After being endlessly rumored and then sort-of-confirmed, we were pretty sure the currently-in-limbo XBLA version of Goldeneye 007 would remain in hiding for quite a while (questionable videos notwithstanding). Apparently not, as British mag Xbox World 360 announced via its blog today that next Wednesday's issue will include the world's first hands-on impressions of the port.
The short announcement, which was slowly leaked via a screenshot jigsaw puzzle throughout the week, promises "never-seen shots and hands-on details" about the game's differences, improvements, and information on how we can "make sure this incredible remake does see the light of day." That last bit is a little worrying to us, as it implies there's still a chance the game won't see the light of day. What can we do to help? Circulate a petition? Protest at Rare headquarters? Sacrifice our pets to Satan? FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY TELL US!

Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling gets it. He knows that even though similar levels in a game like Call of Duty 4 are an important part of creating a coherent world, people want something different in a pack of downloadable content. And that's exactly what they'll be getting, with an upcoming pack of three maps. But as to what, exactly, that means, Bowling still isn't saying.
What he will say is that those who've been clamoring for new content may already have a good idea of what's on the way. "It's a lot of community feedback, they want bigger maps, more buildings, more close quarters fighting. It's going to be really evident that it's stuff that they asked for," Bowling said. "People in the community should have a good idea of what to expect."
The maps are now in the playtesting phase, so hopefully even us non-forum goers will know what Infinity Ward has cooking soon.

The official site just reported that the title update for the Xbox 360 servers has been approved by Microsoft, so most of the content from the past few updates will be hitting the servers this Friday! Unfortunately, Forest of Illusion will not be included with this update. An official reason why has not been given yet.
According to chillaura at the official PSU forum, the content from this update which has not made it to the PC/PS2 servers (PM devices, Nanotranser X, etc.) should be added with this Friday's maintenance. We'll have more information as it surfaces.
Update! Despite SonicTeam not listing Forest of Illusion in their schedule, the mission has indeed hit the 360 servers! Happy hunting, Guardians!

In the midst of all of the confusion of what was and was not supposed to be updated in yesterday's maintenance, the GUARDIANS Boost Road worked its way in to the game. The PC/PS2 version of the event seems to be working fine, however the 360 version has been reported as bugged, displaying inaccurate bonuses during missions, for example. Unfortunately, this means that the 360's GBR has been rescheduled to officially begin on February 15th. Though GBR will not be removed from the game in its current state, once the new start date rolls around, any accumulated point totals will be reset. This has no effect on the PC/PS2 version of the event.

Just got back from Microsoft's Blogger Breakfast and it was a hoot! The smoked bacon was delicious! Several bloggers got to throw questions at Chris Satchell, Aaron Greenberg and John Schappert.
XNA Community Program
* Games are all unrated. No ESRB intervention
* There may be a possible file size increase in the future to accommodate game developers.
* Games probably won't be restricted by region.
* Game creators will retain all rights to their games.
* There will be no certification for XNA community developed games.
* No achievements for XNA community games
* Friends lists probably won't work on XNA community games. They are still working on it.
Xbox Live Downtime Over The Holidays
* Xbox Live outage due to overwhelming holiday response
* 1,000,000 concurrent users on before Super Bowl playing Madden
* 4,000,000 new Live Gold subscribers in 6 months
Xbox 360 Blu-Ray Player Possibilities
* Microsoft doesn't care about Blu-Ray at this time
* 3% attach rate for HD-DVD add-on
Red Ring Of Death Still An Issue?
* Failure rate has officially dropped
* Microsoft is working on the DRM issue with downloaded content
* DRM issue only affects those who don't have access to Live
* In the interim, Microsoft will refund ALL your MS Points to re-download your content

Due to overwhelming response, we've decided to extend the time window where people can download the XNA Creators Club Game Launcher and play the games during the trial of Xbox LIVE Community Games. The games themselves still expire on March 9th, but this gives a little more time for people to get the launcher so that you can download and play the games.
It's almost like we dropped more quarters into the machine Stick out

Frank and I are having a good time at the Game Developers Conference, but when I began to write some gaming news and felt the knife at my throat, I knew I couldn't escape my shadow. The mole. He followed me to give me news.
"I have word on the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive," he told me. I swallowed. I didn't want to move. "On February 21, the price is going to drop to $49.99."

The Xbox Live Arcade version of 2D remake Bionic Commando: Rearmed (not to be confused with the full-on 3D remake) will feature lower-res textures than the PSN and PC versions, because of XBLA's strict 150MB size limit.
Capcom producer Ben Judd revealed the differences in an interview with 1UP, telling the site than both the PC and PlayStation Network version will have higher-res textures than the Xbox 360.
"That's surprising to hear," Microsoft's Xbox corporate VP John Schappert said of the news. "Last I checked it was Capcom that had an exception to our file size with Street Fighter II [Hyper Fighting].... We raised our limit to 150 megs, which seems pretty darn great.
"I don't think it has limited our games in any way. Look at Rez HD. Look at Poker Smash. Look at Undertow. These are very, very, very good games."
But - busting out the damage control - Schappert argues the texture problem can't all be down to size. "There are 800 different factors [besides memory issues] that factor into development," he says. "There's also prowess of programmers. It's never cut and dry.
"If we need to help them program their stuff, we have people on Chris Satchell's team that fly around and help our dev teams out when they need it.... I'm kind of new, but [Capcom] knows someone's number at Xbox Live. I'm certainly willing to help them out."
Yes Rez HD looks great but come on Microsoft; it's the 21st century. 150MB isn't much on our super-fast broadband...

The 360's been out since 2005. Plenty of time to sell plenty of consoles. But just how many have Microsoft actually sold? John Schappert's got the answer: 18 million. And that's worldwide. Well...North America and Britain, mostly. Most other places, including Japan and, more importantly, Sony's European heartland, couldn't give a rat's arse. Which is something Microsoft are both aware of and are trying to turn around:
We look, and we are hitting the ball out of the park in North America, and I think that there's regions of Europe where we're not doing as well as we'd like to do, and we have room for improvement. Those are renewed areas and key areas of focus for us.
Might want to focus a little harder. If the single biggest gaming market in the world isn't digging your product on the scale Europe ain't digging it, you got problems!

I searched the forums but couldn't find any news on them, so I'll just post both of them here. These announcements are for Tales of Vesperia and Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World.
Tales of Vesperia has been anounced for 360
February 21, 2008 - You wouldn't usually expect a new Tales game to debut in a magazine outside of Japan, but that's apparently what has happened with Bandai Namco's Tales of Vesperia. Following the game's announcement at December's Jump Festa event in Tokyo, a magazine outside of Japan was the first to get the full word on the game, along with confirmation of Xbox 360 as the platform.
This development attracted the attention of (and possibly confused) the editors over at Famitsu and Famitsu.com, the usual sources for Japanese game scoops, so they got on the line with Bandai Namco's PR department for re-confirmation.
Famitsu.com posted its conversation with the Bandai Namco PR department in the form of a short Q&A.
Asked if it's true that the game will be released on the Xbox 360, the PR department responded, "Yes, we have decided to release TOV overseas on the Xbox 360."
Asked if the game will be released only on the 360, "We've decided to release TOV on the Xbox 360, but regarding other platforms, we're looking at all possibilities."
Finally, asked if the game will come to the Xbox 360 even in Japan, "Regarding Japan, everything is currently TBA. We expect to be able to make an announcement shortly."

I have been waiting for something like this to happen since I first Played Tales of the World. Looking back, almost ALL Tales games have been released in Japan a year before getting overseas, an I'm more then happy about this news. Wh00t! Don't worry though PS3 owners, I think some Tales love may be headed your way too.
Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World has been announced for North America
I can't provide you with an article, so you'll just have to take my word for it...OR--
You can just go to your local store and pick up a Nintendo Power magazine for Feb. It has Tales of Symphonia plastered all over the front and a ten page in-depth article about it.
Wh00t! I was afraid this may never make overseas! I haven't heard much on a European release though....

Bungie's latest Halo 3 update is now live and you'll be prompted to download the, err, download, next time you fire the shooter up.
"You may experience a few laggier-than-usual games after the update is installed as it resets your hosting and network connection history. This history should grow rapidly for an improved situation," says Bungie.
Other minor tweaks include:- Melee contests have been rebalanced
- Dying while performing a melee or weapon lunge will no longer accelerate the dead player
- The Elite Commando shoulder armor variant has been unlocked for all players
- Improved the "Prefer Good Connection" option
- Added backend hopper support for DLC custom game variants
- Fixed a problem with the Theater when a player tried to view a saved film for a DLC map he or she doesn't own
- Fixed a UI error in the Theater when a party leader selects a film that is invalid for a party client
- Fixed a bug that under rare conditions could allow a BXB sequence
- Fixed a Dirty Disc Error that could occur when loading the same DLC map twice in a row
- Added a visible version string to the Halo 3 main menu
Long explanations of what all that actually means can be found here.

So that's why we could only get a rank of around 30 in Halo 2. We were playing it properly and not cheating. Stupid us...
Halo's multiplayer component is arguably the biggest draw for the shooter and if it was riddled with cheats and people fixing games, we think it's fair to say it would be half the success it is today.
It's bad enough having to listen to losers begging for help in getting some of the game online achievements but people cheating is something else altogether. If you're going to cheat at least make sure it's at something worth while, like exams. Why anyone would want to cheat at something that isn't real is beyond us.
Halo 3 has tripled Halo 2's number of live players. 5.9 million people have played the game on Xbox Live; 88 percent attempted matchmaking, says a report on Next-Gen. There are 1.2 million people playing Halo 3 each week.
Bungie engineer Chris Butcher says its appeal is the matchmaking. "The idea [behind] matchmaking is never give users a reason to quit. You never want the game to tell them to stop playing." Halo 2 suffered from experience boosting. Players would rig matches in order to gain or retain a certain skill level. "Everybody at level 50 or above was a cheater in Halo 2."
To change this, Halo 3 separated player reward from skill rating, says the report. Even if a player rigs matches to increase their ranking, since you're only rewarded for wins, they'll still be matched based on their actual skill.
Bungie has released a new patch for Halo 3 today. Read about less lag and better melee attacks here.

In the most un-surprising news event of the year, Microsoft has announced the sequel to Gears of War during its GDC keynote in San Francisco.
The real surprise is that it's coming this November as an Xbox 360 exclusive, far earlier than anyone expected.
Update: You can see the Gear 2 teaser trailer on Marketplace RIGHT NOW. It's called Duel and can be found under the 'Game Videos' tab. It doesn't show anything at all though. There are also two new themes on there too.
The news was first leaked from Microsoft Italy and was then confirmed by Epic's Cliffy B during Microsoft VP John Schappert's keynote address in San Francisco. The Gears man dramatically burst onto the stage wielding a chainsaw-ing Lancer.
There's not much info on the second game yet, except that it "continues the story of Marcus Fenix and Delta Squad in an epic saga of survival, loss and retribution." But what did you expect?
Epic president Mike Capps also took to the stage to show off some stunning improvements in the Unreal Engine, including an upgraded version of Gears sporting improved fluid dynamics, soft-body physics and over a hundred enemies on screen. Now there's a plague of locusts we can't wait to see.

What was just a rumor as recently as this morning has apparently already become reality -- the Canadian Toys R Us web site is showing $50 reductions in price for the Xbox 360 Pro (now $349.99) and Halo Edition - (now $399.99). An informant at a Canadian Toys R Us has also told us that the Xbox 360 Arcade has been reduced $20 (to $279.99) and the Elite has come down $50 (to $449.99 -- all prices are in Canadian dollars, eh?)
Ironically enough, FutureShop, where this morning's rumor first originated, has not lowered their web site prices as of press time. Perhaps they're waiting until Friday to unleash that Turok Elite bundle on an unsuspecting public?
Does this surprise move mean an American price drop is in the cards? Probably not -- much like the previous Microsoft Canada price drop, the adjustment seems designed to bring prices up North in line with the weakening American dollar.

It wasn't all Zune gaming at Microsoft's GDC keynote this morning -- a lot of time was spent discussing Community Games, the new official name for XNA-based games. Amateur devs will get "creator identities" along with their gamertags, and Live members can rate, grade, and discuss your efforts. Of course, as we've heard, games can move from the 360 to PCs to second-gen Zunes, which is definitely pretty cool, but it'll be interesting to see what that means for devs who want to try and take advantage of the 360's horsepower -- will they be restrict their code to a specific platform? While we wait for those answers, it looks like we'll be able to get a taste of what Community Games have to offer right away -- Microsoft announced that the first seven XNA-based games are available immediately, with an open beta to begin in spring and full-on launch by the end of the year. List of games after the jump -- but what are you doing reading this when you could be playing?
Update: We just tried downloading RocketBall and the process is totally different than you'd expect. First you have to download the XNA Launcher, which is under New Arrivals in the Marketplace blade -- but you don't need a membership, so skip that, and the XNA ad that displays points you to the wrong thing, so ignore that as well. Then head over to the Games blade and select Games Library, but don't open the Launcher, cause it'll just kick you out. Instead, press Y to view the list of games and download one. So far the "YouTube of games" seems a bit convoluted -- hopefully the next Dashboard update makes this all a bit simpler.
"JellyCar." Created by Walaber from the United States, this game is about driving a squishy car through squishy worlds, trying to reach the exit.
"Little Gamers." This is a 2-D high definition action side-scroller based on the famous Web comic "Little Gamers" created by Loic Dansart, a 24-year-old software developer from Belgium.
"The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai." An intense 2-D action platform game created by James Silva from the United States, "The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai" has a unique, highly stylized look and fast and fluid action.
"TriLinea." This puzzle game created by Edison S. Prata Jr., Renato Pelizzari da Silva and Davi da Silva Prata from Brazil mixes fast-paced action with strategy.
"RocketBall." Created by Tyler Wanlass, Patrick Murty and Todd Barrons of the United States, this neighborhood game of dodgeball explodes onto the street with fast-paced multiplayer action.
"ProximityHD." This game, created by Brian Cable from the United States, takes the essence of strategy games -- battles for control of territory and armies -- and distills it down to a simple, easy-to-understand set of rules for casual players.
"Culture." Created by independent game development company Hidden Path Entertainment from the United States, "Culture" contains challenging games and puzzles based on beautiful flowers.

We got a chance to check out the first functioning games for Zune and were able to answer a few -- but not many -- questions about how this thing's bound to play out.
For starters, first-gen Zunes don't appear to be ruled out by any means, but it's going to be dependent on the game controls. Zauri, the sample space shooter game demoed today, uses the Zunepad, thus wouldn't work (as well) on a Zune 30. Nothing has been decided as to whether games will universally require 2nd-gen Zunes, though.
Use of the Zunepad in Zauri was as a trackpad and omnidirectional -- it wasn't just up / down / left / right, as in the menus.
Right now the system partitions a mere 16MB for storing games, although this might change.
Right now there isn't a professional-grade SDK to announce; all titles should initially be done up in XNA Studio.
Means of distribution (i.e. games loaded through an installer, through the Zune desktop app, or through Zune Marketplace?) has not yet been decided.
The first beta development tools will be out this Spring.
There are no plans for Zune game sharing (yet), so to play with a friend wirelessly you both must have the game on your Zune.
There was plenty more we wanted to know but Microsoft definitely stressed that this is an incredibly early announcement, and many of the details we're all lusting after are still being hammered out. Again, we'll know more in Spring and Summer.

In an attempt to clear their shelves of dead HD DVD weight, retailers are taking the obvious step of slashing prices. Others, like play.com are renaming the players. Thanks to the magic of Google cache, we see that Toshiba's "HD-EP30 HD DVD Player" (as it was known on February 15th) is now listed as the "HD-EP30 HDMI Upscaling Player with HD DVD High Definition Playback." Caveat emptor, as they say.
