Funcom has responded to reports that its MMO Age of Conan on Xbox 360 will be out 12 months after the PC version, calling the time period a "rough estimate".
"We can't commit to a specific date", product manager Erling Ellingsen told us on the back of reports of the potential date coming out of GDC last week. "It might be sooner, it might be later."
All Funcom can say at this moment in time is that the Xbox 360 version will ship after the PC iteration, Ellingsen added - which we knew anyway.
On PC, Age of Conan is out on May 20. The game's caused ripples in the MMO community with its implementation of action-adventure style real-time combat.
Originally it was due out toward the end of last year, but Funcom held it up mainly to fine tune the combat system.
You can read about the alterations its made, and more, in this recent hands-on.

The ESRB has long been fertile ground for unofficial game announcements as publishers submit games for review before revealing them to the public. This month was no exception as the updates to the ratings board's database have revealed a trio of new games that look headed for the Xbox Live Arcade.
Wits and Wagers from Hidden Path Entertainment has been given an "E" for Everyone rating. Though no official details have been revealed, there is a trivia board game by the same name that involves, as the name implies, answering questions and betting on answers.
Assault Heroes 2, a sequel to another XBLA game by Vivendi, has been given a "T" for Teen rating due to animated blood and violence. The first in the series was a top-down co-operative shooter and developed by Wanako Games.
The last new game to appear on the list is Mr. Driller Online, from Namco Bandai. Unsurprisingly, it has been given an "E" rating. Mr. Driller is a popular puzzle series that has appeared on numerous platforms in the past including PlayStation, Dreamcast and Nintendo DS.

Following the recent yielding of Toshiba's Hd DVD format to Sony's Blu-ray, Microsoft announced that it would be discontinuing production of the HD DVD-format games for its console, the Xbox 360.
The announcement also revealed that the company will be slashing the price of existing stocks in half.
"From tomorrow, we will cut the prices to $49 and will not make any more of the HD DVD players," said Grace Chou, spokesman of the Taipei branch of Microsoft, based on Redmond, Washington.
According to Bloomberg, Microsoft, whose console normally ran on DVD format, only recently released hardware that allowed players to play games on HD DVD format. Before cutting the player's price in half, it cost users $119.
Additionally, the company announced that the warranties availed by those who own the console would still be available.
"HD DVD is one of the several ways we offer a high definition experience to consumers," said Blair Westlake, VP of the media and entertainment group, "and we will continue to give consumers the choice to enjoy digital distribution of high definition movies and TV shows directly to their living room, along with playback of the DVD movies they already own."
CNet News reported that Microsoft, in making the announcement, joined a line of companies that have publicly dropped the HD DVD format, opting instead for the Blu-ray. Other companies included Intel, NEC, and HD DVD's backer Toshiba.
Several stores, such as Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and major movie retail stores have also opted to replace HD DVD format movies with Blu-ray. Many have started clearance sales for their stocks of the HD DVD, as well as the format's players.
There is still no word on whether or not, like its rival Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft would produce Xbox 360 consoles that would be supporting the Blu-ray format.

Oh dear. From the sound of this, Xbox World 360’s upcoming story on GoldenEye for XBLA is a bit… shit.
“The story in Xbox World 360 is based entirely on rumour and speculation,” said a spokesperson for Microsoft Games Studios. “Unfortunately, we were never contacted by the publication to confirm information or participate in the story in any way, as we would have confirmed that we do not have the necessary rights to release GoldenEye on Xbox Live Arcade.”
Xbox World 360, a UK mag, had said previously that “you’ll find the first ever shots and definitive hands-on details behind one of this year’s biggest stories. Yep, it’s the story the whole world wanted, but only we got - and we unleash it next Wednesday in Xbox World 360.”
We think we should just start calling this sort of thing “GameProing,” as in “Xbox World’s GamePro’d GoldenEye XBLA.” Or maybe not.

With the news that the 70 percent royalties cut for independent developers of Xbox Live Arcade titles had been cut in half, the indie gaming community was irrevocably up in arms, with some XBLA devs even threatening to switch platforms. However, the reasoning behind the cut is not as cut-and-dry as "M$ jus wants moar money" -- according to a recent GameSetWatch report, a number of factors led to the royalty shrinkage.
After a bit of Michael Clayton-esque fact finding, they discovered that the cut only affects first-party indie developers (that is, devs that publish their games directly through Microsoft's XBLA department), and while the returns from their product will indeed be half their original value, Microsoft will now cover many of the fees that the developer must address before their product can be sold -- such as ESRB certification, and localization. Ultimately, this means that their games will cost less to produce, but make less after retail -- slightly better than a flat-out cut, but not much consolation to the Ramen-fueled indie developer.

While many stores are slashing down HD DVD player prices as much as management will allow, it seems that one diehard supporter is casting a blind eye to the whole format war meltdown. Rock -- which tooted its own horn after making HD DVD standard on many of its laptops -- hasn't changed its approach one iota. Even now, the firm is still offering up internal HD DVD drives (and writers) in a plethora of its machines, and curiously enough, there's not even an option to select a Blu-ray or combo player. C'mon Rock, we know you're just trying to clear out inventory, but at least give prospective buyers a choice in the matter, would ya?

Andy Pennell goes a bit into the history of HD DVD and what Microsoft had done. It's a really intresting read, Microsoft had a bigger hand in the format war then we were lead to belive last month. Notice how on the CES 2008 portion of the timeline Andy notes:
Jan 2008: CES 2008 turns into an unhappy experience for HD DVD, starting the day after the Warner bombshell. Cool demos never see the light of day and everyone is pretty shell-shocked. Could the Xbox 360 Ultimate be included in this category?
Find out why Microsoft could have easily put a HD DVD drive into the Xbox 360 from the start, Why Microsoft and Toshiba employees laughed at the first Blu Ray player released, and why Andy's license plate is HD DVD! By clicking here and here
What are your thoughts?
Oh for those who don't know: Andy Penells blog was the go to place when it came to the latest news in Microsoft's work with the HD DVD add on. He had the latest firmware specs (THe only place to get them), and a in depth look at the code work it would have involved, it was a very intresting read until a week ago.

Japanese electronics retailer Edion has instituted a take-back program for its customers who purchased HD DVD players, offering to replace the units with Blu-ray players. That is true class.
Throughout March, customers can return any of seven Toshiba HD DVD decks and swap them for a BD unit from Sony, Panasonic or Sharp. If the latter is more expensive, customers need to make up the balance, but if it’s cheaper they’ll actually get a refund of the difference.

You may have come to this conclusion when you saw the debut trailer for Gears of War 2, but Variety blogger Ben Fritz is claiming that the hot, chainsaw-on-chainsaw action featured in the preview wasn't just a stylish cutscene -- it's also going to be a gameplay mechanic in the uber-anticipated sequel. Fritz apparently spoke to people who are "close enough to the development team at Epic to know" that chainsaw wielders will now be able to repel, and possibly counter, each other's attacks.
Epic hasn't confirmed this, but given the feature's appearance in the trailer, and the frequent complaints about an "unbalanced" chainsaw combat system in the first Gears of War, we think it's safe to assume we'll be spending many long winter nights playing Lumberjack Bushido Blade when the game drops this November.

Some rumors never die, and this one we heard even before the official Warner press release was issued. Now that the format war is officially over, newspapers and magazines everywhere are looking back on the events preceding Toshiba's announcement. While no one really knows why each studio made its decision, The Globe and Mail cites "analysts" who think the payoff was a factor. Well, we asked Warner point blank about the payoff rumor and Kevin Tsujihara, president, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group said that it "was not a bidding war" and that it really came down to Q4 sales. This answer leaves us with the impression that while some money probably changed hands, the real reason why Warner went Blu was because during all of 2007 the Blu-ray versions of Warner's titles always outsold the HD DVD. The bottom line is that regardless of any single payoff, since Warner owns most of the home media market, it had the most to lose if it waited too long to chose a format.

Shmupcrafters Warashi have updated their website to indicate that the arcade to Dreamcast to Xbox Live Arcade translation of Triggerheart Exelica will be hitting Xbox Live Arcade this Wednesday! Triggerheart is about humanoid weapons systems that just so happen to resemble cute anime girls, fighting to save humanity from the Ver'mith. You're good, they're bad, shoot them. Both ships have different weapons but both have the power to perform an anchor shot, snagging enemies to use as a weapon or shield. Not sure I am ready for this yet, as Omega Five is still kicking my ass on a regular basis, but I suppose when it comes to shmups, the more the merrier! The only problem? While it will definitely be out in Japan next Wednesday for 800 points, I am seeing now official word on other regions, though Xbox.com did just add a page for the game. Fingers crossed!

We had a few minutes yesterday to play a bit of shoot-em-up Zurai, that fast little game shown during the Microsoft keynote. The game plays surprisingly well. The ship constantly fires and you move it around with the Zune's touch pad. To fire off bombs you click the pad. Unfortunately, the game was developed specifically for the keynote, so it's not clear if it will ever actually see the light of day.

Kotaku found this InterSense technology demo down at the Game Developers Conference, which seems to do what Nintendo and LucasArts will not: a 1 to 1 mapping of a gesture controller to a lightsaber on screen. These guys are more of a technology company rather than a peripheral company like Novint, so they're aiming at getting a volume deal with a console manufacturer like Microsoft or Sony to bundle their tech into controllers.

Remember that blip on the Xbox Live this week that said a Ninja Gaiden 2 Demo was coming soon? The "demo" has now gone live, and we hate to break it to you, folks, but it turns out that demo really means "video of someone playing the demo." Yep, we're disappointed, too, and a bit angry at the misleading title -- by convention, demo in the gaming world tends to be interactive. (Unless, of course, the game really is just us watching someone else play the game.) Creator Tomonobu Itagaki did assure that a demo is coming "at some point." Ninja Gaiden 2 is out for blood June 3.
