As the Xbox 360 finally goes on sale across North America, Microsoft chairman and co-founder Bill Gates has reaffirmed Microsoft's continuing commitment to console gaming.
Speaking in an interview with Reuters, Gates said this is just the beginning of a new era - and that even if the 360 doesn't take the market lead this time round, MS will continue to develop console hardware.
"We'll play again. We learned a lot in the first round," Gates said.
"We've got a chance not just to have higher market share, but also to grow the size of this market substantially."
Gates went on to say that he was confident the Xbox 360 was a better machine than its rivals, telling Reuters: "In terms of how we've balanced technology in the machine, we feel certain we've done a better job than Sony."
"You won't really know that until a year from now, when people are talking about how the games on our machines compared to the games on Sony's machines."
Gates declined to comment on which software title will prove to be the Xbox 360's 'killer app', just as Halo was for the original Xbox: "I wouldn't have picked right last time if you had asked me that question, so I won't pick this time," he stated.
The Xbox 360 officially launched in North America at midnight last night, with stores across the country opening their doors specially for the occasion and many shoppers queueing around the block.
One man went to even greater extremes - holding up an Electronics Boutique store in Stafford, Virginia at gunpoint and making off with two Xbox 360s. No one was harmed during the incident and the thief was apprehended shortly afterwards.
The console is already selling well on auction site eBay - hard drive bundled machines, which retail for USD 399.99 in the shops, were going for upwards of USD 800 at the time of writing.
Microsoft celebrated the launch with a two-day party in the Mojave Desert, titled "Zero Hour". The invite-only event gave attendees the chance to try out games from the Xbox 360 launch line-up as well as titles due out next year.
The Xbox 360 will launch in Europe next, on December 2. The console will then hit Japan on December 10.

Joystiq report The original xbox contained a readable/writable TSOP chip which means that in order to mod the system you didn't even need to install a modchip. Just flash BIOS code directly to the TSOP. What's the point? You don't care about the original Xbox? Here it is then: The Xbox 360 has a TSOP chip as well.

We're already having a very nerdy, hands-on day here so we might as well continue. Smarter people than I will determine if this can be exploited. The Soft Life writes, Does the existence of a TSOP on the Xbox360's motherboard mean the same LDT security attack will be available? Probably not. But it seems to at least be an potential opening.

When you're travelling home this evening in the blistering cold, spare a thought for those poor American chaps camped outside stores across their fine nation, who in just a few short hours will be playing Perfect Dark Zero from the comfort of their extra-large and extra-comfy sofas.
Tonight is the night Microsoft unleashes the Xbox 360 on North America, and the company predicts "midnight madness" at the 4,500 stores opening at midnight, where the lucky few who preordered early enough can collect their sexy white console and scuttle off home to play on the 18 launch titles. Stunners like Kameo: Elements of Power, Project Gotham Racing 3 and the almighty Perfect Dark Zero all managed to dive head-first through the infamous "launch window" and will be available to purchase from day 1.
"The debut of Xbox 360 marks one of the biggest consumer launches in Microsoft's history," said Robbie Bach, president of the Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft. "With its sheer power, portfolio of graphically stunning games, rich online capabilities, and features for enjoying music, movies and photos, Xbox 360 delivers integrated digital gaming and entertainment experiences that simply can't be matched."
To celebrate the launch of its new console, Microsoft has thrown a party in the middle of California's Mojave Desert, where over 3,500 gamers are currently enjoying a spot of high-definition bliss.
Xbox 360 hits Europe in just two weeks time on December 2. So not too long to wait.

News From Lik Sang
It's that time of year again! Ahh, the Holiday season rush, so lovely. Here at Lik Sang, that's usually synonymous with late night overtime and working twice as fast as usual without sacrificing on quality (as stated by our operations manager). That's what it takes though if you want to be listed on the "official partners list" of Santa's corporate web site (and you should see the flowerish "thank you" message to Lik Sang which Santa posted on his private blog!). Yes, our warehouse is approved as one of the top performing and most productive genuine Santa centers on the planet and once again we're prepared to do our best to live up to the trust you put in us for another great holiday season.
In order to ease up your shopping time at Lik Sang, we've compiled these Christmas Buyers Guides as a series to help you out saving time and cutting lines when handling your Christmas list for relatives, family members and friends (not to forget yourself, it being time to get that expensive gear you've been eyeing for months, now that your end-of-year bonus is coming up, either from work or grandma). Whether you're preparing well ahead of time to avoid a stressful break down, or joining us late in the middle of your last minute race, the round-up hereunder is sure to save you precious time by pointing you straight to the good stuff. This particular exhaustive guide covers all the cool gear for Xbox, while the other three articles focus on different systems:
Essential Peripherals for Xbox freaks
No matter which type of gamer you are, we've got the goods. Lik Sang carries the most expansive and exhaustive range of Xbox peripherals, including some sexy exclusive pieces you won't see anywhere else. In that spirit, here we short-listed the most essential accessories a serious Xbox player needs for the ultimate home entertainment experience. Starting with the guy who can't get enough sweet, sweet eye candy, and just acquired a HDTV or any TV allowing component input, high-definition cable options are a must. Microsoft's AV Pack and the third-party component cable are regular hot sellers here, and there's a good reason why - they're great! The improvement in picture quality is immediate with these leads.
For those who like to play with game saves, tricking and cheating around, the Mega X-Key is just the tool they need. Holding 32mb, four times that of a standard memory card, it also comes pre-loaded with many saves, works with all Xbox consoles worldwide, and simply plugs into a PC's USB port for transferring and downloading of new saves. Levels, cars, weapons, lives and other cheats are hidden away inside the games they play, and the Mega X-Key brings them all out!
For the gamer that wants to play it their way, the Dreambox lets them plug their beloved PlayStation and PlayStation 2 controllers into the Xbox, and do it all without sacrificing vibration and memory card support. If on the other hand they only let go of their Xbox controller to go to the bathroom, and even then only because the thing is tethered to the actual Xbox, why would they want to play PC games with anything else? The SmartJoy-X lets them plug their Xbox pad right into their computer, and free downloadable drivers mean it'll work on Windows NT/2000, ME, XP, Mac OS X and even Linux! At just US$ 9.90 too, talk about a great stocking stuffer!
If you see titles in their collection like Halo, Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six, James Bond, Unreal, Medal of Honor, or any other first person shooter for that matter, they could really take their games to the next level with SmartJoy FRAG. This revolutionary adapter lets them plug a keyboard and mouse into the Xbox, something that's unanimously agreed upon as the best way to play shooters, proving far faster and more accurate than a controller. All buttons (including the Mouse's Scroll-Wheel) are supported, and advanced features such as Deadzone and Mouse Control Inversion let them tweak the controls to their liking. There's a built in memory card and Xbox Live headset slot, and it works with every Xbox game, on every Xbox console. At the new low price of US$ 19.90, the SmartJoy FRAG will be the hottest selling adapter this Christmas.
What SmartJoy FRAG is to first person shooters, Arcade Sticks are to fighting games; the only way for the serious gamer to play. We have three choices for the Xbox, starting at only US$ 34.90 with the X-Fighting Stick. Converted from Sega's original Japanese Virtua Sticks, one of the best ever made, it features turbo, slow motion, auto fire for each independent button, and like each of the three sticks we're looking at here, Micro Switch technology for the best speed, reliability, and durability money can buy.
Next up is the Fighting Stick Ex from Hori, a name synonymous with quality in Japan. Packing a memory card slot at the back, this licensed arcade stick looks great next to the console, and is built tough with a real arcade button layout. Beyond that, we present the massive Street Fighter Anniversary Arcade Stick, made of actual arcade cabinet components, housed in real wood and press board, weighing in at a mighty total of 3.3kg (7.3 lbs). Topped off with a high-quality Street Fighter graphic-wrap, arcade sticks don't get any better than this, and the cherry on the top is it'll even work on a PS2 also. If you still can't choose, we've compiled the reference Arcade Sticks Comparison Chart to ease up the process for you.
Transition to Xbox 360 - The clock is ticking
While the western world is just a few weeks off the Xbox 360 launch, we've received regular enquiries from customers asking us when we'll start taking preorders on this bad boy. Hardcore gamers have learnt Lik Sang is always the first to stock next gen systems, but for the first time the Xbox 360 will prove this belief wrong because of the simple truth; it comes out in Japan last, on December 10th. We won't be first and we don't want to confuse consumers by letting you believe we could be.
Import Gamers who like it hardcore and want their Japanese games played on a Japanese system though, don't worry about a thing as we'll be stocking Xbox 360 Japanese systems from launch day, as well as all Japanese launch titles exclusive to the land of the rising sun. All generic accessories, innovative gear and specialty peripherals to be released here in Asia - whether they come from China, Korea, Japan or Mongolia - will be stocked and sold here as fast as they are assembled together.
The full list of Japanese titles we're taking pre-orders for can be found right here, and at the time of writing, this includes Tetris The Grand Master Ace, Every Party, Shin Sangoku Musou 4 Special, Dead or Alive 4, Fifa 06 Road Two Fifa World Cup, Wrestle Kingdom, eM -eNCHANT arM-, Perfect Dark Zero, Need for Speed Most Wanted, and Ridge Racer .
Special Gaming DVDs
We've also got high quality DVD productions focusing on the gaming lifestyle and events that will please most hardcore players out there, whichever system or platform they prefer. Tokyo Access, the official Tokyo Game Show DVD, and E3 Access, a four disc set boasting 13 hours of coverage, each deliver all the info they crave for the next gen consoles, right down to the press conferences and keynotes speeches. Showcasing all games for the next six months through high resolution movies and exclusive in-game video presentations with the developers, both items are must-have pieces in a gamer's DVD collection.

News from Lik Sang
The Lik Sang Tech Team took some quality time over the last couples of weeks in order to deliver to you, fighting gaming fanatics, the ultimate comparison chart to rely on when considering the purchase of a high-quality Arcade Stick for your home system. We browse through the most refined selection of gear for PlayStation 2 and Xbox, and judge each of them based on various key criteria: Weight, Dimensions, Stick Type, Type of Switch, Type of Buttons, Number of Action Buttons, Size of Buttons, Reactivity of Buttons, bonus features such as Auto-Fire or programmable combos, and, finally, cross-compatibility with other platforms using Smartjoy adapters - we got it all covered.
The Arcade Sticks Comparison Chart is coming in a completely flexible design allowing you to choose on which points you want to compare the Sticks as well as which Sticks you are willing to compare. Take a look at the screenshot below to give you a rough idea, then hurry up to the Arcade Sticks Comparison Chart to check the real thing!
Our Top 3 Contenders
After long arguments in the gaming room, we ended up selecting three Arcade Sticks as our favorite all-around choices. Our top 3, in no particular order, stars Hori's Real Arcade Pro Stick, NubyTech's Street Fighter 15th Anniversary Arcade Stick and Sega's re-born Virtua Stick from the Saturn. The Street Fighter Stick is currently on backorder, the next delivery of it is expected by early December. Both the Virtua Stick and the Real Arcade Pro are in stock and shipping within 24 hours
All these three are massive heavyweight champions and have enough power to please the crowds, from the first-time Stick buyer to the most demanding Street Fighter specialist, with thousands of tournament and competition hours behind him. It's high quality gear we are talking about here, and selecting a clear-cut winner is a tough job. As a matter of fact, the core features being packed in each of these bad boys, the slight style variations are more a question of personal taste really. Where the Hori Real Arcade Stick Pro seems to be the favorite choice for Japanese style lovers (ball stick and sanwa type buttons), the Street Fighter Anniversary Stick is for sure a stylish option when you prefer American style control (HAPPS buttons and bat stick). Then, in the middle, Sega loyalists will just go for the Virtua Stick, also a Japanese style peripheral, with its own legend behind him: the Virtua Stick appeared first on Saturn 10 years ago, made of real parts from Sega's arcade cabinets, then inspired the shape of the well-known Dreamcast Arcade Stick (known as Agetek Stick in the USA), before finally coming back to the PlayStation 2 and to Computers earlier this year. Long time followers will not bother about other options and will not hesitate getting back the same old feeling which they already loved in the nineties.

November 19th, 2005, 01:21 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft VP Peter Moore has made scathing comments about the "conspiracy theories" over the potential shortage of Xbox 360 consoles on the impending launch day, saying that the company is trying to supply as many units as possible.
Speaking to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Moore - one of the key architects behind the new platform and its global launch - gave short shrift to the concept floated by some commentators that the launch shortages are being manufactured to make demand for the console appear higher.
"I've seen all of the conspiracy theories," he said. "Somewhere in Roswell, New Mexico, we have a hangar where were stockpiling it, creating false shortages. No.... It's ridiculous. We are trying to get as many units to retail as we possibly can."
However, Moore admitted that many consumers will probably be disappointed on the launch date, not least because some retailers have overestimated their allocation of consoles and taken preorders for too many units.
While the notion that Microsoft is deliberately manufacturing the shortage of consoles has become surprisingly widespread, a rather less interesting but more truthful explanation lies in the firm's decision to launch the system worldwide within the space of a few weeks - a first for the console industry.
This strategy, while it has proven popular with publishers and consumers alike, means that the number of units which will be shipped in each territory is severely restricted. Despite this, Microsoft's approach is almost certainly the right one - as Sony, who delayed the launch of the PSP in Europe by nine months after the Japanese launch due to supply issues and were faced with a massive volume of importing of the device as a result, can probably attest.
"When the dust settles, it will be proven to be the right thing," Moore told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer regarding the global launch, "and it will become the default way that you launch a videogame console in our industry."

Via Gamasutra, commentary from Peter Moore in the Seattle-PI about the furiously swirling Xbox 360 shortage rumours. From the article: "Is Microsoft purposefully holding back on shipments, trying to create an artificial appearance of extraordinary demand? Xbox executive Peter Moore says no -- pointing instead to the unprecedented scope of the launch. Microsoft, seeking to solidify its place in the living room and challenge Sony's dominant PlayStation franchise, is breaking from tradition by releasing its new machine in North America, Europe and Japan in rapid succession, over a span of three weeks.

Gamers are a passionate bunch. The term "must-have system" rings truer to those who game more than that of any other techie group. Specialty retailer GameStop knows that launch consoles can't get into the hands of hardcore fans soon enough, so it's holding special business hours for the launch of the Xbox 360.
More than 1,600 GameStop outlets will be open at 12:01 a.m. on November 22 to celebrate the launch of the first next-generation systems. Gamers packing up Mountain Dew and beef jerky in preparation of camping out to be the first on the block with one of the systems better have confirmation that their preorders have been filled.
Says GameStop, "Due to exceptional demand, Xbox 360 hardware systems will only be available for purchase to customers who have received confirmation of delivery by GameStop."
Those interested in attending the launch event should call their local GameStop to find out if it is participating.
Owners of Xbox 360s who are also members of the GameFly rental service will be happy to know that the company will have every available Xbox 360 game in its library for the console's launch.
Among the games that are currently in the system are Call of Duty 2, Gun, and Kameo: Elements of Power. GameFly has also released a list of the most requested Xbox 360 games so far, and if it has something to do with shooting, it's near the top of the list. All three of the console's first-person shooters--Call of Duty 2, Perfect Dark Zero, and Quake 4--top the list, followed by Gun. The list is in order as follows:
Title / Publisher
Call of Duty 2 / Activision
Perfect Dark Zero / Microsoft Game Studios
Quake 4 / Activision
Gun / Activision
Need for Speed Most Wanted / Electronic Arts
Dead or Alive 4 / Tecmo
Condemned: Criminal Origins / Sega
Project Gotham Racing 3 / Microsoft
Madden NFL 06 / Electronic Arts
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion / 2K Games

Twelve. That’s the current number of backwards compatible titles from the original Xbox system that will work on the new Japanese 360. Compared to the US’s 200+ number of backward compatible games, this figure is measly at best. Granted, none of the original Xbox games ever really sold well in the Land of the Geishas, but BC was sure to be enticing to some.
Microsoft has stated that the BC list can and will be revised regularly as they add backwards compatibility for more games. Here’s hoping they do for gamers’ sake.

In an interview with Reuters, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada disclosed that his company is considering releasing new installments of its Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest role-playing series on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. "We will decide by E3 in May [2006] as to whether to release them on both the PS3 and Xbox, or just one platform," Wada told Reuters.
For the most part, both Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest have been exclusive to a single platform. Both series made their debut on Nintendo's NES in the 1980s, and they continued to be hits on the SNES. However, Square defected to Sony Computer Entertainment's camp in the late 1990s, and the primary Final Fantasy series became exclusive to the PlayStation and later the PlayStation 2. Enix also shifted its Dragon Quest series to the PlayStation in 2001 before merging with Square in 2003. The series then shifted to the PS2 with the 2004 remake of Dragon Quest V and Dragon Quest VIII, which just shipped in North America.
That said, there have been exceptions to the two RPG series' platform exclusivity. The massively multiplayer RPG Final Fantasy XI is currently available for both the PC and PlayStation 2 and will be released on the Xbox 360 next year. The spin-off Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles was released for the GameCube in 2004, and plans for a Revolution version have been announced. Reissues of older FF games have been released for the Game Boy Advance, including the forthcoming Final Fantasy IV Advance. Slime MoriMori: Dragon Quest 2 is coming soon to the DS in Japan. There have also been mobile versions of both series, as well as Final Fantasy releases on the now-dead Wonderswan Color platform.

I am a journalism student doing some research for a story I am developing about the possibilities of installing Linux on the Xbox 360.
First, will it be possible? Will the process be similar to installing Linux on the old machine? Will the 360 be able to function as a better "media center" if Linux is installed?
I am looking for any opinions or ideas. Please feel free to email me: spiraledout2@yahoo.com.
Thanks.

Jaz Posted this:
I attended a VIP Press event yesterday to showcase the Xbox 360. It basically consisted of lots of 360's, and hot chicks serving you free food and free beer. It doesn't get much better than this.
Sadly I wasn't allowed to take photos, because of this:
But I did take a few sneaky ones with my phone, which I'll put at the end.
Firstly, the controller. It's a bit smaller than the 'S' pad on the original Xbox, and it takes a bit of getting used to (especially the Start and Back buttons, and the White and Black now moved to the top of the pad), but once you get used to it, it's perfection.
They also had an original Xbox there connected to Live. After about 2 hours of playing on the 360, I went and sat down and picked up the pad. The old pad feels so wrong after using the new one!
The games. Basically I spent around 20-30 mins on each game (and maybe a lot more on PGR3!), so I'll give them a quick mark out of 10 based on those first impressions.
PGR3 - This was easilly my favourite game of the party. The graphics were superb, presentation was awesome, and the cars handly so perfect it's unbelievable. It's still got that PGR-feel to it, but the cars are much more predictable and handle so smoothly. Awesome to finally play it, and I can't wait to pick it up on release day. First Impression - 10/10.
Perfect Dark Zero - Before I went to the party, PGR3 and Perfect Dark were the two games that I couldn't wait to play. Whilst PGR3 went out of it's way to impress me, it would appear that PDZ went out of it's way to dissapoint me. Visuals are stunning, but gameplay seems tired, old and slow. Very unresponsive, and the lack of a jump button is criminal. The code I played was only 70% complete, so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. For now. First Impression - 5/10.
Call of Duty 2 - The best FPS there. I think this was the game that showed off the 360's graphical powers the best. Superb textures, awesome effects, all in all, just awesomness. Now on my wish list. First Impression - 9/10.
Kameo - Again, superb graphics and top gameplay. Not really my type of game, but it still impressed. My girlfriend spent all of the night playing it, so it must be doing something right! First Impression - 8/10.
Dead or Alive 4 - As far as beat-em-up's go, I've not seen a more polished one than this. Crisp visuals and well annimated. Not to mention the chicks and those bouncing breasts! First Impression - 7.5/10.
Tony Hawks American Wasteland - Plays like every other Tony Hawk, but the visuals are superb. One level I played had a large bit of tarmac with puddles everwhere, and they looked awesome. Could be a nice one to buy for pick up and play moments. First Impression - 7/10.
Condemmed - I'd not really heard much about this before I went to the party, but having played it, I'll be keeping a much closer eye on it from now on! Super classy visuals and very very spooky! Looking forward. First Impression - 9/10.
NBA Live 2006 - If you've seen those "sweat" screenshots that have been around the 'net, you'll know what I'm on about! One of the best looking sports titles that's ever been mate, and plays like a dream too. Crowd looks super real as well! First Impression - 8/10.
I did play on a few other games like Need for Speed and Fifa, but not for long enough to comment on.
So there you have it. All in all it was a superb night. Excellent hospitality, and for that I thank Microsoft. They really did look after us.
My game of the show: PGR3, without a doubt.
Biggest surprise of the show: Call of Duty 2, I didn't expect it to be that pretty!
Biggest disappointment: Perfect Dark Zero. Must improve.
Best video-game breasts: Dead or Alive 4. Who else?

At exactly 12:01am PST today, gamers in that time zone were only 167 hours and 59 minutes away from being able to purchase the Xbox 360 from retailers. But GameSpot didn't have to wait for Zero Hour to get the next-gen console in hand. To celebrate a week left until the system hits shelves, we're giving readers a whole fiesta of Xbox 360 coverage.
As soon as the calendar hits Tuesday, GameSpot will be gushing with tons of new high-definition quality footage of Xbox 360 games, previews of launch titles, and GameSpot's first Xbox 360 game review for Rare Ltd.'s Kameo: Elements of Power. For gearheads, GameSpot also takes an in-depth at the console, with a lengthy hands-on feature on what makes the 360 tick.
Check out GameSpot's Xbox 360 Launch Center for further information, and be sure to check back later tonight for even more coverage. It doesn't end at midnight tonight--over the next few weeks, the site will be stuffed with further coverage of the console, including reports from Microsoft's launch event, Zero Hour, which kicks off on Sunday, November 20 and an Xbox-related feature a day as we count down the last five days before the launch of the Xbox 360.
