You know, there is something funny about electronics sometimes. If you are an Xbox 360 owner it is likely that you have heard of the blinking red lights of doom. This is where the lights around the power button illuminate red meaning the 360 is done busted. Someone managed to fix this problem by doing the unthinkable—overheating the 360, in a way. The red light broken 360 was fixed by wrapping the console in a towel, turning it on, letting it run for 10 minutes, then turning it off and removing the towel. For some people overheating the 360 fixed the problem entirely, for some others it fixed the problem temporarily. Regardless, it rendered your $400 console useful again.

Reuters is quoting unnamed "industry sources" in a story about Microsoft's plans to launch the Xbox 360 in China in "the next few months," possibly in time for February's Chinese New Year. According to the report, Microsoft is in talks with Chinese internet providers and government ministries to get the approvals necessary to import and sell the system in the tightly-controlled country.
It's no secret that Microsoft wants to enter the Chinese market -- they publicly stated as much in 2005 and launched the Xbox 360 in semi-autonomous Hong Kong in early 2006. Getting into China would greatly expand the Xbox 360's quickly growing worldwide footprint, which already includes 36 countries, some of which had never seen a console launch before. Launching in China would also mean dealing with the country's rampant software piracy, a problem that has dogged Chinese releases of the PS2 and PSP. Still, a booming market of over 1.3 billion potential customers is too juicy for Microsoft to pass up.

Blacksite: Area 51 is the confirmed codename for developer Midway's second extraterrestrial actioner, due to crash-land on PS3 and Xbox 360 in the summer, complete with blinding visuals, superb squad controls and super-smart AI.
Taking its name from a covert military term, this fresh foray into the successful Area 51 universe is aiming for a political-flavoured twist to its alien-based plotline. A 'blacksite' is somewhere the military operates while denying the place actually exists, and also often refers to secret CIA prisons operating outside the law, used to interrogate suspected terrorists.
All this points towards classic B-movie themes like invasions, cover-ups and, of course, lots and lots of grotesque alien invaders. This time around you'll be fighting The Reborn, towering creatures that are the result of flawed human/alien experiments. Take a look at the screen below for a teasing glimpse of these gangly nasties.
With Area 51 destroyed, Blacksite takes place above ground in normal towns and cities surrounding the disaster zone left by the previous game. This mix of wild, unreal beings stalking you through dusty, small town Nevada only heightens the game's world-gone-weird atmosphere. And, while you soak up the mood, your squad of brainbox team-mates can watch your back.
Midway has gone all out in the pursuit of AI reliability. Squad mates have their own personalities, which should enhance your attachment to the poor lads, and convincing voice-work gives you a window into their morale - when things are good they'll be deadly effective but if the situation gets really sticky your buddies will lose combat effectiveness and accuracy.

A brand new Ghostbusters videogame appears to have been revealed in a series of movies, and include a CGI Peter Venkman uttering the immortal words "Who you gonna call?" The movies, which have been uploaded to video community site YouTube over the weekend, are attributed to a developer called Zootfly, who works primarily on Xbox 360 and PC games.
The clips include footage of Ecto 2, a sportier take on the wailing Ghostbusters car, hurtling down a city street; some proton gun, phantom blasting action; a closer peek at Ecto 2 in several colours; and the Peter Venkman news footage, crediting the Ghostbusters with saving the world for a third time.
Billed as "a Ghostbusters game prototype," it's obviously in the very early stages of development - Venkman looks super-rubbery, while the environments are a bit cardboard-looking. The action sequence, though, shows some exciting potential, reminding us of the relentless foot-pounding shootery in Gears of War. Cruel hoax or fan-pleasing reality? We'll find out soon.

XBList is a Windows program written in C# that can display your Xbox Live Friends List in a buddy-list format. It is designed to be simple and unobtrusive. It also has some integration with Xbox.com to display Gamer Tiles and Gamer Cards, and Bungie.net to display Halo 2 information and player emblems.
Well, I've finally gotten around to releasing a version of XBList that's good enough to call 3.0. Last year I posted a look at what I thought should be in the next XBList. The most major has been the transition to .NET 2.0. Besides the increased stability and power of the new framework and doing things "the 2.0 way", I ended up rewriting most of XBList's innards in an effort to make it more maintainable, cleaner, faster, and more stable. That's all in there, even though you don't see it. Emblem loading, in particular, is much more robust. I also went out of my way to simplify the app and put in those little features that had been bugging me forever. For example, XBList now remembers if you've collapsed a category (like "Offline") instead of expanding it each time. And a list refresh won't always scroll to the top like it used to.
However, there are a couple of very visible changes. First, you'll now get a little tray icon and message bubble whenever there are new messages waiting for you at Xbox.com. This is really exciting for me, since it means that friends can invite you to a game and you'll know about it right there on your desktop. It's a new feature, and I'll be working on it more, but I hope everybody likes it. The other thing is that XBList has a new icon and a new set of graphics. There's an animated sign-in screen, a chilling error screen, and better indicators in the system tray. I never liked the old XBList icon (which was just the old Xbox logo, cut out), and this one feels much more professional, as well as having its own identity, which isn't to say that it doesn't owe a lot to the Xbox 360 UI team.
One last thing: I never got a chance to try it, but people complained that XBList 2.2 didn't work on Vista. I think XBList 3.0 might (and I created a spiffy Vista icon for it) so please give it a shot and let me know if it works!

As with some other recent reports concerning the trio of new consoles, we're not asserting that this decibel test is entirely accurate, as the methodology was far from scientific, but the results were interesting -- and a bit unexpected -- to say the least. While users have long since complained that the Xbox 360 kicked out an unusual amount of fan noise courtesy of the overheating problems it's been plagued with, one lucky owner of all three consoles found that Microsoft's unit actually wasn't the biggest racket-maker in the bunch, all things considered. By utilizing a standard handheld decibel meter, he measured the ambient sound output of the Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360 just after start-up, playing games sans an optical disc, and during disc playback to judge which console is noisiest overall. While results were noticeably mixed, it was concluded that the Xbox 360, on average, was actually the quietest of the bunch, and while the PS3 remained fairly calm initially, an extended period of play threw its fans (and consequently, the noise factor) into overdrive. Interestingly, Nintendo's Wii kept nearly silent during bootup, but after playing a few rounds of Wii Sports, it actually became the loudest of the three, clocking in at 70dB, or nearly 8dB higher than the nearest competitor. Granted, most folks won't notice the background whir when the 5.1s are thumpin' and folks are getting rowdy on the last lap of Excite Truck, but c'mon, this is the stuff we geeks are made to scrutinize, so be sure and hit the read link to make of it all what you will.

Xboxic reports that an unnamed developer, speaking to 1UP, has revealed details about a Crysis game headed to Xbox 360. Allegedly, the console version will not be a direct port of the PC title that's currently in development. Like Far Cry before it, Crysis will be stripped down for its console debut.
The Xbox 360 version will supposedly incorporate similar story elements to its PC brethren, but will feature different gameplay aspects (physics, environments, etc.) that better utilize 360's DirectX 9 technology (the PC version is being built using DirectX 10). Expect full details if and when Crytek finally (and officially) announces this much-anticipated console installment of its high-profile franchise.

According to a pre-CES briefing that Windows expert Paul Thurrott received from his Microsoft pals, the big M will be coming out with a new version of the Xbox 360 (Zephyer?) at the end of 2007, which will feature a larger HDD and some new hardware to enable that IPTV functionality Robbie Bach was talking about during the Microsoft CES keynote. It also stands to reason that such a Xbox 360 might be sporting a fancy new HDMI port and perhaps run just a wee bit cooler -- meaning HDCP and less fan noise, natural fits for home theater use. It still seems a bit unreasonable for Microsoft, which has been bragging about its 10 million strong installed base, to leave those early adopters out in the cold, but if that's the way it goes down we can't say we won't welcome the excuse to ditch the fan and disc drive hullabaloo of our current gen box.

A tip like "omg its true. mys videl was really workin on teh zune linux." doesn't really inspire confidence -- in the story, or in the future of mankind -- but if this YouTube video is to be believed, it seems as if some foolio named "MysVidel," who can't even manage to get a camera to focus properly, has hacked up his Zune to run Linux. It could very well just be a video playing back on the Zune, meant to fool the casual viewer, but the button presses are well enough timed that we're willing to give this one a fair shake. Don't let us down, MysVidel. As for tipster -- our hope in you is lost already. Like always, check the video after the break.

Via Xbox Scene
Robinsod over at the XBH forums probably found a way to boot his Xbox360 with the original 1888 kernel ('BK' kernel). The onboard flash of the Xbox360 contains the full original kernel (v2.0.1888.0, which is the first public kernel release) and patches (this is what MS adds when they release new kernel updates) to update the kernel to the latest build (currently at v2.0.4552.0). Apparently the systems scans for version numbers in the headers of kernel patches and then selects what to load, by deleting (null) the (non-encrypted) headers (esp. version numbers) of the patches Robinsod probably managed to get his Xbox360 to boot the original 1888 kernel (v2.0.1888.0).
While the Xbox360 software (system>console settings>system info) reports being in 1888 kernel it has yet to be tested if it really is booting only the 1888 kernel without patches (looking at the dashboard features is no option ... the dashboard and kernel are not the same, the dashboard stays as it is).
I have now successfully mounted my HYNIX flash in a socket and developed code to read, erase and reflash areas of that flash. I have also been sniffing the flash bus during the 360's power on sequence.
I believe my 360 was last updated from the NFS:Carbon game disk. The Kernel and Dash versions are reported as:
D 2.0.2868.0, K 2.0.2868.0, BK 2.0.1888.0
The read sequence I observed agrees broadly with that posted on free60 and when "condensed" it looks like this:
Power On:
Reads 0x000000 - 0x0001FF
Reads 0x008000 - 0x00E1FF ---"CB"
Reads 0x000000 - 0x0001FF
Reads 0x001000 - 0x003FFF
Reads 0x00C000 - 0x00C1FF
Reads 0x00E000 - 0x0699FF
Reads 0x06C000 - 0x06C1FF ---"CF"
Reads 0x07C000 - 0x07C1FF ---"CF" As per free60.org upto here
Reads 0x06C000 - 0x07BFF0 ---"CF" My log differs from free60.org from here
Notice how the 360 reads the first 0x200 bytes of the blocks marked "CF" and then selects one to read completely. This suggests that the 360 is reading the version numbers of kernel patches and selecting the most recent. In this case the patch at 0x06C000 is read.
To test the theory I erased:
1) 16KB block of Flash at 0x06C000, result:
D 2.0.2858.0, K 2.0.2858.0, BK 2.0.1888.0
2) 16KB block of Flash at 0x06C000 and 0x07C000, result:
K 2.0.1888.0
3) Inserted the NFS:C disk and reapplied the 2.0.2868.0 update, result:
D 2.0.2868.0, K 2.0.2868.0, BK 2.0.1888.0
So now I need to find a suitable test software to verify that the console really is downgraded to 2.0.1888.0. The kiosk disk perhaps.. .
Interesting reply from TheSpecialist:
I'd like to toss in my theory about the 'patches'. There are 2 questions here:
1. Why does MS upgrade via 'patches' and not just by sending the whole files and
2. Why don't they just patch the files in flash, but instead, keep the original files + patches in flash?
There are various good answers to question one, but I think the best answer is that it has to do with the limited space. Now, it is very easy to roll back the kernel: they always keep the original file, so they can hold various kernel versions in the Flash, because the patches are relatively small. If they wouldn't use patches, but complete files, then they wouldn't probably have space enough for 2 kernels !
About the answer to question 2 I am pretty sure: they simply can NOT patch the exe files themselves on the flash ! Because doing so, would break the signature, so they would need to resign the files and MS is not going to send us the private key to do so Besides, another reason would be that rolling back would be more difficult.
So, to conclude, the filesystem always contains the V1.0 version of the files (well: 2.0.1888.0 November 22, 2005 Original shipped version), plus the patches. The 360 scans for the latest patch, loads both the original exe and the latest patch, checks BOTH files for their signature (at least, that is what i EXPECT) and then creates the new, 'patched' exe in its memory.
Note that right now, booting up with the 1888 kernel doesn't bring any real advantages (except maybe booting the kiosk disc from recordable media), but it might come in handy later.

Forum posters at Eurogamer unearthed a job posting seeking a C++ programmer for the development of Go for Xbox Live Arcade. According to Eurogamer, the job posting stated that, "this role will involve writing a Xbox 360 title for Xbox Live Arcade. The game will be an adaptation of the classic board game Go, and will support a 3D view and networked Xbox Live play."
The job posting looks to be missing from the page, so we're going to have to take Eurogamer's word that it once existed. Because of that, and since the project may never come to fruition, we're going to treat this as a rumor until we hear something through some more official channels. That said, we're extremely amused by the thought of Xbox Live younguns trash-talking their way through this traditional Chinese board game.
Microsoft had a Go variant, Reversi, packaged with Windows XP, but it does not seem to be included with Windows Vista.

A prankster Neo Gaffer, RanoL, put up a prank press release on the Neo Gaf forums announcing that Konami was forming a new internal division, titled “Kojima X Productions”, that was going to be working on a “Triology” of Metal Gear titles for the Xbox 360. Most everyone laughed it off but IGN didn’t seem to notice. They actually posted a story about this “new division” and MGS Xbox 360 titles, as evidenced by the above picture. After they noticed their mistake, they quickly took it down but left that page up. You can visit it yourself here. Kind of like that one time I posted that Motorstorm may be coming to the Xbox…ooops! But I’m a blogger, I can f-ck up like that. Isn’t IGN supposed to be a credible news source?

Details of Halo 3's Mongoose ATV have emerged on the Bungie website.
It bills the two-person vehicle as an ultra-light, all-terrain vehicle, both fast and vulnerable; ideal for quickly securing an important location or for attempting a wild snatch-and-grab operation for the enemy's flag.
However, the 'Goose won't be for everybody. While it would be a rookie error to overlook the versatility of the machine, its virtually non-existent armour and demanding handling make it a challenge to utilise effectively - as remarks on the site point out.
"Speed is the only protection this vehicle provides; it is unarmored, noisy, and prone to roll over. It demands a level of skill from its operator that is impossible to expect from the rank and file during combat conditions. Those not qualified as expert need not apply."
Examples of strategies when racing around multiplayer maps Valhalla and High Ground are offered further down the page. Elsewhere on the site you can catch up with how the game's designers and community team faired against each other in recent head-to-head battles.
Open beta-testing for Halo 3 multiplayer begins in the spring. Those of you in the US have already been offered various ways to take part, whilst us Europeans will have to wait for details on our participation (unless we all want to buy Crackdown, that is).

Epic Games' flagship 360 shooter Gears of War has sold over three million copies worldwide in just ten weeks, putting it well on course to smash the sales figure set by legendary Xbox shooter Halo, which has sold five million copies since its release in 2001.
The news of Gears' latest milestone comes from Microsoft's own Larry Hryb, who reveals that the Epic shooter has helped the Xbox 360 muscle 51% market share in the United States for December 2006, and expand the population of Xbox Live users to over five million, with a collosal three billion game hours logged to date.
Of course, it's not the first trumping Gears of War has given the Bungie shooter franchise in the last 12 months. The 360 opus has already overtaken the mighty Halo 2 as the most popular game on Xbox Live.
It's a remarkable achievement for a debut franchise and sales are showing no sign of slowing - but Gears still has a way to go before it's crowned as the best selling Xbox game of all time. For that, it would have to beat the record set by the second Halo game, which has thus far managed to flog over eight million copies worldwide.
Will it beat Halo 2's record? We'll keep you up to speed as it races up the sales ladder.
