The downloadable version of Konami's Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is going to break Xbox Live Arcade rules, by exceeding Microsoft's previously strict 50MB size limit.
In an interview with Gamespot, Xbox Live Arcade group manager Greg Canessa said that if a game exceeds 50Mb in size it's for a "very specific reason" that ensures that the gameplay experience is the best it can be.
"Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is one of the most popular games of all time, and you can [bet] that you'll see similar high-quality games come to Xbox Live Arcade in the future," said Canessa.
Seeing as Symphony of the Night was originally a PlayStation game - and not a 20-year-old arcade title like many other Arcade entries - it's perhaps not too surprising that Castlevania won't be zipping down our broadband pipes as fast as other titles.
As for details on port itself, it's sporting enhanced graphics and sound, widescreen support, achievements, leaderboards and all the other fancy Xbox Live goodies you'd expect from Arcade titles.

Microsoft’s European Xbox VP Chris Lewis has told MCV that the company was disappointed by Sony’s “no-show” over Christmas – because it would have been the perfect time for 360 to prove its dominance.
Speaking as part of MCV’s Christmas review, Lewis (pictured) asserted that, had PS3 been on the market, gamers would have been left in little doubt that 360 was the superior machine.
“The lowlight of our Christmas was the lack of anything from our main next-generation competition,” Lewis told MCV. “We were looking forward to some friendly rivalry and the chance to prove that games look and play better on Xbox 360 - but Sony didn't show!”
Lewis also talked up Microsoft’s relationship with UK retail and praised the performance of stores over the festive period.
“Our highlight of the season was definitely seeing and hearing the customer reaction to the great value retail offers we had in place thanks to some great teamwork with our retail and publisher partners,” he added. “Customers really loved being able to get their hands on an Xbox 360 plus games like Gears of War and Pro Evolution Soccer 6 for a great price.”
However, Lewis shied away from weighing up Microsoft’s Christmas performance on 360 with the previous year, saying that the two periods were incomparable.
“It's difficult to compare Xbox 360 in Christmas 2006 to the previous year,” he said. “This year we had plenty of stock, a fantastic portfolio of games and some great retail offers and the difference it made was significant. We're very pleased with our Christmas performance.”

Wal-Mart is under the attack again for selling a supposably normal product to a customer which turns out to be something quite unexpected. Wal-Mart just sold a new Microsoft Zune which was found with pornography before the owner got a hold of it. So now they got another case on their hands.
Marissa Gonazales bought a Xbox 360 for Christmas and when it was opened the next day her family found that it was full of dirty socks and stacks of magazines. Apparently when Marissa tried to talk to the employees at Wal-Mart they kept brushing her off by sending her to different people.
“Since Christmas day, Marissa has spent a lot of time on the phone. She says she has talked to five Wal-Mart store managers ranging from department, district and general managers. A store who Always promises low prices, has $460 of Marissa’s hard earned money and all she has in return is useless dirty socks and magazines, not the XBOX 360 she thought she purchased.”
Lesson learned here is check the ruddy box first :P

We had a chance to check out Microsoft's IPTV offering for Xbox 360, announced earlier this week during Bill Gates' CES keynote, and get answers to some of the questions that have been nagging at us since first hearing about the service. Though Microsoft hasn't announced any providers for the service yet, both AT&T and Verizon -- as well as fourteen other telcos around the world -- use Microsoft's IPTV middleware platform to provide television over fiber, so they seem like likely candidates when the service debuts holiday season '07. Of course, if you're considering the DVR functionality, the Xbox 360's anemic 20GB hard drive won't get you very far. A Microsoft rep said the file sizes are dependent not only on the resolution of the feed, but the compression used by the provider; however, one could probably assume that the Xbox Live Video Marketplace's videos would be roughly analogous in size. Regardless, we'd expect an update to the drive before IPTV launches. Because IPTV uses software, not a hardware tuner, to decode the signal, the number of streams that can be simultaneously recorded is limited solely by internet and hard drive bandwidth. In addition, IPTV is capable of offering more HD channels than other platforms, like cable or satellite. Because the service shares the same connection as your phone and internet connection, it can provide telco caller-ID and features like teleconferencing have "been discussed." Perhaps the biggest question we have is whether or not any of this functionality would (or could) be made available to gamers who don't (or can't) get IPTV service in their area. Microsoft isn't saying anything but, considering the small amount of consumers with fiber service to the home, we certainly hope so.

World War II shooter fans will be pleased by the arrival of a new Call of Duty 3 map on Xbox Live Marketplace, one of several updates planned for the title over the next few months.
Today's map is entitled 'Champs', based on the Port Royal de Champ, and not that foreign street where CVG's favourite Parisian nightclub is.
The next update - the Valor Pack with five additional multiplayer maps - is expected on Xbox Live Marketplace in the near future for 800 Microsoft Points. We'll let you know when more news on that reaches our ears.

In an interview with Gamespot, Microsoft's general manager of their game developer group, Chris Satchell, confirmed the rumors and reported leaks concerning a future update to the Xbox 360 hardware. When asked directly about the possibility of an HDMI-enabled Xbox 360 somewhere down the line, Satchell said "If you want to get great HD, I think we've got a good solution for that. In the future it's interesting to see where standards evolve to." He then follows up this statement with "At the moment, everything you might have seen is just looking at our experimentation back in Redmond, not really a product that we're thinking about announcing."
Rumors of an HDMI-enabled Xbox 360 have been kicking around ever since Microsoft introduced 1080P for the Xbox 360 via component this past September. Since then, everything from the Lost Planet "typo" to leaked shots of modified 360's have set off alarms across the internet. So while it's great to know that Microsoft is looking into every possibility, it's also hard to swallow that they won't be actively pursuing this opportunity in the marketplace .

Gone are the cries of "I wish I'd seen his face," as EA announces camera support for the 360 version of Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars.
"You can now literally see the face of your opponent while you decimate him in Xbox Live battles. Plus, for the winner, the Spotlight cam gives you an unchallenged ten seconds of fame to let your enemy know exactly how you feel about your victory."
We know how we'd celebrate: it involves a fairy-liquid bottle and three ripe bananas. What form will your victory dance take, readers?
As well as camera support, EA is offering 360 gamers exclusive multiplayer Capture the Flag and Siege modes. The gameplay and user interface are going to be built from the ground up, which we expect will be very similar to the control system in The Battle for Middle-Earth II.
The PC version of the game will launch on the 28th March, with the console release following later in the year.

The official story: Microsoft rep--"Microsoft does not comment on rumors or speculation."
What we heard: The holidays may be over, but for Xbox-360-owning casual and retro gamers, every Wednesday seems like another Christmas morning thanks to Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade Wednesdays program. Nearly every humpday sees new content go up on Xbox Live Marketplace, the most anticipated type of content being a new Xbox Live Arcade game.
To keep interest high, Microsoft usually announces what game is coming out that week on Monday or Tuesday. However, it appears that the release date of next week's game may have slipped out a bit early.
The unabashedly named Xbox360Fanboy.com picked up the blog of DaKing240, who says that Pop Cap's Heavy Weapon will be the game du jour for January 17. Heavy Weapon may already be familiar to PC users. Like several other Pop Cap Games for Xbox Live Arcade, the game has been available for download for the mouse-and-keyboard gamer for a while now.
DaKing240 claims to be well connected in the industry, and in several other posts credits sources at various developers. Unfortunately this post doesn't directly credit a source, leaving gamers to ponder its authenticity and cross-check DaKing240's credibility.
Just last week, DaKing misfired on the release date of Ms. Pac-Man, saying the game would be released on January 4. DaKing420 wasn't far off, though. Yesterday, Microsoft officially announced that the game would make its debut on Xbox Live Arcade tomorrow.
DaKing240's news sparked some sleuthing by Xbox 360 Fanboy, which claims to have confirmed the news from another source, The Xbox Domain. However, the news comes with a disclaimer--the game is merely scheduled for January 17...meaning that barring any unforeseen circumstances, it should be out that day.
Heavy Weapon was originally announced for the 360 back in early May, and was originally scheduled for release last year. Given the fact that the game is deep in development, it's a good bet that Heavy Weapon is due sometime soon, if not on January 17.
Bogus or not bogus?: Not Bogus, but nothing is official.

When Konami released Castlevania: Symphony of the Night on the PlayStation 10 years ago, it was a resurrection of sorts for the undead franchise. By incorporating gameplay elements from Nintendo's Metroid series of games, Symphony of the Night established a template for 2D Castlevania entries that has endured through multiple installments on the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS.
Now the publisher is bringing that formula back to the realm of the living (room), as Konami is showing off Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for the Xbox Live Arcade at this year's Consumer Electronics Show. As with most older games brought to Xbox Live Arcade games, Symphony of the Night won't be a mere port. Konami has said the game will feature enhanced graphics and sound, widescreen support, achievements, and leaderboards. Players will be able to choose between the original graphics or enhanced visuals that mitigate sprite pixilation when the game is played in high-definition.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is expected to release on the Xbox Live Arcade later this year.

Capcom's Mark Beaumont has said that the company will produce Dead Rising games "for years to come".
Speaking exclusively to GamesIndustry.biz, Beaumont attributed some of the game's success to punters' willingness "to take more of an experiment in what games they'll try" at the start of a hardware cycle.
Others would probably point to the 360's shortfall in first-party titles along the back straight of 2006, and the game's superb critical reception.
"Bringing out Dead Rising has allowed us to establish a new franchise that we can use for years to come," Beaumont added, which ought to give those Resident Evil slackers something to think about. Come on, what's happening with number five?

More details have emerged of Jeff Minter's XBLA game, Space Giraffe.
So far, work on the engine has finished and fundamental gameplay mechanics are in and doing what they should. The next few weeks will see levels fleshed out (over 100, apparently), the difficulty curve assessed, new enemy types added and display graphics tweaked. Minter also expects the game to begin resembling an Xbox Live Arcade title, adding high-scores and achievements to the package.
On his LiveJournal, below the picture of him hugging a sheep, Jeff is confident of the game's progress, reckoning it's fast approaching the first testing phase.
"Looking forward now over the next few weeks to actually shaping this into an actual game with a beginning, an end, lives, hi-scores, achievements and such - something I can actually ship out to guinea pigs to play and get coherent feedback about."
Space Giraffe is a psychedelic shooter which follows on from popular Atari Jaguar title Tempest 2000. It will cost you about 400 Microsoft points and is expected to launch sometime this year.

id Software's John Carmack has been speaking about the developer's brand new game in an interview conducted with Game Informer at this year's Consumer Electronics show.
We've known that id has a new project underway for some time and, while Carmack and the dev might be keeping plenty under wraps, he did reveal that the developer's brand new IP is "diverting a little bit from the standard id formula and it's not just a first-person shooter." Explaining further, he added that the gameplay "is somewhat different from anything that we've done before", which has had us scratching our heads wondering just what it is id Software is cooking up.
In the interview, he additionally spoke about the technology that's powering the secret project. He said the tech still has some roots in Doom 3 technology "but almost everything is new in there... Technically, it's build [sic] around an advancement over the MegaTexture technology from Quake Wars. Where that was applied just to the terrain, the version of the new technology applies it into everything, so we can have that level of rich detail on all the surfaces on the entire world. That's the push that we're making with graphics technology."
Carmack explained that id is trying to develop a brand new franchise with its new game, and that "Hopefully, we'll be talking about that sometime this year, and we'll be able to go ahead and come out of our own little cone of silence about it."
id's project is expected on PC and Xbox 360 and, it appears, with him saying while addressing a question on PS3 development in the interveiw that "I do intend to do a simultaneous release on it", Sony's new console too.

Microsoft game developer group boss Chris Satchell has addressed recent rumours of revised HDMI-enabled Xbox 360 hardware, saying that the remixed console is simply an "experimentation".
Photographs of the new hardware appeared on the internet at the end of last week, showing an additional HDMI port on the rear of the console - there was also talk of a 120GB HDD being on the cards.
"At the moment, everything you might have seen is just looking at our experimentation back in Redmond, not really a product that we're thinking about announcing," Satchell told Gamespot.
But while the new hardware might be off the cards, Satchell didn't rule out the possibility of a bumped-up hard disk, saying "if we see an increase in pressure that's something that will be interesting to look at, but there isn't any announcement today about any new configuration that may or may not be happening."
Which might be useful when the recently announced Xbox 360 IPTV service arrives, which Satchell says he hopes to integrate via a dashboard update, rather than a disc install. "Obviously our preference normally is to do everything online because that's where people are at," he said.
Microsoft plans to launch the Xbox 360 IPTV - which, in a nutshell, allows you to stream TV through your 360 (the cost of which Microsoft is apparently leaving up to its partners) - "by holiday 2007".

We wanted to give a head's up that the multi-player leaderboards, and player's bankroll data will be refreshed tomorrow (Wednesday the 10th) in order to level the competitive playing field. Single player leaderboards, and bankroll data will not be affected.
We had an issue where some players had their multi-player data reset while others did not, this fix addresses that issue.

Microsoft's Peter Moore, chief Xbox-exec and avid bicep tattooer, confirmed a plan to add video games to the Zune (Xune?) at CES yesterday. This would bring the Zune up to speed with the iPod's ability to offer games, albeit several months late. Moore said the Zune's large screen would provide a better platform for handheld gaming, gushing, "I love the interface, I love the screen." We know you do, Peter. We know you do. While this isn't quite what we were thinking when pondering a Microsoft-branded handheld gaming system, everyone's gotta start somewhere (we're looking at you, Zune). Of course, Peter Moore -- perhaps prematurely -- told BusinessWeek last year, "It can't just be our version of the iPod ... in addition to playing music and videos, a Microsoft device would include games." And now it will ... err, rather, it will in about eighteen months.
