen console paving the way for all our games and services to come together in even better ways. Here’s what 2020 looks like, just to start: - Our goal remains to launch Xbox Series X and Halo Infinite this Holiday
- All 15 Xbox Game Studios teams are hard at work on next-generation games for Xbox Series X and Xbox Game Pass
- The best development teams around the world are working hard to have their games ready to play on Xbox Series X this holiday
- For PC players, we plan to support the community by making all our major releases at launch available with Xbox Game Pass for PC, including Halo Infinite, Wasteland 3, Minecraft Dungeons and of course, Microsoft Flight Simulator.
- We have new updates and titles lined up for Xbox Game Pass for console and PC
- We’re expanding Project xCloud into new countries and on new devices—and later this year Project xCloud and Xbox Game Pass will come together, enabling you and your friends to play together in more ways.
It’s a lot – and that’s saying something in 2020, a year which could be summed up as “a lot.” With all this in mind, we set out to create new touchpoints to celebrate gaming and share what’s next with our global community.
Xbox 20/20
Starting with the May 7 episode of Inside Xbox, we will be showcasing what happens next in the world of Xbox, every month, which is why we’re calling it “Xbox 20/20.” These monthly moments will take place throughout the rest of the year and will be a way for us to engage, connect and celebrate with you about what’s in store for the next generation of gaming, including what’s next for Xbox Series X, Xbox Game Studios, Xbox Game Pass and Project xCloud. Every month will bring something different. Stay tuned to Xbox Wire for more details.
For the Xbox 20/20 May update, we will focus on giving you a first look at next-gen gameplay, trailers and sneak peeks from a wide variety of publishing partners and independent developers across the globe and industry, including Ubisoft’s recently announced Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and hear from game creators about what they’re doing with their games on Xbox Series X.
We’ll be confirming games that utilize our new Smart Delivery feature, which ensures that you always play the best version of the games you own for your console, across generations. And all the games you’ll see will be Xbox Series X Optimized, meaning they are built to take advantage of the powerful Xbox Series X features that make games look and feel incredible, including 4K resolution at up to 120 frames per second, DirectStorage, hardware-accelerated DirectX raytracing, super-fast load times and much more.
In July, we will dedicate time to focus on the incredible games coming from Xbox Game Studios. A number of our studio teams are looking forward to sharing first looks at new gameplay, insights from development teams being optimized for Xbox Series X, and brand-new game announcements. We cannot wait to share this initial look at what some of those teams are working on.

As we’ve seen in recent weeks, gaming is being used for entertainment, for inspiration, and for strengthening social connections between you and your friends through shared adventures. As you continue to connect with your friends around the world through gaming, we look forward to sharing more of our plans on Xbox Wire so you can all join us as we look into the future of Xbox.
You’ll get more news and updates on Xbox Series X, reveals of new Xbox Game Studios and development partner titles, details on the future of Xbox Game Pass, and much more.
I’ve always believed in the future Team Xbox has been building with its community around the world. To join that vision and make it part of my own responsibilities is something I just couldn’t pass up when I joined the Xbox Marketing team last December and, today, I feel more reassured than ever that we’ll be able to bring it to pass with the help of our community.

Drifting analog sticks have led to another class-action lawsuit in the games industry.
As reported by VGC, a New York resident has filed suit against Microsoft in US District Court for the Western District of Washington, claiming the company has known about but failed to disclose a design defect with Xbox One controllers that results in joystick drift.
The plaintiff, who describes himself as an avid gamer, says he purchased an Xbox One Elite controller that developed joystick drift -- continually registering an input even when left alone -- over the course of two years, and then replaced it with another Elite controller that showed drift problems after a few months.
The suit alleges that Microsoft must have known about the defect for a number of years, and cites user complaints on Microsoft's forums as well as comments from a variety of game sites as evidence of how widespread the defect was.

Between the effects of COVID-19, post-holiday lulls, and the continued waning console cycle, it was a quiet Q3 for Microsoft's gaming segment.
Today, the company reported its quarterly financial results for the period ending March 31, 2020, stating that gaming revenue was down 1% year-over-year and Xbox content and services revenue up 2%.
Microsoft noted that the slight rise in Xbox content and services revenue was attributable to more people sheltering in place due to COVID-19, but was partially offset by "a high prior year comparable primarily from a third-party title" -- a line that's been used in the last several prior quarterly reports.
For the More Personal Computing business segment, which includes Xbox and gaming as well as Windows OEM, Surface, and search advertising, revenue reached $11 billion -- up 3% year-over-year.
This is within the company's projections of between $10.75 billion and $11.15 billion for the segment this quarter, even though Microsoft said in late February it expected to miss argets.
Operating income for the segment was at $3.63 billion, up 15% year-over-year.
Revenue for the company as a whole reached $35 billion, up 15% year-over-year, with Microsoft reporting that COVID-19 had a minimal net impact on the company as a whole.

When Microsoft pitched us an interview on Gears Tactics, it was described as "the first Xbox Games Studios title built as a PC-first experience."
The PR exec who made the pitch appreciated that was a bit of a stretch. Microsoft has been making PC-first games for longer than it's been making Xbox games. The Xbox Games Studios brand was formed in February last year, but even since then there have been PC-only releases, namely a new version of Age of Empires II and the free-to-play PC game Forza Street, a rebranding of 2018's Miami Street.
Gears Tactics is really "the first entirely new Microsoft game made for PC in two years," which doesn't sound nearly as impressive.
Phrasing aside, Gears Tactics is an important release in Microsoft's latest efforts to convince gamers that it's serious about PC. This game isn't a remaster of a classic title, or an Xbox One port, or a free-to-play service aimed at a casual audience -- it's a hardcore strategy game aimed squarely at the PC gaming enthusiast.
Microsoft has been here before. I recall hearing of its commitment to PC during the 2011 and 2012 promotional campaign for Age of Empires Online and Microsoft Flight, but that support soon faded away, so there's an understandable level of scepticism around Microsoft's latest PC pledges. At E3 last year, we spoke to Xbox boss Phil Spencer about the PC Game Pass subscription service, and it's a reality he acknowledged. "There's a healthy amount of scepticism on whether we are really true to that [PC] customer," he said. "Or is this just another ploy for us to get them to buy an Xbox? Which it is not."

Head of Xbox Phil Spencer has spoken out about the delicate situation games companies find themselves in during the ongoing coronavirus crisis.
In an interview with Business Insider, the exec acknowledged that Xbox -- like so many games firms -- has seen certain benefits from the majority of people spending more time at home, but is being careful not to take advantage of the situation.
"We wanted to be very thoughtful and not exploiting the situation," he said. "We're not putting in place any different business tactics or other things.
"We're just trying to keep all the services up, trying to keep the games enjoyable, keeping our networks safe and secure. And being there at a time of need. I'm proud that we can provide this activity for people."
He noted that social distancing measures have driven people to use video games as one of many ways to connect with friends and family, adding that, "Gaming right now, globally, is having a moment."

It sports a gray and yellow color scheme and glow in the dark paint, while the controller is half-silver, half-black. Xbox has shared details of its plans to bring the preview version of its games streaming service Project xCloud to Europe -- but, as is everything else these days, it's largely dependent on measures to fight COVID-19.
As announced back in November, Project xCloud is heading to Western Europe this year and Microsoft has now specified the first 11 countries due to receive it.
These include Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain and Sweden.
However, in a blog post the platform holder emphasised that it will be rolling this out cautiously to avoid adding even more stress to internet infrastructure caused by the pandemic.
"We know gaming is an important way for people to remain connected, particularly during these times of social distancing, but we also recognize how internet bandwidth has been impacted with strain on regional networks as large volumes of people responsibly stay home and go online," wrote Project xCloud's general manager and head of product Catherine Gluckstein.
She added: "With that in mind, we continue to evaluate the COVID-19 situation and will begin rolling out the Project xCloud preview across 11 Western European countries when we are confident it is sensible to do so. We will take a measured approach to help conserve internet access, beginning the preview in each market with a limited number of people and adding more participants over time."

Xbox Game Pass will launch in Japan on April 14, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has announced.
In a video released today, Spencer addressed what he described as an "incredibly important" country to both Xbox, and him personally, due to the role it has played in the history of video games.
"This is an announcement that I know many of you have been waiting for, and I thank you for your patience as we worked through the details to make this happen," he said. "We're here."
The subscription service, which is already available in many other territories, will launch for both PC and console on April 14.
Spencer highlighted what he saw as "specific Japanese games" that will be included on Game Pass from day one: Devil May Cry 5, Ace Combat 7 and Tekken 7 on console, and Yakuza 0 on PC and console.
He also mentioned Minecraft, which he said has a big audience in Japan, and Dead Rising 4, which was developed in Canada but published by the Japanese firm Capcom.

April 7th, 2020, 22:19 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft has announced all its internal and external events will shift to a digital model until next summer in order to prevent spreading coronavirus.
The company already confirmed to ZDNet last week that all 2020 events would be digital only, and now an internal email suggests this will last until the end of July 2021.
The email was shared by Microsoft MVP and community contributor Ginny Caughey via Twitter.
It reads: "In light of the challenges presented by COVID-19, Microsoft has been closely monitoring the developing global situation and re-assessing the overall company-wide in-person event strategy. As a company, Microsoft has made the decision to transition all external and internal events to a digital first experience through July 2021.
"This will include the future MVP & RD Summit which is currently scheduled for March 28 - April 2, 2021. We will continue to evaluate the situation and look forward to connecting in person when the situation allows."
It's not clear how this will affect Xbox events, although the platform holder has already been experimenting with delivering news via its Inside Xbox broadcasts, with another due to air later today.
Update, February 12, 2020: Microsoft told GamesIndustry.biz in a statement: “In light of the challenges presented by Covid-19, we are adjusting our event calendar and strategy. For the remainder of 2020 we are embracing the opportunity to experiment with new platforms to provide our partners, customers and developers the highest quality, digital-first experiences.”
It didn't offer any clarity on its physical plans for events such as Gamescom, GDC and E3.

Staggering the global rollout of the Xbox Series X console would "hurt" the platform, according to Xbox boss Phil Spencer, who said that there is still no "Plan B" to launching the console this year.
on its Unlocked podcast, Spencer responded to a question about a "Plan B" that could happen if the spread of the COVID-19 virus makes launching a new console impossible in 2020.
IGN suggested that a staggered launch could be achievable this year, with Xbox Series X made available in some territories before others.
"I know that significant delays in regional launches hurt us," Spencer said, referring to the gradual launch of Xbox One. "It hurts us with the sentiment of the fans. Every time I go to Japan I'm reminded that we were nine months late launching there with Xbox One."We haven't started on that Plan B, but I'd be hesitant to do something like [a staggered launch]"
"And the internet means that everybody knows where everything is launched. It's not like 30 years ago... You don't get the roar of people getting excited from other regions.
Spencer added: "We haven't started on that plan B, but I'd be hesitant to do something like that."
Supply chains that rely on China's manufacturing capacity have "started to come back," Spencer said, in a way that bodes well for Xbox to meet its targets for the year.
However, he also stressed that the biggest challenges that Xbox faces right now are "more software related than hardware [related]." With its workforce now operating from their homes, Microsoft is still solving the problem of replicating vital development functions with a distributed team.
"Building a video game from home, with a large distributed team of hundreds of people, is not easy," Spencer said, framing that problem as a moving target that Xbox is still coming to terms with.

The ongoing pandemic is driving greater demand for all things online, and Microsoft's assortment of services is no exception.
As The Verge reported, Microsoft this weekend said it has seen a 775% jump in demand for its cloud services like Microsoft Teams and Windows Virtual Desktop in places with enforced social distancing measures or shelter-in-place orders due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The increased demand has prompted Microsoft to limit some Xbox Live functionality as well.
"We're actively monitoring performance and usage trends to ensure we're optimizing services for gamers worldwide," the company said. "At the same time, we're taking proactive steps to plan for high-usage periods, which includes taking prudent measures with our publishing partners to deliver higher-bandwidth activities like game updates during off-peak hours."
