Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb has explained that Xbox Live was taken down earlier to pave the way for new social features like Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm.
We thought you might have been worried.
Those features arrive in full later this year, and mean socialites like Eurogamer TV's Johnny Minkley can keep the world abreast of their movements from the safety of their sofas. Fascinating. Put the Twitter down.
The update should only take a few minutes if you are yet to be prompted to patch.

Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima took to the stage at the Tokyo Game Show today to confirm his enthusiasm for Project Natal.
He was speaking during a creators' panel discussion along with Capcom's Keiji Inafune and Toshihiro Nagoshi, creator of Super Monkey Ball. Kojima began by explaining how he initially felt on seeing Natal in action, comparing it to the first time he saw a 3D game and played with a family computer. "It was that kind of shock," he said. "I was surprised how advanced Microsoft was... This is going to raise the bar. People and machines are going to be connected through Natal and complement each other."
Inafune then chimed in, telling the audience he doesn't reckon Natal will be a flash in the pan. "You don't have to do away with the technologies you have, you can build on them. So technology-wise, [Natal] surpasses anything that exists now. It treasures the current tradition and at the same time, builds for the future... I see the potential in Natal for not being a transitional fad."
According to Kojima, Natal doesn't just have potential for entertaining the casual gaming audience either. "Those who don't enjoy games now can probably join us, because it's intuition-based, and of course the casual base is going to be important. But I think the experience will be further improved for core gamers thanks to Natal. I think Natal will allow us to expand the gaming world for them."
Any plans, then? "I would like to come up with a completely innovative game no one has thought of in the past," Kojima said. "But I have core users who are my fans and I don't want to leave them behind - I want to cater to core users... Maybe I should, metaphorically speaking, come up with a car that can fly, so my users can follow me."
In fact, Kojima thinks Project Natal has potential even beyond games. "Natal is very innovative. 360 means very circular, but it's more spherical than circular... I believe games will deploy this technology at the outset, but it has the potential to change our lifestyles dramatically - the way you do shopping, the way you line up in a queue...
"And Natal is going to change situations in living rooms. Probably the way you move your muscles will change. Probably Johnny Depp, the way he moves, is also going to change," said Kojima. "It is impossible to do this translation," added the translator.
All three developers talked about the ways Natal could introduce emotions into gaming, which was also a theme during Sony boss Kaz Hirai's TGS speech. Inafune stated, "Films consist of excellent worlds of emotion. I can get excited and cry in films; they have such an impact on our hearts. Maybe that's what's missing in games. Of course there are some emotions, but because we have to use our fingers to interact sometimes it's not easy to have an immersive experience.
"With Natal the games world is probably going to become on a par with films, or games could surpass films," he continued, before suggesting that in future someone like Kojima could be just as respected as a major movie director. He probably didn't mean Uwe Boll.
"Violence, sex and gambling are the three basic themes of the gaming world," said Kojima. "I think we can go beyond that with Natal, which is based around emotions.
"I would like to have a computer game system which can truly understand who I am - movements, expressions, everything," he went on. "I wouldn't call it a robot, exactly, but I have had this dream since I was a kid: AI... Natal is the system which understands me best."

An Xbox 360 firmware update went live overnight/early this morning. Although it lays the foundation for the 360's Facebook and Twitter capabilities, no new features are included in this download.
Major Nelson confirmed the new firmware in a late-night post; also, for any of our friends who were up late and gaming and found the system update spit back a router error when connecting to Xbox Live, that has been totally resolved, tweets the Major.

VGChartz preliminary day one sales figures are in for Halo 3 ODST
Halo 3: OSDT launched yesterday, 22nd September 2009 in most major markets but Japan. Sales expectations for the title were mixed - on one hand it is a Halo title, but at the same time ODST has seen a fair amount of criticism for being charged at full price for what many believe is more of an expansion than a full game. With a critic review average of 8.7 and many reviewers commenting that ODST is indeed worthy of the price tag of a full game, did the sales live up to that of a Halo game?
As reported earlier in the week, final Halo 3: ODST preorders stood at around 1.35m in the Americas - lower than Halo 3's 1.95m but still impressive. Preliminary data is now in, and we can exclusively reveal that day 1 sales in the Americas were just over 1.5 million, with a further 500,000 sold in Europe and other regions. Total Halo 3: ODST sales stand at around 2 million worldwide (vs nearly 3 million for Halo 3's first day back in 2007) - generating over $160m in total revenue. Bungie leaderboards show over 950,000 users have already signed up with ODST.
So how does ODST compare to Halo 3? Sales are down around 30% on day one, but ODST still sits in an pretty exclusive club of games that can sell over two million units in a single day - ODST is comfortably ahead of other big Xbox360 titles like Gears of War 2 and Fable II in the same timeframe and should reach sales of 6-8 million before Halo Reach arrives.
It is still too early to see whether ODST will move much hardware. Conventional wisdom will suggest not really since the game will be selling primarily to those who already own Halo 3 but there will be a small boost associated with the high profile release of the title and general marketing buzz.

Investment bank Caris has lowered it revenue estimates for Microsoft by USD 500 million based on its belief that slowing Xbox 360 sales will drag the software giant down from original projections of USD 12.8 billion to USD 12.3 billion, reports Briefing.com.
The bank believes that the slower hardware sales, while generally resilient in a tough economy, is also in part down to the aggressive price point strategy unveiled by Sony at this year's Gamescom event in Cologne last month.
According to the firm the Xbox 360 stands to lose "modest market share" as the full year revenue estimates falls by USD 800 million to USD 59.1 billion.
The company's share price rose slightly on the opening of the market today by 0.74 per cent to USD 25.96.

We hope at this point we don't have to sell you on the validity of Ars Technica's mole. Whoever the guy/girl is, their track record is fantastic, after correctly predicting everything from the Resident Evil 5 360 bundle to the price cuts the 360 and PS3 just enjoyed. Now, the mole says that Microsoft will be sweetening the deal this holiday season, packing Pure and Lego Batman in with the 360 Elite.
The mole went on to claim that the 802.11n adapter Microsoft has confirmed will debut for $100, while the 802.11g will drop to $79.99. ... Yikes, $20 off a device that should cost $20 in the first place? If true, it's pretty darn cold.

Guitar Hero peripheral maker Red Octane has been adding approximately 2.5 plastic instruments per year to each American household for nearly four years now. If you're using your computer from atop a stack of music game peripherals like we are, you'll be happy (or perhaps dismayed) to hear Red Octane prez Kai Huang told Digital Spy that his company is looking into Project Natal and "a lot of other different technologies that could enhance the Guitar Hero playing experience."
Huang specifically picked out Natal to address the "many different things you can do with it," echoing statements made by MTV Games last month on the next iteration of the Rock Band franchise. He outlined some potential implementations in the "motion detecting; maybe sensing how you're playing, or the ability to use it for interactivity purposes and taking advantage of it for party purposes." Huang, however, remained cagey on specifics, restating his company is still "evaluating it." Though the tech's still in its relative infancy, as of right now it seems that next year's music-rhythm games are going to feel very different than this year's bunch. We've dropped a demonstration of how awesome you might look playing them after the break!

onsumers offered $50 rebate on any Xbox 360 Elite bought before October 5th
In a surprise move, Microsoft has effectively cut another $50 off the price of its high-end Xbox 360 Elite – though the deal is only set to run for two weeks.
Any consumers who buy Microsoft’s 120GB machine by October 5th will be able to send off for a $50 rebate from the platform holder, effectively bringing the machine’s RRP down to $249.
Only last month Microsoft slashed $100 off the price of the machine, meaning that an Elite console currently costs $150 less than it did this time three weeks ago.
MCV has contacted Microsoft UK for comment.

Developer performs technical feat using XNA Game Studio 3.1
Porting games between both Apple’s iPhone and Microsoft’s Zune HD may be easier than initially anticipated.
Mobile games developer Foundation42 has managed to port its iPhone title WordMonger to Microsoft’s handheld rival in under 12 hours, according to report from Redmond Pie.
WordMonger, written in C# using OpenGL, was ported to Zune HD using XNA Game Studio 3.1 software.
Though the alleged twelve hour port highlights the ease in which mobile game developers can expand their reach, companies will still have to jump through Microsoft’s hoops to get their work officially published on the device.
Microsoft’s Brian Seitz recently revealed that developers would not have the opportunity to self-publish games on Zune HD.
Microsoft is instead working with a select number of developers “on a case by case basis”.
“It's not really come one, come all,” Seitz told The Seattle Times.

Microsoft’s Summer of Arcade promotion on Xbox Live, which came to an end last month, helped the digital portal to a 200 per cent increase in revenues, the platform holder has revealed.
Releases in the period included Twisted Pixel’s Splosion man, Capcom’s Marvel vs Capcom 2, Ubisoft’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled, RedLynx’s Trials HD and Epic’s record-breaking Shadow Complex.
Microsoft has also revealed that it’s pioneering online quiz show title, 1 vs 100, was downloaded a total of 3m times in its 13-week beta period.
“It’s clear that we’ve had an incredibly successful summer, and the Xbox Live community loves the innovative gaming experiences we deliver,” Xbox Live’s director of digitally distributed games Scott Austin stated
“We are the leader in digitally distributed games, have the best partners in the industry and work closely with them to offer the best in downloadable content and entertainment.”

Late last week, we reported that Italian site MondoXbox had spotted an ad for an Xbox 360 802.11n adapter in the Gears of War 2 Game of the Year Edition box. Prior to that, the device was reviewed by the FCC. Speaking to Joystiq, Microsoft has confirmed that there is indeed such an adapter in the works. Unfortunately, the confirmation was accompanied by few actual details. Other than the fact that the adapter will allow gamers to "seamlessly connect with their home network with the highest wireless 'N' technology," we don't know anything about when it will release or, more importantly, how much it will cost.
Microsoft did refer to the device as "another choice to consumers," which lends credence to the belief that it will be marketed alongside the current Wi-Fi adapter, as opposed to replacing it altogether. Microsoft stated that more details will be available "soon" and advised us all to "stay tuned."
