PlayStation-centric US magazine PSM has put PS3 and Xbox 360 through a series of rigorous tests in a "definitive head-to-head comparison," and has come out with what must be a surprising result for subscribers: the next-gen console war is a dead heat.
PSM offers a balanced case for pledging your allegiance to either platform, even roping in the editor-in-chief of the US Official Xbox Magazine to defend Xbox 360. Although, with one section pointing out that "PS3 wins if... You're a loner who doesn't plan to use community features much," it seems the barbed comments have been reserved for PS3.
After admitting that "360 is more impressive [in terms of having 'big' games]" and the Xbox interface "offers a lot more functionality than PS3's," we had to double check the flannel panel to make sure that Peter Moore hadn't sneaked a spot as the month's special guest writer.

Interesting news on the Zune front: a friendly tipster's buddy works at a Microsoft call center and handles Zune-related issues. Apparently they've received numerous reports of the Zune screen cracking for no apparent reason, after being left charging overnight. Our tipster's friend conjectures that the lithium ion battery -- which resides right behind the top half of the Zune's screen -- is expanding from overheating and putting too much pressure on the screen, causing it to crack. Unfortunately, Microsoft currently regards the issue as outside warranty coverage, leaving the victims with a broken Zune and nowhere to turn. Of course, this could all be off the mark, and it might turn out that a few Zune-droppers conveniently made up the same story to try and get a free repair, but if there is such a battery-expanding problem, we'd sure like to hear about it -- any of y'alls experiencing screen crackage of a similar nature?

Remember those little Xbox 360 games that Burger King gave away with its value meals for a bit? They certainly do - their second quarter results were up by 40 percent on account of them.
"We're consistently delivering strong results by staying focused on our global 'Go Forward' growth plan," said CEO John W. Chidsey, who's a proper chief executive. There's no transition period to hide behind with burgers, kids.
"Our brand and our great food continue to resonate with our restaurant guests. Specifically, our BK Value Menu, as well as our innovative Xbox game collection - which was the best-selling video game of the holiday season, with more than 3.2 million copies sold - increased both sales and restaurant traffic," Chidsey explained.
We've not been into Burger King for about eight years (they make the doors too small), but then we don't have to, since you can nab them on US eBay. Why bother? Gamerpoints! Big, juicy gamerpoints. 200 per game, of which there were three - Sneak King, Pocketbike Racer and Big Bumpin'.
UK-based developer Blitz Games has previously said the games could come to Europe, but there's no word on that in Burger King's wholesome financial report. We'll let you know.

January 30th, 2007, 17:12 Posted By: wraggster
The first internet reports have streamed in this morning on a supposed Xbox 360 achievement reward program, which claims say will shower gamers with real-life prizes for their 360 gaming skills.
The rumour emanates from community blog Unscripted 360, which claims to have accessed documentation that exposes the achievement reward program, supposedly exposing Microsoft's plans to team up with different sponsors to provide gamers with goodies for certain achievements.
Microsoft was unfortunately unavailable for comment when we picked up the dog and bone, though speaking to Team Xbox a US spokesperson noted that while it wouldn't comment on rumours: "Xbox is always exploring ideas for how we can reward our loyal customers."
Sounds promising, but what about all the games (cough)EA(cough) where the points are more or less given away? How's that proof of your skills?

As if it's not already almost-certainly being tinkered with behind the scenes, Epic games has hinted at a sequel to its multi-million selling shooter Gears of War, in an interview with CVG.
Speaking at last week's Midway Gamers' Day in Las Vegas, Unreal Tournament 3 producer Jeff Morris joked that Epic may be the victim of its own success: "It's funny because I think Gears started after a lot of people were a little fatigued working on UT, and now they're all probably making Gears for the rest of their lives, so the shoe has turned.
"I read somewhere that every sequel sells 10 percent less or more than the previous did," Morris continued, "and yeah we'd love to sell another 3 million copies of another Gears product. Success is an addiction."
So there will be a second Gears of War then? "If people want another one I'm sure there'll be another one but there are certainly no announcements." And yes - we do want another one.

Siliconera reports that copies of Riot Act (a.k.a. Crackdown) will contain download codes for Halo 3 Beta, extending Microsoft's promotion to Japanese gamers. Peter Moore recently reiterated to IGN that Microsoft is "not going to back down" in its aggressive campaign to popularize the Xbox brand in Japan.
Including the download code inside Riot Act retail boxes is a friendly gesture, but it's not going to generate as many sales as the promotion will in North America or Europe, where Halo is a dominant franchise; and FPS in general, a leading genre. Still, Moore insists that the beta promotion isn't about boosting Crackdown's exposure, but rather, is simply an opportunity to pair potentially M-rated Halo 3 with an M-rated title. Guess that explains why Viva Piñata didn't include keys to the beta.
Riot Act will be available on February 22 in Japan, two days after the game is released in North America. Halo 3 Beta download codes will also be included with the European version of Crackdown.

One of the Llamma's Game Console forum readers has upped pics of their sweet new case mod.
The mod includes red lighting, a clear air tunnel, see-through DVD drive cover, oh and lots of blood spatter. That's spatter, not splatter. Let me know if you know the difference.

Microsoft's Peter Moore has declared that there's nothing about PlayStation 3 which could give it the edge over Xbox 360 in the next-gen console war.
"I really don't know what I would look at there that we're really missing," he told IGN.
"I look at the games and I feel really good at where we stand from a portfolio point of view. The online service, they're still trying to get it up to speed and there's nothing really there that I can really point to that I wish we had.
"You know, certainly the price point of the PS3 isn't something that I want to emulate. It's very difficult for me to point to anything there that I think we're missing right now," he concluded.
When it comes to Microsoft's other rival in the console space, Moore said he is "certainly a big fan" of the Nintendo Wii. However, he described the company's strategy as "what Nintendo needs to do", suggesting that "it ties directly into their strong intellectual property that is more youth oriented and more family oriented".
Microsoft recently met its target of selling more than 10 million consoles to retail by the end of 2006, but has cut its shipping forecast for the months up to July from 13 - 15 million units to 12 million units.

January 29th, 2007, 17:22 Posted By: wraggster
Four of the big videogame publishers saw shares drop on Friday, following Microsoft's announcement that it was to cut shipments of the Xbox 360 from between 13 and 15 million, to 12 million units.
Major third-party publishers Electronic Arts, Activision, THQ and Take Two have all supported the Xbox 360 with a range of high-profile titles, some of which are exclusive to the console.
Saint's Row publisher THQ was the worst hit, with shares falling four per cent, or US $1.25, to US $30.48. Take Two, the company behind Prey and Rockstar's Table Tennis, saw shares drop 2.3 per cent, or 40 cents, to US $16.84.
Shares in Electronic Arts were down 1.7 per cent, to US $48.04, while Activision's stock fell 2.3 per cent to US $16.71 on Nasdaq.
In a note to clients, American Technology Research analyst PJ McNealy highlighted concern over revised results from hardware manufacturers, and the pressure it puts on the supporting publishers.
"Videogame publishers will be under pressure today after Microsoft cut its life-to-date shipment," he said on Friday.
"There is investor concern about a re-set of expectations around both the Xbox 360 and the Sony PlayStation 3," he revealed.

Xbox 360 racer Forza Motorsport 2 is roaring off the UK start grid this summer, Microsoft has informed us this morning.
We queried the publisher on a release date for these shores after getting confirmation that the game will be out in North America in May. Microsoft told us that currently summer is the only date it has, but we'd hope that's narrowed down in the not-too-distant future.
Forza 2 is all about hardcore racing, featuring the likes of advanced simulation physics, an all-new damage system and a heap of customisable motors that you can whip around famous circuits.

January 29th, 2007, 17:09 Posted By: wraggster
Xbox VP Peter Moore has been talking about Microsoft's eternal quest for dominance in the Japanese market with Xbox 360.
"I think we need to continue to be a competitor as aggressively as we have been since the day we launched [in Japan]. Little things make your day a little better. This morning when I woke up, seeing Gears of War as one of the top ten selling games in Japan, on top of Blue Dragon's success over the holidays, is vindication of a company that understand what it needs to stick to the task.
"I think we are seeing progress in Japan. With Lost Odyssey still to come, I think we feel real good about our ability to compete and compete aggressively in the Japanese market. It's not easy, let me make that clear. It's not easy. But we're not going to back down just because it's not easy."

Midway today announced that "Hour of Victory" is currently in development exclusively for the Xbox 360 and is expected to be available this summer.
Built using the Unreal Engine 3.0, Hour of Victory allows you to sneak into enemy territory as a covert operative, storm the gates as a British commando, or snipe from afar as an Army ranger – each character’s unique attributes will be needed for the fulfillment of the overall objective.
Yeah, another WW2 shooter we don't have enough of them!
