Don Mattrick: "I think, candidly, people are way, way under-indexing how hard we're punching"
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]microsoft.com
Microsoft is ready to invest around $1 billion in the development of exclusive games for the Xbox One.
That's according to a report from Official Xbox Magazine, in which Don Mattrick and Phil Spencer discuss Microsoft's strategy for first-party development. The entertainment focus of the Xbox One reveal event led to widespread accusations that the company had neglected the gamers on which its business is built. However, Mattrick believes that the breadth of the Xbox One offering has been under-estimated.
"We just ran through our [release slate] and counted the number of exclusives, and looked at the amount of money that we're spending and the deals that we have, exclusive windows and [things to create differentiation]," he said.
"I think, candidly, people are way, way under-indexing how hard we're punching."
Even before the event, Microsoft pressed the idea that its E3 presentation would be focused on games, but it did reveal that it has 15 exclusive games ready for the Xbox One's first year, including 8 new IPs.
"There are great hits, there's innovation, and there are world class creators plugged in," Mattrick continued. "You know, I keep track of it all, and I hope everyone here does - we kind of look back at all the different years and at what we shipped, how many units have sold. There's a lot of hyperbole about things, but I think we're going to deliver."
The doubt surrounding Microsoft's core game strategy is just one of many pressing issues to be addressed at E3. So far, the company's messaging around controversial topics like the Xbox One's online requirements and its approach to used games has been confusing, with senior executives occasionally contradicting one another when speaking to the press.
Microsoft's E3 press conference will be take place on June 10, 2013.

“Thanks to everyone for your comments and feedback, we are definitely listening.”
That’s the message from Microsoft’s chief of staff for interactive entertainment business Aaron Greenberg, who has taken to Twitter to assure fans that the Xbox One has not forgotten gamers.
“[The] mood is positive, [it’s] good to be able to start sharing what we are doing. But [there are] too many details to cover in one day. Stay tuned.
“[There are] a lot of assumptions [being made] but very little based on facts. We will share more at E3. We will get it right. Trust me our system is made by gamers for gamers. E3 is all about the games. Cannot wait to share with everyone!”
There was even a kind word for indie devs, who until now have reportedly felt shunned by Microsoft’s new architecture.
“We will absolutely support indie devs,” he added. [They are] key to our future and a lot of them were part of Xbox 360 success.”

Microsoft IS planning on courting indie games developers to produce titles for the Xbox One.
It was reported last week that indie devs would need to seek the services of a publisher if they wished to get their games on Xbox One. But in seemingly another PR U-turn the platform holder has now claimed this is no longer true.
"We're going to have an independent creator program," Microsoft’s interactive entertainment boss Don Mattrick toldKotaku. "We're going to sponsor it. We're going to give people tools. We're going to give more information."
"That is something we think – I think – is important. That's how I started in the industry. There's no way we're going to build a box that doesn't support that.
"Indie creators exist right inside our ecosystem. Probably the best example of a huge success is Minecraft. The work that Notch did [was] pretty amazing in the PC space. We're going to support those guys.”
Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg this morning promised that Microsoft is listening to the games community and pledged to “get it right” with its new machine.

MCV has received word from retail sources that pre-orders for the Xbox One are tracking ahead of PS4 in many UK stores.
In fact, one told us that in the 24 hours after Xbox One’s reveal last week the total number of pre-orders it received for Microsoft’s machine outstripped the total number of PS4 pre-orders it had accrued since Sony’s reveal in February.
There is some good news for Sony – the same sources revealed a significant increase in PS4 pre-orders in the day following the Xbox One reveal.
The consensus is that many gamers were waiting until they’d had a look at both machines before making their buying decision.
The numbers may well some surprise some online onlookers who have seemed to delight in revelling in the PR mess Microsoft has created itself since last week’s reveal.
But they should also serve as a reminder that the angry internet masses are often not representative of the wider buying public.
UPDATE: Due to the apparent uproar that ensued at the use of the word "some" in the headline, we have removed it. We used the word "some" as we have only spoken to "some" retailers, not all of them. But if a less specific headline will appease readers then so be it.

EA could be set for a hugely fan-pleasing reveal at E3 next month – Mirror’s Edge 2.
After an Amazon Germany listing for the game was spotted last week, OXM has now noticed a similar listing on the Italian arm of Amazon.
Both listings have now been removed.
Interestingly, the Italian site listed only Xbox One as the supported platform. The older German listing had the game down for both Xbox One and Xbox 360.
OXM speculates that the game could be one of the 15 exclusive Xbox One titles Microsoft’s mentioned at last week’s console reveal.
In November of last year former EA free-to-play boss Ben Cousins said that “it is general knowledge in the Stockholm dev scene that Mirror's Edge 2 is in production at DICE”.
Mirror’s Edge was an experimental 2008 title released on consoles and PC. While presented in first person it featured little in the way of gunplay and instead centred on acrobatically traversing the highly stylised environment and engaging in a spot of fisticuffs.
A spin-off was released on smartphones.
Although critically lauded the game was not a strong commercial performer – although the ongoing calls for a sequel certainly suggests an appetite for the IP remains.

What exactly is left of Infinity Ward? The FPS studio that invented the Call of Duty series and birthed the Modern Warfare phenomenon was left in ruins three years ago.
A dispute between the publisher and its studio founders over Modern Warfare 2 royalties and planned defections to EA saw 46 senior members of staff quit the team.
It forced Infinity Ward to team up with another Activision studio, the new Sledgehammer Games, to finish Modern Warfare 3. Online reports suggested this was the start of the end for Infinity Ward, bereft of leadership and doomed to a future of ‘co-developing’ the series it created.
But it wasn’t.
“Early on with Modern Warfare we decided we need to bring in someone to help us make that game,” says Infinity Ward’s executive producer Mark Rubin, one of the few long-serving members of staff to remain at the studio.
The plan, he explains, was to use partner studio Sledgehammer as cover while Infinity Ward returned “to full capacity at a pace that made sense to us. It wasn’t a situation where we went out and said ‘Shit, we need 50 more guys, go out there on the street and hire them.’ We were actually able to hire the people that we would have hired even if the Modern Warfare 2 thing hadn’t happened. We are now a fully fledged team. We are actually bigger than we have ever been before. That is the strangest thing for us, because with games getting harder and harder to make, it is taking more and more people. So this is something that would have happened regardless of that situation at all.”
Silver linings, then as the upheaval dovetailed with the ramp up for Call of Duty: Ghosts. This is not just a fresh start for Infinity Ward, but a new sub-brand in a series that celebrates its tenth birthday this year. Oh, and it was the crown jewel third-party game in this week’s Xbox reveal.
Ghosts still looks like Call of Duty; it’s still a cinematic war-based shooter, but with new visuals and a new story, penned by action Hollywood writer and director Stephen Gaghan (Traffic/Syriana).

The AMD Jaguar CPU that lies at the heart of both PS4 and Xbox One may not be the gaming beast we had expected.
Rock Paper Shotgun got its hands on an 4-core 1.5Ghz variant of the 8-core 1.6Ghz chip found in both consoles. It speculates that once the multitasking nature of both consoles is taken into account, only four cores are likely to be left for gaming computations.
The site’s conclusions are less than encouraging.
“Is it any good? In a word, no. Not in a gaming context,” it stated. “To be fair to AMD, the A4-5000 is a nice chip for its intended market – mobile devices at the cheaper end of the market. But as a gaming CPU?
“In raw processing terms, these four Jaguar cores have slightly less than a quarter the grunt of a Core i5-3570K. It’s the same story on a core-by-core basis. Less than one quarter of the performance.
“On the one hand, it does rather look like [PC gamers will] pretty much never have to upgrade your CPU to cope with the next decade of console ports. Almost any half decent CPU you currently have will be game enough.”
The same author has previously claimed that the Jaguar chip will even fall behind AMD’s FX series by a margin of 50 per cent.
Good news for PC gamers, then. But what does it mean for the next-generation of games? Is thesupposed generational leap offered by the new hardware actually going to hold gaming back?
“I just can’t see how developers are going to really ramp up game engine technology with these CPU cores. Next-gen AI, fancy physics, don’t see how it’s possible,” the site adds.
“At this point, somebody will pitch up and opine that they’ll shove some of that onto the GPU. But the graphics grunt in the new consoles is merely OK, so where’s the spare headroom? Pinching GPU resources will limit graphical fidelity. Then again, it might just mean nobody bothers at all and we’re doomed to suffer a future largely populated with console-compromised ports.”

Beyond Xbox One's TV capabilities, multitasking, nebulous used game policyand terrifying Kinect features, Microsoft has also hinted at the possibility of cloud-enhanced games. Specifically, the company has said elements that aren't sensitive to the inherent latency of cloud computing – things like lighting and physics models – could be improved. Microsoft's Redmond Game Studios and Platforms GM Matt Booty has even gone so far as to say that "[for] every Xbox One available in your living room we'll have three of those devices in the cloud available."
Now, Eurogamer's tech-minded Digital Foundry has examined Microsoft's claim to see how feasible it really is. DF notes that it all boils down to latency and bandwidth. Bandwidth is a particularly sticky issue, as current transfer speeds aren't even close to what consoles can achieve on local hardware, ruling out any possibility for real-time calculations in the cloud. There are some less intensive possibilities though, including Microsoft's own example of lighting. DF notes, however, that such lighting would be slow to update, making it best suited for things like time of day changes.
Other possibilities include things like NPC AI for games with large worlds. "Cloud computing could run world simulation and just update the player's local world over time, allowing the world to live and respond to player actions," writes DF, though it would be limited to certain types of games (like The Elder Scrolls or Grand Theft Auto).
DF concludes that Microsoft's message about Xbox One's cloud capabilities is still vague, and that there's no clear incentive for third-party developers to utilize it when developing multiplatform games. Digital Foundry acknowledges the potential for "less exciting, though certainly valuable" possibilities, mostly for multiplayer games, but believes Microsoft will have to "prove its position with strong ideas and practical demonstrations."

Dance-yourself-slim gym cult Zumba Fitness is headed to Xbox One.Zumba Fitness: World Party will launch on Microsoft's new machine later this year, and will also be available for Wii, Wii U and Xbox 360.You may remember Zumba Fitness from its mega-selling initial incarnation which dominated the UK games charts during the summer of 2011.It held the UK all-formats chart top spot for a gut-busting 10 consecutive weeks and 13 weeks overall - a feat yet to be matched since. That game ended up selling five million copies, while its hastily released sequel Zumba Fitness 2 shifted another million. It's unclear how well subsequent releases Zumba Fitness Core and Zumba Fitness Rush sold, however.World Party is being developed by Zoë Mode, the British developer that helped out on the EyeToy: Play and SingStar franchises and also created the fun charity-funding puzzler Chime.Expect new songs, dance styles and 14 "celebrity Zumba instructors" including Beto, Gina Grant, Kass Martin, Melissa Chiz, Heidy Torres and Loretta Bates. Wowzers.

In response to concerns over privacy with its next-gen console, Microsoft has confirmed that the Xbox One and it's all-seeing Kinect sensor can be turned "completely off".
Concerns have arisen over the implications for potential breach of privacy with an always-on device that's equipped with an advanced camera and microphone array and a constant connection to the internet. That you can turn on the console with a voice command - therefore suggesting that the Kinect sensor is 'always listening' even when in standby mode - has proven particularly unsettling for some.
Concerns have even been shared by the German federal commissioner for data protection and freedom of information Peter Schaar, who highlighted "Kinect's ability to monitor users even when the console is switched off".
Seeking to allay fears, Microsoft has confirmed that both the Xbox One and its Kinect - which is required for the console to function - can be shut down completely.
"Yes, you can turn the system completely off," a Microsoft rep toldKotaku. "This would use no power and turn everything off.
"We are designing the new Kinect with simple, easy methods to customize privacy settings, provide clear notifications and meaningful privacy choices for how data will be used, stored and shared.
The rep went on to assure that privacy protection will be a key focus for the new console.
"We know our customers want and expect strong privacy protections to be built into our products, devices and services, and for companies to be responsible stewards of their data. Microsoft has more than ten years of experience making privacy a top priority. Kinect for Xbox 360 was designed and built with strong privacy protections in place and the new Kinect will continue this commitment. We'll share more details later," they said.
Xbox One was revealed at an event on May 21, when Microsoft confirmed a launch for 'later this year'.

Former employee's deals bring in big money for AMD
AMD's deal to provide the system-on-a-chip for Microsoft's Xbox One is worth more than $3 billion. That information comes from the LinkedIn profile of Bob Feldstein, former AMD vice president of strategic development and current Nvidia vice president of technology licensing. Feldstein left AMD in July of 2012, after handling the deals that found the company's silicon in the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Wii U.
"AMD provided a custom silicon solution to Microsoft for the XBox One, a game console and entertainment device," reads Feldstein's profile.
"My involvement was focused on business management and supply agreement negotiations. This required the coordination of multiple functional teams within AMD, as well as regular customer meetings with leadership teams responsible for handling the challenges of complex, multi-year deals. This project is valued at [$3 billion]."
In January of this year, AMD accused Feldstein and several other executives ofstealing more than 100,000 proprietary documents and electronic files before leaving for Nvidia. AMD also alleged that Feldstein recruited one of the other defendants and possibly other employees for Nvidia.
AMD having chips in all three consoles should help the company, which has been behind rivals Nvidia and Intel. The company reported a net loss of $146 million for the first quarter of 2013, versus the net income reported by each competitor during the same period.

Microsoft's streaming event found a ton of viewers
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]microsoft.com
Microsoft has announced that 8.45 million people watched the stream of the Xbox One reveal. According to Microsoft streaming partner Akamai, the reveal was the most watched live broadcast in the company's history, outdoing the 2012 Presidential election night, the 2010 World Cup, and the 2011 Royal Wedding. Microsoft also tripled its previous concurrency record for events on Xbox.com.
"With the unveiling of Xbox One, the all-in-one entertainment system for a new generation, we knew immediately Xbox fans were tuning into the announcement in record numbers. We are humbled and grateful for your loyalty and interest in the unveiling of Xbox One," wrote Xbox Wire editor Lisa Gurry.
1.73 million people viewed the event on Spike TV, making it the number one show in its timeslot on May 21.

Germany's federal commissioner for data protection Peter Schaar has expressed concerns over the privacy implications of the Xbox One.
Polygon translates a German news report that Schaar has been looking into Microsoft’s console since its unveiling earlier this month.
More specifically, Schaar is investigating the hardware’s always-on capabilities and the new Kinect’s ability to listen and respond to commands even when powered down; as well as the latter’s other capabilities, like being able to see in the dark, recording a user’s heart rate and tracking muscle movement.
"The Xbox [One] registered all sorts of personal information about me," Schaar said. “Reaction rates, my learning or emotional states.”
“You are then processed on a remote server and possibly even to third parties. Whether it be deleted ever, the person concerned cannot influence.”
The Xbox One will require a Kinect to function, though the peripheral’s settings can apparently be adjusted. Microsoft has already responded to the announcement, saying that user privacy is a top priority.

The internet may have spent the majority of last week shouting loudly at Microsoft, but it seems that the view of the average consumer is far more positive.
Blockbuster has revealed that since its announcement last week the Xbox One has broken all previous pre-order launches in Blockbuster’s 24-year history.
“We are delighted by the huge number of pre orders that we have received so far for the new Microsoft console,” the retailer’s head of games James Morton stated.
“At Blockbuster, we have a fantastic array of adrenaline-fuelled console games for sale or rental. Our expert staff know gaming and they know consoles and these pre-orders are testament to our customers’ trust in us as a leading gaming retailer.
“With Sony releasing the PS4 in the near future, the next few months are going to be an exciting time for our staff and customers at Blockbuster and we can’t wait to hear more details from both Sony and Microsoft at the E3 Expo next month.”

Xbox One will be a success from the off because hardcore gamers will buy every new machine that’s released.
That’s according to Microsoft’s corporate VP Phil Spencer who believes that his company’s new machine will win the allegiance of dedicated gaming fans.
"I think, coming out of this generation, being the market leader globally and really differentiating with online and that community, our third parties have been pretty eager to partner with us and I think you'll see between the 21st and what we do at E3, I think you'll see some really special and unique things," Spencer told a room of journalists includingOXM before last week’s reveal event.
"We believe that if all you want is gaming, you'll still pick us, at the end of the day.
"The super core guys, they will buy everything. They will buy all devices, but most people really only do buy one device, and if you're going to think about what that one device is, we believe an all-in-one system that does the best games and TV and entertainment will be something that's really unique.
"And then some of the things that we're doing with the architecture about how fast those experiences are, how you can do more than one thing at a time – that's going to be something that I think will heavily differentiate us, and the other thing you've got to think about is, this is our starting point.”

Last week’s Xbox One reveal event was for shareholders and the mainstream, but E3 will be all about games, says Ubisoft Montreal’s Alex Hutchinson. He also had a word of warning for fellow blockbuster game developers – if the industry’s creators fail to produce compelling next generation games, the hardcore audience will ditch new consoles to play games on phones and tablets, he told us.We caught up with Ubisoft Montreal’s creative director last night to get his thoughts on Xbox One’s connected features and what the next generation of Kinect means for game developers. Here’s what Hutchinson told us about Xbox One in full.

Politician questions how data from always-connected console will be used
Germany’s federal data protection commissioner Peter Schaar has voiced his concerns over privacy on the Xbox One.
Speaking to Spiegel, Peter Schaar questioned whether users would be able to control what information was stored on the console and the new Kinect, sparking privacy concerns over how that data will be handled.
Schaar stated that information, such as his emotional state and reaction rates, would be processed on an external server, and was concerned this could then be passed on to third-parties.
“The Xbox continuously records all sorts of personal information about me,” he said.
“Reaction rates, my learning or emotional states. They are then processed on an external server, and possibly even passed on to third-parties. Whether they will ever be deleted, the person can not influence.”

XBMC4XBOX v3.3 Beta 2 is released. XBMC is a free and open source media player software made solely for the first-generation Xbox video-game console. Other than the audio / video playback and media center functionality of XBMC4Xbox, it also has the rather unique ability to catalog and launch original Xbox games, and homebrew applications such as console emulators from the Xbox's built-in harddrive.
XBMC4XBOX v3.3 Beta 2 Changelog:
Following on from Beta 1, Beta 2 is now ready for testing. Changes since 3.3 Beta 1 include
- Skin / Navigation fixes
- Some locale updates
- Workaround for Exif orientation with jpeg-turbo code
One of the changes works around an issue with skins and upper-casing accented letters for non English languages. To workaround this we now include the main navigation strings capitalised (which is how XBMC mainline will handle it for the next release as they have similar problems on some platforms). Currently this has been done for English and Spanish. If you want to help fix this for your language, please open a thread over at the forum, and I will provide instructions. I may well automate a fix for other languages before the final 3.3 release.
