A new version of MednafenX-NES, a NES Emulator for Xbox1, has been released:
This is a recompiled version of the latest mednafenx with a correction to a typo in the last release that disabled the ability to load custom palettes.
This version of mednafenx also includes the correct nes color palette. (this is enabled by default) You can always autogenerate your own palette or load your own palette. Included in this release is the old palette and the RGB palette. The RGB palette is colors that can be output by a svideo modded nes.

On April 15, in case you've forgotten, Bungie's second map pack for Halo 3 launches onto Xbox Live for download and the developer's taking us in deep in a new video.
In addition to featuring in-game footage of the levels, there's chat from designers and artists that have worked on the maps about design (funnily enough) and technical features. It's viewable in our video player.
Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack will set you back 800 Microsoft Points when it releases, and includes maps Avalanche, Blackout and Ghost Town.

I can now confirm the existence of the Xbox Wiimote clone project and I can tell you the project code name: "Newton"
The hardware is still being worked on and it might be a couple months before we see leaked shots of prototypes when they start to mass manufacture it but I am sure that there is an early software developer kit and prototype out there.
Microsoft is rumored to have licensed patents from Gyration and are using them to develop their motion sensing Wiimote controller. Legally Microsoft is not ripping off Nintendo but rather licensing the technology from the same place that Nintendo got it. For an example the Guitar Hero and Rockband controllers both use the same patent that is owned by Konami that they developed for Guitar Freaks.
From what I've learned from internal sources at Microsoft I can collaborate that the Newton project is moving forward and I can believe the time table that it has been in development for a while now and they could get it on the market by winter of 2008. The Newton is also going to use an LED sensor bar that can be powered by the USB ports on the 360, it is going to have an LED sensor on the front accelerometer and gyroscope sensor that can detect tilt and motion, rumble motors, wireless two way data communication with the 360, a built in Microphone for Xbox Live and voice-activated games.

Play.com is the first online retailer to reduce the hefty asking price for Rock Band and all three instruments.
Its deal cuts the Band in a Box instruments pack - containing drum, microphone and guitar peripherals - down by 30 pounds to GBP 99.99.
Play.com is also offering 10 pounds off the game price, bringing the cost of the entire package down to GBP 140.
However, separate peripherals are being sold at the recently recommended price of GBP 69.99 for the drums and GBP 59.99 for the wireless guitar.
Elsewhere retailers GAME and Gameplay are yet to list Rock Band on their sites. HMV, Gamestation and Amazon are offering the game for GBP 49.99, but haven't put a price on the instrument pack.
Rock Band will be released for Xbox 360 on 23rd May. PS3, PS2 and Wii versions will follow later this summer.

After one of us who shall remain nameless had to sing Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend" on a certain podcast as the result of a lost bet, we've learned not to doubt Jacob Metcalf. You may remember him as the first to report the Bungie/Microsoft split. He says he's once again tapped his inside sources to get more information about a motion controller reportedly under development at Microsoft, which he claims is codenamed "Newton."
Metcalf reports that the controller is fundamentally like the Wiimote in design, with a USB-powered sensor bar and "rumble motors, wireless two way data communication with the 360, a built in Microphone for Xbox Live and voice-activated games." It's sounds great, but, as Metcalf says, we hope it comes with a free USB hub. We're filling slots faster than our grandmother in Atlantic City.

Blu-ray may have won the next-gen DVD format war, but Microsoft is still supporting the Xbox 360's HD-DVD player with a new update.
According to Major Nelson, the update will improve compatibility with "certain titles" and offer "additional support for network features".
The update will be available via Xbox Live and, later this week, Xbox.com.

GameTap has finally gotten a chance to share the previously embargoed details of its recent hands-on time with Grand Theft Auto IV. The preview discusses four of the game's fifteen online modes: Team Deathmatch, GTA Race, Cops 'N Crooks (a Counter-Strike style team match) and Hangman's Noose (a co-operative escort mission).
Among the interesting details discussed (some of which have also been revealed elsewhere):
Previously rumored 16-player online play is confirmed.
The online maps aren't changed in any way from single-player -- you can still drive vehicles from one end of the city to the other, if you want.
There's no co-op option for the single-player missions, but many online modes allow for cooperation.
Ranked online matches earn players in-game cash for character customization. Higher difficulty means more cash.
Race mode can be played with or without weapons.
The volume of other characters voices will vary depending on their distance from you. "So if you hear an enemy's voice, he's probably right behind you and it's too late."
The most telling quote in the preview is Vice President of Game Development Geronimo Barrera's suggestion that "after players earn the cell phone in the single-player game (which takes about five minutes), if they want they can jump online and never even play the single-player again." With the extremely varied multiplayer options, we might just be taking him up on that.
Note: GameTap's servers are getting hit pretty hard, so the Read link may not load for a while.

On Monday, MTV News broke the story that Microsoft has been working on an Xbox 360 answer to the Wii remote since the summer. This story has provoked a lot of discussion and raised a lot of questions. How did we get these details? Why would Microsoft do this? Is this a late April Fools' Day hoax?
* You: Is this an April Fools' Day joke?
* MTV News: MTV News has been doing background reporting on this story for several months, but only recently felt the facts were solid enough to file a report.
* You: Isn't that just a sketch made in MS Paint? There's no way that's a real Microsoft development sketch. (See the sketch for yourself.)
* MTV News: Correct. Our primary development source (who isn't an artist) couldn't produce a photograph of Microsoft's controller prototype without potentially compromising his position and studio. MTV News instead asked him to produce a sketch, to give us an idea of what the prototype looked like, which he then produced in MS Paint.
* You: Is this story based on what just one person told you? What do they know?
* MTV News: Only one source was able to provide MTV News with a sketch. That source also provided MTV News with a project code name but didn't feel comfortable sharing the code name for fear it would identify him. That said, MTV News has been covering games in-depth for years, and reporter Patrick Klepek has more than 10 years' experience on the beat. The contacts gained during that time enabled us to confirm with at least two other high-level individuals in the gaming industry that Microsoft has been developing motion-controller prototypes, even if they hadn't seen this particular prototype firsthand. Other sources said they had heard rumors of varying degrees -- Rare's involvement, a Wiimote-like controller -- and didn't have firsthand knowledge, but their details supported our primary source's claims.

Eidos sends word that four new multiplayer maps are on the way for Kane & Lynch's multiplayer mode, Fragile Alliance. They're all absolutely free.
In case you've never played it before, the multiplayer mode has you playing as criminals in a heist. You're encouraged to work as a team until the very end, when back-stabbing your teammates at the right moment can help you get away with all the loot. It also gives your victim a chance for revenge when they respawn as a copper.
The 'Dope Bag' pack includes four maps each with a new back-stabby heist scenario; Clean Cut has you take on the local dope dealers and the Russian mafia at an LA construction site, 'Hooker's Trail' has you clash with the Yakuza in Tokyo, 'Flying High' takes place in the Venezuelan jungle and you're after the general's Havana gold in 'Hasta La Vista'.
"With Fragile Alliance we set out to offer gamers a new experience in co-op multiplayer, giving players the choice to work as a team or backstab their teammates and work for themselves at any moment," said Kim Krogh, lead designer. "The response to Fragile Alliance has been fantastic and these new maps will serve to grow the Fragile Alliance online community even further."
It's out on April 17 (that's Xbox Live and PSN).

With the scheduled release of Gears of War 2 less than eight months away, Epic games and Microsoft are slowly beginning to loosen the information valve on the highly-anticipated sequel, first at the Game Developers Conference in February and now in the most recent issue of Game Informer magazine, which has already reached some subscribers.
A few of those magnanimous folks were kind enough to share their impressions of GI's Gears 2 cover story on the NeoGaf forums today, and we dutifully formed our impressions of their impressions, which we shall impress upon you here.
According to the article, the basic gameplay of Gears will return in the sequel. The familiar sticky cover system will be back but slightly tweaked to make it harder to hit characters hiding behind stone walls, barricades or whatever else litters the battlefield.
Many of the first game's weapons will return, and active reloads will be back with minor (undisclosed) alterations. As many Gears watchers predicted, chainsaw duels will now be part of the experience, and a smattering of new weapons will be included, too. The article specifically mentions poison grenades (oh, the multiplayer possibilities) and something called a Gorgon burst pistol. If it's anywhere near as sweet as the Boltok pistol from the first game, we'll take three.
Much of the piece focuses on Gears of War 2's technical advances, which appear to be plentiful. Gamers who followed Epic's GDC appearance will be familiar with the terms "ambient occlusion" and "soft-body physics." Yes, they'll be included, as will hordes of independently animated on-screen enemies, advanced cinematic lighting and bumped-up water effects, all part of the new newest version of Unreal Engine 3.
The GI article is thin on multiplayer details, but the mag does confirm that a re-imagined version of the Gridlock map from the first game will be back. Co-op play will return and, in keeping with current trends, will allow players to drop-in and out of games dynamically. In a change from Gears of War, the sequel will allow each player to choose different difficulty levels in a co-op game, and those choices will affect each player's experience when the team splits up.
Gears 2 will also add a difficulty level at the low end of the scale that promises to make the sequel even more approachable for casual gamers, but the higher difficulty settings will remain "truly devastating," GI says.
We still don't know much about the sequel's storyline, which Epic promises will be more fleshed-out that its predecessor, which had something to do with Emergence Day, some dudes with guns and emulsion.
Delta Squad is split up when the sequel opens, and at least four new characters will be introduced as the story unfolds. Tai Kaliso is described as a spiritual warrior; Chairman Prescott is Hoffman's dictatorial boss; Dizzy is a Stranded soldier/truck driver; and Maria Santiago is the wife of Marcus Fenix's partner Dom, who embarks on a personal mission to save her in Gears of War 2.
The forced walking scenes that masked load times in the first game have also been replaced with a new system that is apparently more bearable than watching Marcus walk around with his finger in his ear while grunting at the disembodied voice of Anya. She'll play more of a role in the sequel, too, finally getting her face in the action as an image on a video screen.
There's still a lot we don't know about Gears of War 2. Will we fight the Locust Queen? Will the active-reload downing mechanism of the Longshot rifle return? Will multiplayer remain basically the same, or will Epic go for a wildly different setup? So far, CliffyB and crew aren't doling out those details.

Electronic Arts will be releasing the Xbox 360 version of Rock Band in Europe on 23rd May.
It will be a timed exclusive for Microsoft, with PS3, PS2 and Wii offerings to appear "later this summer".
(Update: EA has now clarified pricing details, too, having left them out of its original announcement. The instruments will be GBP 129.99 / EUR 169.99 with the game sold separately.)
Euro Rock Band will feature a selection of exclusive songs, as was rumoured in March. These include tracks from Oasis and Blur plus adopted German favourite Die Toten Hosen, which might mean "the trouser hose". But also might not.
We will get the full compliment of existing downloadable tracks on 27th May, too. This adds up to a meaty 70 songs, which you can get a load of over on the official site.
Going forwards, both European and American versions will be given fresh tracks at the same time each week.
The full list of Euro-exclusive songs can be found below.
English- "Beetlebum" by Blur
- "Rock 'n' Roll Star" by Oasis
- "Monsoon" by Tokio Hotel
- "Hysteria" by Muse
German- "Hier Kommt Alex" by Die Toten Hosen
- "Perfekte Welle" by Juli
- "Countdown to Insanity" by H-Block X
French- "Manu Chao" by Les Wampas
- "New Wave" by Playmo
EA is hosting an event today to showcase the game to the European press, so hopefully we'll have more on the announcement soon.

If everything goes according to plan, Microsoft's response to Nintendo's Wii will appear before the end of the year, a developer who has been briefed on the project told MTV News. The Xbox 360 manufacturer has been working on its own version of the motion-controlled Wii remote since last summer, the developer said.
While nothing has been officially announced, MTV News' source was able to provide us with details on one such 360 controller in the making: a controller designed to do all the Wii remote does, and more. Our source chose to remain anonymous in the interest of not compromising business relationships, but MTV News has confirmed Microsoft's active interest in developing a motion-sensitive controller with other industry sources.
The project has been in active development at Microsoft since last August, the source said. Rare, the Microsoft-owned studio behind Xbox 360's launch first-person shooter "Perfect Dark Zero" and the upcoming installment of the "Banjo-Kazooie" franchise, has been tasked with creating a unified interface and look for the controller. Rare has had trouble hitting its deadlines, according to the source.
Our development source sketched out a reproduction of the last prototype he'd seen, although the final product -- if it is indeed released -- may vary from this design. A key difference between the Wii remote and the prototype is the lack of a companion controller to be placed in the other hand, like Wii's Nunchuck.
Rare's difficulty in hitting development milestones has produced problems, however. "Microsoft is trying to decide how to get something out by the end of the year," said MTV News' source.

The Japanese arcade hit Ikaruga receives the full Xbox Live Arcade treatment and is poised to launch on the platform this Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at 9:00 a.m. GMT (1:00 a.m. PDT).
Ikaruga is a fast-paced scrolling shooter with a twist - players must constantly switch their ship's polarity to maximize their damage output and avoid incoming enemy fire of the opposite polarity.
Ikaruga on Xbox Live Arcade features a two-player co-op mode both locally and over Xbox Live. Newcomers can also easily bring their skill up to speed by using the game's slow motion training mode.
Ikaruga is a perfect combination of beautiful, manga-style storytelling and challenging arcade heroics, all brought to life in a gorgeous HD environment.
Gamers itching to obtain a moment of Ikaruga glory will be wise to master the chaining system that detects when enemies of the same polarity are destroyed consecutively. Doing so will reward players with huge score bonuses, which will be key to topping Ikaruga's leaderboards.
The ability to relive a particularly harrowing battle is also possible thanks to the game's record and replay function, which is new to the Xbox Live Arcade version of the game.
From the Japanese developer Treasure, Ikaruga will be available worldwide for 800 Microsoft Points and is rated E for Everyone by the ESRB.

Microsoft plans to release fresh downloadable content for Lost Odyssey in Japan on 10th April.
It'll involve travelling to a secret underwater research facility in your Nautilus ship, according to Watch Impress, and will cost 400 Points (GBP 3.40 / EUR 4.80).
Judging by a rough translation, the content opens up on disc four and sees you puzzling your way through the facility while fighting things like fish monsters.
The lure for doing all this is an accessory that teaches you a powerful ability. You will need to amass 999 skill points while wearing it to learn the skill, which appears to be something to do with lowering MP consumption to zero.
Microsoft has been contacted for comment.

Epic Games boss Mark Rein has assured those eagerly awaiting the Xbox 360 version of Unreal Tournament 3 that it's looking good and will be playable soon.
In a post on the Epic forums he wrote, "We don’t have a particular release date yet but we’re going to be playing it with some members of the press in two weeks at Midway’s next Gamers Day in Las Vegas.
"Should be fun," Rein added. "The game is coming along really nicely."
The PS3 version of UT3 was released last year on PC, and in February on PS3. Speaking to Eurogamer back in November Rein said the delay to the Xbox 360 game was due to an issue with mods. He explained, "We can release any mods we want on PS3 because it's an open system, whereas Xbox Live is a closed system."

Microsoft has rubbished an Australian retail chain survey that claims that the Xbox 360 is "dead" at retail Down Under.
The survey - conducted by Australian ChannelNews - of ten retail chains "who operate more than 2,000 stores" across the country, claims that retail support for the 360 is sliding as the PS3 and Wii sees growth in the country.
"The Xbox 360 is dead," a Melbourne-based retailer is reported as saying in the survey. "We are stocking it because of our relationship with Microsoft however all our energy and marketing is going into the PS3 and the Nintendo Wii unless Microsoft come up with something new or additional marketing dollars. Halo 3 was big on the Xbox but that was about it.
"They have tried discounting and value add offers and even that is not working. We are even thinking of dumping the console all together."
Harsh words, but expectedly Microsoft's Australian outfit has been swift in rubbishing the survey: "Our retailers are excited about our current and upcoming offers, and we're looking forward to another bumper year," said PR Manager Mariana Cidade, in a statement to ITWire.
"We are happy with where we are in the market right now. We're significantly ahead of where we planned to be this financial year, and selling well both on the software and hardware side.
"We have a great line-up of games coming up," the spokesperson added, addressing the survey's main concern, games.
"For core gamers we have titles like Gears of War 2, Fable 2, Too Human, Halo Wars etc, while casual or potential gamers will enjoy the likes of Banjo Kazooie, Guitar Hero 4, Rock Band and Dance Dance Revolution, as well as a number of other really exciting titles we haven't announced yet."
Surely they should wait for GTA IV to come out before condemning it to death?
