UK-based publisher Future has closed Official Xbox Magazine.
That's according to our sister site Eurogamer, which reports the magazine was shut down last week and the remaining team let go.
Five other magazines are also said to be closed, but none of them fall within Future's gaming category.
Eurogamer shares an OXM tweet from as recently as Saturday advertising subscriptions, but this has since been removed. The Twitter account remains active, promoting GamesRadar content.
OXM had been running for more than 18 years, having launched in November 2001 around the debut of the original Xbox. It closes in the same year Xbox Series X is expected to launch.
The closure also follows news that Future has also dramatically cut its freelance budget, including for its video games publications.

Despite Xbox being quite generous about the details surrounding its next-gen console, some information are still kept under tight wraps, and likely will remain so. One of these, the source code for the console's Graphics Processing Unit, has been stolen from a hacker who threatens to leak it. The individual, who claims to be a female, got a hold of the source codes for Navi 10, Navi 21 and Arden GPUs, the latter being what's inside the Xbox Series X according to her.
“In November 2019, I found AMD Navi GPU hardware source codes in a hacked computer,” the hacker told TorrentFreak. “The user didn’t take any effective action against the leak of the codes.”
AMD has filed at least two DMCA notices against Github repos with source code relating to AMD's Navi and Arden GPUs, which have since been taken down. However, the hacker told TorrentFreak that if there's no buyer doesn't for the rest of the code, she will "just leak everything".
“I haven’t spoken to AMD about it because I am pretty sure that instead of accepting their mistake and moving on, they will try to sue me. So why not just leak it to everyone?” she added.
She estimates the source code to be valued at $100 million and threatens to leak everything if there is no buyer.
AMD on the other hand wrote in a statement that "the stolen graphics IP is not core to the competitiveness or security of our graphics products" and they are progressing with a criminal investigation.

GameStop today reassured investors that the ongoing novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic does not yet seem to be threatening the year-end launches of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
In a post-earnings conference call with investors, GameStop CEO George Sherman said there was no indication yet that the pandemic would have an impact on the planned fourth-quarter launches of the two consoles, either in when they go on sale or when GameStop takes delivery on them from the console makers.

Microsoft has announced it will be using Minecraft to offer free educational content to children after the spread of coronavirus has led to school closures around the world.
In a blog post, Xbox boss Phil Spencer announced a new Education category has been added to the Minecraft Marketplace that gives parents and their kids the chance to download a selection of free in-game creations to assist with their home learning.
This features some of the lessons from Minecraft: Education Edition, such as a tour of the International Space Station or the inside of a human eye.
It also includes ten educational worlds created by members of the Minecraft community, covering topics such as renewable energy, Greek history and marine biology.
The Minecraft Educational Collection launches as a free download today, and will be available until June 30. It will be available in all versions of Minecraft.
Spencer also took the opportunity to reiterate that Xbox One has comprehensive family settings that will help parents and guardians limit the amount of screentime their children have while stuck at home, and prevent them from accessing inappropriate content.

Microsoft's next-generation console appears to have an official release window, coming Thanksgiving 2020.
This is according to an update to the official Xbox Series X page, which revealed the window today.
It does not specify if this date is on Thanksgiving Day -- November 26 -- or if it will launch sometime over the following Black Friday weekend.
The Xbox Series X recently got an in-depth spec reveal, with Phil Spencer stating that the console intends to double, at minimum, the power and speed of the Xbox One X.
Microsoft also plans to keep its first-party titles compatible across all Microsoft hardware, including the new consoles, Xbox One, and Windows PC.

The official specs for Xbox Series X have been revealed, expanding on much of the info Microsoft has announced in the past few months.
GamesIndustry.biz sister site Digital Foundry was invited to the company's Redmond headquarters for an in-depth look at the machine, and has shared a full breakdown of the hardware under the hood of the upcoming console.
The Series X is powered by eight Zen 2 cores at 3.8GHz, a significant improvement on the 2.13GHz achieved by the Xbox One X's eight custom Jaguar cores. As previously announced, its GPU offers 12 teraflops of power -- double the amount of the One X, and considerably more than the 1.4 teraflops in the Xbox One S.
Speaking to Digital Foundry, Microsoft technical fellow Andrew Goossen said this has been a key goal for the platform holder.
"We wanted a minimum doubling of performance over Xbox One X to support our 4K60 and 120 targets," he said. "And we wanted that doubling to apply uniformly to all games."
The console has 16GB of GDDR6 memory, up from the 12GB GDDR5 found in the One X or the 8GB DD3 found in the One S.
Internal storage will be handled by a 1TB SSD, plus a 1TB Expansion Card, and support for external storage via USB 3.2 HDDs.
The article also contains more detail on the recently announced Quick Resume feature, which allows players to switch between multiple suspended games. According to Digital Foundry, the Series X's processor is capable of running four Xbox One S game sessions simultaneously on a single chip.
Quick Resume will support a minimum of three Series X games, although more details will be announced at a later date.

While Sony is keeping its powder dry for what will presumably be a mammoth reveal of PlayStation 5 in a few months -- assuming, of course, that supply chain disruption doesn't derail its launch plans for the system -- Microsoft is taking quite the opposite tack with Xbox Series X. We know rather a lot about the new Microsoft system already, and the firm isn't being shy about info-dumping plenty of additional details about the console and its launch plans on a regular basis.
That strategy is absolutely sensible, because one of the bigger tasks facing Xbox Series X is a communications challenge. Microsoft is doing something very new with this console, committing fully at last to the paradigm shift it has hinted at since the very outset of the Xbox brand -- moving away from the notion of the console as a monolithic, static platform that lasts five to seven years and is then replaced, and embracing the concept of the console as a consistent, eternal platform running on a variety of steadily evolving hardware products.
It's a lot to take in, even for the games industry itself. For consumers, though, who have been used to the former model for decades, and will continue to be offered variations on that model by Sony and Nintendo... Well, it's more than reasonable for Microsoft to take a few months to communicate exactly what it's doing and why it's doing it.

Cxbx Reloaded Git (2020/02/26) is compiled. Cxbx-Reloaded is an emulator for running Microsoft Xbox (and eventually, Chihiro) games on Microsoft Windows. The project began life as a fork of Cxbx with added 64-bit support. Work is currently underway to backport some of the improvements from Dxbx. Cxbx-Reloaded is still pretty unstable, don't expect it to run much at this point.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer believes the industry needs to be more transparent about its problems, if it is to properly address the negative perceptions of those on the "outside looking in."
Spencer's comments were part of a long conversation with Insomniac Games founder Ted Price, who also hosts the Game Maker's Notebook, the official podcast for the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences.
In terms of tackling major issues like fighting toxicity, promoting diversity, and moving towards a healthier working culture, Spencer said he is "very happy with the progress that we all have made jointly."
However, he also acknowledged a tendency to avoid speaking openly and publicly about mistakes, including at conferences like DICE, where Price and Spencer had their conversation.
"One of the things that I used to love about DICE, and I don't see it as much any more... is kinda doing the post-mortem on the big game or the big experience, and what did we learn," Spencer said.
"It wasn't always pretty -- standing up and being unafraid to talk about what went well, where you thought you were gonna go, and where you landed."

Microsoft has revealed a few new details surrounding the Xbox Series X.
In an Xbox Wire post, Xbox head Phil Spencer today said "the next console generation will be defined by more playing and less waiting," and some of the Series X features were designed with that in mind.
For example, the system will have a Quick Resume feature that lets players have multiple games in a suspended state for a near-instant return to action. Like the Xbox One X, the Series X will also support HDMI 2.1, which will let the console automatically set the connected TV or monitor to the mode with the lowest latency and synchronize refresh rates between the display and the game. Spencer also listed previously announced features like the system's SSD storage, 120 frames per second support, and optimized wireless communications with the controller as contributing to a focus on instant immersion.
Under the hood, Spencer said the Series X will have 12 teraflops of GPU performance. That's twice the Xbox One X's total and more than eight times the original Xbox One's capabilities.

At its Galaxy Unpacked 2020 event in San Francisco yesterday, Samsung announced more than just its upcoming lineup of smartphones. In particular, the Korean company announced a partnership with Microsoft to bring a "premium cloud-based game streaming experience to mobile players".
“This is just the beginning of our gaming partnership with Xbox,” explained David S. Park, head of Samsung’s US marketing, on stage. “Both Samsung and Xbox share a vision for bringing great gaming experiences to mobile players around the world. With our 5G-enabled portfolios and Microsoft’s rich history in gaming, we are working closely together to create a premium cloud-based game streaming experience. You’ll hear more about it later this year.”
While more details were scant, it's likely a move to bring Project xCloud to Android-powered Samsung devices. Speaking to The Verge, Kareem Choudhry, Microsoft’s Project xCloud chief, seems to confirm those speculations with the following statement: “We’ve seen positive feedback from Project xCloud preview participants testing a range of Galaxy devices, and it will only get better as we continue to work closely with Samsung on refining the experience. It’s an exciting time to be working on Project xCloud, and we can’t wait to share more about our work with Samsung later this year.”
Park also revealed the upcoming Forza Street for Galaxy devices, with pre-registration open now:

The Xbox Series X may be on the horizon, but Xbox head Phil Spencer hasn't been coy about the fact that hardware is far from the company's only angle into the next generation.
In a recent discussion with GamerTag radio, Spencer discussed the company's plans for the future as a multi-angled approach with the "player at the center." That means, he said, that not only are Xbox Series X consoles and gaming PCs important to Microsoft, but xCloud and Game Pass are equally important components, as they give the ability to play games to those who can't afford higher-end hardware or even $60 games.
That desire to appeal to a much broader audience than just hardcore PC or console players ties directly in with Matt Booty's recent comments on exclusivity -- specifically, that Xbox's future first-party titles would be compatible across all Microsoft hardware, including Xbox One, Windows PC, and future consoles.
Spencer addressed those comments further as he continued:
"Specifically on exclusives or non-exclusives, one of the benefits that we have just sitting inside of Microsoft is we've obviously been close to the development of what's been going on with PC for years," he said. "And I think today if we look at the PC ecosystem, we see some of the best, highest-fidelity games anywhere sitting on high-end gaming PCs, and some of those same games are actually able to run on PCs that are a few years old that have much less capability. And the state of engines and capability today means that developers have the capability to take full use of the gaming hardware that's in front of them.
"Obviously we built our strategy with Series X, we started with that in mind. We wanted to go build a gaming console that was going to be the absolute best that we could deliver on a television, and deliver unique capability to creators that they could use to go create the best games. But you don't want to do that to the exclusion of everybody else and you also want to do that hand-in-hand with developers because developers want to find the widest audience possible. And yes, there are always trade-offs in what you're going to do from developing each individual game.
"And I'm not gonna dictate to every third-party studio what they have to support, but what we see in today's world is that gamers want to play games with their friends regardless of what device those friends are on, people want to have the largest selection of games open to them, and developers want to make use of the best in technology that's available. And we built this plan with all three of those as inputs and we feel really good about where we are."

As Microsoft continues its shift into game streaming and digital-only, Xbox boss Phil Spencer says PlayStation and Nintendo are no longer the platform's main contenders.
Speaking with newly-launched tech publication Protocol, Spencer said the company's Japanese counterparts lack the means to compete with its high-end cloud infrastructure.
"When you talk about Nintendo and Sony, we have a ton of respect for them, but we see Amazon and Google as the main competitors going forward," he said.
"That's not to disrespect Nintendo and Sony, but the traditional gaming companies are somewhat out of position. I guess they could try to recreate Azure, but we've invested tens of billions of dollars in cloud over the years."
Spencer also doubled down on his pro cross-platform stance, saying he would like to work with Nintendo and Sony on breaking down those traditional barriers.
"I don't want to be in a fight over format wars with those guys while Amazon and Google are focusing on how to get gaming to seven billion people around the world," he added. "Ultimately, that's the goal."
Spencer's comments should come as no real surprise, as Microsoft has spent the last three years gradually repositioning itself in the gaming sphere.

January 30th, 2020, 20:51 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft has reported its earnings for Q2 of the current fiscal year, announcing overall growth overshadowing continued declines in the company's gaming segment.
Total revenue reached $36.9 billion for the quarter, up 14% year-over-year, with a net income of $11.6 billion, up 35%. The "More Personal Computing" business segment, of which gaming is a part, saw $13.2 billion in revenue -- up 2% year-over-year.
But gaming is but a small part of that segment, bringing in $3.3 million in Q2, down $905 million (21%) year-over-year. Microsoft attributes this decline to a decrease in hardware sold -- a predictable drop, given that this represents the final holiday season of the current console generation. This drop is also in line with what CFO Amy Hood suggested during the company's Q1 earnings call.
Additionally, Microsoft reported that Xbox content and services revenue was down 11% ($295 million), attributing the drop to a "high prior year comparable, primarily from a third-party title." It is possible that this refers to Red Dead Redemption 2 (as suggested by NPD analyst Mat Piscatella on Twitter) or Fortnite.
The drop was offset by subscription growth, though Microsoft no longer reports Xbox Live MAUs beginning with its Q1 results for this year. At last count, that number was at 65 million, and Microsoft has said it has grown over the last two quarters since. In fact, during the company's Q2 earnings call, Microsoft announced that Xbox Live MAUs reached a new high record in Q2, and that Xbox Game Pass subscriptions more than doubled in Q2 alone.
