Xbox is in the news this week, again linked to tragedy. During the opening hearing for Tyrone Spellman's murder trial we were reminded how Spellman beat his 17-month-old daughter Alayiah to death after she allegedly knocked his Xbox off of the shelf while he was playing Ghost Recon. "I thought it was broken. I popped her in the face," Spellman told police.
Alayiah's death is one of several child slayings, at the hands of parents, recently profiled by the Philadelphia Inquirer in an effort to expose the Department of Human Services' failings. DHS workers had visited Alayiah's home twice during the month before she was murdered.

4 CommentsIn an interview published on CVG today GRAW 2 content producer Olivier Dauba discussed 360 competitor Gears of War, saying it's "it's an absolutely awesome ten minutes," but "if you play 20 minutes it doesn't bring anything new."
"We try to go beyond that and making something that lasts for quite a few hours," Dauba continues. "It's a different game maybe but in my opinion we're aiming for something deeper and wider with a bigger scope." "We're designing our game as a more long-term experience."
The GRAW 2 producer continues saying that he thinks Gears is a very good game, but "the core gameplay is very simple" adding, "you take cover, you aim and basically that's it. Ghost Recon in my opinion has a much deeper layer of tactical choices and the environments are actually different as well; Gears of War looks more or less the same to me - this type of destroyed city and destroyed environment."

Former Bungie team lead Max Hoberman has told that his new studio, Certain Affinity, won't necessarily develop games exclusively for Xbox and Xbox 360 - despite a close relationship with Microsoft.
Certain Affinity officially opened its doors earlier this week, announcing that its first project would be to develop multiplayer maps for Halo 2 in partnership with Bungie Studios and Microsoft Game Studios.
It's also planning to produce a title for Xbox 360, details of which have yet to be announced.

During a back stage interview at Spike TV 2006 Video Game Awards show, the host asked the Epic guys about downloadable content. Epic Games President, Doctor Mike Capps, said:
"We started long before the game ever came out; we started on the next stuff. We always take care of our customers, we always give them stuff for free and we're going to keep doing that forever."
So will we be getting free content? Well everything has to go thought MS first as they are the publisher... we will have to wait and see.

XNA Game Studio Express is Microsoft’s game developer kit for homebrew and hobbyist developers and is available as a free download. (Learn more about XNA Game Studio.) Express includes a basic "starter kit" for rapid development of specific genres of games. It was released with a space shooter. In the future there will be kits for platform, real-time strategy, and first-person shooters.
Developers can create Windows games for free with the XNA Framework--a separate download. To run games on the Xbox 360 you will have to pay an annual fee of $99 for admission to the XNA "Creators Club". There is also a 4-month $49 subscription as well.
1. GET C# Express!
You need the C# developer kit environment to start using the XNA Game Studio. Download and install this first if you don’t already have it.
2. GET XNA Game Studio Express!
Next download and install XNA. This will add new features to your C# environment.
3. Download the XNA Framework
Get this to test and run games on your windows computer.
4. Learn C#!
C# is an object-oriented programming language developed by Microsoft as part of their .NET initiative. C# has a procedural, object-oriented syntax based on C++ that includes aspects of several other programming languages including Delphi, Visual Basic, and Java. XNA works with the C# programming language. If you don’t know it, it’s time to start learning.
- Online videos are so hot right now! Why not use them to learn C#? MSDN has a whole video series to get you up and running on C#. It’s over 10 hours of training! Click here to check it out.
- If you are more traditional, it’s time to crack some books. Check out this FREE eBook from Programmer’s Heaven. It will give you the basics on C# programming like classes and objects, arrays, strings, windows applications and file systems.
5. Check out the sample programs!
After you have some basics under your belt, you might as well crack open the XNA and see what it’s capable of doing. That’s why MS has provided us with Space War. That’s also why XNASpot has provided us with a tutorial on messing around with the code to give us an intro on working on games in XNA.
6. Learn XNA!
Alright, we’ve seen what it can do, but all we can do is adjust the speed of missles in a prefab game. In order to launch that MMORPG idea that we’ve got, we’d better learn how to use this thing. Onward to…more video tutorials! At XNATutorials, they’ve got a number of—and growing—tutorials to get you started programming in the XNA environment.
7. Learn more XNA!
Tutorials are starting to pop up everywhere, but not all of them are very complete. Reimer’s website has a pretty good tutorial that will launch you right into XNA and a graphical game. By page 3 you will already be drawing stuff to the screen. Continue on to the second tutorial for some even more advanced stuff! (The nav bar is on the right hand menu if you get confused about continuing the tutorial.)
Another great place to start is at More Than I Can Chew; they too have a bunch of game based tutorials via podcasts and screen casts to check out. You learn sprites, gravity, boundaries and such. Look for Episode 1.
8. Make Pong!
After having you mess with Space War, XNASpot also has a great tutorial on building Pong from the ground up.
9. Look at sample code!
There are plenty of sites with sample code out there. Look them over and see how people are implementing their games. The only way to answer “Gee, how’d they do that?” is to dig through their code. Find samples at xnaspot.com, xbox360homebrew.com and xnaresources.com.
10. Join the Creator Club to get your game onto the xBOX!

Ladies and gentlemen, you might want to sit down; flagship Xbox 360 RPG Blue Dragon has outsold the recently released Zelda: Twilight Princess - and all other Wii software - in Japan.
The latest Media Create Japanese chart puts the Mistwalker RPG at number four in the top selling titles in Japan for December 4 through 10, which has managed to shift a respectable 80,000 copies in the country giving it the number two all-time 360 sales record behind Dead or Alive 4.
Blue Dragon has received a considerable level of hype in Japan, largely thanks to the fanbase surrounding Dragon Ball Z artist Akira Toriyama who designed the characters in the game, and a special edition Japanese Blue Dragon 360 bundle which some Japanese retailers reported to have sold out of within minutes of opening pre-orders.
Meanwhile Nintendo's latest Zelda has shockingly dwindled all the way to number 17 in Japan, only a week after it was bested by mini-game titles Wii Sports and Wii Play during the Far Eastern console launch. You could speculate that perhaps quantaties of the game - and especially the Wii hardware - have become near-impossible to secure in Japan, but we'll have to wait and see how the numbers perk up in the following weeks.
So could this be a turning point for Microsoft's console in the Far East? We'll let you know how far it is up the top ten next week.

YLA G, creator of the Google application, GooMGC, has posted on his blog:
On December 20 a new Halo 3 video will be available on marketplace. It’s a 7 minute video that will be released next week. It highlights the emergence of the Brutes as playable characters in the game. It touches on their skills, origins, and how they are being created. It has about 2 ½ minutes of gameplay footage.
At this stage this is the only source for this news, and I can't help smell a little BS. The game is not coming out for another 11 months and they have already did to promotional stuff for halo 3 this month.
Only 6 days till we find out I guess...

Lost planet is not even out yet, but based on feedback from the multiplayer demo, a patch will be avadiable the day it comes out in the US and Europe:
Since the release of the Lost Planet multiplayer demo on Xbox Live marketplace over the Thanksgiving weekend, Capcom has received an amazing amount of feedback and suggestions for the online portion of the game. Our development team has been listening and has not only already made several key changes, but will also be working on a patch that will be available when the game launches in North America and Europe on Jan. 12. The fixes will mostly address Lobby and Matchmaking functionality of the game, adding some elements not included in the demo (as always, demos are a work in progress) and slightly revising others.
Some of these changes had already been anticipated by the team and were included in the final gold master of the game. Others have come straight from the hundreds of thousands of people playing the multiplayer demo. Capcom has been reading boards, emails and blogs, collecting thoughts and ideas directly from our growing community. Capcom would like to thank all of those people who have taken the time to share their thoughts on Lost Planet; the game is now that much stronger for it.
We recently let people know that the team had fixed text display for players with standard definition TVs. The Lobby and Matchmaking system will undergo some major updates to the systems seen in the Multiplayer Demo, based on user feedback. Changes include:
• Private slots can be set by host!
• Invite friends to a match
• Number of players in a room will be displayed next to name of the room
• Players will not be kicked all the way out to the main menu if they try to join a full game
• New button allows players to refresh the match list without going out to the main menu and selecting Quick Match again
• Players will now go to a post-game lobby at the end of a match, not kicked back to the main menu
• The ability to replay a match with the same group without leaving the post-game lobby
• Cycling maps on replayed matches when map selection is set to Random
• Text size on the team selection screen will be greatly increased when using non-HD resolutions.
• When manual team selection is set to ON, players will have 20 seconds to form teams.
• The time limit on each match will be maxed out at 60 minutes, instead of the current unlimited time.
• A player’s custom match criteria will now be saved.

Microsoft took another step towards high-tech when it released the Xbox 360 Wireless Headset in early November. The new headset not only eliminated wires, it also promised improved sound quality and less latency over the wired headset.
Unfortunately, the wireless headset has also had its fair share of problems, including cutting out during fragfests and issues with interference. Microsoft is aware of these problems, and is currently looking towards a solution.
On Gamerscore Blog, the Web site run by the Microsoft Games Global Marketing Team, one member posted the following alert from the Xbox Accessories team:
"We have received feedback from some customers that they have experienced issues while using the Xbox 360 Wireless Headset, including difficulty syncing the headset to the controller, reception interference and audio sensitivity when playing action-packed games like Gears of War. We are committed to providing the highest quality accessories for Xbox 360 and would like to assist in troubleshooting and resolving those issues, whether by replacing or repairing the units under warranty."
Microsoft recommends that any gamers having issues with the wireless headset call the Xbox technical support hotline at 1-800-4-MY-XBOX.
The Xbox 360 Wireless Headset retails for $59.99.

Chris Satchell, general manager of Microsoft's game developer group, has revealed the company's ambitions to found a YouTube-style content-sharing community for videogames.
Speaking this morning at a launch event for the XNA Game Studio Express development platform, Satchell said, "Where our vision's really heading is taking that YouTube concept and bringing it into games. Think about a Community Arcade, being able to share your own games with the whole community on Xbox Live."

Popular physics and animation engine Havok is to be used in the massive RPG sequel Fable 2, Microsoft and Lionhead have revealed this morning.
Apparently, Lionhead's attraction to Havok was so that it could avoid the worry of finding an efficient way to pull off all the complex physics calculations themselves, that are apparently required to create "a huge, vibrant, real time and persistent virtual world such as the one we're creating for Fable 2", says Lionhead boss Peter Molyneux.
"By using Havok, we bypass a lot of the heavy physics maths and concentrate our teams more on the creative and innovative elements of the game", Molyneux adds.

Microsoft has announced that last week was a record breaker for Xbox 360 sales in Australia - despite the fact that the Nintendo Wii launched there on Thursday.
In the week ending December 10, AU$ 5.8 million (3.4 million Euro) worth of Xbox products were sold, according to GfK data. That figure includes consoles to the value of AU$ 2.6 million (1.5 million Euro) along with games and accessories.
The Wii launched on December 7 but according to David McLean, regional director for Xbox Australia and New Zealand, the arrival of Nintendo's new console had little impact on 360 sales.
"In terms of retail revenue, Xbox 360 has generated around AU $145 million [86 million Euro] in ANZ this year. Were pleased to report that despite new competition in the market, sales are showing no signs of slowing down," he commented.
"I put this down to a combination of three things - demonstrable value for money backed by powerful hardware, plus a huge range of next-generation games and accessories."
McLean went on to observe that Xbox 360 is the fastest-selling home console in Australia, with more than 100,000 units and 400,000 games sold since its March launch.
"The attach rate on Xbox 360 has reached a staggering 4.8 - around twice the attach rate of any console in history at this stage of the life cycle," McLean added.
Nintendo has yet to announce figures for Wii sales in Australia.
