Speaking to Business Week, Microsoft's general manager of global content acquisition and strategy, Ross Honey, painted a somewhat bleak picture for web content on Xbox Live. While The Guild has managed to succeed on Microsoft's platform, it has done so via a sponsorship deal with Sprint. Apparently, finding a different way to monetize a web series -- like inserting ads into programming -- is generally more trouble than it's worth.
Furthermore, Honey tells Business Week that it's important that Microsoft finds content that will "move the needle" -- in other words, content that will appeal to the Xbox audience. Honey pointed out that "gamers love watching things about gaming," noting that the World of Warcraft and Guitar Hero inspired South Park episodes are the most popular shows on Xbox Live.
Failing that, you could always make your web series about Halo.

Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg does not expect recent price cuts for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 to leave a lasting impression on the console sales race.
"I don't believe the price cuts that both companies have made will impact the market dynamics too dramatically in the long term," Greenberg, who is director of product management for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, told our sister site Eurogamer in an interview published today.
"We typically see a month or two of lifts and share adjustments, but then things tend to settle back to roughly the established market ranking."
Sony cut the price of PlayStation 3 to £249 / €299 in Europe last month and introduced a smaller, redesigned console.
Microsoft subsequently cut the price of the Xbox 360 Elite to £199 and retired the old Xbox 360 Premium, although it said the price cut timing was a coincidence.
Both price cuts brought their respective parent companies handsome returns, with Xbox 360 enjoying a 43 per cent sales rise in one UK bank holiday weekend, before Sony was able to celebrate a 999 per cent jump week-to-week following the new PS3's launch and platform price drop.
And while Greenberg is sceptical about the two companies' pricing changes having a long-term effect on the market dynamic, he does see positives.
"We do, however, expect that these new lower prices will bring in more consumers that were potentially a bit resistant to the previous pricing in place," he explained in today's interview, before reiterating that platform-specific content remains a key part of Microsoft's strategy.
"Our focus continues to be on adding more value and more exclusive experiences across games and entertainment, so that consumers will continue to select the Xbox 360 as their console of choice," he said.

Microsoft revealed some of its plans for Zune HD gaming last week, tying in with the launch of its new device. However, it seems it's using advertising to generate revenues from the initial batch of titles.
Ars Technica reports that it takes 30 seconds to load the Zune HD's chess game, with that time filled with a video advertisement for the Kia Soul. Meanwhile, another game, Goo Splat, takes 17 seconds to load, and shows a static ad for the same car.
It will be interesting to see how Zune HD users react. The games are free, but there is no option yet to purchase an ad-free version. Meanwhile, it's unclear whether the long loading times are directly a result of the advertising.
However, one piece of positive news for Microsoft is that developers are finding it relatively quick and easy to port their iPhone games to Zune HD.
In fact, developer Foundation42 claims it took just half a day to port its upcoming iPhone puzzler WordMonger to run on Microsoft's device.
"Yesterday we ported it to the Zune HD in 12 hours!" they say. "We are really hoping that Microsoft can provide a way to publish third party games on the Zune app store soon.

Cpasjuste of PSP and Pandora fame has released a very exciting loader for the Xbox 360, heres the details from the readme:
Xmenu 0.3
Xmenu is an elf loader with a basic gui.
Installation
Copy the file xenon.elf and the "xenon" folder to the root of your usb disk/pen.
Load it with the free60.org hack.
Changelog
Version 0.3 :
- It's now possible to load custom icons. Put a ".png" image (32 bits, with alpha channel, 32*32 pixels would be better)
alongside your executable file, with the ".ico" extension. Example :
If you have an executable named "snes9x.elf", put the ".png" icon in the same directory with the name "snes9x.ico".
Version 0.2 :
- Graphics data is now loaded at startup, allowing to customise.
- Smaller fonts, this allow more items to be displayed.
Version 0.1 :
- Alpha testing version.

Game maker Foundation 42 is one of the first developers to get an app working on the Zune HD, and it looks like it wasn't too difficult a process, taking only 12 hours. This is a good sign.
The game, a fun little word puzzler called Wordmonger, is already available on several platforms (iPhone, various desktop OSes) but using the XNA, Foundation 42 was able to port it over to the Zune HD. Now that we know it's not an incredibly difficult process, we've got to question Microsoft's decision to lock the Zune HD to free, first-party apps. Right now, to get Wordmonger onto your Zune HD, you have to download the developer kit and use another piece of software, rather than just heading into the Zune .
We hope Microsoft is questioning the decision too—the Zune HD is a really powerful little gadget, and that Tegra chip is capable of some impressive feats. We'd love to see the Zune HD opened up for more developers, and if there's enough buzz Microsoft might eventually do just that.

Let it be known: we liked the Zune HD before it was popular, before all the poseurs jumped on the bandwagon with their tight-fitting jeans and their hairstyles. If various stores on the internet are to be believed, the Zune HD is selling out in a pretty big way. Amazon is listing a 1-2 month wait for the 16GB model and a 1-3 week wait for the 32GB, Best Buy has the player listed as "backordered," and New Egg shows "sold out." Microsoft's own store doesn't seem to be having these stocking problems, but we suppose that's to be expected. How about you, are you being kept from the Zune HD your heart desires? How does this make you feel?

In releasing the Zune HD, Microsoft decided not to open up software development on the new Zune to third parties yet. Today, Microsoft released a handful of free games for the Zune HD: Texas hold 'em, Sudoku, Space Battle 3, Shell Game, Of the Future, Hexic, Goo Splat and Chess, as well as calculator and weather apps. Users, however, are required to view an ad (up to 30 seconds in length) while the game starts up. While ad-supported free games are also on other platforms, like the iPhone, the difference here is that those iPhone games are from third parties and not from Apple."
Reader Rock3t notes related news that the Zune HD will be getting 3D games.

Microsoft is looking to add 18 new faces to its payroll in an attempt to bolster development on software implementing its new body movin' technology, Project Natal. These positions run the gamut from producer to audio director, all of which will be based out of Microsoft Game Studios' campus in Redmond, Washington -- indicating that MGS is building an entire team to work on future Natal projects.

Microsoft's John Noonan, who is currently working on Crackdown 2 and is co-host of Microsoft Game Studios' Platform Biased podcast, got folks in a tizzy when he tweeted about the Crackdown 2 Zune HD. We got in touch with Noonan, who let us know that this laser-etched model -- along with many others sporting Xbox-exclusive brands -- are available as part of the Zune Original Program at the Zune Store.
The "Xbox Series" features Halo ODST, Gears of War 2 and Forza 3, along with a few others. There doesn't appear to be an extra charge for the advertising fan appreciation, so the only thing you'll pay for is the Zune -- which, we're told is like an iPod.

Microsoft has revealed another 250GB Xbox 360 bundle following yesterday's announcement of a Modern Warfare 2 deal.
The Forza Motorsport 3 Super Elite Bundle will be released on October 23 and comes with a standard edition of the game, the 250GB HDD, headset and two controllers, and retail for £249 in the UK.
Yesterday, Microsoft revealed a limited edition Modern Warfare 2 Xbox 360 SKU, although no European pricing has yet been confirmed for the package.
Microsoft has also said it would not be selling the 250GB drive separately.
