BioWare is one of our favourite RPG developers in the world, boasting a long succession of high quality RPG titles which never fail to delight, amaze and innovate. It's Canadian too and full of very nice people as we know from an extensive tour around BioWare's HQ back in the day.
So when BioWare makes a new RPG, the games-playing world is well advised to sit up and take notice, especially when that title is Mass Effect, a new sci-fi offering which had our discerning RPG pundits all of a twitter at this year's E3. Mass Effect sees you cast as Shepard, the only Human Spector - or intergalactic police officer - who discovers a terrible secret which could lead to the massacre of all organic life in the galaxy. Ouch.
'Game of the show' was how one excited CVG staffer described it, after an extensive eyes on with the BioWare crew - and we've little reason to doubt his word.
So we're proud to present a raft of new Mass Effect screens for you to enjoy this morning - and with the Leipzig Games Show imminent, followed by Microsoft's own X06 event out in Barcelona in September, we'll be bringing you a whole heap more on Mass Effect as soon as we can gather it.
In the meantime, enjoy the screens and, if you haven't had a chance to check out the recent extended trailer, simply wobble eyeballs right to see what you've been missing. This is probably the most exciting RPG in development at the moment.

Want to get a longer warranty on your Xbox360, then sign up, heres the details:
To: Microsoft Corporation
We the undersign believe that the MICROSOFT CORPORATION needs to revise the current length of warranty on the XBOX360 videogame system. At the present time XBOX360 owners within the United States of America are only protected by a three(3) month warranty period through the manufacturer(Microsoft). This length of time is not sufficient. The minimum warranty period should be one(1) year for all systems.
Our backing for this claim comes after large numbers of consumers who purchased systems, are now experiencing defects with the product. These defects cause the product to become un-operational. The company (MICROSOFT) has only been replacing system up to 3 months old with either a)new systems, or b) “refurbished” systems. After the 3 month period consumers are expected to pay between fifty(50) and One Hundred and Twenty-Nine(129) dollars for repairs. This warranty is outrageous, and is in place to protect the company and a product that is obviously inherently flawed. Many consumers have had units replaced 2 or more times, in some cases upwards of 5 to 7 times, within the past 8 months since the system launch.
We the undersigned are DEMANDING that MICROSOFT re-evaluates and amend the current warranty and make a new warranty retroactive so all past consumers are covered. At this time we are seeking replacement systems for ALL consumers who are experiencing defective hardware.
Sincerely,

Just when we all thought the sniping between the format holders was over, Microsoft’s Richard Teversham has dismissed the launch plans of rivals Sony and Nintendo – whilst hinting at “surprise” spoiler tactics this Q4.
Speaking exclusively to MCV, Teversham questioned whether his competitors could launch their consoles in Europe this year and even accused Sony of abusing its fanbase to sell PS3s at £425.
“Sony has got great loyalty and they are going to seriously use that loyalty to ensure that they sell a console,” said Teversham. “On day one they will have pre-sold most of what they’ve got. But the question is, will they actually be able to launch in Europe and if they do, what are the tiny quantities going to be in Europe.
“And although Wii is almost a GameCube with a DVD drive, is Nintendo going to have enough quantity to satisfy the demand?”
While Teversham ruled out a cut on 360’s SRP before Christmas, he went on to slam PS3’s price tag. “The question is: When are they going to drop the price? I think a lot of gamers out there are going to be saying ‘I’ll wait for the price to drop,’ or even better they’ll buy a 360.”
Teversham also warned that Microsoft has a few spoilers planned for Q4. “I don’t want to reveal any plans at the moment because we want to keep a number of surprises up our sleeve. We will ensure we are good value and we’ll do that through having a variety of pricing on games, a variety of pricing on console offers.”
Teversham went on record to talk about Microsoft's new portable media device project Zune too, as he told MCV: "It is a combination of hardware and software. As for rollout and compatibility you’re going to have to watch this space - when we launch there will be a lot of noise around it. It’s about Microsoft bringing together communities on devices like Xbox, Zune and PC."

Speaking to the Mainichi, Takashi Sensui, General Manager Xbox Japan, has suggested that Microsoft currently have no plans to incorporate the forthcoming HD-DVD drive internally within Xbox 360 units, but did suggest that this could be a possibility if consumers show enough demand.
Obviously Microsoft are in a position where they'll wait and see how next-generation DVD pans out before making such a decision; who will win between HD-DVD and Blu-ray; whether such a feature warrants the exorbitant price that Sony are demanding for the PlayStation3 and if gamers are really concerned about such a feature.

Microsoft has a history of bleeding losses in its games division including 2005 fiscal year losses of $485 million and 2006 losses of $1.26 billion. Despite cost reduction attempts, the company still expects to incur losses in the 2007 fiscal year, this according to the entertainment and devices division president, Robbie Bach. The hopefully news, however, is that in fiscal 2008, MS could see some black ink in its games division for the first time ever.
In speaking directly to the amassed losses, Bill Gates said, "I eat pieces of crap like you for breakfast," after which Steve Ballmer questioned, "You eat billions of dollars in losses for breakfast?"

The official story: See below.
What we heard: Few things generate as much interest as a hot bowl of steaming Halo gossip. Small wonder, then, that ye olde Internet was abuzz this week with two big rumors regarding the next project from the sci-fi shooter's developer.
First up is a post on the blog of Eric Nylund, author of the Halo novels Fall of Reach and First Strike. Though the message was posted on July 11, it fell below most people's radar ... until a few days ago. That's when thousands of gamers stood up and took notice of the tantalizing clues Nylund dropped--clues about a major new franchise coming from Microsoft Game Studios.
After talking a bit about his current project, the eagerly anticipated Gears of War, Nylund talks about his forthcoming project. "What am I working on next? Well, if you took all the best parts of your favorite games, and smashed them together at light speed with your favorite movies and books, you'd get something close to this," he said. "It's not announced yet, but as soon as Microsoft does, I can at least tell you the title, genre, and what particular thing makes this game goose-bump worthy. So stay tuned."
Nylund's comments and his Halo connection helped resurrect rumors that Bungie is working on a project called "Forerunner," a free-roaming action game set in the Halo universe before the events of Halo. Further weight was thrown behind the theory by an article on the less-than-reputable-but-often-accurate UK gaming site SPOnG. The site's editors claim to have learned that Bungie will be announcing a new IP at X06, its forthcoming European Xbox expo.
"Speaking to a Microsoft source close to the management of the entire Xbox 360 project today, we were told that, 'As far as things stand, Halo 3 is the last game [in the series].' ... A new game from Bungie, not Halo 4, will be announced soon and pre-production has begun." According to SPOnG, "Another trilogy, likely a prequel, will be announced at some point in the next 12 months."
Were that not enough brain candy for Halo-heads for one week, gaming blog Kotaku jumped on the band wagon with its own theory--that the "new IP" will actually be a next-gen version of the shooter that started it all for the studio. "After all, Halo is a sort of sequel to the entire Marathon trilogy... the Master Chief even wears a more advanced version of the same [Mjolnir power] armor," said the site. "A prequel bridging Halo and Marathon would really be quite within Bungie's modus operandi." [EDITOR'S NOTE: The Marathon series took place at the end of the 28th Century--over 500 years after Halo, which is set in the mid-23rd Century.]
So what did Microsoft have to say about this big ol' ruckus? You can probably guess. "Microsoft does not comment on rumors or speculation," was the familiar refrain from the software behemoth's external PR representative. So, with no hard facts, this triple-serving of scuttlebutt can't be proven or disproven. A nerd can dream, though, can't one?
Bogus or not bogus?: See above.

Console-owning fans of the Warhammer fantasy gaming franchise were given hope at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo by the developer of the massively multiplayer Warhammer Online game, Mythic Entertainment. The company revealed it had a version of the upcoming PC game running on the Xbox 360, but it didn't actually confirm that the game was headed to Microsoft's platform. But, with cash-flush Electronic Arts' recent purchase of Mythic, a console version seems more likely.
Now those who fancy the franchise's futuristic spin-off, Warhammer 40,000, can have a similarly noncommittal hope of seeing space marines and orcs doing battle on consoles. In an interview with trade site GamesIndustry.biz, Relic Entertainment general manager Ron Moravek addresses the possibility of bringing a pair of the company's real-time strategy games, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War and the upcoming military-themed Company of Heroes, to new platforms.
"We're watching Lord of the Rings [Battle for Middle-earth II] going to 360 very closely," Moravek told the site, referencing the recent console port of another fantasy RTS game. "Because if it's successful, I think there's a good chance we could bring Company of Heroes and even Dawn of War over."
When asked about Relic's preference between the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, Moravek said he hadn't seen enough of the PS3 to form a preference, but he added that Relic will support them both.

Xbox Europe head of marketing Richard Teversham doesn't know if Nintendo and Sony will be able to launch their new systems across the pond this year, but he said Microsoft has a few surprises at the ready if they do, according to an article on the Web site of British industry publication MCV.
Teversham apparently told the magazine he doesn't know if either the PlayStation 3 or the Wii will make it to European shelves this year and "accused Sony of abusing its fan base to sell PS3s at £425" [MCV's words, not necessarily Teversham's]. And even if the systems do make their 2006 European launch dates, Teversham questioned what kind of supply they would be in. He suggested a Sony launch would come with "tiny quantities" of the system, and that the supply of Wiis might be outstripped by consumer demand.
Even if they do launch on time and without shortages, Teversham suggested Microsoft would be ready with a counter. But contrary to recent speculation, it won't be a price drop.
"I don't want to reveal any plans at the moment because we want to keep a number of surprises up our sleeve," he told the magazine. "We will ensure we are good value, and we'll do that through having a variety of pricing on games, a variety of pricing on console offers."
Earlier this month, rumors began circulating about a planned Xbox 360 bundle that will come with an Xbox 360, Project Gotham Racing 3, 1,250 Xbox Live Marketplace points, and a three-month Xbox Live Gold subscription card. The $399 bundle would presumably include the premium Xbox 360 model, in which case it would offer a savings of $85 over buying the contents separately.

THQ is perhaps the fist major publisher to show a shift in strategy away from next-generation publishing, as the firm announces it has canned the Xbox 360 version of The Soprano game spin-off. Only the PlayStation 2 version now remains.
This news follows the cancellation of the PlayStation 3 version of the latest Smackdown game, one of THQ's flagship titles and the series that built the firm to the size it is today with massive successes earlier in the decade. That announcement, posted alongside somewhat worrying financials, led many to believe that THQ will go into a consolidated mode for perhaps the next year, targeting current-generation platforms with healthy installed userbases.
It's well-known fact that slow Xbox 360 production routines cost publishers dearly in the past nine months, with early adopter numbers strangled and those able to pick up a machine buying only AAA games. Consumers also showed an impressive resistance to bundles, the retailer's main route to shifting average or low-selling games early on in a platform's lifecycle. This was mainly due to the shift in buying power, away from parents easily tricked into thinking they were getting a bargain and into the hands of core gamers who intend only buying the system, an extra controller and the game of their choice, thank you very much.
We have requested a comment from THQ on the firm's current strategy and will publish it as soon as it lands.

New from Play Asia:
XSATA lets you free up hard drive space by transferring content between your console and your PC. Using your XBOX 360 file manager software such as the free PC app Xplorer 360, you can use XSATA to transfer materials from your console’s hard drive to your PC, using your computer’s hard disc space to store demos, game saves and other such materials you’re not currently using. When you need them again, just transfer back to the XB360’s drive. Once the data is on your PC, you can email content not locked to your machine or L!VE account to your friends for them to use on their own consoles too.
XSATA is a plug-and-play device that sits between your XB360’s hard drive and the console itself. There’s no need to remove your XB360’s hard drive to use it. The PC and the 360 can then ‘share’ the HDD so it can remain in place at all times.
To connect your console to your computer, just plug the supplied cable into the High Speed USB port on the back of XSATA and into any spare USB port on your PC. XSATA is USB 2.0-compatible, so you can expect ultra-fast transfer speeds of up to 480mbps. It looks great too, with blue laser light giving a real cool edge to your gaming machine.

Earlier this month, a GameStop product listing for Fusion Frenzy 2 for the Xbox 360 showed up on the Retail Radar. Today Microsoft confirmed that its original Xbox launch title Fuzion Frenzy would be getting a sequel after all--and a properly (or improperly, depending on one's perspective) spelled one at that.
Fuzion Frenzy 2 is set for release in the US this holiday season and will feature 40 minigames set on seven different planets, as well as online multiplayer matches and tournaments. Players will be able to use "tournament cards" they've earned for a variety of purposes, including selecting the next game to be played or choosing the next planet to go to.
Microsoft will publish the game, but it is entrusting development to Hudson. Well known for its experience with the party game genre, Hudson counts hits like Bomberman and Mario Party among its past titles.
It seems Fuzion Frenzy 2 won't be the only party game to hit the Xbox 360 this holiday season. According to the Web site of original Fuzion Frenzy developer Blitz Games, the studio is currently working on a secret project it describes as "an exciting new suite of 'pick-up and play' action games for Xbox and Xbox 360." That project is also due in the fourth quarter.

Steady! Master Chief confirmed for 2006 appearance on Xbox 360 - literally
It looks like Master Chief will be making a 2006 appearance on the Xbox 360 after all, but before we you get too excited; it's not quite what you might think.
Online retailers have begun showing listings for a rather pretty Halo faceplate- but before you grab your torches and pitchforks, know that it is a really pretty faceplate. Coming in a nice shade of blue, the Halo-themed covering has Master Chief's mug masterfully plastered next to the ring of light.
The faceplate is currently listed for an October 24 release in the US, at a $19.99 (£10.70) price point.
