Puzzling details about Microsoft's partnership with UK telecom company BT Group have begun to trickle down. According to BBC, when used as a set-top box to deliver BT's television service, Xbox 360 "will not be able to receive or record live TV." Say what?
The report describes the subscription-based service (with 12-month contract) as a library of on-demand content – yeah, like this one – that includes "near-live" Premier League soccer matches. "The reason for streaming-only on the Xbox is because currently the console does not have the capability for live TV or enough hard drive [space] for practical downloading of content," a BT spokesman told BBC, seemingly hinting that a firmware update could be in the works to enable live streaming. [Update: BT's current service only offers over-the-air live broadcasts (and not via IPTV); without a tuner, Xbox 360 is not capable of receiving the company's live programming.]

Is it April already? A quick glance at our calendars confirms that it's still January, and an extended glance at 1UP's reveal of Soul Calibur IV's secret characters does nothing to evaporate the reigning feeling of utter confusion. The lineup of saucer-eyed assassins, scantily clad combatants and bizarre pain fetishists in Namco's anticipated fighter is set to be joined by the Sith's darkest lord and the Force's most diminutive master. Our little green friend can almost manage to fit in to Soul Calibur's ye olde fantasy trappings, but poor ol' Vader appears to have gotten lost and disoriented after leaping over some sharks on his space jet ski.
Even better news can be found in 1UP's suspicion that even more Star Wars characters will waltz into Calibur's cantina, possibly via downloadable content. An interesting idea, but we reckon you'd save money by simply buying a copy of Masters of Teräs Käsi off eBay.
Update: Gamespot reports that Darth Vader is reserved for the PlayStation 3, while Yoda will be included in the Xbox 360 version.

Albert Penello, group marketing manager for the Xbox 360, hinted to Kotaku this week that the hefty backwards compatibility update the system received in November could be its last. "I don't know if we have plans to do any more releases," he told the site. "It feels like we kind of hit the point of diminishing returns there."
Now, if you were the sort to assume the worst about giant corporations you could theorize that Microsoft realizes that every new back compat game lowers the chance of you buying the Xbox Originals version, which makes new additions less attractive. For our part, we're just depressed that Everything or Nothing still isn't BC. Anything you're still carrying the torch for?

More news from the format war today, and it isn't good for the red camp. Daily Variety has confirmed that Universal's agreement to stick with HD DVD has ended and has not been renewed. Additionally, Paramount has an escape clause in its contract that can be exercised following Warner's departure from the (now dwindling) HD DVD ranks. The article highlights various ongoing commitments both companies have to the format, but we've heard these kind of promises before from studios. It's feeling like a party where everyone leaves at once; nobody wants to be the first out the door, but everyone's looking in that direction.

Rare has rather predictably refused to say anything about GoldenEye making its way to Live Arcade.
Rumours swept from an Xbox Evolved piece claiming Microsoft, Rare, and Bond licence holders Activision had agreed to offer it on the service.
Evidence was, well, sketchy - based upon "very reliable sources" and promises the site had seen it with its own eyes.
If this does all turn out to be true, then you should apparently expect polished presentation and Live multiplayer from the N64 classic.
Speculation also suggests Rare will unleash more of its back catalogue after GoldenEye, pointing at hits like Perfect Dark and Banjo-Kazooie.
Or they could make another Viva Pinata! That's what we'd do! Listen to us, Rare!

The United States Army is working with Microsoft to sponsor the first Halo 3 tournament to be held over Xbox Live. The tournament -- which is sadly limited to U.S. gamers only -- begins in April, and will feature prizes for top players.
Leading up to the tournament, the US Army will sponsor a series of "Basic Combat Training" mini-contests through Xbox Live, where players register and play Halo 3 on certain days in order to win. Registration has already begun for the first contest, entitled "Sniper School," and gameplay will begin on January 19. Registration for the main tournament will begin in March.

Sega has given the first detail of its partnership with International Sports Multimedia to create official games of the Beijing 2008 Olympics.
Eurocom Entertainment is behind 360, PS3 and PC versions of the game (the only ones being talked about at the moment) that'll be available this summer. Sega says the games will feature "authentic simulations" of over 35 events and incorporate control schemes that allow n00bs to learn how to play the game "while providing experienced gamers the chance to set new records".
That old chestnut. How hard can it be to learn the old "bash-the-buttons-as-fast-as-you-can" technique? There'll also be online game modes that hope to bring out the Olympic Spirit in us all, but we doubt it somehow - especially over Xbox Live.
"After the successful launch of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, we are delighted to announce the official video game of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games," said Gary Knight, marketing director at Sega. "Combining an enjoyable game with a truly global sporting license will provide a fantastic sports game experience for gamers everywhere".
More in the build up to the opening ceremony. In the meantime, take a look at the first screens below, taken from the 360 version.

The BBC News had a sit down with Bill Gates at CES recently and instead of asking him their own questions, they asked him their viewers. This gem, the first in the Q&A video, asked Gates about the hardware issues that have plagued the Xbox 360, almost since launch.
We've had a lot of questions from people who weren't really happy with the kind of service they've been getting from Xbox in the last few years... What are you going to do to ensure that new consoles are more reliable than previous versions.
Well we certainly had to apologize to our uses about a number of box that had to be replaced. We did that for free for all of those people, we've gotten a lot of positive feedback about the way we handled it. We've got incredible reliability on the new work we've done. Our commitment is that it will be the most reliable video game box out there. People really love the Xbox because of the content, but we've got to make sure that the hardware never stands in the way of that.
Later in the interview he was asked about Vista and the possibility of releasing a version that would be no-frills, but still support game playing.
Any chance of a no-frills operating system? Just a system that plays PC games and a few basics. I hate the compatibility issues Vista has. And he ends "Help"
Ha ha. Well Vista has been a very successful product. Obviously because it is so broadly used and connects up to everything we get a lot of feedback. Things to improve, new things to work on. We're hard at work on things ,we do downloads of improvements all of the time and of course there will be a major new version coming along. So Vista is very successful, ties into the new hardware advances, but we love getting the feedback. People are very passionate about their PC. They use it more than anything else.
Are you proud of Vista, because a lot of people are questioning whether you should be.
No, I'm very proud of Vista. Like all of the products we ship as soon as we get it out we hear how we could do this differently and that differently but it has been a very important product for the industry a lot of great things were done in Vista. Now we are hard at work on what comes next.

Burnout 3 - for many the best in Criterion's kinetic driving series - is coming to Xbox Originals this Monday. It'll be available across all major territories with the exception of Japan for 1200 Microsoft Points.
The game joins other Xbox classics such as Halo, Psychonauts and Fable on Microsoft's Marketplace service and comes just weeks before the latest instalment in the series, Burnout Paradise, is released on January 25. The asking price for the download, 1200 Microsoft Points, translates as £10.20 or $14.99 in Earth money.

Angry Texans have marched to court and filed a lawsuit against Microsoft for its shoddy Live performance over Christmas.
The probably-cowboys claimed the platform holder had misrepresented itself and breached its contract through negligence.
"Microsoft knew the increase in subscriptions would increase game-play on its servers, yet failed to provide adequate access and service to Xbox Live and its subscribers," read the filing.
The trio of accusers are reportedly asking for around USD 5 million in compensation, which sounds like rather a lot given that they would just have been killed and mocked by a bunch of teenagers anyway.
Late last week Microsoft popped its head out and offered Live Gold subscribers one free XBLA game as an apology for connectivity issues over the festive season, although it's not yet clear whether you will be able to choose your game or simply get what you're given.
It also did its fair share of New Year boasting, after it boosted its worldwide Xbox 360 sales up to 17.7 million.

Being total addicts of Namco's bonkers city-crushing roll-'em-up, we practically know the demo of Beautiful Katamari released on OXM's cover disc months ago off by heart - and now the full game finally has a release date.
February is when the waiting will end, and we'll finally get to smash over the Great Wall of China, batter our way through Paris and stick Zeus to our 800 metre Katamari of death and suffering in glorious 720p. It's going to be awesome.
We reviewed the full game back in October (and you should check that out now) - that's how long we've been waiting for this game.
Fans will know what to expect - a crazy Japanese soundtrack, a tiny green hammerhead alien that kills the world with giant sticky balls and, for the first time in the series, online multiplayer.
Sold.

Ubisoft has spread word that Dark Messiah of Might & Magic: Elements will be out on 8th February.
It was one of a handful of titles to be dated by the publisher in its latest release schedule.
Joining it were tumbles from a pair of Wii offerings: Nitrobike sliding from 18th January to 8th February, and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Hard Evidence - CSI: CSI as we might call it - that fell from January back to 14th March.
Elsewhere Haze is still lurking in Q4, or not before April in financial speak, but the DS is being given Figure Skating in March so everything is OK.
Smash your face into our release dates page to keep up to speed with when what is where.

PopCap's Peggle, a game that's stolen hearts and lunchtimes in the office, is coming to Xbox Live Arcade.
The developer has given a tentative Q2 2008 release for the latest iteration, ShackNews reports.
An addictive blighter of the casual gaming variety, Peggle's kind of like an upside-down Breakout.
Played in 2D, you're required to clear stages of pegs with a ball shot from the top of the screen. Much ball-bouncing entertainment ensues.

Following Warner's departure from the HD-DVD ship last week, Microsoft is once again fielding questions regarding the future of its Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive add-on. As is consistent with comments made previously by Scott Henson and Peter Moore, the HD-DVD supporter is still open to a Blu-ray drive should Toshiba's high-definition film format meet its demise. Speaking to Reuters, Xbox's group marketing manager Albert Penello has called it "something we'll have to consider" if "consumer choice" demands it.
Microsoft's initial decision to keep HD-DVD separate from the Xbox 360 hardware has always been trotted out under the "consumer choice" banner, with cost reduction cited as an immediate benefit. Of course, it also makes bailing out a lot easier should white flags start to go up. It may seem strange to envision Microsoft supporting a format so entwined with a competing console, but the company's not likely to shed a tear for discs when there's money to be made in the Xbox Live Video Marketplace.

Resting their cred on "very reliable sources" and evidence that they claim to have seen, Xbox Evolved is reporting that Nintendo 64 classic Goldeneye will be coming to the Xbox Live Arcade shortly before Activision (the current 007 IP holder) releases their new James Bond title. The news comes (according to the site) after an agreement between Microsoft, Rareware, MGM Studios and Activision. XE says the game will feature new graphics and online multiplayer, and that other Rare games may be in the pipeline like Banjo Kazooie and Perfect Dark.
OK, sounds great, but is it true? We have no evidence one way or the other, but we think it would at least make sense for all the parties. Microsoft gets more solid XBLA titles, Rare (which is owned by Microsoft) reminds people of the company's glory days and MGM gets more publicity for James Bond. As for Activision, well, we already know they're not above pimping out a license for cash. We'll keep you updated.

Canadian Zune hopefuls have the spring months of 2008 circled in marker on their calendars, but they're going to want to keep that marker out. Though the Zune hardware itself will be launching this Spring, the Zune Marketplace and the all-you-can-eat Zune Pass services won't be launching until later in 2008. Aww, don't look at them like that. It wasn't like the other guys had their offering up in running in Canada right away either.
