Source: Tech blogs Engadget and Gizmondo citing a source is a source of course, of course .
The official story: See below.
What we heard: The work week got off to a sizzling start on Monday when a report from the Seattle Times stated that Microsoft's rumored portable, sometimes referred to as the xPod or Xboy because of its music and gaming potential, was in fact a line of portables. Citing a source, the author of the article said that the "Argo" would feature WiFi capability and compete in the same market with the DS and PSP.
Microsoft obviously would not cop to the news, and declined to comment entirely.
But that wasn't all that sprang forth from the wealth of knowledge from sources. Engadget talked to its spies and found out that Argo was the name of the project, which is under the watchful eye of none other than J Allard, the former face of the Xbox. The sources also revealed that the gadget would be dubbed "Zune."
However, even though Allard is overseeing the project, the Zune looks like it will be mostly music-centric--for now, at least. The WiFi capability is in place primarily for wireless song transfers, not multiplayer gaming. Gizmondo states that there will be some gaming however, just not anything like an on-the-go Xbox.
Of course even the iPod, which is rumored to be the target of Zune, has some mini-games, such as a Breakout rip-off. The likely power of the Zunes' games? Think something like Palm-OS-based diversions, or even simple Xbox Live Arcade games.
Of course the Zune could also just be the first step towards something bigger. People are already speculating about Xbox 360 integration with the device, beginning with streaming audio, like the iPod currently does. But add a few buttons, a thumbstick, and a little more horsepower, and the Zune could soon be singing gamers' tunes.
Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus that Microsoft's handheld is named Zune, and not bogus that it won't seriously game in its first incarnation.

No Xbox 360 owner is going to complain that there are too many demos available for download over Xbox Live Marketplace. Apparently Electronic Arts also believes that there can't be too many demos either, as the publisher continues to roll out demos of each 360 game it has on store shelves, and even one that hasn't yet made it to retail.
That trend continues, as GameSpot News has learned that a demo for Lord of the Rings, The Battle for Middle-earth II is scheduled to be released Thursday, July 13. The exact time of its availability has not yet been announced.
The trial will feature both single- and multiplayer and take gamers into the War in the North campaign. Console real-time strategy games will likely be unfamiliar to most, so EA has included a tutorial to show players how to use the 360's controller to direct their legions.
The single-player portion of the demo will feature the first mission in the evil campaign, and have players siege an Elven stronghold. The multiplayer portion offers one-on-one battles over Xbox Live, pitting Elven and Goblin armies against each other.
The Lord of the Rings, The Battle for Middle-earth II was released last week, is rated T for Teen, and retails for $59.99.

The high-profile Florida murder trial known as "the Xbox slayings" began today in St. Augustine, where it was relocated after officials decided the Central Florida town of Deltona, where the murders occurred, would not be able to handle the media attention.
Just a day after the 12-person jury--five men and seven women--was selected, the prosecution presented their opening statements in the case that will decide the futures of Troy Victorino, 29, Michael Salas, 20, and Jerone Hunter, 20.
The three men are being accused of taking the lives of Erin Belanger, 22, Michelle Nathan, 19, Francisco Ayo-Roman, 30, Anthony Vega, 34, Roberto Gonzales, 28, and Jonathan Gleason, 17, in August 2004. The trio, along with Robert Cannon, 19, allegedly beat and stabbed the victims to death after Belanger took an Xbox from the house where Victorino had been squatting.
Prosecuting attorney John Tanner described the gory details he is building his case around. "The girls are screaming, the solid, sickening sound of bats on flesh and bone. You hear the screams of the dog being smashed in the face. It will come alive for you in this trial." He claims the events all happened "in a matter of minutes."
Tanner is going to need to more powerful remarks like that as his side was dealt a devastating blow today. Cannon, the alleged fourth participant in the slayings, refused to testify for the prosecution. The 19-year old had previously made a plea to cooperate and testify against Victorino, Salas, and Hunter, in exchange for being spared the death penalty. Cannon would not take the stand and asked to withdraw his plea.
The defendants are facing six counts of first-degree murder, five counts of mutilating a dead human body, as well as other felonies.

July 12th, 2006, 17:24 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft chairman Bill Gates will deliver one of three keynote addresses to the 2007 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas next January.
The keynote, taking place on January 7th, will be Gates' ninth and possibly one of his most important, as Microsoft faces significant challenges on several fronts.
Microsoft's console business will face renewed challenge following the respective November and Q4 launches of rival PlayStation 3 and Wii formats, and the company will be looking to energise its software base with the 2007 launch of the Windows Vista operating system.
Widespread reports, anchored in the Seattle technology press, also suggest Microsoft will be launching a significant offensive in digital-media, with the release of the "Argo" media device and associated software and services anticipated before the end of the year.
Previous Gates keynotes at CES have included significant games division announcements and with PlayStation 3 and Wii certain to be on the market by next January, 2007's will likely be no exception.
During his keynote in January of this year, Gates solidified Microsoft's backing of the next-generation HD-DVD format with the announcement of an external Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive - due out before the end of 2006.
He even snuck in a couple of software announcements, revealing that Texas Hold 'Em poker and Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting would be making an appearance on Xbox Live Arcade during 2006. (The latter has now been confirmed for release on August 2nd.)
And interest in Gates' keynote is only likely to have been intensified by the recent announcement that he plans to draw back from the day to day running of Microsoft in July 2008 to work full-time for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Gates' January 2007 address will be one of three CES keynotes - with Motorola chairman and CEO Ed Zander, and Roger Iger, president and CEO of The Walt Disney Company, also set to deliver speeches.
The 2007 International Consumer Electronics Show takes place between January 8th and 11th.

July 12th, 2006, 17:23 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft plans to release a new Xbox Live Arcade title every week until August 9th.
Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting, one of the most highly anticipated titles on the Live Arcade schedule, has been given a concrete release date of August 2nd.
Meanwhile, arcade legends Pac-Man and Galaga join the line up, with Konami's Frogger, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary year, available from today.
Joining those titles will be newcomer Cloning Clyde, which has attracted press attention with its simple concept and interesting gameplay ideas.
Each of the unreleased titles will go live at 8AM GMT on one of the next four Wednesdays, and the first, Frogger, costs 400 Microsoft points (GBP 3.40). Xbox Live Arcade titles usually cost between 400 and 800 points, which users buy in bulk via micropayment.
July 12 - Frogger (Konami)
July 19 - Cloning Clyde (NinjaBee)
July 26 - Galaga (Namco)
August 2 - Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting (Capcom)
August 9 - Pac-Man (Namco)
The news that Microsoft plans to release five Live Arcade titles in the space of five weeks will be warmly received by fans of the service - although some will also question the whereabouts of the highly anticipated Lumines Live from former SEGA developer Tetsuya Mizuguchi's Q Entertainment studio.
Although the service boasts a broad range of titles, it has been over two months since the release of the last game - a version of popular card game UNO - and there have only been seven other new releases since the turn of the year.
One of the reasons it's taken so long to bring such small games to Live Arcade at a regular rate, Microsoft said recently, is that publishers weren't originally convinced of Live Arcade's merits.
However, with the platform holder now claiming that it has registered five million downloads (though the figures may be inflated by the inclusion of trial versions), and a groundswell of popular opinion on its side, the number of sceptics is starting to dwindle.
This week's announcement is also the first sign of the titles promised by Microsoft during its E3 showcase, when it revealed that publishers including Namco, Konami and Sega - working on a version of Sonic the Hedgehog - had pledged elements of their back catalogue to the burgeoning digital distribution service.
Prior to that, Xbox Live Arcade titles had generally been culled from the catalogues of independently made web and mobile titles from the likes of Carbonated Games and PomPom - with Midway (Robotron, Smash TV) and second-party developer Bizarre Creations (Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved) the only major labels to get involved prior to that.

July 11th, 2006, 22:41 Posted By: wraggster
A revelatory piece by investigative journalist Brier Dudley in yesterday’s Seattle Times claims that J Allard’s much-hyped, hugely secretive “iPod-killer” will also play games as part of a full line-up of Xbox-branded products.
According to Dudley, the project is apparently code-named 'Argo' – the name of Greek mythological hero Jason’s ship, as opposed to, say, code-name 'Troj', after the mythological Trojan Horse.
Or, should you choose to believe gadget site Gizmodo, project 'Argo' is now apparently finally named 'Zune'. Either way, true or false, it’s good to see that the names being bandied about are as equally ludicrous as Xbox 360 and Wii. SPOnG expects nothing less.
For the purposes of this news piece, we will refer to it as the 'Zune’ – for no reason other than it's a superbly daft name and therefore, going by recent cultural trends in games industry product naming, highly likely to be a contender.
The rumour mill went into overdrive following earlier reports from Bloomberg of a planned iPod Rival (‘MiPod?’ suggested some wag in the SPOnG office earlier) in the pipeline supposedly launching this Christmas. Rumours of a portable Xbox project have of course been floating around for some time now, many emanating from Dean Takahashi of the San Jose Mercury News, who has recently written a detailed and well-received book on the Xbox project. Read SPOnG's reports on these from earlier in the year right here.
Back to the 'Zune'. Dudley outlines in his Seattle Times piece: “A few details trickled out last week from music companies that Microsoft is lining up to support the device. Microsoft isn't commenting, but I was able to piece together a broader picture with some research, reporting and information from a source close to the project. What's being developed is actually a complete line of Xbox-branded digital-media products, including a device that plays media, a software media player and an online media service.”
He added: “This is more than just another MP3 player. It will also compete with game players from Sony and Nintendo that have long had Wi-Fi and work as media players, Internet terminals and communication devices.”
Dudley also suggests that ‘the Zune’ will utilise Microsoft’s XNA game development toolkit, which enables developers to create titles for multiple platforms.
He also went onto speculate that, “...the timing of the hype cycle is perfect…Microsoft's annual meeting with financial analysts is July 27, and it's looking bleak. Wall Street is furious Microsoft won't be selling new versions of Windows and Office in the fall as promised….Argo [Zune] could help the December quarter and give executives something to discuss with analysts other than product delays, Bill Gates' departure and the high cost of doing battle with Google.”
It's all very interesting yet highly speculative stuff. Microsoft, as is the company's way with these things, has so far declined to offer any 'official' comment.
Expect to see a news update with more facts and fewer ‘rumours’ from insiders or moles in the coming days. In the meantime, to confuse the issue just a little more, check out this pic of 'The Zune' that's currently doing the rounds on the gadget blogs, and let us know what you think in the forum below.

Is this the answer to our summer woes? Well, let's put it this way: it's either Prey or Chromehounds -- if you're an Xbox 360 owner. We're goin' with the Cherokee alien abductee, even if Prey is a short-lived romp. This one's got 'summer blockbuster' written all over it...
Detroit Free Press (100/100) is not noted for its gaming insight, but chimes in with praise: "This is one game any Half-Life or Doom fan can buy without reservations."
1up (80/100) wants more of the gimmicks: "If only the Native American mysticism had figured in more. If only the spirit "death walk" had developed into something more than a shooting gallery. If only the voice acting and storytelling were a little better."
GameSpot (75/100) deals a low score -- by its standards -- summing it up: "[Much] of the game's potential for unique thrills feels wasted by its straightforward level design, and the multiplayer doesn't add much to the package."

Microsoft's new digital music player is actually a complete line of Xbox-branded digital-media products, software and hardware, according to Seattle Times columnist Brier Dudley.
Pictures of the main device, codenamed Argo, are now circulating, and Dudley says that the device will be capable of playing games as well - something that would see Microsoft taking on Sony's PSP and Nintendo's DS as well as its most likely rival, Apple's iPod.
Last week, Bloomberg reported that the device would go on sale this Christmas and include Wi-Fi network connectivity - something that Apple's iPod range does not feature.
Microsoft has so far declined to comment on any of the reports, which have been widespread for several months and usually identify the Xbox division - headed by J Allard - as the principle architects of the device and now service.
In a column entitled "Argo aims guns at more than iPod" this week, Dudley cites "research, reporting and information from a source close to the project", and ultimately identifies not just a device that plays back media, but a software media player and an online media service - immediately drawing comparison to Apple's iTunes and Music Store respectively.
"This is more than just another MP3 player," says Dudley. "It will also compete with game players from Sony and Nintendo that have long had Wi-Fi and work as media players, Internet terminals and communication devices."
He goes on to say that Argo will "likely" showcase XNA, Microsoft's multi-platform game development architecture.

Gamasutra reports that Microsoft has announced Xbox Live Wednesdays, a soon-to-be weekly release of content to Xbox Live. They have a listing of the next few weeks worth of content, and happily Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting is slated for August 2nd. Frogger will be coming out tomorrow, July 12th, with Cloning Clyde due next week, Galaga the week after that, and Pac-Man expected on August 9th. From the article:
"Xbox Live Arcade's Frogger has been enhanced for the Xbox 360, and features new, enhanced artwork that matches and complements the original style. In addition, according to Microsoft, the game's audio, including sound effects and music, has been modernized to sound crisp and clear on today's high performance sound systems."
While these releases have mostly been seen as filler for the 360's very uneventful summer schedule, I can't complain too much about the chance to play Street Fighter II again. I'll be playing Chun Li; Who is your character?

Set in the futuristic-y locale Pacific City, Crackdown finds you assuming the role of a crime buster attached to an outfit called The Agency, a force established to battle the criminal element after the police have their held hands up in defeat and run away screaming like little girls. Handily, you - or the agent lead character - are actually a superhuman cloned for maximum law enforcement whose skills and physical capabilities evolve during the course of the action. So, er, watch out you dirty rotten crims!
The Xbox 360 game's being developed by David Jones and his team at Real Time Worlds, and it's worth noting that Jones was the creative brain behind the original Grand Theft Auto titles and one Lemmings - fantastic games to have tucked under his belt, and we hope it can only mean good things for Crackdown.
To be honest though, we haven't found the two new gameplay trailers that have hit the 'net - and this here page - particularly inspiring, but check them out for yourself to see what you think.
We took an in-depth look at Crackdown back in April this year, so go have a gander at that for more information.

You'll know from our recent interview with producer Ahmed Boukhelifa that Test Drive Unlimited is one of the Xbox 360 racers we're most looking forward to this autumn.
And so today we've got a little treat for you in the form of an exclusive gameplay movie of one of Test Drive's Unlimited's tastiest motors, the Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder.
Enjoy a virtual fly around the car model in one of TDU's showrooms to some tasteful Italian opera, before hitting the streets of the Hawaiian isle for some pumping drum and bass as you rip up the roads, spin doughnuts and even catch a glimpse of the highly detailed car interiors and cockpits.
You should also make adjustment in your viewing mirrors for the fact that this vid has been taken at standard 480p, so TDU and the Spyder will look even more amazing in their full and glorious hi-def incarnation.
We've also scattered some fresh screens for you about the place, so enjoy today's TDU double whammy.

The Seattle Times reports that details on Microsoft's handheld gaming/music device are finally slipping out. The Argo project looks to be Microsoft's hedge against angry analysts, upset that the next versions of Office and Windows have slipped yet again. From the article:
"As reported last week, initially by Bloomberg News, the device is expected to go on sale by Christmas. It has Wi-Fi capability so it can connect wirelessly to home and public networks and other players. Wi-Fi sounds like a big deal if you're comparing the player to the wire-bound iPod. But this is more than just another MP3 player. It will also compete with game players from Sony and Nintendo that have long had Wi-Fi and work as media players, Internet terminals and communication devices. Argo is likely to showcase another Allard project -- XNA, a new toolkit that helps game developers create titles for multiple platforms."

There must be a simple explanation as to why WW2 first-person-shooter Call of Duty 2 for the Xbox 360 sold out at this Akihabara shop, like that store had only three copies in stock. Facing entrenched competition from Sony and Nintendo, the 360 has had an uphill fight in the Land of the Rising Sun. It hasn't been easy and will only get harder, but 360 keeps plugging away. My advice? More games and take heart Microsoft, it's the small battles that win the war.
