Three titles announced, plus plans for apps and Xbox Live integration
Microsoft has confirmed its plans to release downloadable apps and games for its new Zune HD device, but only a few titles have been announced, and they won't be available until November.
The Zune HD went on sale in the US yesterday, alongside new Zune software. The relevant section of the press release runs thus:
"Later this year, Zune plans to release free applications such as Twitter for Zune and Facebook for Zune, in addition to fun 3-D games such as Project Gotham Racing: Ferrari Edition, Vans Sk8: Pool Service and Audiosurf Tilt. Games can be added to Zune HD via Zune Marketplace over the Wi-Fi connection or when connected to the Zune PC software."
The announcement of Audiosurf is intriguing: the original PC game lets people play along with their own library of songs, so the Zune version will surely include a similar feature.
Microsoft's push for Zune gaming is confirmed by news that it's updating its XNA Game Studio 3.1 Platform to support the Zune HD, allowing independent developers to create games for the device that make use of its touchscreen and accelerometer.
However, it seems the company won't be quite as open as Apple has been with its App Store. Zune marketing manager Brian Seitz has told the Seattle Times that Microsoft is working with games firms "on a case-by case basis. It's not really come one, come all."

So were poring through the Zune HD's various manuals and documentation, like you do, and we noticed this little line in the A/V dock's quick start guide: An HDMI cable (included) and a high-definition TV are required for high-definition viewing. Zune HD and other touch-screen Zune players also work with the composite A/V cable (included). Now, that's pretty interesting, since, you know, there aren't any other touchscreen Zunes out there. We'd say that's either solid evidence the boys in Redmond are planning to give the Zune HD the family it's always wanted -- or it's just a huge mistake. Only your doctor knows for sure.

Well, here's something interesting. According to tipster Josh S, a perusal through the Zune Software source files will net you pictures of four as of yet unknown Zune HD palettes. From left to right, we've got pink, magenta, purple, and "atomic." We're still looking through the source code ourselves to confirm. It's not like early adopters wanted anything other than platinum and black anyway, right?

It wasn't exactly a surprise, given that Microsoft told us last month exactly when they would be available, but sure enough you can now get yourself a Zune HD with some funky wallpaper on the front and a fresh etching on the back. The artistic designs are just as interesting as the earlier ones applied to the dearly departed models, and as before you can get custom inscriptions added to the top, like the example above we created to mark the budding romance between our own Joshua Topolsky and his Zune. Best of all, custom designs and inscriptions are totally free -- if you don't mind paying MSRP, of course

A lot of people had differing emotions when reading the Zune HD launch announcement yesterday: joy that the system would indeed sport a selection of apps and games, all free; dismay that those apps would be developed almost exclusively by Microsoft. Today you can turn that frown upside down, sweetheart, as it seems that exclusivity won't last long. An update to the XNA Game Studio development environment has already been released, enabling coders to target the Zune HD. The new version, 3.1, adds libraries for handling the system's accelerometer and multitouch screen, both put to use by developer Elton Muuga to create a simple drawing app, shown in video form after the break. It makes lines on a screen with finger touches and, like a ridiculously expensive Etch A Sketch, erases with a shake. It's not much, but impressive given the thing's only been available for a day now, and while we're still unsure how apps like this will find their way into the Zune's app store, we're sure all will be answered soon enough.

Shortly after the announcement of the Limited Edition Modern Warfare 2 Xbox 360 bundle, we had a chance to grill Microsoft's Albert Penello, director of platform marketing for Xbox, about the bundle. While Pinello confirmed the bundle's absence of any additional accessories – no high-definition cables, no WiFi adapter – he also commented on the 250GB hard drive. When asked if Microsoft had any plans to sell the significantly embiggened hard drive separately, Pinello said, "I wouldn't say plans. Maybe. I hear this story every two years. It was the 20s, and then the 60s, and then the 120s." Not that you could afford it anyway.
So, Microsoft doesn't have "plans" per se, but Pinello pointed out that, historically, these things become available separately. Until then, if you want a massive 250GB of Xbox storage, your only avenue is purchasing the $399 Modern Warfare 2 bundle.

Microsoft's Zune HD, set to go on sale Tuesday, will not feature an open application store like its competitor the iPod Touch. It will come with some unique features, though, like an HD radio tuner, and with software that has been well-received by users. Those capabilities will determine whether the ZuneHD sells well — and whether Microsoft decides to keep selling its own music player, said Matt Rosoff, an analyst at Directions on Microsoft.'
The Zune marketing manager was quoted in the Seattle Times on whether the Zune would open up for 3rd-party apps, and he gave a response of such mind-numbing PR-speak that John Gruber of Daring Fireball was moved to provide this English translation: "No, because our mobile strategy is a convoluted mess

If you're one of the few Earthlings with a Zune HD sold ahead of its US street date... and still awake, consider yourself obsessive. And lucky: the Zune 4.0 software just popped and is ready to download for the newest must-have portable media player. Our full review is on the way, 'till then check our hands-on and official launch-day press release just beyond the read link.
P.S. Looks like older Zunes are getting a version 3.2 update -- screengrab after the break.
Update: The new Zune software is fully Windows 7 optimized as you'd expect. That means it supports Windows 7 Jump Lists (for quick access to your music controls and playlists from the Taskbar), Previews letting you glimpse and control media by hovering your mouse over the Zune button on the Taskbar, and Aero Snap auto-resizing of the Zune software window. Here's a quick overview of what else is new:
Quickplay menu: quick access from your Zune HD to your favorite media including those you most recently added or played
Smart DJ: Like Apple's Genius, Smart DJ creates like-minded music mixes. It also adds music from the Zune Marketplace if you have a Zune Pass.
Mini Player Mode: Keeps a mini version of the player on top of your PC apps
Download to own: For the first time you can download-to-own or rent full movies and TV shows in SD or HD formats.
Surprisingly, CNET says that Microsoft has killed the ability to "squirt" DRM-crippled music directly between Zune users. Not that it will be missed.

Streets of Fury, the finalist of the Microsoft's Dream-Build-Play 2008 contest is now available on Xbox Live Marketplace.
Created by two indie developers, the game beat 350 other registered entrants to impress the judges of the official-branded game comp.
According to the blurb, Streets of Fury takes place in a "Paris devastated by suburban gangs". The Army being on strike, the President calls for the best privateer brawlers of Los Angeles streets to restore order and security. That's our kind of mindless, violent storyline.
"We've been completely fond of the beat 'em up genre since early childhood and played most of its classic games. To create Streets of Fury, we took inspiration from games like Streets of Rage, Fatal Fury or also Guardian Heroes" said Cyrille Lagarigue, co-creator of the game.
"We're very excited to see our game released on the Xbox Live Arcade and to have succeeded in mixing some of the best gameplay mechanics from classic 2D fighting games into Streets of Fury," declared Jordi Asensio, the other creator.
The game features a coop mode and support for up to four players. Both a demo and the full game are available at the Indie Games section of the Xbox Live Arcade now.

In a March 2008 interview with GamersGlobal, renowned designer Peter Molyneux divulged few details on "Dimitri," an "experimental thing" which he claimed was given life by a mysterious discovery. "And then it moved from that experiment to a moment in time that happened six months ago when a discovery was made, and this discovery has been so exciting that it has lead to Lionhead focusing on it and sculpting a game around that," he said at the time. "I think that discovery is so significant ... This discovery has lead us to start a game and that game will be on the front cover of Nature magazines and Science magazines."
According to Microsoft Game Studios head Phil Spencer, the discovery was actually "the right platform for an ambitious software idea" -- namely Project Natal, Microsoft's forthcoming motion control system for the Xbox 360. "Peter [Molyneux] and I saw the first [Natal] prototype about 2 years ago," Spencer recently told Develop. "He focused on what people want to do in this environment, and that's where a project of Lionhead's, called Dimitri, become Milo – the team's previous idea took on a whole new lease of life with Natal."
Now that we've become acquainted with "Dimitri" in his new, boyish form, we can lay the old codeword to rest and attempt to discern the reality within Molyneux's enthusiastic words. Though we're undecided on Milo's future as a Popular Mechanics cover model, we're fairly confident he'll wind up on Game Informer sooner or later. Shall we file this under Molyknew or Molyno?

Microsoft's Shane Kim, Xbox vice president for strategy and business development, is to retire at the end of the year, according to reports.
Ahead of his departure, Phil Spencer, currently Xbox European general manager will be promoted to vice president, and a newly created chief operating officer position will be filled by current chief financial officer Dennis Durkin.
Durkin will take on operating roles, dealing with pricing SKU strategy and business development, including forming new content partnerships.
News of Kim's departure comes from an internal memo published by The Seattle Times.
In the memo, Xbox senior VP Don Mattrick stated the exec's most notable achievements during his 19 year tenure with the company, referring to him as "instrumental" in the evolution of Microsoft's Xbox business "from the early days of Flight Simulator and Golf to the launch of the original Xbox, to the successful launches for two of the biggest entertainment franchises in the industry - Halo and Gears of Wars.
"Shane's passion for this business and industry runs deep and he will be dearly missed. Having dedicated the last two decades to Microsoft, Shane is eager to make up for lost time with his family and friends," the memo continues.
Kim says he has no immediate plans for his next move. He will spend the next four months helping Durkin with the transition ahead of his departure.

While it doesn't carry the same cachet as "Election Day" or "Chinese Leftovers Day," Zune HD Day is still very much a real thing. With today's launch of Microsoft's pretty-cool-but-still-not-a-phone media player comes final confirmation that the Zune HD will support games. Buried in the device's launch press release is the following line: "Later this year, Zune plans to release ... fun 3-D games such as Project Gotham Racing: Ferrari Edition, Vans Sk8: Pool Service and Audiosurf Tilt."
Of course, three games does not a platform make and, while Apple is busy touting the availability of 21,178 games in the iPhone App Store, Microsoft is launching the Zune HD with a far less ... robust marketplace. Even at the launch of Apple's App Store, over a third of the 500 programs available were games; today, it's closer to half.
Unfortunately, the Zune HD isn't competing with the pre-App Store iPhone or iPod Touch, so when Zune marketing manager Brian Seitz tells the Seattle Times that it's "hard to say right now" if the "sometimes connected" Zune HD will be opened up to third-party app development, it's difficult to hide our disappointment. Game development on the Zune HD is happening on a "case-by-case" and not a "come one, come all" basis, Seitz says.
So, what he's saying is you shouldn't expect to see anywhere near 21k games (regardless of quality) and you can also write off seeing the Zune HD popping up on the list of IGF Mobile nominees next year. As a gaming platform, even a casual gaming platform, will this be enough to compete against the iPod Touch or even the PSP Go? We'll find out "in November" when these games are finally available.
