As part of its Xbox 360 pre-launch amble, Microsoft touted its brand new console's fancy security measures, designed to keep out naughty hackers who might try and use the machine to blow up the world in a massive game of nuclear chess. Which happens all the time - we've seen it on the telly.
Anyway, some enterprising young scamp on the Gaming-Age forums has made a discovery which might show the first cracks in the Xbox 360's armour, signalling a tiny blossoming bud of hope for the console's homebrew scene.
Poster Rhindle was faffing about with the 360's Media Center Extender interface when he noticed that a couple of programmes were showing up under the 'More Programs' tab - and these were resident on his PC, shared magically via its Media Center Package.
Let's go over to Mister Rhindle himself at this point: "It's apparently very easy to integrate Windows applications into the MCE "More Programs" tab. All you have to do is build a link in a format specified by Microsoft and do some minor optimization, and the app will run in MCE.
"So I downloaded a couple of apps and installed them on MCE, switched over to the 360, and lo and behold, most of them run perfectly. I was able to run apps with modified browsers to pull down news stories, stock quotes, sports scores etc., as well as several Internet Radio clients."
He also apparently managed to get a couple of shareware games showing up and streaming on the 360's Media Center Extender but they crashed after a couple of seconds of running. Curse and darnation.
Quite what this find means in the grander scale of things is currently unknown, but it's a fair bet that there's a few eager beavers snorkelling in the depths of the Xbox 360 as we write, trying to work out how they can exploit this latest discovery for their own nefarious (and probably not so nefarious) ends.

A spokesperson for Virgin Megastores has slammed rumours that the retailer will force consumers who have pre-ordered an Xbox 360 to purchase a load of games before they can take their console home.
Speaking to Eurogamer, the spokesperson dismissed the rumours as "simply not true," telling us: "Virgin Megastores customers are not obliged to purchase games bundles."
The rumours stemmed from a report on Gamestyle.net which claimed that pre-ordering customers had been told: "If you still wish to collect your console on launch, you will have to purchase three games with the console bundle."
According to reports from the likes of Oregon's Channel 6 News, US retailer Best Buy pulled a similar trick over in the States - and as a result, shop staff were forced to turn little kiddies away because they hadn't saved up enough cash to buy the bundle. Best Buy has since said that anyone who felt forced into buying extra products can return them.
But Virgin Megastores won't be engaging in any such shenanigans, and that's official. However, they will be rewarding anyone who buys an Xbox 360 and two games with six vouchers, each worth £5 off an Xbox 360 game. The vouches will be valid between January and June. Also, if you buy three games, you get ten vouchers, valid until the end of October. Manners.

Though several European gamers trying to get an Xbox 360 when the console launches in the region think they have a better chance of getting struck by lightning, they're quite wrong. In fact, they have twice as good a chance of getting their hands on the next-generation console when it launches December 2 as they do getting struck by the hand of Zeus (1 in approximately 600,000).
Talking to a German newspaper reporter, vice president of Microsoft Europe's Home and Entertainment Division Chris Lewis gave some hope to gamers in the region. Lewis said that analysts' predictions of 300,000 Xbox 360s available for the European launch "were not far removed from reality," according to Reuters. Lewis also thinks that the console has a strong possibility of selling out in Europe.
Microsoft has a heady chore ahead of them. The first-ever "simultaneous" global launch will mean that the company must replenish depleted stocks in North America, and prepare a regional launch in Europe on December 2 and Japan on December 10.
The company expects to have a steady flow of systems into market on a weekly basis to match the company's lofty projections.
Peter Moore, Microsoft corporate vice president of worldwide marketing and publishing, recently told GameSpot that the company expects to ship 2.5 to 3 million units worldwide in the console's first 90 days, and 10 million by the end of 2006.

Analysts' allocation predictions "not far removed from reality", says Lewis
Microsoft executive Chris Lewis has suggested that analysts' estimates of a launch day allocation of 300,000 Xbox 360 units for European territories are in the right ball park.
Speaking to German weekly Euro am Sonntag, Lewis said that the estimates "were not far removed from reality." He added that there was a possibility the Xbox 360 would sell out at launch in Europe, just as it in the US since the console launched there on November 22.
In the States, Xbox 360 "premium bundles" - which come with a hard drive included - are already selling for upwards of USD 900 on eBay, despite the fact that the machine carries an RRP of USD 399.
In an interview with GameSpot recently, Xbox executive Peter Moore predicted sales of between 2.5 million and 3 million Xbox 360 units worldwide in the three months following launch - and forecast that the figure would stand at 10 million by the end of 2006.
The Xbox 360 will launch in Europe on Friday December 2, priced at GBP 209 for the "core" system or GBP 279 for the hard drive-bundled machine.

November 28th, 2005, 20:22 Posted By: wraggster
As reports of Xbox 360 units crashing or freezing continue to emerge from North America, some console owners are claiming to have found the cause of the problem - and its solution.
Apparently many Xbox 360 owners are attempting to hide the console's large power supply unit out of sight, and placing it in areas where there is not enough ventilation as a result.
Just as when a PC crashes if it gets too hot and there's a risk of fire, the Xbox 360's PSU is said to then shut down - which means console owners should be leaving plenty of space around the power pack so that air can circulate and the two built-in fans can perform properly.
One Xbox 360 owner found a particularly inventive solution to the problem - as detailed on the GameSpot forum.
The poster, "goldeneyemaster", claims his Xbox 360 was crashing "like once every 20 minutes," so he suspended it in the air with a bit of string - which solved the problem. He also found that perching the PSU on a box worked just as well: "I left the console on for seven hours without crashing (I finally decided to turn it off)."
Microsoft declined to comment on whether the PSU is causing the crashes, with a spokesperson simply telling our sister site Eurogamer: "Because Xbox 360 has three powerful processing cores, customers may notice that it runs a bit warmer than other game consoles, but this heat output is well within the acceptable and safe range for a CE device of this type and has passed all applicable safety certifications.
"There is no systemic issue with Xbox 360. Each incident is unique and these customer enquiries are being handled on a case-by-case basis."

The Xbox-Linux team have got to work on trying to port Linux to the xbox 360, in a project named 'free 60'. The Free60 Project aims to port open source operating systems like GNU/Linux and Darwin to the Microsoft Xbox 360 gaming console. Here is some interesting documentation already from their website...
- The flash is encrypted with a per-box key
- The key is stored inside the CPU
- The boot ROM is stored inside the CPU
- Also inside the CPU is a hypervisor that verifies the running state of the kernel, making sure there is no modification (RAM checksums), else the Xbox360 panics and blows up!
- The CPU contains RAM inside of it to store the checksums
- All interrupt/exception handling is done by the hypervisor
- All code runs in kernel mode
- The emulator for first generation games can be updated via an official Microsoft download burned to CD by the user, though the CDs' content will be encrypted and signed with public key cryptography.
The Xbox 360's Hard Disk appears to connect to the Xbox 360 via 7-pin SATA, internally the drive connects to the external connector through standard SATA data and power connectors. This should be of some help.

November 26th, 2005, 09:33 Posted By: wraggster
Although it had been confirmed in September that the Xbox 360 would be region locked for both games and DVDs, it now appears that may be only partially true. According to CVG, “word from Japan says that a handful of American Xbox 360 titles do not have a region lock, and work fine on a Japanese region console.” These titles included Call of Duty 2, Condemned, Gun, and Tony Hawk: American Wasteland.
This could be in response to the later news that Sony might allow the PS3 to be region free, like they’ve done with the PSP. Could the next generation of systems be completely free of region encoding? Probably not, CVG warns the region locking decision for 360 titles is probably being left up to publishers. So come on publishers, lets forget about that whole, silly, region thing alright?

November 25th, 2005, 23:22 Posted By: wraggster
As US consumers continue to snap up Xbox 360s following the console's launch on November 22, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates has suggested that the ultimate victor in the console wars won't be decided until 2007.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Gates claimed that the software giant's second attempt at capturing the videogame console market is spearheaded by "the hottest product we've ever had."
The original Xbox console, which launched after Sony's PlayStation 2, failed to gain the market dominance Microsoft had hoped for - picking up just 18 per cent of the console market. Although considerable investment in the console did result in marked increases in the installed customer base, the Xbox has consistently remained in Sony's shadow.
Microsoft's ambitious tri-continent launch strategy - which will see the Xbox 360 hit Europe on December 2 and Japan on December 10 - will certainly give Microsoft a head start on its rivals this time around, but according to Gates, it hasn't been an easy process.
"For the last six months, we've been on the edge of our seats. I hope I don't get an e-mail saying 'Gosh, processor yields are too low, or this plastic factory burned down in Malaysia, so we'll have boxes but no controllers.'"
The US launch has been generally considered a success, and recent reports of Xbox 360 consoles overheating have been played down by the company. New details suggest that the cause is nothing more serious than a safety measure that protects the console by shutting down if the owner fails to allow proper ventilation for the hefty power pack.
Whilst both Sony and Nintendo intend to release their own next generation machines at some point in 2006, the Microsoft boss has suggested that it will still take time to decide who wins the latest console war. Interestingly, Gates' comments hint at a two-way race, ignoring the Nintendo Revolution and focusing on the battle for market dominance between Microsoft and Sony.
"We see ourselves having a higher share. We're not going to name some magic number but we're out to give the best gaming experience. By the end of 2007, you'll have kind of a sense of how much did Microsoft increase its market share: dramatically, not so dramatically, did Sony mess up, what happened?"
No dates have been announced for the launch of either the PS3 or the Revolution, and Microsoft's head start on the market for the next wave of gaming hardware has never been in dispute. What remains to be seen is whether or not the European and Japanese launches will be equally as successful as the US debut, and how well the machine performs in terms of its all-important software support once rival consoles hit market next year.

Hey guys it's been a while :-)
I am still waiting to buy my 360 it's gonna be sweet can't wait. Anyways I was thinking that when the new system gets cracked somone needs to port PCSX2 the PS2 emulator to the 360.
With the 360's power it would run great plus you could upsample the resolution to 720P and have full scene antialiasing.
Picture GT4 without jaggies or killzone without slowdowns and lag. Plus how much better the games would handle on the 360's controller
chew on that. Peice out guys :-)

Ever since the insanity of the 2000 PlayStation 2 launch and reports of online auctions for the desired system reaching into the thousands of dollars, new system launches have become a big event for entrepreneurial capitalists as much as gamers.
The Xbox 360 launch is no exception, with widespread reports of inevitable launch day shortages leading up to the big day. While a fair number of clearly bogus or unrealistic listings are already up on eBay (one auction started at $100,000 with a Buy it Now price of $150,000 and still asked $20 for shipping and handling), more legit auctions still reached pretty lofty heights.
A look at the soon-ending auctions this morning showed premium Xbox 360s generally closing at $600-$700, with core systems going for about $500. There were some aberrations; one auction for an Xbox 360 premium system on its own reached $1,750, while a core system auction reached as high as $790.
Clearly the demand for 360s is huge, so much so that even Microsoft's competition isn't immune to the hype surrounding the system launch. On Monday, one Sony executive who wished to remain anonymous paid $3,000 for a premium Xbox 360 system on eBay. The auction was for one of the first 10 Xbox 360 North American systems, originally given away at E3 as part of a contest sponsored by Mountain Dew. The exec's $3,000 Buy it Now bid netted him the system, a certificate of authenticity, a copy of Kameo: Elements of Power, a limited edition E3 Xbox 360 faceplate, and perhaps many months of having to live down comments from his teasing co-workers.
However, as great as the demand is, the supply of systems on eBay is almost as staggering. There are thousands of listings for the unit on the auction site, many of which are going without bids due to high reserves or starting prices. But don't rush to mortgage the house just yet. As these machines fail to sell and are reoffered at lower prices, as launch day insanity becomes a fading memory, and as future shipments of the system reach retail, the prices are all but certain to come down.

November 23rd, 2005, 22:13 Posted By: wraggster
When the Xbox 360 was first announced, its high-specs lead many to wonder not if they'll be able to find an Xbox 360 for sale, but whether they can afford its hefty $300-$400 price tag. Now that the console has launched, it's obvious that the hundreds of dollars it costs for the system isn't the hurdle, it's merely finding one for sale that's the problem.
The many gamers who failed in their attempt to get an Xbox 360 yesterday have likely told everyone they know about their disappointments. Friends, family, and strangers have heard the gripes because of nationwide shortages of the item, deemed to be one of the hot gifts this holiday season.
Turns out those tales of sadness have reached the ears of those all the way at the top--top of Microsoft at least.
In response to the retail drought of Xbox 360s across the country, Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's Entertainment & Devices division told GameSpot, "We are well aware that many gamers are disappointed to have not gotten their Xbox 360 on day one. We are working around the clock to manufacture as many Xbox 360s as we can and are replenishing our retail channel week after week."
Peter Moore, Microsoft's corporate vice president of worldwide marketing and publishing, had similar words on the subject. "Our goal is to replenish inventory in the channel every week," he said earlier this week during an interview with GameSpot at the console's launch event, Zero Hour. "So lots of Xbox 360s are flowing in every single week. It's not like we're shipping and then going dry for two or three weeks."
Though the North American launch has come and gone, other regions have yet to enter the next-generation. Europe launches in just over a week, and Japan will follow a week after that. The push to ensure successful launches in all three regions further compounds constrains on adequate supply.
Moore recommends that gamers check back with local retails every week. Those who can't wait, can always resort to more nefarious or exuberant methods of getting their hands on an Xbox 360.

Microsoft corporate vice president Peter Moore has given the first firm indications of the company's sales ambitions for the Xbox 360 over the coming year, which see ten million consoles being shipped by the end of 2006.
Moore outlined the company's targets in an interview with US website GameSpot at the Zero Hour launch event for the Xbox 360, which was held this week in an airplane hangar in Palmdale, California.
"In the first 90 days, I believe we'll be somewhere between two and a half and three million units worldwide," he said, echoing projections made by Xbox division CFO Bryan Lee at an investment conference earlier this month.
"Perhaps equally importantly," he continued, "by the end of the calendar year [2006], I think we'll be at 10 million units worldwide."
That figure is important not only because it gives a clear indication of how quickly Microsoft expects to build up its installed base, but also because Moore himself attached a special importance to it when he spoke to the ELSPA Games Summit earlier this year - telling the audience that he believed that the first console to hit the 10m mark would have a significant advantage in the next-gen battle.
Xbox 360 will follow up on its sell-out US launch with a European launch next Friday, December 2nd.

In the midst of an ambitious and unique tri-continent hardware launch, Microsoft has confirmed the pricing and dates for the arrival of its next generation Xbox 360 console in Australia.
Despite being one of the most successful territories for Microsoft, Australia will not be receiving the next generation games console until March 2nd, 2006. However, given the early reports of a widespread lack of retail units in the US where the console first hit stores yesterday, it is likely that the delay will aid the Australian launch in terms of both hardware stocks and available software titles.
The pricing structure has been confirmed as AUD 649.95 (EURO 407) for the premium system, including hard-drive, wireless controller and additional accessories, or AUD 499.95 (EURO 313) for the core system minus hard drive and with a wired controller. Peripheral pricing was also confirmed for the wireless controller at AUD 79.95 (EURO 50), the 20Gb hard drive and wireless networking adaptor for AUD 169.95 (EURO 106) each and the 64MB memory unit will be available for AUD 49.95 (EURO 31).
In terms of the all-important software line-up, no firm details have been released, though given the delay between launches, it is likely that Australian gamers will benefit from a much wider selection of both first and third party software in March. Microsoft has stated that some 200 games are currently in development for the system, 18 of which were on the shelves from day one of the US launch on November 22nd.
The first of the forthcoming next generation consoles will be released in Europe on December 2nd, following a week later on December 10th in Japan. Early reports from the US launch suggest that numerous retailers have completely exhausted their initial stock, as fans queued for almost 28 hours to secure the new machine.

BusinessWeek has taken a look at the insides of the XBox 360 and with the a little help from market researcher iSuppli determined that Microsoft is continuing its tradition to taking a big loss on the console in hopes of making a profit on games. From the article: "An up-close look at the components and other materials used in the high-end version of the Xbox 360, which contains a hard drive, found that the materials inside the unit cost Microsoft $470 before assembly. The console sells at retail for $399, meaning a loss of $71 per unit -- and that is just the start. Other items packaged with the console -- including the power supply, cables, and controllers -- add another $55 to Microsoft's cost, pushing the loss per unit to $126.
