Microsoft XNA general manager Chris Satchell has rejected the suggestion that Xbox Live Arcade has lost the initiative when it comes to supporting independent games.
"I think we still get an amazing amount of interest. Normally we have way more interest than we kind of have publishing slots to put things in," Satchell told Eurogamer, when asked whether PS3 and Wii were starting to steal XBLA's thunder.
"And when you think about the community and what we're doing with distribution on XNA Game Studio, nobody is going to have that combo. I don't think anybody has got that level of innovation integrated the way we have."
Satchell added that he is "really confident" that Microsoft will provide the best platforms for content from the community, indies, and small professional studios, as well as major game releases.
"We've really got the right tools and distribution mechanisms for that range of content, so I feel really confident about all parts of the ecosystem and I'm going to keep working to make sure we support them correctly," he said.
Xbox Live Arcade now has over 100 games on it, but the ranks of PSN exclusives are also filling out and Nintendo's WiiWare service launches next month with games from the likes of David Braben's Frontier Developments.

Activision and Infinity Ward are in high-five overdrive today as both team report the CoD 4 Variety Map Pack has broken an XBL record for the number of paid downloads. Bye, bye Halo.
It's seen over a million downloads in the first nine days of its release; the pack arrived on Xbox Live Marketplace on April 4. We're guessing the previous record was held by either the first Halo 3 or Gears of War map pack.
"Infinity Ward is extremely grateful for support from our loyal Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare community around the world," says Rob 'community chap' Bowling. "From the beginning, we were committed to do our best and that continues now with the Variety Map Pack. We can't wait to get back online with everyone."
The Variety Map Pack includes four new multiplayer maps, and costs 800 Microsoft Points on Live. The same pack releases for PS3 on May 1, and it should be out for PC at some point.
Call of Duty 4 on 360's become the new multiplayer shooter of choice here at CVG Towers. Some of us are even rather good at it.

A post on the Gamerscore blog has revealed Xbox Live will be down for "routine maintenance" on Monday 21st April.
The downtime will begin at 2am PST (10am GMT) and end at 10am PST (6pm GMT).
So does this herald the arrival of the spring update? No, according to Gamerscore: "There will be no immediate or noticeable changes to the interface or services for Xbox Live or the Xbox 360." You never know though, maybe they're testing it out...

Xbox 360 group product manager Aaron Greenberg told Next-Gen in a phone interview Thursday following the release of March's NPD sales figures, "I think the battle for the core user is sort of over, if you will. We're heading now well beyond 20 million in console sales.
"I feel we've secured that core buyer, and that gives us quite a bit of an advantage versus PS3, which is late to the game and still at a price disadvantage relative to the Xbox."
Asked if his verdict is being doled out too soon, as big PlayStation 3 titles such as Metal Gear Solid 4, LittleBigPlanet and Gran Turismo 5 loom on the horizon, he asserted that Xbox 360 has indeed outdone PS3 in the core market.
"I think the type of audience that [Sony is] going after with many of those games, frankly, are Xbox 360 owners...They're trying to go after a consumer that has already bought an Xbox 360, which frankly has a much broader lineup with more titles and more exclusives. You could say that [Sony] showed up with too little, too late."
But even Greenberg will admit that on a global scale, the console war battleground is hotly contested, particularly in Europe, where the PlayStation brand, along with sales for Sony's console, remain strong.
"Without a doubt, Sony is a very formidable competitor in Europe, and they have entrenched themselves as an established brand, and we recognize that," he said. "But it's also part of the reason why we say Europe is the battleground territory for us this generation. So we've really double-downed our efforts there in marketing spend and our aggressiveness in that market."
Greenberg said Microsoft is forecasting Xbox 360's installed base in the US to be two- to three-times that of the PS3 by the end of 2008.
In addition, he said in the US and in EMEA territories, the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto IV has had more pre-orders than the PS3 version by a 2:1 margin. That game launches on April 29.

April 18th, 2008, 16:18 Posted By: wraggster
Monday afternoon, the Little Rock Fire Department responded to a fire that investigators say was caused by a popular video game console.
Millions of people own an Xbox and the newer upgrade the XBox 360, but many may not be aware of the possible fire dangers connected to the machines. Two people in Little Rock heard of the warnings only after their house nearly burned down.
Gamers like Carl Olson take playing video games seriously, some dedicating hours to it. "The average week probably a couple of days worth that's too much," says Olson.
Microsoft game consoles Xbox and its successor Xbox 360 are two of the more popular with millions of units sold world-wide, they're also possibly dangerous. "My XBox 360 has the rings of death, which means something gone wrong you have to send it back for repair. Generally it's over heating inside," explains Olson.
Monday, while no one was home at the Little Rock house on the 5000 block of Cantrell Road, it caught on fire. Flames charred the interior.
Little Rock Fire Department Captain Jason Weaver says investigators traced the source to the power cord of an Xbox 360. "It was melted and it looked like they had it against the wall in on edge and things like that need a little space to dissipate heat," explains Weaver.
This isn’t the first house fire that has been linked to Xbox. In 2005, the family of an Illinois infant who was killed in a fire sued Microsoft, and so did the family of a teen from Texas who was burned.
Also in 2005, Microsoft issued a recall of more than 14 million XBox power cords, citing fire concerns. It seems some gamers didn't get the memo or are just not taking the warning seriously.
"It seems really unlikely. I've been gaming for years and I haven't seen anything like that," guesses Olson.
Microsoft estimates the risk at 1 in 10,000 and recommends owners unplug the XBoxes. Other recommendations are to avoid bending the cords and store the units some place other than the floor to cut down on friction. All to make sure the dangerous action stays on the screen.
The fire Marshall estimates more than $100,000 worth of property damage at the house that caught fire in Little Rock.

The maintenance period scheduled tonight for the Phantasy Star servers has been delayed until April 22. On that date, Sega is expecting to release a client update for the PC/PS2 and XBox 360 versions. Here is a summary of what will be included in the 360 update:
* Meseta amounts will be displayed in different colors.
* The grinder synthesis bug will be fixed. If you want to synth a grinder, you must have at least five open spaces on any stacks you have for that grinder rank. For example, if you want to synth a C grinder, all stacks of C grinders in your character's inventory (C+1 to C+10) must be less than 95.
* All characters on an account will share Guardians Boost Road points.
* There will be a one second delay before you can buy items over 100,000 meseta from a Photon Gacha.
* Story Mode missions will not have any affect on Rare Mission (example: Forest of Illusion) appearances.
* Another Machine Gun glitch will be patched.

Zune Marketplace is no iTunes killer. But maybe Zune VideoX will (at least attempt to) be.
After recently hearing about Microsoft's grand entertainment-marketplace/service (codenamed eLive), now I'm getting word of yet another Microsoft entertainment marketplace, known currently as "Zune Video X" (for Video Experience).
Zune VideoX is not Zune Marketplace revisited, sources say. Instead, it is Microsoft's attempt to apply the lessons learned with the success of the Xbox Live Marketplace to the Zune market, said one source who asked not to be named. It would be a single hub where Zune users could buy and download music, videos, TV shows and more entertainment content.
Microsoft has been talking about building a unified entertainment marketplace for years. One such attempt was codenamed "Alexandria." Another is eLive, is supposedly a single, unified "entertainment marketplace" where consumers will be able to go to buy music, videogames, and other kinds of content that will work on Windows PCs, Xboxes, Zunes and Windows Mobile phones.
One of my sources believes eLive is dead and has been superseded by Zune VideoX.
"eLive was renamed and recrafted to Zune VideoX, and the eLive vision scaled down to focus on Zune," the source, who requested anonymity, said.

Over the last few weeks we compiled your questions for Shane Kim, Corporate Vice President, Microsoft Game Studios, and Kim was nice enough to turn them around in a timely manner.
* Any ideas what I should do with my HD DVD add on besides stare at it with deep regret and a feeling of disgust?
* While it is unfortunate that HD DVD was discontinued, there is still enjoyment to be had from your Xbox 360 HD DVD Player. You can take this as an opportunity to build out your movie collection! There are around 500 HD DVD movies to choose from and many at great deals, so there is a fair amount of content for HD DVD on the market. It also is a terrific DVD player and it allows you to have game discs and movie discs, whether HD DVD or DVD, within the console at one time. The HD DVD player also adds two additional USB ports to your console.
* What will the business model be for XNA games? How much will they cost and how do they forecast this competing with the games currently on XBLA?
* Right now we are really focused on a successful community games beta launch this spring where members of the XNA Creators Club will be able to create and test our community games pipeline. Later this summer we will provide full details on the business models for community games on Xbox LIVE, but I can tell you that we don't expect them to compete with XBLA games.
* What is Microsoft doing to remedy the DRM issues affecting those who have suffered the red ring of death? It's been over two months since I received my new console (unit #3) and I still cannot access content that was purchased with my original 360 while I'm offline. For people who do most of their gaming offline, it is extremely inconvenient. It has also caused me to hold off on future Live purchases for fear of going through this again should I suffer another hardware failure. It makes sense that if you've paid for DLC, you should be able to enjoy it online or off. When are we going to see a resolution?
* I can absolutely understand your frustration. Please know that we have taken major steps to address the hardware issues experienced by our customers so that they won't have to deal with this in the future. For people in your shoes, I think we have an amicable solution already in place. I recommend that you visit this for instructions. This process will only require you to connect to Xbox LIVE once to download the content again. Once you follow this process, you should be able to play previously downloaded content whether you are signed into Xbox LIVE or not. If for some reason this process does not work for you, please contact 1-800-4MY-XBOX.

A new TV advert for the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto IV is now showing on Xbox.com.
It's all part of a big old marketing campaign Microsoft is running, said to be on the same scale as the one they did for Halo 3. The new commercial will start appearing on tellies this weekend and you can expect to see lots of ads in the "lifestyle" press.
Xbox UK boss Steve McGill sounds so excited about the whole thing he might be sick, you know because of the graphics and Live and multiplayer and achievements and downloadable content and everything.
"Microsoft sees GTA IV as a fantastic title to showcase how great Xbox 360 is. What with its amazing graphics and gaming experience, coupled with playing with your friends on Xbox Live, achievements and of course the exclusive extra episodic content for GTA IV that will be downloadable this autumn and will only be available on Xbox 360," he said.
"As such you can expect a large awareness campaign from us, showcasing how great GTA IV on Xbox 360 is, and what great value the Xbox 360 console is too."
McGill went on, "Reviews of the game are now coming in and it’s getting a fantastic response, and the press are highlighting how massive the Xbox 360 exclusive downloadable content will be and how easy and great it is to play multiplayer with friends over Xbox Live.
"We’re naturally very excited about GTA IV coming to Xbox 360, we know pre-orders are going fabulously well and we know consumers are extremely excited about all the great things the Xbox 360 version offers." Possibly not as excited as you, sir.
Grand Theft Auto IV is out on Xbox 360 on April 29th. And on PlayStation 3, though McGill didn't mention that.

There's still no release date for Unreal Tournament 3 on Xbox 360, but there are some details now on what makes the 360's iteration different from PC and PS3. IGN reports that the Xbox 360 version of UT3 will have five new "exclusive" maps, two new characters and includes two-player splitscreen. It will also contain the free maps available as DLC for the PS3 and PC versions of the game.
Jeff Morris, senior producer at Epic, tells the site he believes UT3 will be a reprieve for those with "tactical shooter fatigue." He stands by the game being an "unabashedly twitch" title. We're expecting more details (maybe even a release date) on the Xbox 360 version of UT3 sometime tomorrow.

We find it incredibly hard to believe Atari will ONLY release an Alone in the Dark demo for Xbox 360 but that, officially, is all the firm's saying at the moment.
"No demos have been confirmed for other platforms", an Atari rep told us this morning.
We reported earlier this week that the Xbox 360 Alone in the Dark demo will release around the game's launch time, June 20.
But beyond that, well, the publisher's keeping its lips well and truly sealed.
Alone in the Dark on Xbox 360 is joined by PC, Wii and PS2 versions on June 20. A PS3 version is due later in the year.

The current top rated Ikaruga Xbox Live Arcade player has directed a white and black laser beam of hate at the Treasure remake, calling the Arcade version "a horrible port".
The Japanese player, Gamertag Kingoro58k, put up with the port long enough to get to the number one slot, but writes on his Gamertag bio (in Japanese): "The XBLA version of Ikaruga is a horrible port. This isn't Ikaruga, this is Ikaruga LOL."
Apparently, the reason for the Ikaruga XBLA hate (according to the internet) is a number of subtle changes in the Arcade version that have pissed off the hardcore shooter players.
These are changes like different enemy placement from the Dreamcast version, and one of the boss's lasers sping round the opposite way. You can't please everyone.
Read our review of Ikargua, where we say good things about the Treasure shooter, here.

Sales of the Xbox 360 in Europe have "more than doubled" since the company announced a price cut in mid March, according to Microsoft.
According to the company, the Xbox 360 has an attach rate of seven games to each console after 27 months on the market, compared to 3.8 units per PS3 and 3.5 games for every Wii.
"Xbox 360 is truly the next-generation console of choice among consumers, and today’s numbers are proof that we are delivering on our commitment to achieve critical mass in Europe," said Chris Lewis, vice president of Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Business in Europe.
"The highly competitive ERP, coupled with entertainment content that's appealing to everyone in the home, makes Xbox 360 the ultimate high-definition entertainment choice, and it’s clear that we’re already seeing this resonate with consumers."
Microsoft has not announced any specific sales numbers following the price cut.
In March the company dropped the price of the Core Xbox 360 to GBP 159.99, the Premium to 199.99 and the Elite to GBP 259.99.

With the release of the highly anticipated Soul Calibur IV now confirmed to be July 29, and another fourth iteration fighting game likely hitting near the end of the year or thereabouts, what could fuel the single combat genre until the fall? Well, if you're going to be picking up SCIV it might be worth your time to see how the series started off, and Namco Bandai looks to be making that even easier when they bring the original Soulcalibur to Live Arcade later this year. Regarded by some as a near-perfect weapon based fighter, this 1999 Dreamcast title will be upgraded to run in HD, though that's where the upgrades really stop. Leaderboards will be featured for the single player, but there are currently no plans to include online multiplayer, local only. We're not sure about this particular port, our purchase will likely depend on the amount of ambient nostalgia upon release (and of course upon the quality of Soul Calibur IV).

April 17th, 2008, 03:45 Posted By: Shadowblind
April 16, 2008 - In the brief history of the Xbox brand, the Microsoft manufactured consoles have not exactly been the place for Japanese RPGs. That has begun to change, but the introduction of a long running and adored franchise to the audience is still not a thing to be done without care. This is a whole new audience, but Namco Bandai feels confident that this entrant into the Tales series offers something to make new players take a look and packs more content than ever before to entice the old fans into the ride.
Tales of Vesperia takes place in a world controlled by a single empire. This is usually not a good thing and such is the case here. The main character, Yuri, comes from a poor district and is fighting to make changes and protect his brethren. He first tried becoming an imperial knight to work from within the system but now believes that doing what is best matters most, even if it brings you outside of the law. His childhood friend, Flynn, has a different sense of justice and is continuing to work with the imperial knights. From there, the adventure begins.
The demo we played took place roughly three or four hours into the game and, like many brief sessions with RPGs, raised more questions than it answered and offered little context. For instance, what is the deal with the pipe-smoking dog? Don't worry, we asked and found out. He's Yuri's companion and pretty darn good in a fight. The pipe is a memento from his old master. Now that we've got that out of the way, we can continue.
The 10-15 minute session was fairly standard in design. It began with a brief story sequence before moving off into the woods for some exploration and combat. There isn't much room to maneuver down the thin forest trails, though there were several side paths to poke around in and chests to find. It culminated in a boss battle that beat us into submission. It may look like a friendly game for children, but don't let that lower your guard.
Tsutomu Gouda, producer for the Tales series, consoled us after our defeat. "Thinking about the user base for the 360…we're thinking that a little bit harder challenge would be best for this game; harder than anything in the past in the series." He went on to explain that the difficulty should be just right for people who are familiar with the Tales battle mechanics and strategy, but will offer a good challenge for those who are new to the series. The goal is to create a sense of danger around boss battles that will force players to plan ahead and think things through.
Combat is all real-time in Tales of Vesperia and takes place in a battle arena separate from the overworld (the load time is near instantaneous between the two). You can pause the game to assign new Artes (special moves and spells) or use items, but the bulk of the action will go fast quite fast. When playing alone, the other members of your party act independently but can be assigned to ask permission before using items of worth. The game is more fun, though, when up to three others hop in at any time to take control of the other party members. The first player still controls the party outside of battle, but once the fight begins each team member calls their own shots. Due to this limited co-op structure, the team felt online co-op wouldn't be all that fun and decided to leave it out.
The Tales of Vesperia team is looking to make the visual style set itself apart from the majority of games that strive for a photorealistic look. "We think we've got really good in-game graphics that are nearly indistinguishable from the anime that Production I.G. is making for the game," said Gouda. And it does look quite good. Xbox 360 owners will notice that the art style is similar to Eternal Sonata, but purposefully leans towards a more hand-drawn look. The portions of the game that are anime shouldn't disappoint either. It's all being captured in HD for the best possible presentation.
All of the major story sections have voicework to go along with the text, but not every situation will have spoken word. It's also all in English for the US release with no option for Japanese dialogue. In terms of the soundtrack, Namco Bandai revealed that Bonnie Pink, a Japanese singer/songwriter, has composed and performed the theme song in both Japanese and English. The tune is called "Ring a Bell" and it was inspired by the characters and story from the game. The background music in the game is once again being done by Motoi Sakuraba, the composer for Symphonia and Abyss.
Namco Bandai plans to have Tales of Vesperia release as close to simultaneous as possible in Japan and the US in 2008. That's quite a big goal considering Tales of Vesperia is reportedly a bit longer than Tales of the Abyss, the previous biggest game in the series.
This is bittersweet. I'm happy that its coming to 360, but pi**ed that I know everyone is gonna ignore it. I desperately want this to do well, or Namco Bandai may stop sending Tales games to the US altogether... Its reportedly coming out in the US June 24.

Master Chief has popped the Legendary Map Pack for Halo 3 on Xbox Live.
For 800 Points (GBP 6.80 / EUR 9.60) you get new Forge options and three painstakingly created multiplayer maps: Avalanche, Blackout and Ghost Town. Not one not two but three things in it.
Avalanche is a snow-coated affair inspired by the Sidewinder level from Halo: Combat Evolved; Blackout is a re-visualised version of Lockout from Halo 2; and Ghost Town is a completely fresh experience in a Jungle dominated by a building with enough nooks and crannies to be described as a giant block of Swiss cheese.
On top of this, Master Chief is offering early purchasers a free four-month subscription to the Bungie PRO file storage system. This expands your space to 250 MB so you can share all of your screenshots, videos and game types with your friends.
Matchmaking playlists should be updated to include the fresh maps, so you can get plenty of practice in before the Legendary Weekend that runs from 25th to 27th April.

Grand Theft Auto IV is set to rack up USD 400 million in its first week and sell 6 million copies, according to a Variety report.
The article quotes "sources close to publisher Take-Two" as having supplied those predictions. "Though they rarely release the data, videogame publishers are able to accurately predict early game sales based on what retailers order," apparently.
Halo 3 previously enjoyed the biggest launch of any videogame in history, with USD 300 million made in its first week on sale and 5 million units shifted. But as Variety points out, that was an Xbox 360 exclusive - while GTA IV is coming out on PS3 too. On April 29th, in case you'd forgotten.
If Rockstar's latest effort does break the USD 400 million barrier, it could go on to beat the biggest grossing film of all time - Pirates of the Caribbean, which made USD 404 million at the box office.
In case you were wondering, 21.5 million copies of previous instalment Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas have now been sold.
