Halo 3, the most anticipated game for Xbox 360, could have been shown in a playable, multiplayer form at last month's E3 games show, according to developer Bungie. The only glimpse of next-gen Halo available at the show was the first ever trailer, despite the game being solid enough for gamers to go hands-on.
"Some people don't know that we had the option to let people play multiplayer [Halo 3]," Marty O'Donnell, the composer of Halo 3's musical score, told website Xbox Evolved.
With Halo 3 not due for release until next year, it looks like we'll have to wait quite some time before getting an idea of how Master Chief's new adventure is shaping up.

Perhaps the most important involves the bundling of the Xbox Live Vision camera with a wired headset, the popular Live Arcade title UNO, and a month of Live Gold service for $39.99 when it releases in the States on September 19, 2006.
Granted, this is still an unofficial report (based on a leak of "official" info), so understand that you're probably not gonna get much confirmation from MS until they're good and ready to give it. If you'd like information on what other peripherals are coming out "Holiday 2006" (so sometime in the 4th quarter) and at what price, read on for more.
- New faceplates featuring Halo, Forza 2, & Viva Pinata for $19.99 each
- Wireless headest with a 30-foot range for $59.99
- 256MB Memory Unit for $59.99
- Wireless gaming receiver for $19.99 (but it'll go on sale in Winter 2007, unlike the others, probably around the month of February)

Microsoft has offered a little reassurance to fans of backwards compatibility on Xbox 360, following comments made by the Peter Moore that raised concerns about the future of back 'pat support on the next-gen console.
Moore tickled the hornet's nest when he declared, "Nobody is concerned anymore about backwards compatibility", in an interview with website Kikizo. Speaking further about backwards compatibility on Xbox 360, he said that Microsoft "under promised and over delivered" on the feature and that, while "More [backwards compatible titles] are coming ..at some point you just go, there's enough, let's move on, people aren't as worried about a game being backwards compatible".
Certain parties have taken Moore's comments to mean that Microsoft is very shortly to let the axe fall on backwards compatibility, but a posting made on Gamerscore Blog (an official Microsoft blog site) in response to all the speculation and ranting implies that backwards compatibility is by no means heading to the chopping block any time soon.
In the post, headlined "Backwards Compatibility Update Coming Soon", it's stated that Microsoft's backwards compatibility team is currently "in the testing phase of another update, and it should be out in the next few weeks", with the new back 'pat update featuring "at least a dozen titles".
It goes on the discuss the difficulty of emulating Xbox titles on Xbox 360 and how an originally imagined few dozen 'back compat' titles has become over 200, but the really crucial comment is this: "But rest assured, we're not done yet... We know for a fact that there are lots of people who continue to care about backwards compatibility, including the 'Emulation Ninjas' who are working full time on the updates. And those of us posting on this blog. And, of course, many of you."
So it seems that, while backwards compatibility updates for Xbox 360 will eventually come to an end, the finish line isn't in sight yet. And while we're here, what are your own thoughts on backwards compatibility on Xbox 360? Is it a good thing or, like Peter Moore reckons, are you not really that bothered about it anymore, given the dearth of original Xbox titles on the horizon? Let us know what you think in the comments field below.

A US-based research company firmly believes that a move into the handheld market is still a part of Microsoft's long term plan.
The firm, called The Diffusion Group, recently published a report which has the catchy title of On the Future of Portable Game Consoles: Analysis & Forecasts. It outlines how Microsoft is perfectly placed to get involved with the portable gaming market, in which revenues are "expected to reach $3 billion annually by 2008", and how it could be ready to do so in the next couple of years.
The important thing to remember is that this is The Diffusion Group's educated opinion rather than a leaked confirmation, but many maintain such a movie would make perfect sense. Microsoft's strategy to establish itself as the major force in the gaming market has included championing online gaming and beating both Nintendo and Sony to the punch with a next-gen console, so it seems the only thing left for it to do would be to muscle in on the handheld market.
It would also tie in with Microsoft's latest online service, Live Anywhere, which will allow for cross-platform gaming. At the moment, this is intended to unite gamers using consoles, PCs and mobile phones - with only phones providing any portability. But to really get across the 'Anywhere' aspect of the service, a gaming portable like DS or PSP would surely be needed.
Add to this the fact that J Allard, previously the face of everything Xbox, has been conspicuous by his absence recently, leading to further speculation that the Lex Luther look-alike is working on a pocket-sized Xbox.
All speculation of course - and unfortunately the only official line from Microsoft is "we don't have any plans to do anything in the handheld space", which is what Xbox Europe regional vice president Chris Lewis said at this year's E3. But it seems no matter how adamant Microsoft is in its denials, nothing will stop the speculation.

Contrary to popular belief, not all hackers are pale kids who hole up in their parents' basements, listen to techno, and practice identity theft to pay off their energy-drink addictions. For some, the reason for manipulating computers and electronics echoes the words of George Mallory--"Because it is there."
When Microsoft's Xbox 360 hit retailers last November, it quickly became the hacking community's Mount Everest. And according to a report by The Wall Street Journal, it wasn't just because the machine was the newest, shiniest, coolest gadget of the 2005 holiday season.
"It's about overcoming the challenge Microsoft has set out there," Andrew "Bunnie" Huang told WSJ. Microsoft certainly touted the security of its machine during its development, claiming it would be nearly impossible to crack. "[Microsoft has] bragged about the security for the Xbox 360, so now it's like: Well, let's see," Huang said.
Huang was the first to crack the original Xbox back in 2001. Since then, an entire Xbox modding subculture has sprung up, with numerous developers creating dashboards and alternate, often Linux-based, operating systems for the console. Ads offering to physically mod Xboxes are a common sight on Internet classifieds sites like Craigslist.org, with hardware-heads often willing to swap out hard drives and flash BIOSes for a small fee.
While regular Xbox modding has become a cottage industry of sorts, no one has completely solved the Xbox 360 yet. Some progress has been made, though, and Huang thinks it's only a matter of time. "Things are different from a few years ago. The stakes are higher for Microsoft and the hacking community has intensified its efforts."

Larger hard drives for 360 on the way - but Xbox compatibility not a priority
Microsoft may consider releasing a larger Xbox 360 hard disk in future - but is unlikely to continue devoting significant resources to making Xbox games work on its next-gen format, according to comments made by the firm's games boss Peter Moore.
Speaking to UK website Kikizo at E3 last month, Moore said that "there's going to be a time when we need to look at what we're doing [with hard disks] - but no announcements now".
"We continue looking at the hard drive, we're looking at the behaviour of what people are doing with their hard drives," Moore had said. "Clearly when you have a million downloads you start looking at what you need to do."
Less promising was Moore's take on backwards compatibility - something Sony claims will be fully functional from the outset on PS3 and conversely something Moore believes doesn't really matter to Xbox 360, despite the furore last E3.
"Nobody is concerned anymore about backwards compatibility. We under promised and over delivered on that. It's a very complicated thing... very complex work. I'm just stunned that we have hundreds of games that are backwards compatible," he said.
That doesn't mean we won't get more backwards-compatible games - indeed, "more are coming" - but "at some point, you just go, there's enough, let's move on, or people aren't as worried about a game being backwards compatible - and I like to think we've upheld our end of the bargain in making at least two or maybe three hundred games backwards compat."
Microsoft came under fire at E3 in May 2005 for its doublespeak over the backward compatibility issue, with the firm declining to commit at the time to any details of how much of the Xbox catalogue would work on the new system - although company spokespeople at the time were adamant that its ultimate goal was to achieve full compatibility.

There is a WSJ article that was printed today that reports on some of my (relatively insignificant) dabblings on the Xbox360. I have kept a very low profile with respect to working on the Xbox360, but I guess this article changes things. The article is reasonably accurate, but I feel the need to clarify a few things.
First, hacking the 360 is not a race between me and The Specialist; the “bunnie v. Specialist” tag line is a result of the WSJ’s editorial latitude and their perspective on the scene (and I, of all people, must respect their first amendment rights to report as they see fit, seeing as how I also stand behind the first amendment to protect my right to blog about controversial hacking topics). I give The Specialist huge props for his DVD firmware hack; it’s a great hack and I respect his work a lot. When we found out about his work we were very excited and appreciated the great contributions he’s made in furthering an understanding of the overall security system of the 360. We wouldn’t be anywhere near where we are today without the openness and information-sharing that pervades the hacking scene, and I hope that the portrayal of hacking as a competitive sport does not close off these avenues. I know that I would not be where I am today if it were not for the great collaborations I’ve had in the past with so many anonymous hackers, and my ability to contribute on the 360 would also be greatly diminished if I were to lose such valuable collaborations.
Second, while I have been dabbling in the Xbox360, I’ve been a bit delinquent lately–very busy with my day job, and I haven’t touched the Xbox360 to do any real work on it for a couple months. I owe Speedy22 an apology for not being more diligent about sending him micrographs of the XCPU, but really, right now the pictures aren’t very interesting because all the metal is still on the chip (working with a local vendor to get it removed but it takes a lot of time). Speedy22 was kind enough to provide me some samples of the Xbox360’s chips to digest, and I appreciate his generosity in sending them to me. I also owe tmbinc an apology, I was supposed to run a set of experiments on the “virgin” ROM images that I never got around to. If you still need those results, I’ll get to it.
In the meantime, I hope to refine a technique that will gain access to the polysilicon layer of the XCPU while being non-destructive to the function of the chip. Such access is currently thought to be a major stumbling block to extracting the necessary keys for decrypting firmware images on the Xbox360–and the first step toward homebrewing code on the Xbox360. I wouldn’t hold my breath, however–the technique is very risky and I don’t have a whole lot of time to perfect it. I have to build some custom equipment to help control the etch bath properties for peeling back the silicon. Still, it will be fun and even if it is not successful, I’ll learn something new while I develop the hack!

1up is reporting on speculation from analysts 'The Diffusion Group', who have forecast a handheld gaming device from Microsoft sometime in the next two years. From the article: "It's an analyst group's speculation and should be taken as such, but simultaneously one has to wonder what is the likelihood of Microsoft bringing a PGC to its platform library. A portable entry seemed like the next logical step for Microsoft before E3 -- and that logic was confirmed by the announcement of Live Anywhere at E3 -- a handheld platform would certainly make a solid launching pad for the mobile arm of Live Anywhere, wouldn't it?

Speculation surrounding Microsoft's entry into the handheld videogame hardware market refuses to die, and latest predictions reckon that the company may cause a splash in the handheld arena within two years.
Predictions have come from a recent report issued by research group The Diffusion Group, which states that Microsoft "will likely leverage its Xbox franchise to enter the portable game console (PGC) market in late 2007 or early 2008" and "is expected to embed a portable multimedia player in a handheld gaming platform similar in many respects to Sony's PSP."
It's noted in the report that Microsoft has - apparently - been weighing up a couple of options with regard to entering the handheld market: "...licensing a version of its Xbox OS for others to build portable hardware designs upon or "introducing its own branded PGC [portable gaming console]". But Michael Greeson, CEO of The Diffusion Group and co-author of the report, deems the software licensing route unlikely.
While licensing the software is consistent with Microsoft's larger strategy, and no doubt Microsoft has endured many failures in regard to hardware plays, the success of the Xbox presents Microsoft with a unique opportunity", Greeson commented. "Microsoft owns an established and highly-regarded hardware brand, meaning that they can enter the PGC market from a position of strength, a privilege not enjoyed by any other player except those already active in the PGC space."
We can only wait to see if this informed crystal ball gazing turns out to be accurate, however MS head honcho big Bill Gates himself added further fuel to the fire in an interview on ZDNet. When asked about that portable media player, Gates said: "I have no announcement to make today. We are looking at various ways to bring more to that space. There is a lot yet that hasn't been done."

Microsoft's director of programming for Xbox Live, Larry Hryb - better known to gamers as Major Nelson - has revealed that Call of Duty 2 is the most popular choice for Xbox 360 owners playing online.
Hryb has published the latest Xbox Live charts on his blog, showing that Ghost Recon 3 is in second place, followed by hit RPG Oblivion and Battlefield 2: Modern Combat.
In fifth place it's Final Fantasy XI, with Project Gotham Racing 3 at No. 6. EA's Fight Night 3 is in seventh, followed by the only Xbox Live Arcade title in the chart - the next-gen version of classic card game Uno. Ninth place goes to Rare shooter Perfect Dark Zero, with Dead or Alive 4 in tenth.
As for the original Xbox, it seems that Halo 2 is still the most popular game on Live more than 18 months after its release. Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is in second place, followed by Counter-Strike, PES 5 and Splinter Cell Chaos.
The Madden series is still proving hugely popular in the US, with NFL 2006 is in at sixth place. Rainbow Six: Black Arrow is at seven, followed by Star Wars: Battlefront 2 and Forza Motorsport. Ghost Recon 2: Summit Strike is at No. 10.

The war of words between bitter rivals Microsoft and Sony has intensified, with top Xbox Europe execs launching an astonishing attack on the Japanese firm's decision to include its next-generation DVD technology in PlayStation 3 as standard.
Speaking to Eurogamer TV in part one of an exclusive E3 interview broadcast today, Xbox UK boss Neil Thompson and Europe boss Chris Lewis both accused Sony of “forcing” its Blu-Ray DVD technology onto consumers.
“Sony are now making people pay an extra few hundred pounds for a Blu-Ray DVD drive which we don't know is going to be the standard in the next-generation DVD formats,” Thompson insisted.
“This is the company that brought out Betamax – we don't quite know where they're going to go with this,” he added, in a pointed reference to Sony's defeat in the format war against VHS.
Microsoft believes Blu-Ray's inclusion in PS3 plays right into the US firm's hands, since it is offering Xbox 360 users the option to upgrade to next-generation movie tech later this year with the release of a standalone HD-DVD drive.
“If gamers over time choose to go to HD-DVD we're going to give them the choice to do that, but we're not going to force them to buy that day one,” Thompson remarked.
“I find it concerning for consumers that they're being forced into a purchase... I don't think they need to make that decision for another two, three years maybe. Sony now have a very interesting business model I think they're going to find challenging.”
Thompson's frank views were backed by Europe boss Chris Lewis, who added: “[PS3's] is an interesting price point that in my view forces the consumer down a choice path in a way that I'm surprised to see.”
Lewis also added that the price positioning of PS3 removed any immediate pressure on Microsoft to cut the price of 360 before year-end, commenting: “We're confident that we are at the right price at the right time and will remain so, and nothing I've heard in the last two days does anything other than frankly reinforce that view.”

Microsoft's director of programming for Xbox Live, better known as Major Nelson, has announced that the Xbox Live Vision camera will get a simultaneous release in Europe and the US this autumn.
The XLV camera will allow gamers to personalise their gamertag picture, send photo messages, and chat over Xbox Live. It can also be used to play Xbox Live Arcade games such as Uno and Texas Hold 'Em Poker. As previously announced, GestureTek will be providing the technology that powers the device.
According to Nelson's latest podcast, the forthcoming Xbox Live update is all set to work with the camera, so users can expect a "plug and play experience."
"The camera is launching this fourth quarter," Nelson said, adding: "We've actually given a specific date both for North America and Europe of September 19th." There was no word as to how much the camera will cost, however.

The directorless film adaptation of Microsoft's popular video game will be executive produced by triple-Academy Award winners Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh via their WingNut Films banner. The Halo script was penned by Alex Garland (28 Days Later), who was paid $1 million by Microsoft to write a script that met Bungie's approval.
With the third installment in the game series rumored to be connected with the silver screen adaptation, could the delay of the movie affect the release of Halo 3 or are they both planned to arrive in winter 2007/2008? According to Bungie, Halo 3 and the Halo movie will not affect each other in terms of release dates.

As the current-gen Xbox nears the end of its life cycle, Microsoft has announced the launch of a new budget software range that will see hit titles retailing for just GBP 9.99.
The 'Best of Classics' range is the follow-up to the Xbox Classics range - launched just over three years ago - which saw best-selling games go on sale for GBP 19.99.
According to Microsoft a wide variety of games will be launched under the new brand, including Halo 2, Project Gotham Racing 2, Counter-Strike, The Simpsons and Fable: The Lost Chapters. Vivendi titles Crash Bandicoot: Wrath of Cortex, Crash Nitro Kart and Crash Twinsanity will also be included in the range.

Good news for anyone who's ever got mind-numbingly bored downloading from Xbox Live; the next system update will feature something called 'Active Download', which will let you download files from the Marketplace whilst playing games, watching DVDs or even building a small fort out of empty cereal boxes.
This is all according to a Microsoft Knowledge Base article, which details 'Active Download' along with several other features originally due for an update last Tuesday. Alongside the download feature - which according the Knowledge Base entry allows you to "stream music, play DVDs or CDs, play arcade titles, and play games while you download an item from the marketplace" - dashboard and DVD playback tweals are also detailed.
Apperantly you will soon have the option to boot directly to the dashboard without booting a game or DVD disc, which we're sure will please the legions of fans campaigning for the option. The ability to resume downloads is also talked of, along with some sort of update for the console's DVD playback.
The penned date for the update has obviously passed and Microsoft has since pulled the Knowledge Base article, but we think it'd be safe to assume the detailed updates will be streaming down our broadband pipes eventually. We'll let you know when Microsoft presses its big red button.
