Is it too early to say that we're beginning to see a pattern develop here? We know that a mere handful of reviews for Rockstar's latest opus have been published, but should the current trend continue, Grand Theft Auto IV could be the subject of more perfect scores than 1976 Olympic gymnast Nadia Comaneci. Yes, IGN recently dropped the suspiciously non-embargoed first online review for the title, giving it a 10 out of 10 (on both platforms) and evoking the wrath of the Nintendo Defense Force, calling GTA IV "the best game since Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time."
The seven-page, five-thousand word review (and accompanying video review, after the jump) praises the game's art style, the immersive backdrop of Liberty City, the "Oscar quality" story and the "refined" gameplay. The enamored reviewer even commends some of the quirky extra features included by Rockstar, such as Niko's multipuropse cellphone, or the in-game use of alcohol: "You don't have to drive drunk," the reviewer exclaims, "but it's fun to give it a try." Great, now we can look forward to public backlash towards the game's DUI-endorsing write-ups, as well.

Word from Paramount today is that Star Trek Season 2’s remastered DVD release is not cancelled as previously stated by many. Unlike its predecessor it is missing one vital component, the HD DVD portion! This saddens me, the HD DVD master was not only crisp and beautiful but it was also very interactive and neat.
I am a huge fan of the original, so regardless I will buy Season 2 when it is released in August. The good news is the film was still remastered and will feature a Dolby Digital soundtrack, plus those that bought the first season won’t be disappointed since the case is still designed the same way as the original was so it won’t stand out too much in your collection. Also consider this, if you have a good upscaller you will be missing very little. I believe it will still keep its 4:3 aspect ratio, so the picture won’t look stretched (The HD DVD side was also 4:3).
As for the “true” HD content, I believe it will eventually end up on the Xbox Live Video Marketplace (Season 1 has), and maybe even have some TV runs like Season 1 did remastered.
Your thoughts?

Not unlike the early colorized versions of the original Zune before it, the red Zune 80 looks like it should finally be ready to make its un-tattooed retail sales debut . If you've been considering getting loud and/or proud with your next Zune, call ahead to your local gadget stock keeper and see if they're in.

If Microsoft has one thing going for them that no fanboy rant can question, it's Xbox LIVE. As long as Nintendo has friend codes and Sony has, uhhh, we'll get back to that, Microsoft stands tall on their untarnished pedestal. Well...untarnished if you ignore the month+ of outages around Christmas 2007. The fact of the matter is, Xbox LIVE has failed the consumer public before. And it could fail us again.
Jump ahead to next week, we have GTA IV—a game that's so big that—we'll let Microsoft's General Manager of LIVE Services Operations, Derek Ingalls explain that metric:
"...we are preparing for a spike that could be much larger than what we saw with the launches of Halo 3 and Activision's "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare."
So how is Microsoft prepping Xbox LIVE for the not so metaphorical mass rioting that is GTA IV multiplayer?
"Last holiday we weren't properly prepared," Ingalls admits. "So we are going the extra mile with Grand Theft Auto IV..." Yeah, that was total marketing speak. But it got your ears perked, didn't it?
"The biggest step we've taken is to add in more server hardware, which will expand the service's capacity," Ingalls explains to us through email. (PR had explained earlier that he was "obviously very busy" this week.) "We have actually doubled our capacity for concurrent users over the last 2 months."
The backbone of Xbox LIVE is an interesting point in itself. It's not one big pile of computers, but two big piles of computers. The LIVE-exclusive servers are in Seattle, while LIVE piggybacks off other Microsoft servers in Quincy, Washington. Ingalls jokes that security includes "tubes you must step into with bio-metric devices such that you must lay your hand on a reader for fingerprint identification before it will allow you out of the ejection tube."
And, of course, no shorts are allowed. (We're guessing it's the copious amounts of programmer leg hair, but consider that point unconfirmed.)
However, the server upgrades at Microsoft's datacenters are just part of their preparation. They have extra staff working longer hours this week. And those updates you've been receiving on LIVE?
"... are part of an ongoing effort to get ahead on capacity issues," Ingalls explained. "We learned a lot from last holiday and have a comprehensive plan we are executing upon throughout the year to prevent any recurrence of issues like we experienced. That said, we would be remiss to not expect and respect that the "Grand Theft Auto IV" release is anticipated to impact usage in a positive way."
Yeah, those updates are totally about Grand Theft Auto IV—this week at least. Because a free copy of Undertow won't quell a few million teenagers looking to break some faces, steal some shit and drive around with their music really, really loud.
As for what Sony is doing to prepare—their fate lies in the hands of Rockstar (who rumor has it is actually using Gamespy's servers). Because they don't offer a backend to host games like Xbox LIVE, they avoid the headache for a trade-off of a little risk, and almost no say in fixing potential problems that may arise.
Even Ingalls, knowing everything they've done to prepare, is a bit nervous.
"We know the launch of GTA IV will be a wildly successful day for Rockstar, for LIVE, and for our customers... and hopefully, just another day for operations."

The ESRB and National Institute on Media and the Family would like to remind (naïve) parents that Grand Theft Auto IV is not appropriate for children. In a joint statement by the two organizations, the groups point out GTA IV has been rated Mature for: Intense Violence, Blood, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Partial Nudity and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. What 12-year-old wouldn't beg to play that? It sounds awesome!
The two organizations "encourage parents to be informed and exercise their discretion when considering the purchase of all M-rated games." The ESRB reminds that the average age of a gamer is now over 30 and that some titles are "clearly not intended" for kids. And GTA IV is clearly one of those games

When Red Storm creative director Christian Allen (of Ghost Recon fame) joined Bungie last year, we speculated that he'd be working on a Halo-themed squad game. Lending further credence to our mutagenically induced prescience, EGM's Quartermann rumor column reports that Bungie's first game post-Microsoft will be a third-person Halo prequel "chronicling early skirmishes between the ODST troops and the Covenant" (read: no Master Chief). They're not sure if this is the same as Peter Jackson's mysterious Halo project, though it would appear that they're hiring a team specifically for that. EGM says that Microsoft will be ready to reveal all once the hype-train for Gears of War 2 has come to a halt.

Yasushiro Nishimura has said that the new Dragon Ball Z game is not really a fighting game. This puzzled the guys over at 1UP.com, so they decided to get a hands-on review. After they sat down and started playing the game they realized it was not really about fighting; it was about smashing and Kamehameha-ing the life out of your opponent without blocking a single hit. According to the article, the game is more like it's anime show: strong hits, big explosions, and literally knocking your opponent in one side of a mountain and out the other.

The first lot of Western Lost Odyssey download content has turned up on Xbox Live Marketplace - but it's not much worth getting excited about.
The 'Triple Bonus Pack' gives you three new items for 200 Microsoft Points (£1.70); the "Memory Lamp", which lets you watch past event scenes all over again, "Shattered Bond," an antique that brings back "the memory of a forgotten dream" and a special ring called the "Killer Machine."
We've no idea what the last one does, but unless it adds two new dungeons and a bigger sword, we're feeling a bit let down.
Japan meanwhile, has just received one new dungeon, a single rare item and an extra boss encounter for 400 Microsoft points. When do we get that one, Microsoft?

One of the surprise stars of EA's London showcase event this afternoon is Valve's Zombie shooter Left 4 Dead, which is looking like an absolute blast on PC and 360.
This preview will tell you more, but Valve's multiplayer shooter basically pits you and three mates against the undead hordes - though it's not quite as simple as it sounds.
Our man on the floor won't shut up about how awesome the Counterstrike-meets-28 Day later shooter is to play, so we're starting to think we should all be looking out for Left 4 Dead.
A sure contender for Zombie game of the year? Find out at the end of this year.

Microsoft has revealed that global sales of Xbox 360 have trundled past 19 million units mark.
Its momentum has grown steadily since the start of the year; Microsoft reported over 17 million sales in January and 18 million in February.
The figures come off the back of a successful third-quarter for Microsoft, which saw revenue from the Entertainment division perk up by 68 per cent.
The platform holder attributed this to demand for Xbox 360 consoles, and pointed to removing component shortages and delays in product delivery as a goal for the future.
Despite strong Entertainment sales, its Windows software dipped 24 per cent and earnings from online advertising came in at the low end of projections.
Observers also note that the Microsoft offer to buy Yahoo for USD 44.6 billion has had a negative affect on share prices.
Yesterday Nintendo revealed that its Wii console has now sold nearly 25 million units around the world.

April 25th, 2008, 00:14 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices division saw revenue up 68 percent in its third fiscal quarter, thanks to "robust" demand for Xbox 360 consoles, the company announced today. The console sold 19 million units during the three months ending March 31st, a 74 percent increase over the same period a year ago.
Microsoft's Xbox 360 division was the $1.56 billion revenue standout amid a period of very little growth in the company's other businesses - Microsoft's whole-picture revenue was $14.45 billion, barely nudging the needle above the $14.4 billion it reported during the same period of 2007. Microsoft's overall profit actually slumped 11 percent.
The $14.45 billion performance for the company was less than analysts were expecting from Microsoft, but the company still promises to make expectations for its upcoming fiscal fourth quarter ranging from $15.5 billion to $15.8 billion.

Microsoft has admitted that it's staffing up for its Halo collaboration with Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson.
Internet detectives over at MTV unearthed job postings recently on Microsoft's website that mentioned working with "an external luminary" in relation to "a new experience in the Halo universe".
It turns out that even Microsoft couldn't brush that one off as rumour and speculation, so the company clarified matters thus:
"Since [the original X06 announcement], Microsoft Game Studios has been hard at work collaborating with Peter Jackson and Bungie on the development of that project.
"At this time, it's necessary to grow the internal team to keep pace with development. Bungie will continue to remain involved in multiple aspects of the Halo Universe with MGS."
There's still no real word on what the Jackson Halo game is, apart from mutterings in early 2007 about episodic content.

Ninja Gaiden II has been officially dated for June 6 in Europe.
The date has been rumoured for a couple of weeks, but this official confirmation means we'll definitely be cutting hooded blokes' arms off in time for this summer's lads holiday.
There's also word of a demo on the horizon, which will supposedly be hitting the Xbox Live servers next month. We'll keep you posted on that one.
