New online petition demands a fully localised version of Bethesda's all-consuming RPG
While we in the West have been fully gorging ourselves on Bethesda's amazing Oblivion in both its PC and Xbox 360 incarnations, it seems Japanese gamers have been denied their share of the Oblivion spoils.
With no plans apparent to launch the game over in the Land of the Rising Sun, a new petition has just gone online from Japanese Xbox 360 fans (both of them - hehe only kidding MS) demanding that a fully localised version of the game debut over in the east.
It's a particularly interesting one this, given that MS needs to drive sales over in the East and if it could persuade Bethesda to deliver the goods, then maybe, just maybe, Oblivion would prove a tipping point title which brings reluctant Japanese role playing fans into the Xbox fold.
However, with PS3 and even PSP versions of Oblivion rumoured to be in the works, and the PS3 one possibly as a launch title, perhaps Bethesda has spread its eggs into other baskets? The race is on, for Japanese RPG fans' hearts and minds, but how will they get their dose of Oblivion?

As part of Gamasutra's visit to Shanghai for this week's ChinaJoy game exhibition, we've discovered that Xbox 360 game piracy appears to be spreading notably in the country, with at least one vendor offering Xbox 360 titles such as Hitman: Blood Money for around 30 Chinese yuan ($3.50).
This development has occurred after an incident in March 2006, in which hackers managed to flash changes to the BIOS on the Xbox 360's Optical Disc Drive which allowed non-authenticated (copied) games to be played. Further information on the hack surfaced in late May, when other parties appear to have released a public version of the exploit, and Microsoft's Gamerscore Blog published an Official response to the problem.
At the time, the company's John Porcaro noted: "The core security system has not been broken. However, on some Xbox 360 consoles the authentication protocol between the optical disc drive and the console may be attacked via a complex software and hardware modification which could allow people to play illegally copied and modified games. We continue to invest in the security of the platform and will respond appropriately as unauthorized activity is identified."
Obviously, it seems likely that connecting to Xbox Live will, at some point, download system updates which will prevent continued playing of pirate titles. In addition, it appears that pirated versions of PlayStation 2 and Xbox discs are much more common on the market stalls throughout Shanghai, thanks to the high cost of the Xbox 360 relative to average Chinese wages.

Jordan Keeler, one of the snot-nosed morons (he takes it as a compliment) behind smashsomestuff.com created this oddly familiar tissue-dispensing alarm clock in honor of this blog. Thanks man. There's no clock display shown in this case mod pic, but he says the ring of light functions as a snooze button. Time to re-purpose that Core System, especially if you suffer from a runny nose.

Rumours of an autumn price cut for the Xbox 360 have resurfaced, with an unnamed source at a Taiwanese OEM component maker suggesting that production cost negotiations will lead to a US$100 retail price cut.
A new report on DigiTimes cites an unnamed OEM manufacturer, who claims that Microsoft has already negotiated production cost reductions with its suppliers, apparently in preparation for a price cut of up to US$100 ahead of the launch of PS3.
However, it should be noted that Microsoft is currently losing a significant amount of money on every Xbox 360 sold - and given the strong official denials of an imminent price cut, it seems more likely that component price reductions would be negotiated in an effort to reduce the firm's losses.
Indeed, only a couple of months ago Microsoft Europe boss Chris Lewis told our sister site Eurogamer TV that Sony had taken away any immediate pressure to slash the console price, due to the exceptionally high price point of the PlayStation 3.
Lewis' comments were backed up by UK head Neil Thompson, and further denials of an autumn price cut came in June, when John Porcaro, group manager of PR and communications for Microsoft US stated: "The official word from folks in the know is that there are currently no plans for a price drop this fall."
Whilst the DigiTimes report suggests that production costs for the console could be reduced by 15-20 per cent, industry watchers have suggested that a price cut before the end of the year is extremely unlikely.
Microsoft already has a competitive advantage over the PlayStation 3 at retail with its current price point - so the production cost reductions are likely nothing more than practical business sense as the platform holder increases unit production in preparation for the traditionally busy Christmas period.
However, it could equally be argued that revealing plans of a price-cut too soon could impact on current sales, as consumers hold back in preparation for a lower retail price point. As it stands, Microsoft remains firmly behind its previous denials of any shift in retail pricing before the end of the year.

Are you David O'Leary? Do you want a job? Okay, so it won't be a real one with real money, but provided you have a PS2, PC or Xbox 360 nicely accommodated into your lounge set-up, LMA Manager 2007 will give you an entertaining grasp of what you'll be missing over the next few months.
Codemasters has just released a Ronaldo-sized batch of screens and details regarding the popular footie management sim, which is out for PC, Xbox 360 and PS2 at the end of September. Apparently, we can expect free downloads for up-to-date stats from August onwards, a new game database engine, a 3D match section and 'the most realistic training system yet'.
In addition, the PC and Xbox 360 versions have swelled-up to include teams from over 50 countries, with the added bonus of organising overseas pre-season tours. According to the blurb, this will even descend as far as suffering the indignation of watching your drunk stars let off hotel fire extinguishers and "misbehave in bars across New Zealand, Japan and Korea'.
But it doesn't end with bar-room carnage, either; the PC and Xbox 360 versions will benefit from multi-threading technology to improve the pace of the game, plus give you the ability to watch 3D highlights from all games in your division. Further details can be found at the official site here.
In the meantime, run a swift rule over these screens in the countdown to kick-off.

As reported last week, IO Interactive, the developers behind the Hitman series and Freedom Fighters, has confirmed its new project Kane and Lynch: Dead Men, an 'intense action title' heading for PC and 360 next year.
The blurb from the Eidos marketing bods has it down as "a violent and chaotic journey of two men - a flawed mercenary and a medicated psychopath - and their brutal attitude towards right and wrong." And going by the Hitman titles, IO does 'flawed' hard guys to a tee.
Eidos also promise that the "volatile partnership" of its protagonists, combined with "innovative technologies allow for an unparalleled gaming experience". We're already excited by the impending violence, and have put a contract out for a few new, meatier details in the very near future.
David Bamberger, the title's US Marketing Manager, bigged it K&L with the following: "Using state-of-the-art technology, Kane and Lynch: Dead Men delivers a raw and compelling story-driven gaming experience not previously possible on current generation hardware. The power of the Xbox 360(TM) and Windows allows us to dive deeper into a world of disturbing realism." Wise words mate.

Release info
We've noticed lately that a few people are uploading Datel Xchange360 Format save files to our database. Since these images are not compatible with Xplorer360 we bring you XIC. This little tool will input Datel's .z36 images and convert them to Xplorer compatible .bin's.
Note: Xchange360 merely creates a full backup of your memory unit. The .z36 images are just that. Once converted and the image opened within Xplorer360 you may extract the needed files from the image and place them to your device or simply restore the .bin to your memory unit.

Microsoft Corp., the world's largest software maker, will not adjust prices of its Xbox 360 game console this year in response to the scheduled release of Sony Corp's PlayStation 3 in November.
Microsoft plans to cut the price of its most expensive Xbox 360 from $399 to $299, DigiTimes reported today, citing unidentified Taiwan suppliers. Microsoft denied the report, the Taipei-based newspaper said.
``Before the end of this year, we have no plans to cut the price of Xbox 360,'' Freda Lee, a spokeswoman for Microsoft in Taiwan, said in a telephone interview. ``There's no schedule yet'' for cutting prices.
Chairman Bill Gates said on May 9 that the Redmond, Washington-based company will sell 10 million of its next- generation consoles before Sony's PS3 goes on sale. The company sold 5 million of the game players by the end of June, Microsoft said in a presentation to investors on July 20.
Sony, based in Tokyo, will release its PS3 in Japan on Nov. 11 and in the U.S. and Europe on Nov. 17 at $499 for the cheapest version, compared with $299 for the least expensive XboX 360.

Portable video player and game device Microsoft Zune has everyone all atwitter since the Redmondians officially announced the brand last week, and now sleuths at Mobilewhack found a document posted at the FCC that shows what is said to be the approval of Zune, where in the document it's called Microsoft Presenter 3000.
A juicy detail: because of the frequency range mentioned in the document, Zune might include WiFi integration, specifically 802.11b. This follows our earlier reports of Microsoft's statement that "seven or eight wireless scenarios" could possibly end up in the upcoming line of players. This current FCC approval could mean that Zune could hit the streets much sooner than anticipated. More as the story unfolds.

July 26th, 2006, 18:23 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft wants to deliver a new game to Xbox Live Arcade every week - and believes it's possible, too.
"I can say we've certainly put enough games into the pipeline and it's certainly our target," Xbox Live Arcade worldwide games portfolio manager Ross Erickson told gaming blog Joystiq this week.
"I'm glad [Xbox Live Arcade] Wednesdays have kicked off. Barring unforeseen development issues from the developers themselves - our issue was to fill the pipeline with a lot of titles on the upfront because of the inevitable schedule delays we'll have - we'll still have enough queued up in our certification process we'll always be able to have something coming out once a week."
Microsoft has previously said it aims to have 160 games available for Xbox 360 by Christmas, and a significant number of those are likely to appear on Xbox Live Arcade - as many as 30 by the end of autumn.
"We certainly have enough games in the pipeline - more than enough, in fact - to achieve that goal on a weekly basis," Erickson told Joystiq.
One thing Microsoft won't be doing - at least not immediately - is allowing developers to make games that occupy more than 50MB of hard disk or memory-card space. "That's pillar number one," according to Erickson.
The idea is to allow Xbox 360 owners who do not own hard disks to store downloaded Live Arcade games on memory units, which allow for 64MB of data.
However, with PlayStation 3 in particular likely to allow for much larger downloadable games, Microsoft runs the risk of losing out on bigger releases despite the impressive momentum Live Arcade has already built up.
Erickson admits that the company is already considering the possibilities of larger memory units, but there's no word on hard-disk-only Live Arcade games or other digitally distributed titles - although it's important to note that the latter, which Microsoft is certainly considering, would fall outside his remit.
"Certainly those memory units are not available yet. And when they become available we'll re-evaluate," he says of Live Arcade's position.
"We're constantly evaluating this not on just the size of the memory unit available, but in terms of what the quality bar is that we're asking for from developers."
"At this time and for the foreseeable future we're sticking to our position that 50MBs is what defines an Arcade title so that portability between system and system can work and so that those users who do not have a hard drive, don't think there's many of them, but for those that don't have a storage solution for getting their games onto their system."
The Xbox Live Arcade Wednesdays schedule consists of Frogger, Cloning Clyde and Galaga (the latter released worldwide today), along with Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting (August 2) and Pac-Man (August 9).
Other games on the horizon include Texas Hold 'Em Poker, Sonic the Hedgehog from SEGA, Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers from The Behemoth and various others from the likes of Midway, Namco, Capcom and Microsoft's independent publishing and development partners.
Live Arcade games typically go on sale for 400 or 800 Microsoft points (GBP 3.40 / 6.80), although some - notably Bankshot Billiards - cost 1200 points (GBP 10.20). Free demo versions are available for all of them.

It's retro shoot-'em-up action all the way as MS unleash Galaga on Arcade Wednesday
Well, a couple of weeks ago Microsoft promised a raft of fresh Arcade classics appearing on its Live service every Wednesday and - lo and behold - today is Galaga day, when the ancient (well 1981) arcade shoot 'em-up makes its debut on Xbox Live Arcade.
Still nostalgia ain't what it used to be it seems, with our esteemed colleagues over at OXM.co.uk, taking a quick shufti at the game, deeming it very much a dog that has had its day when compared to modern wonders like Geometry Wars.
Still, if you absolutely can't live without a spot of Galaga to light up your Wednesday, or just want to bathe in a warm comforting glow of simplistic shoot-'em-up action, then Galaga will set you back a very reasonable sounding 400 Microsoft points.

Taiwan says Xbox 360 price crash on the cards - Microsoft says 'nope'
Rumours have swirled out of the Taiwanese OEM market this morning that Microsoft is planning a huge $100 price drop on the Xbox 360 this Christmas, as a direct response to the launch of Sony's PlayStation 3.
Microsoft Taiwan has apparently moved swiftly to scotch the rumours, with spokeswoman Freda Lee saying "We do not have plans to lower the price of the Xbox 360 before the end of the year." However, seasoned MS watchers should be taking both sides' statements with more than a pinch of salt. On the one hand, the OEM rumours would seem to be just that - rumours - as there's no way the Redmond giant would commit to any definitive price drop this early in the piece.
Yet on the other hand, MS Taiwan 'protests too much we think' to misquote the bard. It's more than conceivable, indeed some would say extremely likely, that MS will drop its Xbox 360 price in response to the Sony launch, especially in eastern markets where the 360 has failed to make significant inroads into the games-playing public's affections.
A 100 USD price drop would be an aggressive move on MS's part and it's often been noted that if you could buy a 360 and a Wii for the same price tag as the rather expensive PS3, that might just be enough to tip the balance for any wavering punters.
Whether it will have any implications over here in the West, we're not quite so sure - and with expected PS3 shortages around these parts, such a large and immediate price drop might not seem so clever. Still, expect some devious spoiler tactics from MS around November-time with price, bundles, Live and just about every other weapon MS can conceive of deployed to spoil the PS3 launch party this Christmas.

Eric Nylund, the man responsible for scribing Halo book, The Fall of Reach and providing the story and setting for massive 360 blaster Gears of War, has talked about his next project with Microsoft Game Studios, dubbing it "goose-bump worthy."
"What am I working on next?" Nylund asked, speaking to Team Xbox, "Well, if you took all the best parts of your favourite games, and smashed them together at light speed with your favourite movies and books, you'd get something close to this." Nylund then continued: "It's not announced yet, but as soon as Microsoft does, I can at least tell you the title, genre, and what particular thing makes this game goose-bump worthy. So stay tuned."
Excited words from the Gears of War scribe there, and we can't help but feel a little enthused by the prospect of a new game in the vein of Halo and Gears of War announcing imminently. When will we see it? Well, if Microsoft plans to unveil the game soon, we'd expect Leipzig Games Show next month or perhaps more likely X06 in September to be the time and the place.
We'll have more on this secret first-party game as it develops.

Jurors deliberated about six hours before returning its verdict against Troy Victorino, 29, and Michael Salas and Jerone Hunter, both 20.
Prosecutors said Victorino was angry with victim Erin Belanger, 22, who had him evicted when she found him living in her grandmother's home in Deltona. She kept some of his belongings, including some clothing and the video game system.
Victorino had no reaction as the verdict was read. Salas dropped his head as the first count was read.
During closing arguments, defense attorneys tried to shift the blame from their clients. Attorneys for Hunter and Salas said their clients were intimidated by the 6-foot-7-inch, 270-pound Victorino, and wouldn't have entered the house if they had not been threatened and coerced.

Three men have been accused of killing six people with baseball bats over a stolen Xbox console and some clothes, at least that's what CNN is reporting in a story they dub the "Xbox murder case." The jury began deliberating yesterday. If found guilty of first-degree murder, the men will face either life in prison or death by lethal injection.
We can't help but think that despite the "[stolen] Xbox game system and some clothing" being cited as the murder catalysts, heavy placement was put in connection to video games.
