US online retailer Gamestop has listed Mystwalker's Blue Dragon RPG for a June 5 release in the US. Unfortunately that means we might not see it until the end of the year.
Microsoft has yet to give us any official release date for the popular Japanese 360 role-playing game over here but the game went down a storm in Japan and we'd expect a similar debut over here.
If Gamestop's suggestion that Blue Dragon will land in the US on June 5 turns out to be true then UK and Europe wouldn't see it until the end of the year at the earliest, given that all the text would have to be translated in several different languages.
And we know how long that can take... Final Fantasy III STILL isn't out over here yet on DS.

The latest update from Bungie on the progress of Halo 3 has revealed that a newly released build of the sequel is virtually level-complete, which is allowing the developer to start "testing properly for difficulty and length." Listen very carefully, and you can hear the sound of 'closer, it's coming closer' echoing around the videogaming ether.
In the update, it's explained too that layers of detail are now being added to Halo 3's campaign at an astonishing speed, Bungie's Frank O'Connor describing his experience when "tooling around in a huge indoor environment and admiring the light shining softly through the dirty skylights above".
"I was getting up close to a chain link fence and enjoying the rusty steel texture visible on the quarter-centimeter wide chain link... I noticed that there's a lot of extruded detail - that is to say, 3D objects on what would normally be flat surfaces. Think at the simplest level, a real drainpipe against a wall, but more impressive were these brilliantly done, and wonderfully conceived things like taut steel cables, the aforementioned chain link fencing, realistic electrical and communications wiring and just the random garbage that covers the world - all lovingly recreated with a futuristic bent."
Adding that lighting "is still being introduced in new and exciting ways" and talking about work with in-game water, O'Connor then goes on to discuss combat dialogue and says that "We have a lot more characters this time around, with more Marines, Grunts, Brutes, Elites and more to write dialog for", adding, "The acting roster is being filled out now, and the people involved are going to be amazing folks to work with. True talents, old and new, famous and obscure. It's going to be a riot."
"...one thing I noticed is that the sheer number of characters on screen, talking simultaneously, affects the flavor of combat. Hearing three grunts panic while two charge you, yelling, makes combat feel way more intense. Grunts are still funny, but it's not so funny when they're winging plasma 'nades at you like The Big Unit after a bad haircut. The number of times I have been taken by surprise by a gang of angry Grunts - I can't even tell you. And don't even get me started on Brutes and Jackals."
He also reveals there's "a working, controllable version of a brand new vehicle", featuring in the latest Halo 3 build, explains that the difficulty levels are implemented in single-player - but "Nothing like ready, or finished" - and that new voice announcements for multiplayer will accompany original favourite announcements "so you'll be aurally rewarded or punished for various multiplayer antics.".

From adamthole.com
After wanting to play around with an accelerometer for a long time, I finally thought of an idea that would warrant me purchasing one, modifying an Xbox 360 controller to make one of the analog sticks controlled by the tilting motion of the Xbox controller.....
Here is a video of the finished Xbox 360 tilt controller. Not a whole lot new in this video except a short (cheesy) clip of me, the correct pronunciation of “Thole”, and clips of Full Auto and Crimson Skies with the finished controller. Enjoy!
you can follow all the steps he took to make the Tilt Controller Mod on From his site

Interview from Gamepro, heres the juicy part:
GP: Back to PS3 hardware: has it been challenging to work with the PS3 Cell CPU?
Kojima: Of course I don't actually work with all the programs, so I can't tell you specifically what's difficult. But overall I think it is difficult, of course. But if it's easy and simple, then how can you differentiate from other games? Other people will do the same thing as you. Therefore, we're trying to use [the Cell's] difficulty to create something different.
If I say too much, Mr. Kutaragi might get really upset. I think that the PS3 is difficult to work with, but so was the PS2.
GP: Is MGS4 still planned as an exclusive PS3 game? Do you have any interest in Xbox 360 development?
Kojima: Well, yes, I do have strong interest in creating something for the Xbox 360. In the US and Europe, it is selling, and I think it will sell a lot this year as well. I'm a fan of Gears of War as well, it's very interesting.
Frankly speaking, I want to create something on the PC. It's a multi-platform [format]. I've been regularly studying work on the PC anyways, and I want to provide something as a world-wide platform because of the consequences with timing on the PlayStation platforms, MGS4 is actually for the PS3 only so far.
GP: If you ever made an Xbox 360, would you find it difficult to work with because it uses a standard DVD?
Kojima: It's not necessarily challenging or difficult, it's just a matter of how we do it. It might be a couple of discs, or possibly a new form of dual-layer.

Thanks to yet another Microsoft antitrust suit in Iowa, subpoenaed emails have revealed a moment of candidness and clarity at Microsoft in 2003 when Jim Allchin (Co-President, Platforms & Services Division, depicted left) and Amir Majidimehr (Corporate Vice President, Consumer Media Technology Group) had an email thread that basically summarized the portable media device playing field then, and for the most part, now. Some choice quites from the email back-and-forth:
Jim: title "sucking on media players"; regarding a current Creative player (probably a Nomad, perhaps a Zen Touch): "My goodness it's terrible... What I don't understand though is I was told the new Creative Labs device would be comparable to Apple. That is so not the case."
Amir: "Now you feel our pain." He suggests giving cash bonuses for partners that come up with decent devices. In the instance that doesn't work: "it is time for us to roll up our sleeves and do our own hardware."
And of course so they did, with great hype and great failure to immediately capture market share, the Zune was born many years later -- far too late by most accounts, but hey, you've gotta start somewhere. Still, it's funny to think that for these guys rolling up their sleeves and doing their own hardware means taking an off the shelve portable media OS (PMC 2), getting Toshiba to make a modified Gigabeat, and cutting some seriously anti-consumer deals with major labels.

Over at the education site Game Career Guide, they've got an in-depth primer of Microsoft's XNA, including interviews with Julie Ellen and Joe Nalewabau of Microsoft about the PC and Xbox 360 indie/student homebrew construction tool, as well as chats with two developers (Benjamin Nitschke and Alex Okafor) who have worked with XNA to some notable effect. Microsoft's Ellie claims of the efforts: 'Homebrew and independent developers are often very talented and have lots of creative ideas. Being able to officially write games directly for a retail console right at home is a first and could be very empowering for them. For the homebrew and indie scene to succeed we need to provide two things: great tools and access to a large audience. We're working on both.'

Heres an excerpt:
Have you ever been in an all-out, balls-to-wall fight with a monstrous alien craft far more powerful and dangerous than your puny self and, through sheer luck, taken it down? In Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars, you're gonna get that chance.
When we visited Electronic Arts last week to play Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars, we were witness to such an event. In a fight between the GDI (Global Defense Initiative) and the Alien faction, the human base was in bad shape. An alien aerial force swooped in, wiped out a defense post outside the base, and was threatening an end-game run. Just to double the agony, the Alien forces then sent an Alien Walker, a towering three-headed walker that can shoot in three different directions simultaneously, our way. Somehow, and after huge losses to the base, we downed it. Then, real casually, EA Senior Producer Michael Glosecki said, "Hey, if you call up some engineers, you can re-wire that walker to fight on your side." And with that, the time in our demo ended. "But wait…we can do what?"
The GDI move in with super tankers to rough up some palm trees.
Command & Conquer, since its birth at Westwood Studios more than 10 years ago, has commanded a huge following on the PC. Now, in late spring, Xbox 360 owners will see the newest iteration of the real-time strategy land on this next-generation console. Following its foray into the unexplored RTS genre on consoles with The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth 2, EA is once again rallying up troops to fight online. Only this time, they aren't elves and wizards, trolls and goblins, magic users and monsters. No, this time it's a high-tech war teeming with the coolest futuristic war machines you'll ever control.

It was only a little over a month ago that we reported on Gears of War sales reaching 2 million worldwide, and now Microsoft has officially announced yet another million copies to add to the tally. That's something like 40,000+ copies of the game sold a day.
"Like blockbuster titles from Microsoft's Halo franchise and the Grand Theft Auto and Zelda franchises, Gears of War is tracking to be one of the best-selling video games of all time and has established itself as the most successful new IP of the next generation," said Jeff Bell, corporate vice president of Global Marketing, Interactive Entertainment Business Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft Corp.
Not so sure I'd place the game in the same rank as Zelda or Halo, but the young franchise certainly is off to an interesting start. Ask me again after I've played through part 2.

It's official: record companies don't like you. After all that griping about signing up for the Zune music store -- and keep in mind that these record companies receive monies for selling songs here -- that resulted in Universal Music Group getting some sort of fat royalty check from Microsoft for Zune sales, not to mention whatever negotiations went on behind closed doors to come up with that ridiculously minimal "three days or three plays" sharing scheme, a couple of labels have once again gone out of their way to make life hard on you. It appears Sony Music and Universal Music Group are marking certain artists of theirs as "prohibited" for sharing, meaning that just because you've paid for a song, and even managed to find another Zune user on the planet Earth, doesn't mean you'll necessarily get to beam that JoJo track to another Zune via WiFi magics. In a non-scientific sampling of popular artists by Zunerama and Zune Thoughts, it looks like it's roughly 40-50 percent of artist that fall under this prohibited banner, and the worst news is that there's no warning that a song might be unsharable until you actually try to send it and fail. Oh well, maybe you can just hum a few bars or something -- just make sure the labels don't hear you!

When Mercury news reporter Dean Takahashi spoke with Bill Gates at CES, the wide-ranging conversation turned to gaming, and Bill had a few harsh words for Sony and its cluelessness. When asked if any of Sony's next-generation PS3 games would look better than the Xbox 360's Halo 3, Gates replied:
"No. They were going to have the Cell be the video processor. But they didn't know what they were doing. They said the Cell is the video processor. But they turned to Nvidia at the last minute, but Nvidia can't do embedded DRAM. Go look at the bandwidth problems. Go ask the guys running ... now. They took their year and burned it by not having a decent CPU strategy and then turning to Nvidia at the last minute. It's a very unusual thing."
Gates also admitted that the release of the first Xbox was a year late, and didn't have the best games then, either. Overall, it's a surprisingly candid interview, with lots of good comments about IPTV on the Xbox 360, too.

Flagship Studios' PC shooter-RPG Hellgate: London looks set for Xbox 360 something in the future
Next-Gen.biz has posted an interview with Zach Karlsson, director of business development at Namco-Bandai (which is co-publishing Hellgate with EA), in which he was asked about the likelihood of a 360 version of the game.
Although Karlsson wouldn't confirm its existence, the site says he admitted "that it's highly unlikely that such a notion is far from the company's planning calendar."

The release of the latest Call of Duty 3 map pack has been tarnished today by a rather large bug; according to various reports, once you've purchased and downloaded the update you can't actually play it. We wonder how that one slipped past Microsoft?
Publisher Activision has since responded to the bug reports, claiming that it is already working on a solution:
"We understand that there are problems with the Valor map pack once it is downloaded - we are working closely with Microsoft on this right now, and we will have the issue resolved as soon as we possibly can. Please hold tight, and I will follow up with an update as soon as we're closer to a solution."
Have you managed to get the pack working? Let us know in the comments section below.

Microsoft's file size limit on Xbox Live Arcade titles has been increased from 50MB to 250MB, internet reports claim.
This is all according to a report on 1UP.com, which says that Microsoft could increase the previously-strict file size limit again to 450MB, allowing for larger and more complex XBLA titles such as Konami's upcoming Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - the first title to exceed the previous 50MB cap at 96MB.
Of course the new file size limit also means that heftier Arcade titles might not be able to fit on the 64MB-large Xbox 360 memory units, forcing Core owners to pick up a hard drive to play titles such as Castlevania.
A Microsoft spokesperson said on the report: "Aside from the exception we granted for 'Castlevania: Symphony of the Night,' we have not announced any plans to alter the file size standard for Xbox Live Arcade games. However, adjusting the size limit is certainly an option in the future, and as always, we are listening to feedback both from gamers and developers on what will provide the best user experience."
"Whatever choice we make, we will hold a position that provides for the best possible Xbox Live Arcade gameplay experience."

Microsoft's Chris Satchell claims that "over half" of the people who have bought Xbox 360 since its November 2005 launch did not buy an Xbox 1.
"We've sold 10.4 million, but the stat you may not have heard is that over half of those sales are from people that didn't own an Xbox 1," Satchell - general manager of Microsoft's game developer group - told our sister site GamesIndustry.biz in an interview published today.
"So there're lots of new people coming in, which kind of surprises you. What we're actually finding is that our customer set is broadening, which we think is important."
That's a view well known to be shared by Nintendo, which has made significant strides with its DS and - it believes - Wii business by seeking to broaden its target demographic rather than simply selling more games and systems to existing fans.
However Satchell's comments are likely to be questioned in some quarters because Microsoft has already publicly admitted that it hasn't really sold 10.4 million consoles to consumers.
Speaking to gi.biz at CES, Peter Moore said that in the context of its own figures, "'Sold' means that we're a wholesaler of hardware and we sell it to a retailer, and that's the important criteria."
Meanwhile, recent NPD Group figures put Xbox 360's US installed base at 4.5 million, with Wii at 1.1 million and PlayStation 3 finding its feet with around 690,000 US owners by the end of 2006.
Whatever the real 360 number though, the fact that Microsoft is claiming "over half" as new consumers is likely to cause concern amongst its console rivals and surprise commentators - some of whom have been vocal in their belief that Xbox 360's early success is down to enthusiasm from the existing 24-million-strong pool of Xbox 1 owners, and not necessarily thanks to growth in Microsoft's console business.

Bethesda's Oblivion expansion Shivering Isles - which we broke first word on earlier this month - is due out this spring on Xbox 360 and PC.
As revealed previously, the expansion packs 30-plus hours of new Elder Scrolls adventuring and presents players with a new plane of Oblivion to explore - the realm of Sheogorath, the Daedric Prince of Madness.
"Within the Realm of Sheogorath, players can explore the two extreme sides of the god's madness - the sublimely creative and the completely psychotic. Something is happening to the Shivering Isles and Sheogorath himself looks to you to be his champion and defend his realm and its inhabitants from destruction. Do you have the strength to survive his trials, tame a realm fraught with paranoia and despair, and wear the mantle of a God?", says Bethesda.
The developer's additionally explained that Shivering Isles "features a bizarre landscape split between the two sides - Mania and Dementia -filled with vast, twisting dungeons mirroring the roots of the trees they are buried within." Players can expect to encounter plenty of new creatures "including hideous insects, Flesh Atronachs, skeletal Shambles, amphibious Grummites" and the dev's also stuffing in the likes of new items, ingredients and spells - "and have the talented craftsmen of Crucible and Bliss forge new armor and weapons just for you."
Apparently, the Xbox 360 version of Shivering Isles is only going to be released through Xbox Live, while the PC version will be your vanilla retail release.
