Don't be sad. We know it hurts but that's what happens when your emotions exceed reason. The Zune HD will be a US exclusive when it goes on sale September 15th just as it was when the original Zune brownie went on sale back in November 2006. Here's what Microsoft told Ars:
"For the time being the Zune HD device will remain US only. Right now we are focused on deploying an exciting service in the form of Zune Video to 18 markets. We are looking at potential future hardware experiences for these markets, but do not have anything to announce right now."
Plenty of fodder for conspiracy types here. First, that means Canada is out, even though older Zune models are already on sale there. But the words "for the time being" leave plenty of wiggle room for an international launch window. And what does Microsoft mean by the generically phrased, "future hardware experiences?" Are they referring to a Zune service destined to "transcend Zune the device" later this year? Perhaps. One thing is clear: consumers are far more excited about the Zune HD than the original -- especially now that Apple's cat is out of the bag. Microsoft could be leaving a ton of money on the table if they don't go global, quick.

Microsoft has released an official statement in response to The NPD Group's US game industry sales results for August of 2009, focusing on its Xbox 360 console's continued year-over-year growth and a successful sales promotion on its Live Arcade digital download service.
According to Microsoft, Xbox 360 console sales from January through August are up nearly 17 per cent over those of the same period in 2008. The company also said that sales of its Xbox 360 Elite model, which had a price reduction in August, surpassed the company's expectations.
Microsoft also revealed that third party sales on the Xbox 360 totaled USD 130.4 million for the month, and that its Summer of Arcade campaign - which included digital releases Shadow Complex and Marvel vs. Capcom 2, among others - saw sales more than double of those during last year's promotion.

“We are committing to only doing it when it makes sense”
Microsoft has stated it will not be shoehorning Natal functionality into Halo games any time soon.
Speaking to VideoGamer.com, Halo 3: ODST producer Alex Cutting stated the company would only include its highly anticipated full body motion control technology in its hardcore FPS series when it became relevant.
“A lot of people are interested in what Natal’s presence in Halo is going to be,” he said. “We are committing to only doing it when it makes sense. We are not going to produce a gimmicky feature that just takes advantage of motion controls when it doesn’t feel right.”
Cutting declined to discuss “any specific plans” but assured fans the company would be investigating any opportunities the technology presents. He added that his was confident Natal could be used in a first-person shooter.
“I think Natal can be integrated into most genres in some way,” he said. “I think FPS, there’s a lot to be said for dual stick control. Before dual sticks came around and before Halo: Combat Evolved established it on a console, people were pretty doubtful that it could ever move from keyboard and mouse.”

OK, not literally, but enough that Soundwave's Autobot colleague was the first thing I thought of. Him, or a shower radio.
But that's not negative space at top, or a handle. It's the screen of an "Xbox 1080" portable concept created by Carl Archambeault of Milwaukee, so standard concept disclaimers - not real, does not function, is not commissioned or endorsed by the company - apply. It's still a cool imagining of a Microsoft entry into the portable market. But they haven't done it and, considering the Zune, probably for good reason.

Online cross-platform titles "just work better on Xbox Live", says Microsoft Europe's VP of Interactive Entertainment, Chris Lewis.
The comments come from an interview in trade mag MCV (spotted OXM), in which Lewis reveals there are more PC-Xbox compatible games coming in the next 18 months.
"We have a great journey through to Christmas," he said. "There are key titles that are exclusives but also great cross-platform titles that will just work better on Xbox Live."
"And in terms of content and networking, we have more content partnerships for Xbox Live."
Better, perhaps. But we certainly wish we could take off those Games for Windows handcuffs.

Microsoft released one helluva janky product when it launched the Xbox 360. I know this, because BOTH of my 360s are currently being repaired in Frankfurt. Ugh.
As well as the Red Ring of Death (which afflicted both of my machines), the 360 also does a nice line in scratching discs. It’s for this reason that one infuriated gamer is attempting to sue Microsoft for a cool $50,000, arguing that the company sold him the console knowing it scratched game discs, rendering them unplayable.
Jason Johnson is the David facing Microsoft’s Goliath in this story, and already Madison County Circuit Judge Daniel Stack has denied Microsoft’s motion to dismiss the case. Reports the Madison Record:
“Johnson is suing the company for alleged defects in its X-Box 360 video game console. Johnson alleges the company sold the product knowing it scratched video games and made them unplayable…
“Johnson is seeking damages from the Washington-based company’s alleged violation of the Illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act, negligence, breach of implied warranty and strict product liability.”
Microsoft’s attorney feebly argued that because Johnson didn’t personally buy the Xbox 360 (the system was a gift from his wife), the case should be dropped. To which everybody howled with laughter, I would hope.

A panicked person in Kirkland, WA called local police on Wednesday, claiming they saw someone walking down the street with an AK-47. It was actually a Bungie employee carrying an overgrown model of a Halo sniper rifle, which resembles an AK-47 as much as a Volkswagen resembles a Formula 1 racer.'
Halo 3: ODST is set to launch on September 22nd, and fans got some new details and early looks at the game during PAX.

Microsoft has revealed the winners of the 2009 Dream Build Play competition, picking four champions of the Xbox Live Indie Games scene.
Dean Dodrill takes top honours for "Dust: An Elysian Tail", a side-scrolling action RPG painted by hand in a cartoon telly-show style. The official Dust: An Elysian Tale website can tell you more.
Second prize goes to Panya Inversin for Max Blastronaut, a 3D space-shooter-cum-brawler offering co-op play for four. Again, there's plenty more info on the official Max Blastronaut website.
Rotor'scope - The Secret of the Endless Energy, a puzzle game that tests intelligence, takes third (the Rotor'scope website has more information). And martial arts action game HurricaneX2 Evolution finishes fourth.
Over 350 games were submitted to the competition, and prize money of $75,000 will be shared between the top four finishers: $40,000 for the winner, $20,000 for second, $10,000 for third and $5000 for fourth.
Website XONA has compiled a list of the top 20 entrants with trailers and short descriptions for each, where applicable.

“Unless Microsoft's playing a nasty trick on its loyal fanbase, the latest Zune newsletter confirms a feature-laden software update, very likely what we've been calling Zune 4.0, is due out on Tuesday, September 15th, the same day as Zune HD takes its place among its fading peers.”
I haven't actually gotten my newsletter yet so I'll have to take Engadget's word that that it has a real newsletter. In some of the least surprising news I've heard in a while, its essentially confirmed now that the next iteration of the Zune software will launch with the Zune HD on the 15th.
I'm definitely looking forward to many of the reported features, especially HD movie content. I keep dreaming of the day that I no longer buy my content on media and get it all digitally and I hope that this moves me one step closer!
