An anonymous reader sent a link suggesting we might enjoy High Def Digest's next-gen console media comparison. They take a look at the PlayStation 3's Blu-ray playback capabilities, and compare it to the performance of the Xbox 360's HD DVD add-on. The article offers a number of technical details for the movie, audio, and gaming buff. As you might expect, given the companies involved, both products basically perform their functions very well. From the article: "That doesn't mean both aren't without their drawbacks. The Xbox 360 add-on suffers from a lack of HDMI and analog outputs, though it still delivers excellent results despite those limitations. The PS3, meanwhile, also lacks analog outs, but it does have HDMI 1.3 support and can decode Dolby TrueHD. The lack of 1080 upconversion of 720p sources on the PS3 is a huge issue, though, so unless you have a 1080p-capable HDTV, you may suffer buyer's remorse."

Analyst Colin Sebastian from Lazard Capital Markets has sent out details of an 'upbeat' analyst meeting with Microsoft's Xbox executive team, during which he notes that the Xbox 360 is benefiting from PS3 and Wii shortages this holiday season.
Sebastian particularly commented: "Management appeared to be upbeat regarding the current state of the business, particularly with progress made in establishing the Xbox 360 as the early leader among next generation consoles, and also with penetration and usage of Xbox Live services."
The analyst continues: "We also believe the Xbox 360 may be benefiting at retail this holiday from short supplies of PS3 and Wii consoles. Recently, Microsoft executives reaffirmed the company's goal of reaching 10 million Xbox 360 units installed worldwide by the end 2006."
He also notes that the company may be making better in-roads in Europe, after only a moderate start, though the Japanese problem still remains: "North America remains the strongest Xbox 360 market, however Microsoft appears to be making some strides in other geographies, most notably in the U.K. and northern Europe, while we believe sales are still weaker in Japan."

Now, some psychoanalysis on Microsoft executives would be quite entertaining ("Tell me about these lucid dreams, Peter."), especially when compared to the recent observations made by Colin Sebastian of Lazard Capital Markets. In his earth-shattering report, Mr. Sebastian describes the folks behind the Xbox brand as "upbeat" given the commercial success of Gears of War, the company's considerable launch lead against competitors and consistent growth in Europe. Japan, not so much.
The Xbox 360's 2007 lineup (featuring Space Ring 3) and catalogue of HD shows and movies are also expected to have a positive effect on this year's holiday sales. Sebastian believes that fleeting Wii and PS3 stock will prove to be Microsoft's greatest advantage, with desperate parents picking up a 360 and convincing their rotten brats that it was the only console they could find. It's a likely scenario, but if recent sales in Japan have proven anything, it's that the PS2 and DS Lite are far more likely (and cheaper) replacements -- if indeed a replacement is sought at all. How about a nice fruitcake instead?

Capcom's promotional efforts for its frigid Xbox 360 sci-fi shooter Lost Planet are heating up. The company has already announced one preorder incentive program and released two demos of the game over the Xbox Live Marketplace, but now it is introducing a second promotion to drive preorders and a deal that will put its commercial in front of millions of people.
Lost Planet preorder bonus.Specialty retailer GameStop is currently offering an exclusive bonus for those who preorder Lost Planet in the form of a figure of one of the game's Vital Suits. Customers can get the figure by preordering either the regular or collector's edition versions of the game, and while supplies last they will also receive a scratch-off card with a code for a version of the game's multiplayer demo that comes with an extra map.
In addition, Capcom has landed some prime ad space for the game. From December 4 through December 31, a 60-second trailer for Lost Planet will be broadcast on NBC's giant-screen TV in Times Square. Capcom expects the trailer to be seen more than 40 million times in that span, which includes Times Square's annual New Year's Eve celebration.
Lost Planet is rated T for Teen. It will be available at North American retailers beginning January 12, with a regular edition selling for $59.99, and the collector's edition going for $69.99.

Gaming Nexus has up an article marking (kinda) the one-year anniversary of the 360's launch. Author Charles Husemann touches on the important moments in the console's first year on the market, discusses what Microsoft has done right, and talks about where the console is probably going in the future. From the article: "Obviously digital content such as TV and movies are going to be a big deal (assuming Microsoft can get those servers running smoothly and release bigger hard drives). I know I can stream it from my PC but I'd love to have Major Nelsons' podcast automatically downloaded to my 360 every week. I'd also like to see Microsoft resist the temptation to cram a browser into the system as I know they are going to get pressure to do so with the Wii and the PS3 having that built in. Instead I'd love to have a simple, easy to use RSS reader that can stream headlines along the bottom of the screen when I'm in the dashboard. "

As if breaking into a home, jacking a mysterious PlayStation console, only to return for the power cord used to hold victims captive with wasn't zany enough, now we've got a Big Ten all-star (and his twin brother) reportedly swiping an Xbox. While nothing's been "confirmed," Wisconsin cornerback Jack Ikegwuonu and Northern Illinois safety William Ikegwuonu have been accused of "breaking into an off-campus apartment and trying to steal an Xbox console." Both players now face burglary and criminal trespassing charges, and if convicted, will probably not face the maximum "four years in prison" penalty. Interestingly, Wisconsin is refusing to suspend their guy until "all the facts are gathered," presumably hoping to squeak him in the lineup for the team's January bowl, while NIU has already dropped the axe on ole William, who didn't start a single game all season. But hey, at least he can simulate the team's Poinsettia Bowl matchup on a (rightfully purchased) Xbox, right?

In November, Bungie Studios and Microsoft announced that they had a huge announcement regarding Halo 3. Most hardcore fans were letdown when the news was merely the announcement of a beta program...that wouldn't even start until spring 2007.
Today, Microsoft gave some more details on the entry process for the beta, along with some information on the 60-second ad that will air in early December.
Registration for the beta program will begin on December 4 at the Halo 3 Web site (currently the site redirects visitors to Bungie's Web site). The beta will initially be open to North American gamers, and not everyone who applies is guaranteed a spot. Europe will run a beta program for the game separately. Bungie has not yet revealed the requirements to enter the beta.
Also on December 4, a 60-second ad for the game will air sometime between 5:50 p.m. and 6:20 p.m. PST during the Monday Night Football matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and Carolina Panthers. The ad will be a mix of computer graphics and live-action, and will only air on television once. After its TV broadcast, the ad will be made available on Xbox Live Marketplace and Xbox.com.
Halo 3 is due out in 2007 exclusively for the Xbox 360.

You may have heard a rumor floating about the internet that the Zune would adopt an incentive-based distribution system. The idea, supposedly, is that each song sent to your Zune-toting buddy that he/she decided to buy at your recommendation would earn you a small reward (think Zune Marketplace Points) for promoting and sharing legal digital music. Good Morning Silicon Valley revived the discussion on Wednesday, and points out that J Allard recently discussed the system at the Music Tech Summit in Seattle, but Microsoft has made no official remarks on the topic. Well we went digging through the US Patent and Trade Office site and came across a 2003 filing from Redmond that describes a very similar system that says "The first license also specifies the conditions upon which the content may be redistributed and licensed for use on a second device" and that "these conditions may specify a price for the second license, and/or a requirement that a portion of the purchase price be paid back to the owner of the first license, and/or a requirement that the first license be revoked upon creation of the second license." GMSV also says that there seems to be some confusion about the role of Shared Media Licensing, the parent company of Weedshare.com, which apparently has a very similar patent. Still, the question remains, if this really exists, when's Redmond going to let it see the light of day?

With PS3 just around the corner sporting its fancy Blu-ray movie functions, Microsoft has stepped up with the release of the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player - a diddy little add-on which sits discretely alongside Microsoft's daddy console offering full play back of the new high-definition movie format.
Upon emptying the box we had no trouble setting up our unit. After pushing aside PSW's gargantuan PlayStation 3 and hogging their fancy new telly, it was simply a job of hooking up Microsoft's console as normal, rigging the HD-DVD player with the included USB cable, and then plugging it in to the wall.
The player itself comes with a generous assortment of accessories for its attractive £129.99 price point, including all the plugs and leads you need to hook it up, an update disk to ready your dashboard for the oncoming new-media assault, a fully-sized universal media remote and a HD-DVD copy of Peter Jackson's King Kong - throw in a six-pack of Stella and this the hardware bargain of the year.
Updating your dashboard with HD-DVD support requires hooking up the drive, inserting the disc into your console and then an insanely quick install time of less than 5 seconds marks completition.
With installation behind you the disc tray menu item at the bottom of the dashboard is then split in half; the top section for standard Xbox 360 games and the bottom for HD-DVD movies.
At first we put the HD movie in the 360 and nothing happened. Then we put the disc into the HD-DVD and everything booted up as expected, looking gorgeous.
The quality of the picture is instantly visible; the HD-DVD format provides a significantly sharper, crisper display - so unsurprisingly we're really looking forward to HD-DVD porn.
Accidental Japanese language switching behind us, we skipped through the 400-odd scenes required to get the King Kong's action sequences and were again impressed by the quality visual display.
The ultra-high-res nature of the format naturally exposes King Kong's - at times - rather rubbish CGI, but above all we're convinced that this is an attractive purchase for owners of both an Xbox 360 and a HD TV (and what's the point of one without the other?)
The Xbox 360 HD-DVD player is in shops from tomorrow. Go on - even the disc tray sounds all high-definition. And you can pretend to your mates you've got a slim-lime 360.

The Xbox 360 HD-DVD add-on officially lands in stores tomorrow, but we've managed to nab an early unit from Microsoft.
Making full use of our fancy new photo studio we naturally decided to get a photo of the HD-DVD drive alongside our other pride a joy; our burning hot Nintendo Wii, which has been in constant use for about 72 hours.
If you take Wii out of its little stand, the HD-DVD is bigger than Nnitendo's console.

Flagship Xbox 360 RPG Blue Dragon has nabbed top marks in the latest issue of highly-respected Japanese mag Famitsu, receiving scores of 9, 9, 9 and 10 from is panel of reviewing editors.
This gives the RPG an impressive final score of 37/40, raising hopes for Microsoft that the Mistwalker title might just help them finally crack the Land of the Rising Sun.
Thanks to the large fanbase surrounding Dragon Ball Z artist Akira Origami - who designed the characters in the game - pre-orders for the special edition Blue Dragon 360 bundle have already been snapped up by gamers across Japan.
Could this be the turning point for Microsoft's fumble in the Far East? We'll let you know when Blue Dragon hits Japanese shops next month.

Fire up your Xbox 360 this morning and the latest dashboard update should automatically stream down your broadband pipe, fixing a number of issues including problems with the 1080p resolution through VGA.
Users previously complained of error messages when attempting to use the super super-high resolution through VGA cables, though according to Microsoft the problem has been ironed out in this latest dashboard update.
Additionally, the patch offers "improved plug and play performance for wired headsets" and some changes to the recently played games list "to improve accuracy".

Microsoft still hasn't said whether it's targeting fake Xbox Live accounts for deletion, but company blogger Major Nelson has pointed out that a recent security update aims to help prevent people like you accessing US-only Video Marketplace content.
"Although we will continue to work on providing content and rolling out the service in other markets, US Marketplace offers will be restricted to the US only," he writes. "This means that the credit card associated with your account is required to match the billing address and country your account is set up in."
"Note that we are not banning any of these Xbox Live accounts, as they can continue to use pre-paid subscription cards and Microsoft Points cards."
"We also realise that there may be a small number of international users that were impacted by this change that have a legitimate reason for why their billing location does not match their account location. We are working to deal with these exceptions on a case by case basis and are working on a solution for these consumers."
In other words, if you want to be naughty and download Video Marketplace content from outside the US, you're going to need pre-paid Microsoft-point cards. Or you could, you know, buy the DVD sets instead, since they're cheaper overall.

Sandisk, move over buddy, there's a new gun in town. According to NPD's weekly point of sale data collections (which, as we understand it, cull aggregate sales figures from all the top electronics retailers), during the Zune's launch week Microsoft captured a 9% unit share and a 13% dollar share (total cash spent) in the portable media device space. (Comparatively, Apple's iPod range snagged 63% unit share and $72.5 percent dollar share.) Now granted, this figure should be taken with a huge grain of salt. Not because of its accuracy -- since we're quite sure it's totally accurate -- but because a week spent #2 in unit share does not make a device #2 in market share, not by a long shot. Furthermore, those retail figures do not include Apple stores, where droves of customers flock to purchase their iPods, and more importantly, because that's launch week and any new device (especially one so hyped as the Zune) will almost always set its sales records during its week of launch. In other words: sorry Zune fanboys, this is going to be a war of attrition, and while launch week numbers might foretell the Zune's place in the not too distant future, they shouldn't be used as hard and fast figures for today's split up of the market.

It looks like all the complaining over the Lost Planet multiplayer demo's dingy text has paid off, as Capcom has promised the final game will automatically detect standard definition televisions and bump the text up a few font sizes.
The original complaint was over the leaderboard text in the elimination game mode, which in its current states needs several aligned magnifying glasses to read on an SD TV (hoho).
Capcom's other flagship 360 title, Dead Rising, is plagued with a similar pint-sized text problem, although Capcom has previously said it will not be able to solve the problem through a future patch or update.
In addition to the multiplayer fix, there's good news for squinty-eyed solo gamers as Capcom says the text tweak will also extend to the single-player experience, where in the final game objectives will be delivered through both text and voice.
