Bill Gates has questioned Nintendo's strategy for Wii, saying "Look at the resolution you get with a controlled experience like that. Say to yourself, how in terms of using a game for a long period of time, what kind of accuracy and capability do you want?
"Look at the classic Nintendo positioning Look at the graphics. Look at Nintendo's execution in terms of online capability... If you want to play online, get an Xbox. We're not standing still," Gates told the San Jose Mercury News.
"Look at what you saw today connecting up the world to the Windows PC. Do you expect Nintendo to rev up a team to create cross-device gaming and tool kits to develop those things? Not very likely."
But according to the MS boss Nintendo "clearly did some things right" in the past, such as teaming up with UK-based developer Rare. "In my household, everybody plays Viva Piñata," he confessed.
Outside of competitor sniping, in the interview Gates also shared his thoughts on the original Xbox, observing that Microsoft's last-gen console was "20 per cent better" that its rivals.
However, he continued saying "It didn't matter. We were a year late, didn't have the best games. We had this bigger box. We did have online. We didn't switch positions on that."
But on the Xbox 360 he says Microsoft's strategy is "working perfectly. We wanted to be the guy with the small box that costs less. We wanted to have the most games. We wanted to play to our software strength, and tools and online.
"We wanted to swap positions with Sony. We wanted to not be a year late, not be a big box, not be a more expensive box. How are we doing on that?"

The latest Halo 3 update has appeared on the official Bungie website, and this week it's all about the assault rifle.
"The MA5C 7.62mm rifle is an air-cooled, gas-operated, magazine fed weapon designed for automatic fire," the update reads. "The weapon has an attached electronics suite that provides information on rounds remaining in magazine, compass heading, as well as several other "housekeeping" functions."
This time around the power of Halo 3's remixed assault rifle is described as being "somewhere between the original MA5B Assault Rifle and the BR55 Battle Rifle", with clip capacity "reduced to the 32 rounds that you're used to seeing in the BR55" and the rifle's range has been "slightly improved over its predecessor to make it more formidable as an Assault Rifle."

The playable demo of Call of Duty 3 is available now and exclusively with Issue 17 of Xbox 360: The Official Xbox Magazine, which is the Crackdown review issue.

The latest Fable 2 developer update has wielded the first images of Lionhead's 360 RPG sequel - and if you're excited by pixels and half-finished ground textures, you're in for a treat.
"It wasn't long before the cube was replaced with the mesh of a human, giving birth to the short-lived but much-loved crotch cam," the update reads, with a screenshot of what appears to be a polygonal package.
"During this time our meshes had become textured and our camera was no longer nestled inside someone's crotch. Tiny little dots are actually visual representations of life forms in Albion, spending their days playing a game of tag amongst each other. It wasn't very long before these dots were replaced by the original Hero from Fable, but just as placeholder artwork"
But, if you look a bit harder through the mischief Lionhead offers some more general information on Fable 2's progress, noting that it is adding "functionality, slicker visuals and most importantly a lot of new features" as development progresses.
Fable 2 is expected to exit Lionhead's doors sometime next year. Or the year after. Or the year after that...

Despite 1UP's claims to the contrary, EA has issued a statement denying the existence of Crysis for the Xbox 360. The information originated from a 1UP podcast, in which the 1UP staff claimed to have communicated with Crytek about the existence of a completely different and retooled version of Crysis for the 360 (the reasons for the retooling stem from the 360's lack of DirectX 10 support). EA states that 1UP's information was the result of a "miscommunication" and that no plans for a 360 version of Crysis have been announced. Furthermore, EA expects a retraction to be made soon.
While there may have been some kind of miscommunication involved here, we're not buying that EA isn't working on a 360 version of Crysis. Considering its reputation as the prettiest game evar, we find it hard to believe that EA isn't going to leverage this franchise on every platform imaginable. Crysis will likely hit the broadest spectrum possible, from the 360 all the way down to mobile phones. After all, if EA didn't spread Crysis as far as possible, then they wouldn't be EA.

This could be either the best or worst idea they've ever had, but credit to them for trying it: Microsoft are opening up the comments floodgates. Major Nelson, take it away:
I get a couple of hundred emails each week suggesting new Xbox Live features and I pass those onto the developers here in the building...so we are listening. But now that Andre has kicked off the conversation again...I'd like to take it bigger: what are your suggestions for Xbox 360, Xbox.com and Xbox Live teams? Let's open it up to all three areas.
While this PR amnesty might result in some cool new XBL features (or, God forbid, 360's that don't break down), I feel sorry for whoever has to sort the genuine comments from the fanboy spam. If you've got an idea for anything Xbox related, why don't you make the most of this opportunity and go send them something constructive. You don't get a chance like this very often.

Retail has noted a surge of interest in free-roaming action game Crackdown, since the announcement that the game disc will include a beta key to the multiplayer testing of Bungie's highly-anticipated shooter Halo 3.
Specialist chain GAME has told GamesIndustry.biz that pre-orders for Crackdown have risen by 25 per cent since Microsoft unveiled the initiative.
"Halo 3 is one of the most highly anticipated Xbox 360 titles for 2007 and our customers are hungry to get hold of it," commented Alex Croft, MD of GAME Group's online business.
"Halo 3 beta is a great way for gamers to actually influence the making of the game and will ensure the production of a truly amazing game," he added.
Crackdown, from developer Realtime Worlds, is due for release February 23 in Europe. Copies of the game which include the Halo 3 beta key will be housed in specially marked packaging.

Tony Hawk developer Neversoft is advertising vacancies to work on future Guitar Hero games, suggesting that the game may now have two studios working on it.
Guitar Hero hit the big time with both the first and second instalments of the game and the series only looks to grow with an 80s version, that we've been told is currently in development.
Harmonix has been responsible for all Guitar Hero games so far but speculation is mounting that Tony Hawk developer Neversoft has been brought on board by Activision to develop further versions.
Whether this means that Neversoft will develop all Guitar Hero games going forward or that Neversoft and Harmonix will now create different versions is unclear, thanks to Activision staying tight-lipped on the subject.
A source close to the game has told CVG that "if there are now two developers working side by side on different versions of the game, it can only be a good thing for fans."
Basically the turn around of creating songs and localising them for the European market would increase and we'd get more tracks to air guitar to. And that's why it's a good thing. Two developers mean more songs and expansions.
Expect an announcement from Activision soon.

Electronic Arts today announced its launch onto Microsoft’s Xbox Live Arcade with Boom Boom Rocket. The game is a hypno tic rhythm music game conceived by EA’s Pogo casual games design team and developed by Bizarre Creations (Project Gotham Racing 3 and XBLA hit, Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved) to Xbox Live Arcade. The game is scheduled to go live Spring 2007 and is EA’s first title on Xbox Live Arcade.
In Boom Boom Rocket, players trigger rockets to the beat of the music while travelling through a 3D cityscape. The better the player times the explosions, the more spectacular the fireworks effects. The fireworks are choreographed to 10 original tracks created by Ian Livingstone. Players can play in single player mode or go head-to-head against a friend on the same console.
The game features three modes of gameplay: Normal, Speed and multiplayer head-to-head. Each song is choreographed into three skill levels to ensure that everyone can join in the fun. Successfully chain fireworks to fill the bonus meter and activate the psychedelic bonus mode for extra points.
Players can unlock new firework designs by mastering each music track. You can also utilise the connected online element and see how their scores compare with other players on the Boom Boom Rocket leaderboard.

Ubisoft is giving us our first look at the PC version of its sequel Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 via five, count 'em five, screenshots. We've uploaded them here for you to pass mince pies over. In addition, the publisher's also fired out new screens from the Xbox 360 version of the tactical shooter follow-up. Which we've uploaded here too. Enjoy.
Here's the scoop on GRAW 2's plot from Ubisoft: "Following the failure of the coup d'etat in Mexico City Mexican rebels have gathered their remaining forces along the US border. Lead your team of elite Special Forces for the first time on US soil - straddling the border between Juarez, Mexico and El Paso, Texas. The Ghosts have less than 72 hours to stop a nuclear attack. You are the last line of defense and must do what it takes to be victorious."
Both versions of the game are down for release on March 9. A PS3 iteration is down for the console's launch in the UK

Modding has its hazards - but a nasty cut from a power tool can now be completely avoided thanks to the Talismoon Window Kit Cutting Tool. This product is a great alternative that doesn't need any power, and the fact that it is a hand tool makes it easier to follow straight lines than an overpowered rotary tool. Also conveniently avoids any worries of slipping and taking an accidental 'bite' out your Xbox's finish. Easy enough for any age to use, and very difficult to hurt yourself during use.
This tool was built to custom specifications for its specific use with the xbox 360. Other tools of this type will not have the necessary clearance to work on the thicker plastic of the Xbox 360. In addition to being useful for cutting windows, it can also be used to cut fan holes and other types of egress.
Compatible with all consoles on the market today, it is the perfect tool for Xbox 360 tuning!

A Ghostbusters game for 360 is in development but is currently on hold due to licensing issues says developer ZootFly.
A statement from the team reads: "We are very glad to see the overwhelming response to the Ghostbusters prototype movies. What you've seen is indeed in-game footage of early prototypes on the Xbox 360, running on ZootFly's proprietary engine. Due to licensing issues, further development of the Ghostbusters game hit a bump on the road, but everybody here at ZootFly is working actively on resolving the challenges with the owners of the Ghostbusters IP."
The team has a second project running to keep them busy while lawyers sift through the paperwork. "Not to lose the momentum, a part of the ZootFly team is currently working on an original game called TimeO, which is closely related to Ghostbusters," continues the statement. "The game follows the adventures of two die-hard New Yorkers. They get trapped deep in the shadow world of a parallel New York. The city itself is a war machine threatening to wipe out our world and they have three days to stop it."
As soon as the Ghostbusters IP issue has been resolved, the whole team will go back to working on Ghostbusters.

In a report titled 'Spotlight on Television 2.0 Leaders: Microsoft Corporation' published by Emerging Media Dynamics, Microsoft is estimated to make an astonishing $726 Million from Xbox Live movie and TV revenue by 2011.
Emerging Media Dynamics expects the Xbox Live video download service to grow massively over the next 12 months, with combined revenue of TV shows and movies via Xbox Live touted at $92.25 million in 2007, growing further each year until total sales top the $726 million figure in 2011, it is predicted.
Xbox Live Video Marketplace is currently only available in North America, where Xbox 360 users can download standard and high-definition television shows and 'rent' movies for single-viewing only.
There's currently no news on when - or if - Video Marketplace will make it over to the UK, but seeing as the recently-accounced Xbox 360 IPTV servicehas been confirmed for our shores, we'd be surprised if Video Marketplace service didn't make the trip as well.

THQ has penned a deal with LLC to publish games based on the Ultimate Fighting Championship brand up to the year 2011.
Watching UFC is a bit like standing outside your local chippy after the pubs have closed and watching the chavs kick each other senseless. It's brutal brawling at its best and not for the faint hearted. It's almost like real wrestling.
Under the terms of the deal, THQ can now create UFC games for all current and next generation consoles, PC and handheld platforms.
The publisher is looking top pack each game with online, downloadable and multiplayer capabilities where it can.

A version of stunning PC first-person shooter Crysis is coming to Xbox 360, according to US games site 1UP.
According to reports in the site's podcast stemming from the Consumer Electronics Show, various site contributors were able to grill the game's developers over the supposed console version of Crysis.
Apparently it won't be a straight port but rather a totally new game that shares the same universe, much in the same vein as the console versions of Far Cry.
When we reached for the phone Crysis Publisher Electronic Arts was unavailable for comment.

Earlier this week Missouri sheriff's deputies found 13-year-old William Ownby, who had been allegedly kidnapped while getting off of his school bus.
When police searched the home of alleged kidnapper Michael Devlin, 41, of suburban St. Louis, they found both Ben and Shawn Hornbeck, 15, who had disappeared four years ago while riding his bike.
On Sunday, GamerTagRadio and GamerTagPics broke the news that Devlin appears to have an Xbox Live Gamertag and that he had created a profile on GamerTagPics which appears to feature a photo of Hornbeck standing in front of Devlin's apartment.
When contacted Monday by Kotaku, a St. Louis Post-Disptach reporter confirmed that the photo of Hornbeck used for the profile did appear to have been taken in front of Devlin's apartment.
According to the stats of gamertag DevilDevlin, the account has been used to play two dozen games and the last game played was Saints Row, which was accessed on Jan. 12, the day the two children were rescued. On Jan. 11, DevilDevlin played Samurai Warriors 2 and some Final Fantasy XI.
Messages to the account have not been returned, nor have emails to Microsoft to see if the Xbox Live team has been contacted by law enforcement about the account activity.
