It couldn't last forever. Now those free, laser-etched designs of the Zune Originals series will cost ya. Microsoft quietly made the switch sometime over the last few weeks (if not the weekend) according to forum jockeys riding the Zuneboards. The Tattoo Series is now $10 or $15 for the Artist Series. Custom engravings are still free. Of course, there's no better way to keep those Zunes original than to charge cold, cash money for off-the-shelf designs.

Microsoft has taken nearly half of 'to date' current-gen revenue across console, game and peripheral sales, the company has boasted.
The boast made to trade mag MCV comes alongside Microsoft's other big news this morning; its 17.7 million Xbox 360s sold worldwide and the European price cut - which brings the console's tag down to less than a Wii.
"We had to reach and surpass key milestones [before we dropped 360's UK price]. We had to get to let a level of momentum that we've now achieved," Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Europe VP, Chris Lewis told MCV.
"We've taken 42 per cent revenue share of next gen-games market - including hardware, peripherals and software, as well as the stunning performance of Live." To be fair, the 360 has had a rather large head start.
Microsoft also claims it has the highest attach rate of any current-gen console, with seven games sold on average per Xbox 360.
"We're consistently attaching games at high level," added Lewis, "we're now at north of seven games to every console. That's considerably more than our competitors and something we're immensely proud of.
"On top of that, we've worked our way to a 17.7 million units worldwide installed base - and Europe is a critical geography within that figure. The ability to continually drive cost through the console is what has allowed us to open up the price of the system now."
The Xbox 360 is now retailing for £199.99 in Europe, with the Arcade pack down to £159.99. We'll be watching GTA IV format sales with great interest...

Following Microsoft's decision to drop the price of the Xbox 360 in Europe, analyst Michael Pachter has told GamesIndustry.biz that he expects sales to increase by around 20 per cent over the coming months.
However, in the long term, he doesn't see it making a larger impact to Microsoft's standing in the region, as Sony is also likely to cut the price of the PlayStation 3 at some point later this year.
"Price elasticity of demand is an economic concept that says demand goes up as price comes down. I would imagine that demand will increase by 20 per cent or so, and we'll see sales increase by this amount over the next few months," offered Pachter.
"If the price cut were in a vacuum, I suppose it would make a difference, but it's likely Sony will match the cut sometime later this year," he said.
He also echoed comments made to GamesIndustry.biz by The simExchange's Jesse Divnich, that the timing of Microsoft's price cut is partly due to the failure of the HD-DVD format, and consumer perception that the PlayStation 3 now seems a better value machine with its integrated Blu-ray technology.
"I'm sure it is more than coincidence that Microsoft cut price just after Sony won the Blu-ray/HD-DVD battle," he said.
"Sony definitely gained in the eyes of consumers, who suddenly see the premium for the PlayStation 3 as having some value, and I think Microsoft decided to widen the gap between the two consoles."

via Eurogamer
Microsoft will officially lower the prices of all its Xbox 360 units in Europe from 14th March.
The biggest saving will be made on the Premium unit, which drops by GBP 50 down to GBP 199.99.
Elsewhere the Arcade model will become the cheapest new-generation model at GBP 159.99, while the Elite will fall to GBP 259.99. That's GBP 40 off the current price in both instances.
"Xbox 360 is now mass market in Europe," said Chris Lewis, bigwig at Microsoft Entertainment Europe. "We have reached and surpassed several key milestones that form part of our long term strategic plan to achieve critical mass in Europe; and our portfolio now offers the kind of mainstream entertainment experiences that secure wider appeal for Xbox 360.
"History shows that GBP 159.99 is the price point where a console's audience begins to expand, and with these new ERPs in place we're ready to bring more consumers into the Xbox 360 world."
The announcement comes after the German Financial Times reported that the platform holder would reduce the cost of its console throughout our region.

Microsoft has released the Bring Down the Sky downloadable content on Xbox Live.
It costs 400 Points (GBP 3.40 / EUR 4.80) and offers-up an uncharted world to plod around. Or an asteroid station, if you want to be picky.
You see, some four-eyed Batarians (appearing for the first time) have claimed it as their base of operations for an extremist group, and plan to crash it into a nearby colony and kill millions. Unless you stop them. Or help them. Terrorist.
In total there should be around 90 minutes of fresh adventure on offer, as well as a new Achievement totalling 50 Gamerpoints.
It's also worth remembering that those of you too far advanced in the story will not be able to access this: you need full galaxy-exploration freedom to receive the quest and get to the asteroid.
The download is 253.40 MB, and is the first of many future additions to the widely acclaimed science fiction role-playing game.

A Lansing mother was shocked after her two children were subjected to nude pictures on X-Box Live.
Michigan State Police say this disturbing crime should be a wake up call for parents.
Video games are meant to be a haven mostly targeted towards children but just like logging onto the Internet, state police say online games have become a magnet for sexual predators.
Detective Thomas Kish, Computer Crimes Unit: "Mom and dad don't ordinarily think that there's any danger in that and it is a potential danger and something that we all need to be concerned with."
Jennifer says her two sons were the latest victims to an Internet crime.
Thursday night while playing a game on X-Box Live, a video game that allows you to play against people anywhere in the world, they were exposed to nude pictures sent from someone on the other end.
Jennifer, Lansing Resident: "I immediately grabbed the X-Box controller from him, and I went ahead and turned it off. And then I went ahead and called X-Box live, and they told me there was nothing they could do about it. "
Jennifer now fears the safety of her children.
State police say a crime like this is exactly why parents should be aware of online video games.
Detective Thomas Kish: "X-Box Live in particular has video capability so you can see two-way video. It has the ability for text messaging, instant messaging back and fourth. The ability to receive voice messages, so it's as much of a medium as your home computer and parents need to really be aware of that."
And while Microsoft, the maker of X-Box, does give ways to deal with offensive players online, Jennifer says the damage to her children from this incident has already been done.
And she has banned her children from using X-Box Live to protect them from becoming prey to online predators.

Remember that Xbox 360 price cut we mentioned a few days ago? Well it appears that the Financial Times Germany is reporting that this Monday, Microsoft will trim the fat from the Arcade and Pro consoles, shaving €80 and €50 off the price tag, respectively. Of course, right now this is still unconfirmed by the boys in Redmond (or in any other official location), though the buzz in the community does seem to suggest that these cuts are coming. Hopefully if these become a reality, the company will break something off for folks on these shores as well -- we need all the help we can get right now.

Like they say, all's well that ends well -- and that's certainly true in the case of a gamer named Nathaniel. If you'll recall, the Xbox 360 owner had sent his very personalized console into Microsoft for repairs, making very clear that the signed and drawn-on system had great sentimental value to him... which the technicians in Redmond promptly ignored. After the console returned to him wiped clean of the aforementioned "value," it seemed like all hope was lost. Luckily, the kind souls at Bungie have taken it upon themselves to try and right the wrongs perpetrated in this case, and have mailed Nathaniel a super-ultra-mega awesome package, featuring a Legendary Edition helmet signed by most of the Bungie studio staff, the soundtrack disc signed by Martin O'Donnel, a jacket, t-shirt, limited edition wireless controllers, and much, much, much more.

Apparently, Steve Ballmer didn't just take time to respond to the latest iPhone announcements and give that whole Monkey Boy Dance another go during the Mix '08 event. Oh no, he most certainly took the opportunity to address Microsoft's stance on where it was headed now that the format war has concluded. Granted, it's not like it ever had much choice here but to pick up the pieces and support the Blu camp, but for those who put a great deal of stock in confirmation, Mr. Ballmer did say that it had "already been working on, for example, in Windows, device driver support for Blu-ray drives and the like." He also noted that "Toshiba had moved on" and that it too was moving forward, but unfortunately, he didn't make a peep about the recently rumored Xbox 360 BD add-on. Still, we're hoping that one thing will lead to another, if you catch our drift.

Newly released today:
The Rockstar tradition of groundbreaking, original gameplay and humorous tongue-in-cheek storytelling invades an entirely new setting: the schoolyard. As a mischievous schoolboy, you'll stand up to bullies, get picked on by teachers, play pranks, win or lose the girl, and ultimately learn to navigate the obstacles of the worst school around, Bullworth Academy - a corrupt and crumbling prep school with an uptight facade. The story follows Jimmy Hopkins, a teenager who's been expelled from every school he's ever attended.
Left to fend for himself after his mother abandons him at Bullworth to go on her fifth honeymoon, Jimmy has a whole year at Bullworth ahead of him, working his way up the social ladder of this demented institution of supposed learning, standing up for what he thinks is right and taking on the liars, cheats and snobs who are the most popular members of the student body and faculty. If Jimmy can survive the school year and outsmart his rivals, he could rule the school.

TrustedReviews is pretty confidant about their latest "world exclusive" – they say the Xbox 360's 20GB hard drive is going the way of the Core system (read: dying), and in its place we'll have a 60GB Pro system. While the site is sure their info is on the money, they're not sure about when we can expect this new drive (before the end of Microsoft's fiscal year, says their source, which ends June 30).
Will the hard drive-less Arcade console replace the missing 20GB model? They can't be sure, but they do say the boys in Redmond are considering adding another SKU to their increasingly complex product lineup. Something in between the Arcade and the 60GB? Or perhaps something with built-in Blu-ray (if that "makes sense")?

Mohit Anand, Entertainment and Devices manager for Microsoft India, is to leave the company in April.
Anand has been with Microsoft for eight years during which time he has overseen the launch of the Xbox 360 in the region.
Although the respected executive has not yet revealed his new employer or position, he told GameGuru that he intends to stay in India and work in a similar gaming capacity.
"Whatever my next move is going to be, it is going to be within these spaces, which is technology."
"The convergence of technology, retail, entertainment, that's where I have specialised and built these skill sets and that is what I really intend to do," he said.
GameGuru noted that rumours have suggested Anand may be working with Nintendo to establish a presence for the Wii in India, but the exec would not be drawn on any speculation.
"Nintendo first of all hasn't made any announcements on entering the country."
"There are rumours and speculations floating around for that as well but all I will say is that right now I am not going to be making any formal announcements as to where I am headed," he said.

Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer has admitted that the company is working on ways to support Blu-ray, the next-generation DVD format.
Although he did not talk specifically about the format in relation to gaming, he did concede it was time to move on following the collapse of the HD-DVD format earlier this year.
"We've already been working on, for example, in Windows, device driver support for Blu-ray drives and the like, and I think the world moves on," said Ballmer at the Mix08 conference.
"Toshiba has moved on. We've moved on, and we'll support Blu-ray in ways that make sense," he said.
Many are expecting Microsoft to announce a Blu-ray peripheral for the Xbox 360 in the near future, following the demise of the HD-DVD format and Microsoft's decision to end production of a HD-DVD add-on for its console.
According to a Financial Times report yesterday, Microsoft and Sony are currently in talks to offer a Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360.

Designer Tom Heaton has dropped hints that we might see an Xbox Live Arcade iteration of the upcoming Doctor Who Top Trumps game, currently planned for DS and PC.
When questioned about the possibility of the card game being updated with new cards and power-ups via the web, Heaton said, "Sadly, this isn't something that is possible on all of the platforms that we're bringing the game out on.
"However, we are looking at versions for other consoles which could incorporate lots of other goodies - we are big fans of UNO on Xbox Live."
It's far from confirmed but if that isn't a blatant hint then we don't know what is any more. Look for the full interview on CVG over the weekend.

Rockstar has promised a fix for issues with the recently-released Xbox 360 version of Bully: Scholarship Edition.
Complaints appeared on the official Xbox forums as well as on various internet blogs reporting issues with the game freezing up as well as skipping audio and a poor framerate.
Rockstar boss Sam Houser told Kotaku that the issues were never experienced in QA and promised that they would be working around the clock to rectify the situation.
A company spokesperson has now announced a solution.
"We are very aware of the problems some people have been experiencing with the Xbox 360 version of Bully: Scholarship Edition and have been doing everything within our powers to resolve these issues as quickly as possible," a Rockstar Games PR spokesperson told GamesIndustry.biz.
"We will be releasing a title update through Xbox Live within the next week that we are confident will rectify the problem. We apologize wholeheartedly for the inconvenience that this matter has caused some owners of the game. "
