Uh-oh -- it looks like the nasty Windows Home Server bug that corrupts data affects quite a few more apps than Microsoft initially let on. The company's just updated the WHS support note to include reports of data corruption when using iTunes, the Zune software, WinAmp, WMP 11, Photoshop, and a host of other applications -- and the problem's expanded in scope as well, now affecting files saved to the server in addition to files edited on the server. That basically makes WHS useless as of right now -- if you can't trust your data on it, there's no point -- so let's hope there's a fix on the way.

Peter Molyneux would prefer hard disk as standard, but low-cost consoles a must
Peter Molyneux has said that while he would prefer to have a hard disk to work with as standard, he believes that backing low-price console hardware is "really important".
"Given the choice, I'd obviously choose a hard drive every day of the week," he told Eurogamer.net in an interview published today. "But the balance to that is you're supporting a system which is an awful lot cheaper.
"What I'm trying to address with Fable 2 is say 'Look, anybody can play this game.' That's what I really want. So supporting the cheaper price is really important."
Molyneux's Lionhead Studios was bought by Microsoft in 2006, and is currently working on action-RPG Fable 2, which was given centre stage in Microsoft's GDC keynote.
The game - which is designed to be accessible as well as rewarding for core players - will be among the first to benefit from a shared reward system that allows certain Xbox Live Arcade games to hand out virtual currency that can be spent in the world of Fable 2.
"I think it was my seed of an idea... Was it my idea? I don't know. It was a cumulative effort really," he told Eurogamer when asked about how this came about.
His colleague in the demonstration added that he remembered it as having been Molyneux's idea "to start talking about how we could use the infrastructure".
"Yes, then they went off and designed the games," added Molyneux.

I wrote a article about alternatives to the current format, mainly Digital Distribution. I explain what the best codecs are and where they are available, and also what programs can be used to convert your collection to the format. I also clear up some myths about Digital Distribution, and point people in the right direction. Mainly, consoles are leading the way with Digital Video Distribution, the Xbox 360 using WMV HD, and the PS3 using DivX HD.
The article is pretty long so it would be useless to try and post it here, since it would take up a majority of the front page.
So heres the article:

In what could only be considered as good news for the franchise's cult following, Microsoft and Epic Games have announced their intention to give Gears of War another go. Despite only scraping by with a couple of million units sold, Microsoft is determined to help the motley bunch of macho marines break into the niche shooter market with an Xbox 360 sequel, Gears of War 2.
The game was officially announced by Epic's CliffyB during Microsoft's GDC keynote entitled, "A Future Wide Open: Unleashing the Creative Commnunity ... and then give them Chainsaws." The game will be coming exclusively to the Xbox 360 in November, 2008. We'll bring you more information as soon as we can get it.

At Microsoft's GDC 2008 keynote address, the company announced a "community arcade" allowing user-created games to be distributed to Xbox 360 owners worldwide. "Now, 10 million people on Xbox Live get to play your game," said Microsoft Game Developer Group General Manager Chris Satchell. Free trials of these community created games should be available on Xbox Live "immediately" according to Satchell.
"For the first time, community games will be distributed through Xbox Live," Satchell said. "'Xbox Live Community Games will give creators a huge audience to share their creativity with. Game distribution will be democratized, allowing the community to control the content. Create, Submit, Peer Review, Play are the four key steps ... We want creativity to flow through this pipeline.
Users will be able to upload games using a Gamertag-like "creator identity" which will keep track of your game creation history. Creators can use descriptive sliders to describe a game's content, and peer reviewers can also evaluate the content for appropriateness.
At the keynote, Satchell showed off a short demo of user-created game Jellycar (pictured below), featuring an adorable bouncy, 2D car that drives along on a sketchpad, bouncing up and down on a cartoon road.

John Schappert believes that the Microsoft console delivers a superior experience
"Games sell better on the Xbox 360 because they simply play better on Xbox 360."
That's the bold claim of John Schappert, Microsoft's corporate vice president of Live, Software and Services for the Interactive Entertainment Business, during his keynote presentation at this year's Game Developers Conference in the Moscone Center, San Francisco.
Schappert, who cited rating aggregation site, Metacritic, believed that the Xbox 360 has more titles rated 80, 90 or above that the other main consoles put together - and this is having a significant impact on software sales.
In addition he heralded the community aspects of the platform: "We've got the best development tools and the best online service. You can simply do more on our platform," he said.
He also revealed that Xbox 360 users have now unlocked over 1 billion Achievements, and that the Halo 3 community was uploading around 100,000 pieces of content every day to the service.
Schappert's keynote is one of the focal points of this year's GDC, and we'll have more from the session in due course.

Dream Build Play competition yields 200 entries, four people hired as a result
Microsoft's open development platform, XNA Game Studio, has now hit 800,000 downloads since it was first launched 18 months ago.
In addition Microsoft is now working with over 400 universities using the software, which is designed for creating basic games quickly and effectively.
Chris Satchell, on stage during the Microsoft keynote at this year's Game Developers Conference, stated his belief that the company had "revolutionised the industry by democratising development," and the numbers of downloads pointed to "a lot of creativity and passion that we've tapped into out there."
The Dream Build Play competition, which ran last year to promote use of the XNA platform, yielded over 200 game entries, and although only one was supposed to result in an Xbox Live Arcade title, the company decided to hire four people instead.
One of those people, James Silva, demonstrated his game - a 2D hack-n-slash called Dishwasher - to the assembled audience at the conference session.
Community-designed games will be made available for free for the first time this year via the Xbox Live service.

Looks like games are coming for the Zune after all! Microsoft just announed XNA Studio developers will be able to use the Zune as a multiplayer wireless mobile gaming platform! Details are sparse at this point, but it looks like it's going to be second gen Zunes only, since it was specifically mentioned that it'd take use of the touchpad controls. We'll let you know more as we get it.

Thanks to an anonymous tipster, we have early word on what might be an upcoming price drop for the Canadian Xbox 360. The above phonecam photo comes from a FutureShop Canada employee, who says he was "quite surprised" to find a $50 price drop for the Xbox 360 Pro Console advertised right on the front page of next week's advertising fliers. Our source also tells us that the inside of the flier trumpets a $50 price drop for the XBox 360 Elite (to $449), an offer which allegedly includes a free copy of Turok.
Both price drops should be effective Friday, if this rumor proves true, and while we have no way of confirming this information as of yet, we have no explicit reason to doubt it either. Regardless, if you're a Canadian looking to buy an Xbox 360, it couldn't hurt to wait a couple of days to see if you can save a bit of green, er, funny multicolored money.

Research firm underlines Xbox Live's delivery potential
Market research and consulting firm DFC Intelligence has told GamesIndustry.biz that it believes Microsoft will be largely untroubled by the recent death of the HD DVD format and resulting victory for Sony's Blu-ray technology.
George T Chronis, DFC Dossier editor, pointed at comments made by Microsoft chairman Bill Gates in October 2005 regarding the next-gen DVD battle:
"The format that's under discussion right now, HD DVD versus Blu-ray, that's simply the last physical format we'll ever have," Gates said then.
"Even videos in the future will either be on a disk in your pocket or over the Internet and therefore far more convenient for you."
And Chronis believes that the company is still on course to exploit it's existing strengths via the Xbox 360 platform.
"Microsoft has never been wedded to any specific HD disc playback as an Xbox 360 feature necessity, only as an option," he said.
"Therefore, given the 10 million-plus Xbox Live subscriber base, it is very likely that Microsoft will continue to actively pursue more deals with major media conglomerates to secure additional HD content for delivery via Xbox Live as its primary high-definition playback."
That echoes comments made in a GamesIndustry.biz interview yesterday with the UK's Xbox Live marketing manager, Robin Burrowes, talking about the performance of the Video Store in the UK.
"There's been a lot of partner satisfaction with where we are so far - I know that Warner are very happy with the performance, and hopefully that's something we'll bring forward with having Paramount on board as well."
Chronis agreed that the Blu-ray emergence would have a positive effect on PlayStation 3 sales, but questioned whether consumers who had purchased the console to-date had done so for the HD playback options.
"The jury is still out on how many PlayStation 3s are purchased by consumers with Blu-ray playback as the primary feature motivating the sale," he explained.
"More likely, high-definition playback has been a secondary feature in the overall purchase decision. Consumers don't want to be left with a dead HD format, so it's safe to say someone buying a PS3 during the first year was considering the strength of the Blu-ray format as a value component in the PlayStation 3's higher MSRP.
"But we don't think the fortunes of the Blu-ray format have driven the vast majority of PS3 sales. Sony brand loyalty, and new technology early adopters, probably drove the most system sales."

We've always heard that there's no need in regretting, and apparently, Toshiba is following said mantra after the collapse of its beloved high-definition movie format. In an interview with TechRadar, Toshiba's deputy general manager of HD DVD Olivier Van Wynendaele stated that it "wouldn't change anything that it did," and continued on to say that "circumstances saw to it that [Toshiba] had to make the decision not to continue, but that doesn't mean [the company] did anything wrong." Just in case you couldn't already sense the inability to swallow one's pride, Mr. Van Wynendaele also proclaimed that its format was "a finished standard, unlike Blu-ray," and concluded by noting that HD DVD was still "better than Blu-ray." Maybe he really didn't get the memo?

Doesn't look like there's going to be any glory in death for HD DVD -- we've just received confirmation that GameStop is no longer accepting HD DVD movies as trade-ins, and several GameStops have apparently already stopped taking the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive as well. We're also hearing that the 360 HD DVD drive will no longer be accepted at any GameStop as of tomorrow, and that there's a major price cut in the works -- which makes sense, but we'll see what happens. For now, though, it looks like HD DVD fans jumping ship may have to resort to eBay -- or start peddling discs out the back of their cars.

It's not like there has been any shortage of deals on HD DVD hardware over the past few months or anything, but now that Toshiba (and almost everyone else on the planet) has officially yanked support for the format, prices are beginning to plummet en masse. First on the docket is the HD-A3 at Circuit City, which now sits at just $99.99 and comes with seven free titles, two of which are 300 and Bourne Identity. So yeah, if you've been waiting for this moment to snap up the failed format for cheap, hop on in -- but if we were betting souls, we'd say holding out just a wee bit longer would actually be in your wallet's best interest.

There's been no lack of guessing at what Microsoft will reveal in its GDC keynote this evening, but Microsoft has finally offered us a hint, and it's "asynchronous play". Hmmm.
Speaking at the conference's Casual Games Summit, general manager of Microsoft's casual-games program, Chris Early, strongly hinted that an announcement regarding gameplay between mobile platforms, PC and Xbox 360 will be made in tonight.
"If you like that sort of thing, I would strongly recommend you go to Microsoft's keynote opening GDC, where you'll see a little bit of this announced for the first time," he said, adding "I think I've kept it vague enough not to get into trouble.
"I can't wait for this bridge to happen between hardcore and casual games, especially when they're separated in time," he continued. "I'd love to stand in line at the bank and play that BioShock flow game. Then come home and say, 'Ha! Take that!' I'd love to take that good casual game I played home and have that be successful there as well."
Live Anywhere was first touted back at E3 2006 (when it was keeping it real with fat Americans and booth babes) by Bill Gates himself. Microsoft's demo showed impress Live functionality between PC, Xbox 360 and Mobile devices, including sharing of Achievements and friends lists.
John Schappert's keynote (he's Microsoft's Corporate Vice President) is due to go down at 6:30pm GMT, where he'll hopefully - finally - tell us what games are actually coming out on Xbox 360 this year.
As much as Live Anywhere sounds cool, we'd rather see some Banjo-Kazooie footage, please.

SEGA has pushed the Xbox 360 version of Universe at War back to 28th March.
We had previously been expecting it on 8th March, and will now have to twiddle out real-time strategy thumbs for a little longer.
Universe at War: Earth Assault was released earlier this year to a decent reception. But, frustratingly, developer Petroglyph could have pushed it up to the unmissable category with barely any extra work.

Finally, HD DVD users now have the empirical evidence they've been looking for to prove that the universe really is conspiring against them. We figured we'd make ourselves useful over here and give you a list of things you can do with your poor, obsolete HD DVD player -- starting with taking it out to dinner, excusing yourself to the bathroom before the check comes... then getting the hell out of there.
Gimmes
eBay
Doorstop
Entertainment center cup-holder
Destroy it. Office Space style.
Oh, the humanity
Mail it to the office of Howard Stringer in protest of Blu-ray's victory.
Plug it into your clothes dryer's 240-volt outlet. Woops, honey! My bad, guess we have to buy a Blu-ray player now.
Finally, replace your Betamax player.
Buy the Blu-ray player of your choice, put it in the box, attempt to return it as "defective."
Channel it through Whoopi Goldberg and make some pottery with it.
Put a Blu-ray disc in the tray and then call up Toshiba when it doesn't work. Repeatedly.
Put it in a time capsule, just to confuse future generations.
Buy a few dozen of 'em and build a little hut for your Blu-ray player.
Lock it alone in a room with a few lethal weapons... let it die honorably.
Use it to upscale DVDs, which is all you ever used it for anyways.
Of course, feel free to leave your own suggestions in comments.

via Games Industry
The UK's Xbox Live Video Store, launched last December, has been performing "above expectations" since then, and Microsoft internal indications are that the high definition content on offer is more popular than the standard definition content.
That's according to the UK Xbox Live marketing manager, Robin Burrowes, talking to GamesIndustry.biz in an interview today.
"It's been performing very well indeed. We're just two months into the life cycle from a UK point of view, and from indicators we're already beginning to receive, firstly we're performing above expectations, secondly we're very much skewing towards HD content - which is something we thought would happen, but we're actually surprised by the extent of it - and thirdly we're very much veering towards the newer of the titles that we've had on board so far," he explained.
"Titles like 300, Ocean's 13, TMNT and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - they've done particularly well in terms of amounts of downloads."
Additionally the company's launch partner for the film content, Warner Bros, is said to be pleased with the performance so far - something which he hopes will be boosted with the announcement made yesterday that Paramount is also now on board.
Burrowes believes that the company has hit the nail on the head in terms of price points, and stated that while Microsoft would like to look at offering additional rental options in the future, he believed that the existing format was working well.
However, when asked about the possibility of offering full priced games for download via Xbox Live, he was quick to answer: "No, no plans."
Microsoft's Xbox Live Video Store is generally seen as a potential alternative to the Blu-ray vs HD DVD war that ended this morning, and while the company plays down talk of a pure digital distribution future, increasing broadband speeds could bring it a step closer to reality.
The full interview with Robin Burrowes is available on GamesIndustry.biz now.

If a hit computer game can turn into a hit collectible card game, then why can't a hit CCG become a hit computer game? That seems to be the thinking behind today's announcement that Wizards of the Coast has licensed video game use of its Magic: The Gathering IP to Stainless Games (which will make Xbox Live and PC versions) and Mind Control Software (which will make a Mac edition).
Today's bare-bones announcement includes absolutely no information about how the license will be used or what form the games will take, but it's probably safe to say they won't be direct conversions of the popular card game (WotC's Magic: The Gathering Online already fills that role quite well). More likely, the games will probably follow Acclaim and Atari's leads in using characters and locations from the card game for a new type of experience. We can only pray that these newest efforts will improve on those somewhat disastrous past efforts, because the Magic Universe definitely contains a lot of potential for a good video game.

An enigma awaits GDC attendees who waltz into the Moscone Center's North Hall, the current home of Microsoft's XNA display. Placed amongst the various screens and demo stations running independent, XNA-powered Xbox 360 games is a sheet bathed in purple lights and mystery. "Coming Soon! Wednesday February 20 11:30AM" declares a nearby sign.
If the sign is to be believed (it seemed friendly enough), something is set to be unveiled at the conclusion of John Schappert's keynote, "A Future Wide Open: Unleashing the Creative Community." If that's what lies beneath the sheet, it's fair to say that a future wide open is a lot smaller than we imagined it to be. Maybe you have a better idea*?
