Microsoft will launch its Christmas marketing campaign in the UK tomorrow with a firm emphasis on communicating the non-gaming capabilities of the Xbox 360.
The platform holder has already begun its work with third parties, explained senior director for Northern Europe at the company's Entertainment & Devices division Neil Thompson, but there's much more to come.
"We have extensive above-the-line campaigns that have already kicked off, to be honest, with a lot of our third-party publishing partners," he told GamesIndustry.biz. You might have seen a lot of TV work we've already done around some great titles - The Beatles: Rock Band, and so on.
"But from October 2 we're launching our own TV work explaining to consumers the broader entertainment offerings we have on Xbox 360, which is going to centre on our music offerings, movie offerings - and then obviously the unique TV experience we've got in connection with Sky, and the Sky service we're bringing to Live.
"All of that is going to round out for us the broader entertainment platform that the 360 is, and we're working on some fantastic software titles from our end, such as Lips and Forza. Plus we've done a lot of work in the last few weeks, working with Activision on Modern Warfare 2, and other great titles that are coming out for gamers.
"So really it's an extension of what we were doing last year, with perhaps a little bit more emphasis around the broader entertainment offering, as well as all the great games that will be available."
The campaign follows an extensive television advertising spend from Sony in its efforts to put a similar message out to consumers about its new-to-market PlayStation 3 Slim - but Thompson was firm that Microsoft's campaign isn't a copycat ploy.
"In some ways I wish we were that agile," he smiled. "No, we're just focusing on what we think are our core strengths. We think gaming is a core strength of ours, we think the breadth of our entertainment offering is a real core strength. And Live, in many ways, is just our unique value proposition.
"We're very focused on what we think we're offering to consumers, rather than what anybody else thinks they're offering them."

Microsoft has announced the availability of a new retail bundle for its Xbox 360 Elite in the US in time for the Holiday season.
The Elite Holiday Bundle will sell for USD 299 and include two games - LEGO Batman from Traveller's Tales and Black Rock's Pure.
The pack will also include a wireless controller and headset, as well as a 120GB hard drive - but it won't include an HDMI cable, preferring instead the composite A/V version instead.
Meanwhile Microsoft has also released new colours for its Xbox 360 controllers, which are now available in the US in red, blue and pink.
The platform holder's USD 50 rebate on Elite consoles, announced earlier this month, ends on October 5.

Microsoft has issued a statement downplaying the Halo 3: ODST "Unreadable Disc" reports that surfaced last week.
"We are aware of a very small number of people who are reporting they can't play the game," the platform holder told Eurogamer.
"We are looking into it, but at this point it doesn't appear to be a widespread issue."
A 35-page thread reporting the issue on the Bungie forums has now spread to over 60 pages with members still frustrated at the lack of communication from either developer or publisher.
The disc-read error occurs on some Xbox 360s during the Halo 3: ODST's campaign, rendering the game unplayable from thereon out. Other games, including Halo 3, are reportedly affected as collateral, and there are even mentions of hardware problems following the error.
Bungie is busy gathering data from those affected.
Despite the problems, Halo 3: ODST went straight to number one in the UK chart yesterday after selling 64 per cent of its week one total within the first 24 hours.

Are older Zune models going the way of the brick? We've received a handful of tips pointing us to the official Zune forums, where reports are coming in that apparently a number of the non-Zune HD units haven't been able to sync with Zune 4.0 software. Although a few people have elaborated on some steps to take (hint: it involves a lot of downgrading and reinstallation of both firmware and Zune software), there doesn't seem to be a clear consensus on its effectiveness. Honestly, it's hard to tell from our end if this is really a widespread issue and we haven't seen it ourselves, so we're putting it to you, deer reader: has your Zune device forgotten how to sync with the mothership?
Is your Zune device out of sync with Zune software?
Yes, my older Zune is experiencing a failure to communicate
No, but now that you mention it, my Zune HD doesn't seem to sync
Everything's fine here, captain
I don't have a Zune, but I do have a predilection for pushing buttons

Two new Xbox-360-related bundles are arriving for the upcoming holidays. And while the Elite will continue going for $300, the Xbox 360 controller bundle balloons the peripheral to $60.
Predicted by Ars, the Xbox 360 Elite Holiday Bundle includes a 360 Elite, Lego Batman: The Videogame and Pure. It's available now for $299.
Meanwhile, for those just looking to score a controller and some games, the $60 Xbox 360 Wireless Controller Game Pack includes a wireless black controller and Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved, Lumines LIVE!, Bomberman LIVE! and Ms Pac-Man. We're feeling too lazy to look up the price of each title and convert from MS points, but given that a controller only runs about $35, this bundle sounds like a bit of an upsell if you're not going to play each and every title. Also, Jason Chen will just top your Geometry Wars scores, so don't even bother.

Microsoft showed off two more ways Project Natal could work with existing games at the Tokyo Game Show last week.
According to creative director Kudo Tsunoda, speaking during a demo presentation, Japanese firms such as Konami, Square Enix, Capcom and Namco Bandai are "all building games for project Natal". But to further illustrate the potential of the technology, Microsoft put together a special TGS demo featuring Beautiful Katamari.
"I think what this does really well is take a game that was super-hard to control, and make it super-easy and approachable," he said. "On 360 the controls in Katamari were really hard - it was hard to navigate around the world. Now, with Project Natal, it's very simple and easy to do. Anybody can get in and be able to play it right away. It makes it simple, fun and accessible while still keeping the depth and excitement this game has."
Eurogamer got to have a go and sure enough, the game was instinctively easy to play. You position your hands as if they're on top of a beach ball then move them as if rolling it around - left to go left, right to go right and so on. The game was responsive to our movements, with no lag between our gestures and the action on screen. It all felt fluid, natural and less fiddly than twiddling analogue sticks.
Next up was Space Invaders Extreme. To play the Natal version of this game, you stand in front of the screen with your arms out to the side and bent at the elbows. Stepping from side to side moves your ship left and right. You raise your arms to fire, keeping them bent. You look like C-3PO at a rave, having just discovered disco biscuits.
In practice, it's easier to control your ship by leaning from side to side rather than stepping. The game occasionally appeared to struggle to keep up with our firing motions, and twice had to be reset after it stopped responding altogether. But Space Invaders Natal-style was strangely good fun to play and apparently hilarious to watch, and overall it worked. Plus it's probably completely amazing if you've had disco biscuits for tea.
But is there any chance the Natal versions of these games will make it into the shops? Seems unlikely, as these were tech demos built specially for TGS. "We just wanted to make something Japanese consumers and publishers could identify with," said Tsunoda. Here's hoping someone sees the potential of Space Invaders Natal in time for our Christmas party, anyway.

Kudo Tsunoda of Microsoft Game Studios has said it is unlikely to be possible for developers to patch their existing games to make them compatible with Natal.
While Microsoft is able to engineer other publishers' titles to work with the hardware, Tsunoda told Destructoid, a significant amount of code has to be altered first.
Microsoft has already used several older games to showcase Natal in action - including Burnout Paradise at E3, and, at Tokyo Game Show, the Xbox Live Arcade title Space Invaders Extreme and Namco Bandai's Beautiful Katamari.
However in practice, said Tsunoda, it is more likely a publisher will have to re-release the game in its entirely in order for it to be Natal compatible.
The information comes on the back of Sony's announcement that a number of reworked games will be compatible with the PlayStation 3 motion controller. Some, such as Resident Evil 5: Director's Cut, will be new releases, but others, including LittleBigPlanet, PAIN and Flower, are expected to work following patching.

Game creators need the ‘core-market’ consoles to hit ‘PS2 sales’, says Miles Jacobson
The games industry will suffer more staff cuts and studio closures unless its ‘core-market’ consoles begin to reach PS2-levels.
That was the warning offered by Miles Jacobson, studio head at Sports Interactive.
“At the moment I don’t think the Xbox 360 or PS3 are completely mass-market devices,” said Jacobson. “The Xbox platform has sold better than before, but the PS3 has not at all reached the levels that the PS2 did.”

Live Sky TV viewing via Xbox 360 didn't make it into the most recent dashboard update, readers report page 17 of the network's most recent SkyMag indicates it will arrive around mid-October. Additional details flesh out what's available, while all Xbox Live Gold members (in the appropriate areas) will get access to the Sky Player similar to the PC implementation, you will need a Sky subscription with the appropriate channels to view sports and movie content. Look out for more updates at the skyplayer.com/xbox360 site, while those of us beyond the network's reach wonder whether we can expect other features like Twitter (you're following us, right?) Facebook and 1080p instant-on movie streaming to arrive at roughly the same time.

Hey, remember that totally wild, awesome looking "Atomic" Zune HD we spied evidence of in the source files a week or so ago? Well, we later saw an image or two of it, but now one's shown up in the flesh on ebay -- and for a starting bid of a mere 265 bones you might be able to snag it! This one's a 32GB model, and while we still don't know if it's going to be officially released or not, we get the feeling that it probably will. Regardless, we'd advise starting a bidding war anyway. Oh, and we're totally winning this one so hands off.

We've suffered our fair share of broken hearts at the hands of the Red Ring of Death -- now, the Xbox 360 is being used to mend our ailing blood-pumpers. A computer scientist at the University of Warwick in England recently did some sweet console modification to allow his 360 to calculate heart rhythms using a complex algorithm. Microsoft's console is capable of performing these calculations five times faster (and 10 times cheaper) than a lab computer, and has the added benefit of letting its users play Madden in between bursts of scientific study.
To sum up, the 360 is now being used to cure heart disease, and the PS3 is being used to cure cancer. Ball's in your court, Nintendo.

Speaking to Destructoid, Microsoft's Kudo Tsunoda had some bad news for gamers hoping to see old Xbox 360 game updated with Natal controls. The Natal team has been able to effectively implement motion controls in older titles -- like Beautiful Katamari and Space Invaders Extreme -- but Tsunoda intimated that it required large portions of code to be changed. According to Tsunoda, it's not something that developers could easily patch into older titles. In other words, if you want your favorite pre-Natal title to support motion control, you'll have to hope for a full-fledged re-release from the publisher.
That's definitely a blow for those hoping to enjoy some of their favorite games with motion control, especially considering Sony can patch motion control into older PS3 titles. Here's hoping Namco sees the light and releases Beautiful Natal-amari once Project Natal hits retail shelves.

Considering Peter Molyneux is now part and parcel of The Microsoft Corporation, it probably wouldn't surprise anyone if some form of Project Natal found it's way into Fable III and beyond.
"You know, Lionhead's been a real innovation studio for us," Microsoft's Phil Spencer told Joystick. "We have the release of Fable 2 episodic this week, where they're taking Fable 2 and breaking it up into chunks, allowing people to buy the content at their pace. Fable 2, I thought, was a great release, with the orbs they added with Live, adding new functionality to the franchise. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if Natal found its way into future iterations of Fable."
Stroking the dog? Stirring your porridge? Smashing the cr*p out of bandits? How would you like to see Natal implemented in Fable?

While penning our Zune HD review, we were initially quite baffled by our inability to do much of anything with it after installing Microsoft's newest firmware update. Our concern had been properly kiboshed by assurances from the company that we'd gotten a fluke unit... and by the properly working replacement we received to finish the review with. Now, however, it seems as if we weren't alone in our glass cage of emotion, with gaggles of irate Zune HD users emerging from the woodwork in order to express their disappointment online. Hop on past the break for a video of the issues we were having, and if you're seeing something eerily similar on your own device, drop a vote / comment below.

According to a rather lengthy thread on Bungie.net, several Halo 3: ODST players are having technical issues with the game. Users are reporting that disc read errors are occurring during the game, rendering it unplayable. Some believe the issue only affects older consoles, specifically those with older DVD drives. Anecdotally, our own David Hinkle encountered the DRE issue on a 2008 Elite. According to Hinkle, installing the game to the hard drive seemed to fix the problem. He later bought a second copy of the game and hasn't encountered the issue again. It's also worth noting that this issue seems to be isolated to the ODST campaign and Firefight mode. The Halo 3 multiplayer disc appears to be unaffected.
Bungie is looking into the problem, with a member of the test team asking forum users for specific information about problems that have been encountered. For those out there with a copy of ODST, let your voice be heard in the poll below.

Maximum 2GB file size is no longer a legislative restriction, but a technical one
The ambiguity surrounding size limits for XBLA games is over.
Developers are allowed to create titles weighing as much as 2GB for Microsoft’s online game service.
Since the Nov 2004 launch of the XBLA service, the size limit of its games has fluctuated erratically.
The limit started out at 50MB, but in January 2007 that had increased to 250MB and – if given consent by Microsoft – as much as 450MB.
But in May the next year, the XBLA size capacity was announced to have reached 350MB, throwing into doubt whether Microsoft was still approving XBLA games as big as 450MB.
That confusion only escalated during the following months. Since May 2008, Microsoft’s Live Arcade service has seen numerous games weighing in at 700MB, 1GB and – as with C&C 3 Commander's Challenge Pack – 2GB.
Microsoft's Scott Austin has, finally, put a pin on the size limitation.
Speaking to IGN, Microsoft’s director of digital games explained that legislative restrictions on XBLA game sizes no longer exist.
However, there is a technical limitation on XBLA game sizes – 2GB – which cannot be surpassed. And thus, 2GB is the final, universal, and only size limit on XBLA titles.
